He’d left Chicago because he wasn’t worthy of Jen’s love, and he’d done nothing in the seven months since to change that. He needed a purpose, and he had to stop waiting for one to come to him. Instead, he had to go find it.

 But then suddenly she was there on his television—Andre’s television—and he forgot everything except how much he missed her. He gaped at the screen as she talked and tried to quell the ache in his gut.

 “…today’s remnants of the riots from Greenwich Village. A reminder, thousands of young men and women homosexuals from all over the Northeast marched from the Village to the Sheep Meadow in Central Park three days ago, proclaiming ‘the new strength of pride of the gay people.’ This movement, which some are calling gay pride, rejects the oppression of gay men and women and demands equal treatment and respect in society and under the law.

 Thousands have taken to the streets, marching and protesting against police brutality and raids of gay bars and clubs. I’ve spoken to a number of protestors, and each reminds me that this movement has been long in the making. Stay tuned for further coverage.  “That a girl,” he murmured as the screen faded from her to the anchor in the studio.

 She looked amazing. A little more mature and stylish than she’d been in Chicago but also happy and confident. The slightly nervous energy she’d always portrayed on the screen in the Midwest seemed to have evaporated on the East Coast, and it was a good look on her.

 “Was that her?” Andre asked lazily, his grin visible from the dim corner. “That’s your chick?”

 “Yeah, that’s her,” he breathed.

 Andre took a hit and passed a bud to him, and Josh inhaled twice sharply. It took a few minutes, but the marijuana did exactly what he wanted, which was to loosen him up and relax. He couldn’t believe they were in the same city again, and he wondered briefly if they were drawn to each other unintentionally or if there were cosmic forces at work to reunite them. How could he explain to anyone that two people who lived in Kentucky ended up halfway across the country together at college in California, reunited and lived together in the Midwest, and then landed in the same city on the East Coast?

 Well, now he needed to get his shit together. The only problem was he had no idea how other than following his calling. He was an activist. That was part of him down to the marrow in his bones, and she was still a reporter. How was he ever going to reconcile that restless, never satisfied portion of him when Jenn was a part of the system? How could he fight “the man” when the woman he loved was part of it?

 “I can see the wheels turning, Hutch. What’s going on in that big, beautiful brain of yours?”

 Josh sighed and swiveled his head to face his friend. “I’ve never been good enough for her. I don’t know what to do except leave her alone, but I can’t stand being without her.”

 “You know, you don’t have to give up everything for a cause, especially when it’s not your own.”

 “They’re all my causes,” Josh protested. “Just because I’m not oppressed doesn’t mean I shouldn’t work for change.”

 “Just because oppression exists doesn’t mean you should martyr yourself.”

 Josh started to retort but snapped his jaw shut. The words hit hard and low in his stomach. His friend was right. Denying himself happiness wasn’t helping anyone else, and it certainly hadn’t made his or Jennifer’s lives any better. He’d broken both their hearts for far too long, and he had to figure out how to make it right.

 “You’re right, man. I know you are, but I’m just not there yet,” Josh sighed. “I think, though, that I might need to move here once I am.”

 “Always a spot here for you, Hutch.” After a few minutes of silence, Andre added, “There’s talk of an event here in a few months. Think you could stick around and facilitate planning? Might help you get your mind right, and then you can head back to California to see your brother and get the rest of your stuff.”

 “Yeah, I can do that, I guess. What is it?”

 “A concert. Somewhere upstate.”

 “A concert?”

 “Not just a concert. It’s a movement. Days of music, and all of us communing with nature.”

 Josh rolled it around in his mind for a few minutes. It sounded like something to occupy his time while he got himself together. The next day he met with the planners of an event they affectionately referred to as Woodstock.

 ****

 “Josh, I can’t tell you how much of a help you’ve been during this,” his boss said as they moved a stack of flyers into a crate. “I wasn’t sold when Andre asked me to take you on, but your creative ideas have been stellar.”

 “Just trying to help out however I can,” he responded. “Glad to have something to do that might help the cause.”

 “Every little thing helps. Now, you’re off for the week. Go enjoy some good music upstate. I’ll see you behind the scenes.”

 Josh gave a two-fingered salute and made his way back to Andre’s apartment. They were hitching a ride with some other friends and making their way north to the festival, and he still had to pack before they could leave. He was almost there when he decided to pop into the corner bodega and grab some food. Who knew what kind of opportunities there would be to eat with however many people showed up in Bethel? They’d had to change locations not long ago and they’d tried to plan for all eventualities, but that didn’t mean Josh couldn’t bring some extra sustenance.

 “Always be prepared,” he said to himself with a laugh and turned the corner. He stopped dead in his tracks. Not a hundred feet away was a woman with long blonde wavy hair. “Jennifer?”

 He chased after her, but he quickly realized it wasn’t her. The same thing happened at the festival several times. Woodstock was a gas, a writhing throng of bodies with music that transcended him and made him fly with happiness. For the first time in a while, he felt like he knew himself. He’d helped plan it. He’d thought ahead to bring food when so many others wasted time searching for dinner. He was surrounded by friends and people of like mind. The lack of restrooms and facilities to bathe didn’t bother him. That could all wait until he returned to the city, which came much too soon.

 Back at Andre’s, he smoked weed while he took a long, soothing bath. He jacked off lazily and let his mind drift to a slew of different times he’d been with Jen. He fantasized and planned and finally came to the realization that he needed to head back to California to tie up loose ends and spend time with his brother. Connor would help him focus. Being back where he and Jennifer had first met and fallen in love seemed like a good idea.

