"It certainly is looking like a ghost town here," Hakkai mused, looking around at the quiet empty streets, when the sun had barely even begun to set.

It's not that the place was uninhabited. In fact, they had just arrived and were planning to replenish supplies and secure lodgings for the night, only to find most of the establishments closed. Locked shut. The rest paid no mind to the travelers as they scurried on to their homes, like an age-old routine.

Come to think of it, he recalled overhearing the words of gossipmongers from the last village. Something about an old abandoned shrine at the outskirts of this one, said to be terribly cursed that it had driven the locals to shut themselves indoors before sundown in fear of being haunted by whatever evil that lurked. There were even claims that the villagers had resorted to offering human sacrifices to appease the restless spirits.

Of course, they were all simply rumors, but it would appear a good chunk of it was proven true. And while Hakkai enjoys a good horror story now and then, something about this plot did not sit right with him.

Before he could ponder on it further, however, a voice beckoned. An elderly gentleman, who seemed to be observing them with great interest, particularly-

"Young man, you are... the High Priest Sanzo, are you not?"

There was a blast of intense light and heat. His attempt at conjuring a barrier with his chi in the last second was for naught.

And for a moment, everything went blank.

The first thing Hakkai felt when he came to his senses was a sharp pain at the back of his head. He must've been thrown back and had a nasty landing. Sitting up only worsened the pain. He ached all over, most prominently... his vision was fading.

Helplessly he sat there as black shade began to fill his field of vision, like a dark curtain slowly covering his good eye.

Panicking and fretting would do nothing. So he looked around frantically for a familiar form and made his way over with haste. By the time he reached Sanzo, the darkness had fully enveloped his vision. Even with his prosthetic right eye still intact, this made him nearly blind at the moment.

He hated that he couldn't quite see how bad Sanzo's injuries were, carefully lifting him while still being on high alert in case their assailant was still around - only to grunt, nearly losing his balance as Sanzo gripped at his qipao.

"I'm going to need you to stay calm and focus, Sanzo." While his voice was rather hoarse, his tone was stern and words clear. Hakkai felt for his friend's arm, slinging it over his shoulders before getting to his feet while supporting Sanzo to the best of his ability. Slow and steady.

"Can you walk?"

He responds with a wry laugh. "You certainly take no prisoners in this game, do you? Even if that is our fate foretold, I doubt any of them would be too keen about playing the 'damsel in distress' role, so to speak. They may well be far too bullheaded to die."

"Many apologies to God or whatever divine entities delivering judgement upon us, but defying fate has pretty much become our thing apparently."

To embrace nothing. Someone once enlightened him on that philosophy.

“Body swap.” [Hakkai and Hinoka]

Our muses have swapped bodies for a thread ~

Ah, what a lovely morning. Nothing's out of place. Hinoka's deep auburn hair was brushed and up in a nice and neat bun, dressed clean and proper as she brewed some hot relaxing tea... that would hopefully calm the nerves rising on the inside.

Because in truth, there's at least one thing that's very much out of the ordinary.

While seemingly calm, Hakkai's mind was racing with questions and theories. From the looks of it, he had apparently taken the place of their dear exorcist companion. Physically at least. And when he saw 'himself' approach, he merely looked up, hands perfectly poised on the table while Hinoka's lips formed Hakkai's signature customer service smile.

"Good morning~" Came Hinoka's voice, testing the waters for a bit. "Ah... did you sleep well?"

A soft sigh left him, and he responded. "I've done my research on the land. The city-dwellers do not typically have the best reputation. Particularly... certain clans." Was it wrong of him to be concerned for his prince's safety? After all that had happened... The same prince who he had practically raised.

"As your advisor, I would advise against associating with known trouble." His tone was firm, only to grow softer as he continued. "And as your familiar, I would trust that you would at least consider the risks before acting on emotions."

That last part might've slipped, signifying just how much Hakkai was aware of.

"So I ask this if I may — why do you wish to see him?" He asked, as if he wasn't already dreading the answer he knew would likely come.

"Ahahaha~ ...Well, this is a predicament."

Hakkai looked down at the robes he was wearing. Familiar, but certainly wasn't his. Was it coincidence that this far out phenomenon happened after a pretty specific quarrel between them?

"Isn't it funny though? Right when we were discussing about 'walking a mile in each other's shoes. If this is karma, divine providence certainly has a quirky sense of humor."

It's unclear which was more uncanny - the way he seemed completely nonchalant about the whole thing, or such soft and gleeful tone was coming from the priest's voice. Let's not even mention the face...

"How are you feeling..." He looked towards the figure that looked very much like himself. "...Sanzo?"

Little Guy is sitting on Hakkai's shoulder. Every few minutes you'll hear an enthusiastic "Va!" when a rock is spotted on the ground.

The trip is going pretty well ~

They took in the view of Mount Fuji by Lake Kawaguchiko, and even spotted Godzilla at Shinjuku city! All while collecting interesting-looking rocks along the way.

Little Guy wants to go to Japan with Hakkai. He even packed himself a sock filled with rocks so he's ready to go!

Such infectious enthusiasm! Hakkai gently picks up Little Guy and helps with his sock luggage. He's also prepared snacks and blankets for the journey.

This shall be a trip of a lifetime for them ~
