have you ever read child bride by suzanne finstead? do you find it accurate.
Tumblr media
thank you very much for this ask ꨄ︎!!
I have indeed read "Child Bride” and as for its’ accuracy I wouldn't go as far to say it's entirely inaccurate but I do have several bones to pick with Suzanne Finstad as a biographer as I believe she has let her bias (obviously not liking Priscilla) get in the way of her better judgment, which in turn, has corrupted the overall validity of her book. For example, giving Currie Grant a platform to tell his version of events regarding Elvis and Priscilla in Germany, including a claim so egregious that I truly have trouble understanding why so many in this fandom praise this book 😭
I think a lot of Elvis fans consider/recommend “Child Bride” as the antithesis to Priscilla’s “Elvis and Me” which is fair considering Finstad highlights some very valid criticisms against Priscilla i.e her hiring a second, much more aggressive, lawyer to get more money out of Elvis, and her introducing her family (Lisa Marie and later on Navarone) to the “church” aka cult of Scientology etc. etc.
- however -
The book as a whole comes at the expense of Elvis and what I mean by that is that Suzanne Finstad is not someone who has his best interest at heart (I mean look at what she has said in some of these recents documentaries about Elvis) and in order to push her narrative that Priscilla was some fourteen-year-old s*xual deviant, she has made some incredibly inflammatory statements about their relationship, and it literally starts with the title of her book (referring to Priscilla as Elvis’ “child bride”)
And the main reason as to why I cannot comprehend how fans praise this book is that Finstad goes with the story that Currie Grants tells, which includes him saying that Elvis (24) and Priscilla (14) were having penetrative intercourse after their 3rd or 4th date ⬇️
Tumblr media
excerpt is from “Child Bride” by Suzanne Finstad
So this is why I tend to cringe when I see other fans praise this book… I know it’s not their intention but they are inadvertently promoting a falsehood that says Elvis was committing statutory r*pe against a fourteen year old Priscilla
Not only does that go against what Priscilla and others have said about the physical relationship she had with Elvis in Germany, but it goes against the pattern that Elvis followed for almost every single (long-term) relationship prior to Priscilla and even after
A girl that Elvis deemed “special” or in other words- good enough to marry- was not a girl that Elvis was going to have penetrative s*x with, especially not when he had the more worldly starlets of Hollywood and the showgirls of Germany and Paris at his disposal
PRISCILLA PRESLEY: “In the past, he said that he wanted a virgin (to marry)”
DEBRA PAGET: “He always said he’d marry a virgin”
LAMAR FIKE: “Elvis respected virginity. He used to tell Alan, “I’ll never break a virgin. There are too many whores around”
We saw this with Dixie Locke, we saw this with June Juanico and Anita Wood, all of whom, in their many years of dating him never had penetrative s*x
We even saw this with women like Linda Thompson and Ginger Alden who he waited several months with before consummating
So because of that I have an incredibly hard time believing that Elvis would abandon his morals after just 3 or 4 dates with Priscilla, especially when he was having s*x with age appropriate girls like Elizabeth Mansfield, who often took Priscilla’s place in Elvis’ bed after she left
Another issue I have with “Child Bride” is that she has often either misquoted people, or written things that contradict what they have said to other biographers- basically many things haven’t added up when cross referencing between books
I have mentioned this one before but it is just so blatant, that I feel compelled to mention it again ⬇️
So here we have Joe Esposito re-telling a throwaway comment about Priscilla made by Elvis
Tumblr media
excerpt is from “Good Rockin’ tonight” by Joe Esposito
And then here we have Suzanne Finstad’s retelling of that comment, where she has misquoted Esposito in order to make Priscilla out to be the s*xual aggressor
Tumblr media
excerpt is from “Child Bride” by Suzanne Finstad
Instances like this give me extreme pause when determining if a biographer could be trusted or not- and when I was reading through her book again this comment about Sheila Ryan nearly made me bust out laughing
Tumblr media
excerpt is from “Child Bride” by Suzanne Finstad
“Sheila never had an orgasm when she was with Elvis”… like are we talking about the same Sheila Ryan or-? ⬇️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
excerpt is from “Baby let’s play house” by Alanna Nash
All in all, “Child Bride” definitely makes for an interesting read (mainly the second half of the book) but it’s one that I will probably never pick up again as I cannot get over Currie Grant’s involvement, especially his claims about Priscilla and Elvis that are completely unfounded
Scandal sells quite frankly and I no longer underestimate what people will say for money, ESPECIALLY when it comes to Elvis- I mean look at the claims made by Dee Stanley who got a whopping $100,000 from the National Enquirer to tell stories about a woman she never even met (Gladys)
So I would not be surprised in the least if Currie has been handsomely compensated for selling his stories to biographers like Finstad, because again, scandal sells, and him approaching Priscilla first isn’t nearly as page-turning as Priscilla offering up s*x in order to meet Elvis