 “Tomorrow,” he decided. “I’ll buy my ticket. California, here I come.”

sorry for this but i need 2 ramble a lil

ok so like first off health-wise i’ve been able to eat again for about a month now which has been nice but i’ve been really timid and slow about it and only go for things that i’ve been able to keep down bc i don’t wanna risk it (i eat a hot dog like every day at this point tho most of what i’ve tried has stayed down without much issue at this point but i spit certain things out on instinct like shrimp. i can still taste certain stuff hours after eating it too but it seems hard to figure out what foods and stuff cause it. it seems like certain flavors?? spices maybe?? also i started drinking alkaline water bc i heard it might help and idk if it did/does but i drink it all the time. maybe it’s related to the rest of this?? idk)

i’m not totally out of those woods yet tho i don’t think bc my neck/throat has been super uncomfortable and even in pain almost 24/7 the entire time i’ve been able to eat again and idk what that’s about. i kinda think it might be like not scabbed over but like it’s recovering from me losing ~40 pounds out the mouth for a month or two lol but i’m also really easily scared that it’s something more serious and do everything i can not to think about it (chewing gum has helped tbh)

and i still have tons of what i think is indigestion (as in a lot of burping lol. also it feels like food might still come up if i don’t make a conscious effort to keep it down whenever i burp too much or w/e) and i’m also still pretty uhhhhhh (gross word incoming) constipated and i think it’s making my stomach/sides hurt as a result (tho it could be due to my lack of eating or what I do eat not being great for that?? idk tho like i demolish rails of crackers and i think those are good for that?? maybe??)

and idk what to really do about all that at this point bc like. i’ve run every test i can really think of?? all of them came back good somehow meaning i supposedly don’t have the bad stuff i thought i did but like ik something isn’t right or else my throat wouldn’t feel weird?? since i got approved for legal weed i got a lil dropper thing but i’ve been really nervous about using it bc i’ve never done anything like that before and i don’t wanna fuck anything up since at least i can eat rn y’know?? (which is also why i haven’t been taking any medicine, especially my prescriptions which legit seem like they made things worse which isn’t surprising since some of them legit conflicted with each other but i also kinda wanna try pepto or tums again or something but again i’m nervous about ruining what lil peace i have)

i kinda wanna go back to a doctor but since they’ve been.........annoying to work with at best and bc i’ve gone so much this year i don’t really wanna go again and waste time/money if they’re not gonna be able to diagnose me y’know?? the only tests i can think to do at this point are another endoscopy, the one that goes up the other end and/or a (gross word incoming) stool test which idk like after a full year of my issues seemingly evading the doctors intentionally it’s hard to convince myself it’d be worth it but also i wanna be better now like 100% better and im tired of not knowing why i’ve been like this

beyond that tho i’ve been sleeping like pure shit and not going to bed before like 6am at best most days and waking up around 10am-1pm every day meaning i don’t get a lot of sleep anyway hhhh and my fam’s getting real testy lol which means this big trip we have planned for august might be real fun (if i don’t stay home with the cats anyway) and plus i really miss the cat bugs which is making things worse bc i don’t have anything to hyperfocus on rn (other than halo and kh1 lol)

all this health stuff has really like changed me and i’d like to think it’s mostly for the better but i need to get thru it to know for sure. like i wanna eat healthier again like i was and i wanna feel like working out and shit and not be as afraid as i’ve been (which has been so bad that i’m typically afraid to sleep but that’s been the case all year tbh). writing the lil bit i’ve written seems to have helped but i also feel like i’m kinda stumped up with that again which bites. plus i kinda haven’t had anyone to talk to about any of this since april where a few of my friends went radio silent on me (which was v cool) and so it’s all kinda been stuck in my head and gradually building and making things worse im sure 

idk. i just wanna be thru this and start really being myself again. it also sucks bc i keep feeling myself crushing/loving on two ppl who i do wanna confess to but i don’t wanna do that till i know i’m gonna be okay for sure but to do that i gotta go to a doctor again but there’s no guarantee they’ll actually figure it out since they’ve been as clueless as me but kinda rude sometimes too and hhhhhhhhhhh

Could Recreational Marijuana Use Become Legal In Pennsylvania?

In late August of this year, amidst the pandemic and the storm it raged on the American economy, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf proposed the legalization of recreational marijuana use. The state of Pennsylvania had already legalized marijuana for medical purposes just a few short years ago in 2016, and Governor Wolf had also begun his campaign with the Lt. Governor to decriminalize marijuana in the state of Pennsylvania back in 2019[1]. However, the reason Governor Wolf has brought this to his Fall agenda in 2020, is due to the economic and social justice hardships that Pennsylvania faces due to COVID-19 and the other social issues surrounding the country right now. Wolf, along with Lt. Governor John Fetterman believe that with the legalization of recreational marijuana, the state will first be able to help those formerly incarcerated people whom were charged and arrested due to marijuana related charges, as well as being able to provide immediate and easy jobs to try and help stimulate the economy like it did in states like Colorado, who have already had the legalization of recreational weed use for a while[1].

More recently, in the past week or so, the Governor has pushed his marijuana legalization agenda again, urging the state and its other representatives to consider this path of economic and justice restoration. Their plan is to use part of the revenue that would be going towards already existing small business grants, Wolf states, “Half of these grants would be earmarked for historically disadvantaged businesses, many of which have had difficulties attaining other assistance because of systemic issues… The other portion of the revenue will go toward restorative justice programs that give priority to repairing the harm done to crime victims and communities as a result of cannabis criminalization.”[1] By legalizing marijuana, Wolf believes that it could bring around $500 million in tax revenue, and help to put the Pennsylvania economy back on its feet without having to risk too many people with Coronavirus exposure, slowly starting to trickle back into work again[2]. They also believe that by opening up this new “market” it will also open up new and easy job opportunities for those who may not specialize in anything, or who simply just need the money, especially during these economic times in the United States, and especially Pennsylvania[3].

