I see the face of modernity changing in Milwaukee as I look walk through life in the city. The scene of my daily commute has changed greatly in the past decade and a half. It is difficult to remember, but at one point modern looking architecture could be described as red bricks and white stone accents. It is my opinion that the most recent iteration of the ever changing popular style in architecture is flat, colorful, geometric facades mixed with glass and steel. A great example of this has the word “modern” in its name. The Moderne apartment building in downtown milwaukee partly fits this description while also featuring a popular new flat font for writing on buildings. Seeing “Seven Seventy Two” written out in this font in shimmery, metallic letters has in a short time become quite common. Contour apartments on Prospect avenue incorporates all of the above alongside the pleasing gimmick of a slightly curved wall along its most outward facing side. The aggregate scene is very different in the third ward, where modernity is achieved through preserving the aesthetic of existing structures and merely adding small new nuances like large glass entryways. This scene is completed by posh rooftop bars and restaurants, occasional artwork, and hanging incandescent bulbs. At Eleven25 at Pabst, an old brewery building has been converted into a modern apartment building where the charm comes from exposed rafters, I beams, and original brick walls contributing to an old but new feel. Gray paint and white baseboards finish out the look. High ceilings, wooden floors and granite countertops give a sense of luxury even in units with square footage that is not plentiful. This building also features a sign reading the address in the currently popular thin, flat font using metallic letters. The variety I have discussed makes a city unique and I tend to appreciate all of these trends even if they date a certain building or location.