A little Show and Tell from the Elvis: Day by Day book! It's so beautifully laid out, and I know it's very hard to come by, and when you do, it's VERY expensive, but I totally recommend getting a copy if you get a chance!
Of course I save Big Daddy for last! 😍🥵🤭

“When I awoke the next afternoon, I looked over at Elvis and snuggled against him as closely as I could. He put his arms around me, holding me as he slept. I studied his eyebrows, his long black eyelashes, his perfect nose, and his beautiful, full mouth. After a while I ached from lying in the same position but I didn't move; it might wake him. I thought about the pills he had taken earlier. They mystified me but I felt Elvis must know what was best for him and I decided to put the matter out of my mind. He must have sensed that I was staring at him; he suddenly opened his eyes and started to laugh. "What are you doing? If I didn't know any better, I'd think you were putting a hex on me." — Priscilla Presley “Elvis and Me”🩵

I finally happened across that exact quote from Larry's book about Elvis/Ginger/custody battles. I agree with your convo, that he was kind of grasping at straws (if this was indeed how the conversation went down). Either way, really interesting to see that he still wanted to fight for Lisa. :) https://imgur(.)com/a/0qBaou8
Tumblr media
Sorry I’m just now seeing this! Thank you for finding this! It is so interesting to see how Elvis was viewing Priscilla at this point. I have heard so many rumors/stories saying he was so depressed that Priscilla left him but this story says otherwise 🤭 But I do definitely believe he was grasping at straws like you said. If this indeed was his logic it feels very hypocritical of him to say he doesn’t like Priscilla sleeping with other men because it might confuse Lisa, while he was also going around sleeping with other women/dating other women. But perhaps he just said that because he was very desperate to get Lisa back and thought saying something like that would help him get full custody of Lisa. If he had lived, there could have been a huge custody battle over Lisa, and it would have been very interesting to see how exactly it all would have played out. But I guess it was not meant to be and we will never know.

hello all you beautiful people!
a little unknown fact about me: i love reading! i mainly read reference material and nonfiction, but i don't mind the occasional fiction! i have plenty of friends on here who like reading (after all, you're on my page!) and who love elvis, so i figured i'd make a compendium of books that were adapted into elvis' movies.
it will be organized by the movie / the year it came out, and the story / its author. i'll also include a little description of each.
Tumblr media
-love me tender (1956) & the story of the reno gang: this movie was not based on a story, but actual historical events! the reno gang were a group of brothers who went around the midwest robbing trains. clinton reno was a real person, the youngest of the five brothers (his nickname was "honest", as he never got involved with any criminal activity pertaining to his brothers.)
-loving you (1957) & a call from mitch miller by mary agnes thompson: the movie was based on a short story by mary agnes thompson that was featured in the june 1956 edition of good housekeeping.
-king creole (1958) & a stone for danny fisher by harold robbins: king creole was the first of el's movies to be based on an entire book! the role was originally meant for james dean, and was set in the backstreets of new york city.
-flaming star (1960) & flaming lance by clair huffaker: this was one of two movies where the original author was involved in creating the screenplay.
-wild in the country (1961) & the lost country by j.r. salamanca: although some creative liberties were taken (el's character went from an artist to a writer and hope lange's character became a psychiatrist rather than a teacher), it still followed the same plot as the original novel. it was also the first to feature elvis on a published paperback.
-follow that dream (1962) & pioneer, go home! by richard p. powell: the novel is based on a family from new jersey (WOOT WOOT), and although technically based on the book, the movie takes many creative liberties to the point of it being almost completely opposite the original source material.
-stay away, joe (1968) & stay away, joe by dan cushman: this is what el considered his first "serious" role. although involving some incredibly racist stereotypes, it is rooted in some truth about elvis' lineage: his great-great-great grandmother was a cherokee woman named morning white dove, and some attribute his high cheekbones and striking features to his distant native ancestry.
-live a little, love a little (1968) & kiss my firm but pliant lips by dan greenburg: the movie, like follow that dream, was so loosely based on the book that it was almost completely opposite the original source material.
-charro! (1969) & charro! by harry whittington: this is the only "officially endorsed" book based on an elvis movie.
-the trouble with girls (1969) & chautauqua by day keene: this is my absolute favorite movie of all time, and ironically, there is no information about the book's plot. based on what i've gathered from other sources, it follows an almost identical plot to the movie. unfortunately, the author died 9 months prior to the movie's release.
-change of habit (1969) & title-not-available by richard morris and john joseph: according to wikipedia, change of habit was based on a story written by richard morris and john joseph. i've scoured the internet under both of those names, and found nothing! oh well.
i hope you all had as much fun reading this as i did writing this, and be sure to shoot me a message if you read any of these!
(...or if you find a reasonably priced copy of chautauqua.)
-all my love, calla xx @kiankiwi @arianatheangel-girl @mooodyblue