However there has been backlash to the governor’s proposal, especially with the House Republicans. The caucus stated in response to Wolf and Letterman’s proposal that, "The Governor is trying to create new government programs, and tax the now-illegal recreational drug to pay for them.” [2]The House Republicans and other Pennsylvania native opposers bring up the important point of what these taxes being proposed could do to already struggling Pennsylvanian families who can barely afford what they owe now due to COVID-19. Their response to this was the House Republicans wanting to continue working with Governor Wolf on trying to get people back to work rather than having to resort to the legalization of marijuana[2]. The House Republicans stated, “Instead of legalizing drugs as a way to tax and spend on new government programs, the governor should work with the General Assembly to help get Pennsylvanians safely back to work, get our children get the best educational opportunities, and provide the return to normalcy Pennsylvanians long for.”[3]However, Governor Wolf assures that not all representatives see the bill he is proposing this way, comparing it to the prohibition on alcohol not holding at its time either[3].

Even with the political back and forth on this issue, for a steady three years, Pennsylvanians have polled yes for the legalization of marijuana in their state, while the opposers have stayed at a steady 30 percent of the poll[4]. According to the Governor’s website, “The majority of Pennsylvanians favor legalization and from the lt. governor’s report, three actions were outlined: a referendum on legalization, decriminalization and expungement of small possession convictions.”[1] However nothing has been done on the topic since 2019, which is why Wolf and Fetterman have been trying to push this agenda again. Even though many may not agree on his timing of this bill[2], it is something he, Fetterman, and the majority of Pennsylvanians believe in. As of today, their bill still has not gained the traction that was hoped for, but Governor Wolf still has it as one of his top priorities for his Fall 2020 agenda amidst this global pandemic.

One Year Later

Ft, Payne Zile Queen

How am I supposed to live without you?

A lone figure stood in black, a bouquet of black roses in her arms. The wind brushed her hair in a gentle caress as she stood with her eyes closed. One year ago...her life had forever changed. She had never forgotten the solemn look on the two soldiers’ faces as they stood on her doorstep giving her the news. She had been cleaning the house, getting it ready for his arrival home. Clarisse was more than ready for the future. She and Payne had plans. They were going to go away together, that was for one thing. They each had healing to do. She was just beginning to feel better. As long as she didn’t go near the nursery door, which he had padlocked shut. It was something they were aiming to clean together. He also hadn’t wanted her to go in alone. That was her love. Payne Queen had loved her since she was 21 and she had loved him too. He was considerate of her in every way. Instead, his trunk sat in their living room. It was all she would get back. Letters filled with condolences, medals, all the things befitting his rank. Everything except him. She couldn’t even bury him. There was nothing left of him. Instead, there was a memorial plaque in the garden of her French chateau. It read his name and a quote from Beethoven, whom they both had admired. ‘Ever thine, ever mine, ever ours.’ Pushing the thoughts from her still fragile mind, the vampire sighed deeply, walking through the barren landscape. Fog surrounded her, a gift, she supposed, along with the overcast sky. Perfect conditions for her to walk in the daylight hours. She raised her hand to the necklace she wore, a locket with his picture and a lock of his dark hair, and gave it a gentle caress. It had been with her all through her imprisonment during the war. She had managed to keep it and now, it was especially precious to her. Had it been a year already? A year prior, the United States had dropped two atomic bombs on Japan; one in Nagasaki and one in Hiroshima. The impact was still felt even now. People bore the scars both physically and emotionally. The war had ended shortly after, with the Japanese surrendering. No one dared to continue a war where such weapons could be used again. That they existed was horrifying to accept. No sort of weapon that could cause that much damage should be in the hands of humans. Still. Peace reigned. For now. Yet, for Clarisse, who had been working through her own traumas, this latest blow--the loss of her lover, it was nearly too much. She had spent a few months in a hospital, trying to make sense of things. But the stress, the trauma, the grief, all of it--it was too much. She had gone months without feeding, considering death an all too welcome choice. What was life if all she was going to feel was pain? She hadn’t a taste for it. Her friends had seemingly abandoned her--not a single one came to see her. None sympathized, nor expressed condolences. Whether they’d abandoned her or had too much in their own lives going on, Clarisse could not say, but it made her bitter. She who would have dropped everything if they needed her, was very much alone. It was this bitterness that had taken hold of her heart and her mind, and she had left the hospital as abruptly as she had arrived. Death came in the form of a mourning vampiress, one who did not care how many people she had to kill, but if it quelled her agony, she would do it. She had returned to Germany and weeded out the SS and Nazis, ripping them apart and leaving grotesque displays for all to see. The more they had begged her to stop, the more vicious she became. No one had stopped when she asked them to. Had they stopped when they'd tormented those in their camps? Yet one afternoon, she had heard his voice. “Risse...this isn’t you…” She had tried to dismiss it as her mind playing tricks, but she could feel his presence. He was surrounding her. If she closed her eyes, she would have sworn that she could smell his cologne and feel his hands resting on her hips. Clarisse kept her eyes closed. If they were closed, he was here. It was the first moment of peace she'd felt in months. “Payne…my love...” she uttered softly, tears rolling down her cheeks as she felt his lips press to her forehead and felt his sadness wash over her. She was disappointing him. That was more than she could bear. What good did this savagery do? It had brought her nothing but more pain. It had caused others pain, and it made her as bad as those she hated. And from that moment, she had resigned herself to honoring Payne’s memory. That was what had brought her here to this sacred place. And it was, indeed, sacred. So many thousands had died here. Lost their lives. Clarisse dearly hoped that someday, they would mark this place, as they planned to in Hiroshima, as a memorial. Though his name would not ever be listed amongst them, she wanted this to be somewhere she could visit and mourn with others. They too had the right to stand here and try to make peace with everything. However, the vampire was not inclined as to how to convinced the government to build a memorial. As she stood there, where the bomb had fallen one year prior, Clarisse let the energy fill her. It was, unsurprisingly, sad. Kneeling, she set the bouquet on the dirt and rested her hands on the ground, as if that would implore the earth to give up her lover. Tears rolled down her cheeks and onto the gravel. “My love, can you hear me?” she whispered. Her hands grasped at the earth, nails dug into it, and she wept, her entire body quivering as she openly sobbed, watering the ground with her tears. “I”m here. I came here for you. I came to bear witness.” She had wanted to come in the days just after the bombings but had been told it was far too dangerous for her to do so. The radiation and the fires--not to mention, she likely wouldn’t have been welcomed. The Japanese would view her as an outsider and it was better that she wait. Clarisse had finally given in and agreed to wait. Now, she was here. The silence was deafening. It was strange to be in a place where she didn’t need to block the thoughts and voices of others. It was simply that barren of life here. Her chest hurt as she took a deep breath. Had he been scared? Did he know it was coming? Had he sensed that there was something massive coming? Selfishly, she wondered if he'd thought of her before the bomb had landed, and cleared everything out for miles around. At least here, it hadn’t been as built up as Hiroshima, but still...equally as devastating. She had listened to accounts of it on the radio, read about it in papers, and magazines. She’d listened to people speaking of it. People were vaporized. Here one moment, gone the next. She hated to imagine that was what had happened to Payne, but as there was nothing left...she choked back another sob as the visual came to her mind and she clutched at the ground anew. “I miss you. I don’t know how to go through this without you. You’ve been a presence in my life since I was young. You’ve guided me. Loved me. Taught me. Protected me. What is my life now? I’m a broken thing, Payne, I swear sometimes you're here...I can hear you. I can feel you. But when I wake, it's simply darkness there,” she uttered. “Now I have to try and figure it all out. I don’t know who I am without you. I don’t know where I belong anymore. I called upon your mother and your father, I begged them to hear me...to give you back, but there was nothing. No one. I called to God and I pleaded with Him, and there was nothing. I have asked for help. I’ve begged for mercy. I have done everything I could possibly do...I call out to you and there’s silence. My biggest fear was to be alone...and here I am,” she whispered. “Alone.” Standing up slowly, she began to scatter the flowers, watching as the wind blew some away. “I am sorry to all who died here,” she apologised as if she had anything to do with the bombings. “I never would have wanted such a violent end, even for those who are my enemy. How many of you were just trying to live your everyday lives? How many of you were just here to help others? Every life here had meaning; had a purpose. And in the blink of an eye...” She shuddered, remembering images of the mushroom clouds. How many of those who had died were elderly? Young? Newly married? How many children died? There were so many questions and not enough answers. She shivered as cold air encircled her and she wrapped her arms around her frame. Once more, she felt his presence and as she closed her eyes again, she reached a hand out. Perhaps he could pull her through to wherever he was. Bring her from this place and into the next life--if there was one. She didn't know what to make of it all. Was it madness that had brought her here? Was she crazy, thinking he could take her from this place? She knew her mind was playing tricks and as she opened her eyes, she could make out a figure in the fog. She gasped softly, feeling a gentle sensation through her arm as if someone were brushing their finger along the length. She made a promise there, that every year, she would return. She would mourn the dead and mourn her husband. Though not legally married, they may as well have been. They called her his widow, why shouldn't she allow herself to accept the position--as unwanted as it was. The ambient surroundings seemingly came alive as bells began to ring in the distance and there was some singing. She didn't understand it but knew that they too were mourning the dead. It was time for her to go. The damp air was making her shiver and she was dirty. Not to mention, it wasn't bringing him back to her. Not that she really thought it would. Once she made her way back to her car, the driver drove her back to her hotel in silence. There was nothing that really needed to be said. Clarisse sighed softly as she stepped back into the plush building. Pausing as she passed by the grand ballroom. Within, someone was at the piano and they were playing 'Moonlight Sonata.' It took all of her will to make it to her room before sinking down onto her bed, weeping anew. Of all the songs....it could only validate that perhaps, even though he wasn't physically here, Payne was still with her. Reminding her, gently, to live. That she would endure, he would always be present in some way. And yet...it only hurt her more because she missed him so terribly. Demons were not all evil. Her beloved was not--and wherever he was, he had her heart and she had his. She knew that. He'd told her so countless times and if she hadn't, she doubted that he'd have come searching for her in the middle of enemy territory during a world war. Payne Zile Queen had left far too soon. But perhaps...he would live on. Through her.

Suicide? No Way - Part 3

Colby was pronounced dead on Aug. 26, 2019, after paramedics treated him in the middle of Interstate 64.) His questions were non-stop, but I know it was because he wanted me to do it the right way,” Darby said. “So, we would Snapchat each other when we were at the gym to be accountable. It really was one of our things.” But then there was August 26, 2019. Colby Brown was pronounced dead shortly after 7 p.m. after he worked out at his gym, attended both of his classes during the first day of his sophomore year, and played video games with five friends.