We obviously all know this story. But it’s one of my faves and I love that audio of him laughing. But it’s what Charlie says at the end that is so true. Elvis can make you feel good in no time.

Elvis defending co-star
— Behind the scenes: "Kissin' Cousins" (released in 1964)
Tumblr media
PICTURE: Elvis and Cynthia Pepper in "Kissin' Cousins" (1964)
Producer of "Kissin' Cousins" (1964) and "Harum Scarum" (1965), Sam Katzman was a well-known "quickie" film producer and director, and apparently he was not a particular easy person to deal with.
NOTE: Beforehand, I'd like to say that with this post I do not intend attesting anything on Sam Katzman personality neither on his relationship with the full crew during Elvis' movie productions he was the producer, let alone during Mr. Katzman's career in Hollywood as a whole. This post is about the one incident in which Elvis was a nice guy to one of his female co-stars, using his influence and position to help them when needed. Whether the kind of behavior as told further on this post was typical for Mr. Katzman or not, or if he and Elvis got along well or not, I am not able to have a say on the matter for it is not of my knowledge in depth (I recommend you to read the comments to better understanding why my note seemed appropriate). Without further ado, let's read what happened in 1963 during the film production:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cynthia Pepper, Elvis' co-star in "Kissin' Cousins", released her memoir book, "Pigtails, Presley & Pepper", in 2014. A significant part of the book is devoted to Elvis and the film production, which took place from October 13 to November 14, 1963. She mentions Sam Katzman as a joker who no one really took seriously.
Regarding one incident during "Kissin' Cousins" production time, Ms. Pepper told the following:
Mr. Katzman did one particular thing to me that I didn't find amusing at all. One morning on the set in front of everyone he said to me, in a loud enough voice for all to hear: "Cynthia, why didn't you wake me up when the alarm went off this morning?" ... They (the crew) knew that he was a kidder and didn't take Mr. Katzman seriously but he was the guy paying the bills, so they laughed. Elvis, bless his heart, quickly took Mr. Katzman aside and quietly told him: "Knock it off. You're embarrassing her." Needless to say, the incident never happened again.

I just finished reading Arlene Cogan's book, Elvis: This One's For You, and I'm a mess!
First off, thank you so much @doll-elvis for taking the time to scan Arlene's book and sharing the digital file with all of us!
I thought Arlene wrote about her friendship with Elvis so beautifully and filled with nothing but respect and love for him. The one thing that really stood out to me was how in-tune he was with everyone around him. I do believe God blessed him with special gifts that He didn't give to anyone else, and Elvis was always searching for the reasons why God gave those gifts to him.
I could go on and on about what Arlene wrote, but I don't want to give the whole book away! I highly recommend reading her book! 💗