Colby was popular at Cameron High, a school he continued attending despite moving out of the district. “We were in contact on Snapchat at about 3:30 p.m. that day, but then at 6:35 p.m., I sent him a photo of me at the gym,” Darby said. “Usually, he would send something back that was supportive, but not that time. I didn’t hear back from him, and yes, I did think it was odd at the time because he always replied, especially when it came to the gym. “That day, though, the photo I sent him was opened, but there was no response, and I thought it was odd and rude that he wouldn’t answer me because he always did without fail,” she continued. “I mean, why would he open my message and not respond? Now, though, I’m not so sure it was him who opened that message. And then we found out that after that, his location was turned off on his phone right around the same time.” The end result is what is known. Colby Brown died that day on Interstate 64. A young lady who stopped when seeing him fall to the cement knelt over him during his final breaths. “It doesn’t add up, and that's why I still don’t know what really happened to Colby, and that is what is so infuriating,” Darby said. “I have all of these theories in my mind, but I don’t have enough information to make sense of a single one of them. I don’t know, and that’s why we’re so desperate for more information so we can know where he was and maybe why this happened. “It’s just not right. It’s been over five months, and we still don’t know anything new other than I don’t have my brother anymore,” she said. “And the state police still have not given back his phone because the investigation is said to be ongoing, but I wish they would just give it to us so we can go find the answers like we have been since this accident happened.”

His mother and his sisters were anti-frat for reasons of their own, but Colby was surrounded daily by members of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. His roommates and the boys with whom he was playing video games on the day he died, were mostly Alpha Sig members. If Colby had, in fact, decided to pledge to join his friends, no one in his immediate family was informed. “He had told us that he wasn’t really interesting in joining a fraternity, but all of his friends were fraternity members of Alpha Sigma Phi,” Gwen explained. “One of his roommates was the president of the fraternity, so I guess it is possible that he finally gave in and decided to pledge. “But if that turns out to be the truth, I’ll be very surprised,” she said. “But he was growing up, living on his own, and was making his own decisions. I do not know if he made that decision on the day he died, though.”

Alpha Sigma Phi is a national fraternity with more than 8,000 undergraduate members and 56,000 living alumni, according to the organization’s website. It was founded on Dec. 6, 1845, at Yale University, is the 10th oldest national fraternity in the nation, and is one of 12 fraternities at Marshall University. Investigations into behavior and hazing have taken place at Marshall concerning fraternities and sororities during the past five years. Jon Crow, once a family friend and a classmate of Colby’s, did not say anything when he visited for Colby’s funeral about the fraternity or whether or not he had decided to become a pledge. “All he told us was the same story over and over again,” Gwen recalled. “They all smoked a bowl of weed, and then Colby went downstairs because he didn’t feel good, and then he just left. That really doesn’t sound like something Colby would ever do. “I mean, he never just left without saying goodbye, so I don’t know. Obviously, we know he did leave, but like that?”

This card from his freshman year at Marshall University has Colby's name and Alpha Sigma Phi as the listed organization. Herd Life? The legal drinking age in West Virginia is the same as it is in the other 49 states – 21 – but that wasn’t an obstacle for Colby and his friends, Darby insisted. Why not? “Colby found out during his freshman year that there are bars in Huntington where you could get a special card and those bars will allow you to drink if you are pledging the right fraternity,” Darby claimed. “And yes, even if you are underaged. And Colby did get one of those cards from one of his friends, but he told us he used it only to go to that bar and that he was never really going to pledge the fraternity.

Colby's sister Darby insists that some establishments near Marshall University issue cards to fraternity members so patrons younger than 21 years old can consume alcohol. “I told him that it wasn’t his type of thing and I really didn’t want him to get involved with it because you hear so many stories from all over the country. But I also had a friend die at WVU because of hazing. Nolan Burch died because of that culture, and that made me worry about my little brother,” she said. “When it came to college, I was the person he went to because I graduated college just before he was a freshman at Marshall.” Once his personal belongings were collected from his apartment and his car, Gwen did find a new card for the Premiere Pub & Grill with no name or organization listed. The question Colby’s family has asked is whether the new card was another gift, or was it earned somehow this time? “I don’t know if he had to do something for it. Maybe,” Darbie said. “But I don’t know if he had to do something his freshman year to get that card. He just acted as if he just had to be interested in pledging to get it, but as for his sophomore year, that’s something we never talked about. “His freshman year, he had a card for Jake’s, but that bar closed down, but he had a couple of cards in his wallet from a place call the Premiere, and one of his roommates, Jon Crow, was a bouncer at that place,” she explained. “If he went down to Huntington with the intentions of pledging that fraternity, he hid it from us, and that wouldn’t have been like him. He wasn’t a secretive person with us.”

The initial report conducted by law enforcement indicated that Colby Brown had taken his own life. Colby? “The only way he would do anything like that is if he didn’t know it,” Darby insisted. “And that stuff didn’t come back on the first toxicology report that we finally received from the private investigator. All that was on it was marijuana and nothing else.

Colby had earned a Promise Scholarship and had plans to earn a business degree at Marshall University. “I know there was mention of him doing mushrooms, but that isn’t listed on that report either,” she continued. “He liked weed, and we all knew it so that is why we are anxious to get the second toxicology report that hopefully will be completed soon.” In 2017, 1,019 West Virginians died of an opioid overdose, and in 2018, 900 perished, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. Quick response teams are operational in 22 of the state’s 55 counties, and the first squad was formed in 2017 in Cabell County. A paramedic, a law enforcement officer, and a recovery coach are involved. “I know Huntington is ground zero for opioid deaths, but I also know my brother would have never gone there,” Darby said. “He was too concerned with his health and his body to ever do anything like that of his own accord. Now, was he slipped something without him knowing? We don’t know. “Colby has seen people in our family struggle with addiction, and it’s something he paid attention to and something he always said he would avoid at all costs,” she said. “I know he would not get on that path of opioid drugs even if he wanted to experiment with something. That was something he would never get involved with; that I know. He saw it destroy too many people.”

Colby was unable to take Penny to Marshall for his freshman year, but once he secured an apartment with friends, his canine went to college with him. A Shiny Penny No More Gwen’s voice changes when she begins to talk about her son. It lowers into persistent somberness and often is difficult to hear during conversations. She and Colby’s sisters are not alone in their sorrow. Penny, a canine Colby took to Huntington with him for his sophomore year, has changed, too. “At first, Penny would look for him any time she heard a car door or an engine rev up,” Gwen said. “But now, she acts depressed and just wants to sleep all of the time. She’s not the same dog she was, and she’s a 6-year-old Boxer. I just think she’s sad and that she’s lonely. She misses her best friend. “She doesn’t like to be left alone, either,” she continued. “Penny seemed angry during the first few weeks, but now she just seems so damn sad.”

Colby traveled with his family to Myrtle Beach in July 2019 and posed with his sister Darby for this fun photo. The family has been contacted since this series of stories began on January 11, and they are hoping and praying that more people step forward with any information they may know to be true. “That’s really what we want, so I’m glad that some of his friends are now reaching out to us to help us fill in the parts of his timeline that we don’t know yet,” Darby explained. “No piece of information is too small, either, because this is a big, giant puzzle we’re putting together ourselves because of the lack of help from the investigators. “If you talked to him the day before or the day of Colby’s death, that’s important to us, and if you talked to any of the people he was around during those days, that’s also important to us,” she insisted. “I would love to hear from more people; that’s for sure.” (Photos provided by the Brown family) Read the full article

Here's what the Surgeon General gets wrong about marijuana

Recently, the U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams sounded the alarm on cannabis.

There is nothing novel or altogether objectionable about the nation’s top public health official speaking out in an effort to discourage cannabis use, especially among young people and other potential higher-risk populations. However, the Surgeon General’s campaign launch emphasized a variety of questionable and inaccurate claims that not only undermine his credibility but also his cause.

For example, in an Aug. 30 tweet, the Surgeon General contended that youth access to cannabis has increased as a result of adult-use legalization laws. But this claim is not accurate. Adolescents self-reported ease of marijuana access has declined in recent years, according to peer-reviewed data.

Teen marijuana use is also falling, including in legal cannabis states. In fact, data published in July in the journal "JAMA Pediatrics" reports, “Consistent with the results of previous researchers, there was no evidence that the legalization of medical marijuana encourages marijuana use among youth. Moreover, … marijuana use among youth may actually decline after legalization for recreational purposes.”

National data compiled by the federal government affirms this. According to an August 2019 report issued by the United States Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, past-year marijuana consumption by those ages 12 to 17 has fallen consistently since 2002, from 15.8 percent to 12.5 percent. Since 2012, when Colorado and Washington became the first states to regulate adult-use access, past-year youth use has fallen eight percent nationwide.

The Surgeon General also trotted out the long debunked "gateway theory" — claiming that marijuana “primes the brain” for “the addiction to other substances.” In fact, as the US National Institute on Drug Abuse acknowledges, “[T]he majority of people who use marijuana do not go on to use other 'harder' substances.” Furthermore, most people who experiment with cannabis cease their use of it by their late-twenties, typically as they enter the workforce and begin to raise a family.

Some Breakfast Foods Contain More Glyphosate Than Vitamin D or B12

Concerns over the health effects of glyphosate — the active ingredient in Roundup and other weed killer formulations — continue to rise as evidence of harm and widespread exposure keeps accumulating.

In recent years, researchers have discovered it may affect your body's ability to produce fully functioning proteins, inhibit the shikimate pathway (found in gut bacteria) and interfere with the function of cytochrome P450 enzymes (required for activation of vitamin D and the creation of nitric oxide and cholesterol sulfate).

Glyphosate also chelates important minerals; disrupts sulfate synthesis and transport; interferes with the synthesis of aromatic amino acids and methionine, resulting in folate and neurotransmitter shortages; disrupts your microbiome by acting as an antibiotic; impairs methylation pathways; and inhibits pituitary release of thyroid stimulating hormone, which can lead to hypothyroidism.1,2

Roundup has also been linked to certain cancers.3 In March 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate as a "probable carcinogen" (Class 2A),4 based on "limited evidence" showing the weed killer can cause Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and lung cancer in humans.

Since then, thousands of individuals have filed suit against Monsanto, blaming Roundup for their Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.5 The first case to go to jury trial resulted in a stunning guilty verdict, and Monsanto was ordered to pay the plaintiff, Dewayne Johnson, $289 million in damages.6

According to the ruling, Monsanto "acted with malice or oppression" and was responsible for "negligent failure" by not warning consumers about the carcinogenicity of its product. A judge recently upheld the guilty verdict, but reduced the damages to $78 million.7,8,9 Bayer, which now owns Monsanto, is also facing several class action lawsuits over crop damage caused by dicamba.10

Another Round of Food Testing Raises Concerns About Glyphosate in Food Supply

A second round of food testing11,12 by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) now reveals glyphosate is a staple contaminant in Cheerios breakfast cereals and Quaker Oats products. All 28 samples contained glyphosate; 26 at levels suspected to be harmful to children's health.

In the first round of testing,13 published in August 2018, 43 out of 45 food products made with conventionally grown oats tested positive for glyphosate, 31 of which had glyphosate levels higher than EWG scientists believe would be safe for children. This included Quaker Dinosaur Eggs instant oatmeal, Cheerios cereal, Nature Valley granola bars, Quaker steel cut oats and Back to Nature Classic Granola.

Five of 16 organic oat foods also contained glyphosate, although at levels below EWG's health benchmark of 160 parts per billion (ppb). (For comparison, the legal limit set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for glyphosate in oats is 30,000 ppb.)

However, while the EWG's proposed safety level is nearly 188 times more stringent than that of the EPA, Alex Lu, an associate professor of environmental exposure biology at Harvard, who has researched pesticides in children's diets, believes EWG's threshold is conservative and may still be too high. "This is especially true for parents buying breakfast cereals for their infants and children," he told Business Insider.14

In this latest round of testing, EWG focused exclusively on Cheerios and Quaker Oats products. Of the 28 products sampled this time around, Quaker Oatmeal Squares (brown sugar and honey nut flavors) fared the worst, containing nearly 18 times more glyphosate than the EWG's safety threshold (2,746 ppb and 2,837 ppb respectively).

In third and fourth place came Cheerios Oat Crunch (cinnamon flavor) and Quaker Overnight Oats, with 1,171 ppb and 1,029 ppb of glyphosate respectively. You can find a complete list of test results on EWG's website.15 As noted by EWG:

"This round of tests confirms and amplifies EWG's findings from the first round, with levels of glyphosate consistently above our children's health benchmark in every sample but two."

There's No Safe Limit for Pesticides for Children

As you'd expect, General Mills (which makes Cheerios) and Quaker (owned by PepsiCo.) insist their products are safe since they comply with EPA standards, and that the glyphosate levels are too minute to pose any health risks anyway.

In a statement to CNN, a General Mills spokesperson said, "The extremely low levels of pesticide residue cited in recent news reports is a tiny fraction of the amount the government allows."16 However, there are a number of problems with this stance.

First of all, just because it's within legal limits doesn't mean it's safe. There's evidence suggesting the EPA has colluded with Monsanto to downplay glyphosate's harmful effects, and since glyphosate has for decades been wrongly believed to be harmless, there's reason to suspect EPA limits — which were set in 2008, well before most of the incriminating evidence against glyphosate came out — may be too high. As noted by EWG:17

"EWG does not believe chemicals linked to cancer belong in children's food. Our recommended maximum daily intake of glyphosate in food is 0.01 milligrams. For a 60-gram portion of food, this daily intake limit translates to a safety standard of 160 ppb of glyphosate. This health benchmark is based on the risks of lifetime exposure, because small, repeated exposures can add up if someone eats food containing glyphosate every day."

Indeed, few people, and children in particular, eat only a single serving of a single food containing glyphosate on any given day, and when just about every food on the market is contaminated with glyphosate, how can anyone claim children are consuming safe or negligible levels?

Urine output of glyphosate shot up by more than 1,200 percent between 1993 and 2016,18 so clearly glyphosate exposure is a growing problem. Even if there were limited danger from glyphosate, no organization or agency is looking at the synergistic effects of combining it with other chemicals in our food supply, including other pesticides.

It's also important to realize there's no known safe limit for any pesticide for children. There is no published scientific evidence to demonstrate any level of safety for children. There are, however, studies indicating that there really is no level at which pesticides are safe for children since:

Chemicals in parts per trillion amounts can have an effect on fetal development, and may affect a child all through puberty and beyond

Children's detoxification pathways are not yet fully developed. They do not have the detoxification enzymes in their livers that adults have, so their ability to eliminate even tiny amounts of pesticides and other harmful chemicals is limited

More Glyphosate Than Vitamin D or B12 in Some Breakfast Products

What's more, EWG makes a really compelling comparison in this last report:19

"[W]hen EWG scientists compared the amounts of added vitamins and nutrients to the amount of glyphosate contamination in Honey Nut Cheerios, we discovered that if pesticide contamination were required on ingredient labels, glyphosate would be listed above vitamins D and B12."

This is an explosive conclusion. These kinds of breakfast cereals are marketed as "good nutrition," in part due to being fortified with important nutrients, yet they contain higher amounts of toxic glyphosate than added vitamins! That's nothing short of crazy.

Oats Would Have Virtually No Glyphosate Residues if Farmers Quit Using the Chemical as a Preharvest Drying Agent

One key point to realize here is that there's no good reason for this massive glyphosate contamination. While genetically engineered Roundup-ready crops will as a rule contain glyphosate, this chemical is unnecessarily sprayed on wheat, barley and oats as a preharvest desiccant to dry the grain faster.

As noted by EWG, "In fact, the highest levels of glyphosate are found on foods treated this way, and unlike GMO corn and soybeans, these foods often make up a large part of the American diet." Farmers do not need to use glyphosate in this way, and these kinds of test results clearly indicate that we as consumers must insist on a change.

EWG, along with nearly a dozen food companies, recently filed a petition20 with the EPA, urging the agency to prohibit the use of glyphosate as a preharvest drying agent. By eliminating glyphosate from this practice, much of this contamination simply would not occur. As noted by EWG:21

"Using glyphosate for harvesting oats is not necessary and not worth risking children's health … Protecting children's health from pesticides is essential, and cancer-causing chemicals do not belong in children's meals, whether served at home, in a child care center or at school …

You can take steps to minimize hefty doses of glyphosate in foods by choosing organic. Although small amounts of glyphosate have been detected in some organic foods, every organic sample tested in our first study was well below EWG's health benchmark.

EWG president, Ken Cook adds, "Our message to General Mills, Quaker and other food companies is that you can take the simple step of telling your oat farmers to stop using glyphosate. You can hide behind an outdated federal standard, or you can listen to your customers and take responsibility for cleaning up your supply chain. It's your choice."

Novel Testing Project Reports Finding Glyphosate in Human Hair

Other glyphosate testing done by The Detox Project22 in collaboration with Kudzu Science reports finding glyphosate in human hair samples.23

Seven of the 10 hair samples contained over 66 ppb — far higher than the 3 ppb previously found in urine samples — and six of them also contained AMPA, the main metabolite of glyphosate, at 330 ppb or higher. While urine testing reveals what you've been exposed to in the past two to three weeks, hair testing shows your accumulated exposure over the past three to four months. Sustainable Pulse reports:24

"The Kudzu Science mass spectrometry gold standard method used for testing glyphosate, AMPA and glufosinate is fully validated, which gives these results even more significance.

The Detox Project director, Henry Rowlands, stated … 'Even at this early stage of testing we believe it is vital to warn the public and regulators that glyphosate is being found in human hair. The levels found are surprising to everyone involved, as we have been working on urine testing with university and commercial laboratories over the past four years and we have never seen such results.'

One of the main questions now for the public, scientists, regulators and the pesticide industry, is how are such levels of the world's most used herbicide first entering the blood stream and then ending up in our hair?"

Food Testing Strongly Suggests Glyphosate Contamination Is a Massive Problem

Aside from the tests already mentioned, a number of others have made it crystal clear that our food supply is suffering from severe glyphosate contamination. For example:

U.S. Department of Agriculture testing done in 2011 revealed glyphosate in all soybean samples tested.25

Limited testing for glyphosate done by the FDA in 2016 found glyphosate in virtually all foods tested, including wheat crackers, granola cereal, corn meal, oatmeal products and honey.26 The only food found to be free of glyphosate was broccoli. The glyphosate in corn was found to exceed tolerance levels. It was detected at 6.5 parts per million (ppm) and the legal limit is (5.0 ppm).

In 2016, tests27 conducted by the nonprofit organizations Food Democracy Now! and The Detox Project found glyphosate residues in a variety of foods including Doritos, Oreos and Stacy's Pita Chips.

The current threshold for HRI Labs is 0.5 ppb. If you're below that threshold, your exposure is low and you're unlikely to experience adverse effects. If your levels are high, you would be wise to address your diet and consider buying more organic foods.

In the first round of testing,13 published in August 2018, 43 out of 45 food products made with conventionally grown oats tested positive for glyphosate, 31 of which had glyphosate levels higher than EWG scientists believe would be safe for children. This included Quaker Dinosaur Eggs instant oatmeal, Cheerios cereal, Nature Valley granola bars, Quaker steel cut oats and Back to Nature Classic Granola.

Five of 16 organic oat foods also contained glyphosate, although at levels below EWG's health benchmark of 160 parts per billion (ppb). (For comparison, the legal limit set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for glyphosate in oats is 30,000 ppb.)

However, while the EWG's proposed safety level is nearly 188 times more stringent than that of the EPA, Alex Lu, an associate professor of environmental exposure biology at Harvard, who has researched pesticides in children's diets, believes EWG's threshold is conservative and may still be too high. "This is especially true for parents buying breakfast cereals for their infants and children," he told Business Insider.14

In this latest round of testing, EWG focused exclusively on Cheerios and Quaker Oats products. Of the 28 products sampled this time around, Quaker Oatmeal Squares (brown sugar and honey nut flavors) fared the worst, containing nearly 18 times more glyphosate than the EWG's safety threshold (2,746 ppb and 2,837 ppb respectively).

There's No Safe Limit for Pesticides for Children

As you'd expect, General Mills (which makes Cheerios) and Quaker (owned by PepsiCo.) insist their products are safe since they comply with EPA standards, and that the glyphosate levels are too minute to pose any health risks anyway.

In a statement to CNN, a General Mills spokesperson said, "The extremely low levels of pesticide residue cited in recent news reports is a tiny fraction of the amount the government allows."16 However, there are a number of problems with this stance.

First of all, just because it's within legal limits doesn't mean it's safe. There's evidence suggesting the EPA has colluded with Monsanto to downplay glyphosate's harmful effects, and since glyphosate has for decades been wrongly believed to be harmless, there's reason to suspect EPA limits — which were set in 2008, well before most of the incriminating evidence against glyphosate came out — may be too high. As noted by EWG:17

"EWG does not believe chemicals linked to cancer belong in children's food. Our recommended maximum daily intake of glyphosate in food is 0.01 milligrams. For a 60-gram portion of food, this daily intake limit translates to a safety standard of 160 ppb of glyphosate. This health benchmark is based on the risks of lifetime exposure, because small, repeated exposures can add up if someone eats food containing glyphosate every day."

Indeed, few people, and children in particular, eat only a single serving of a single food containing glyphosate on any given day, and when just about every food on the market is contaminated with glyphosate, how can anyone claim children are consuming safe or negligible levels?

Urine output of glyphosate shot up by more than 1,200 percent between 1993 and 2016,18 so clearly glyphosate exposure is a growing problem. Even if there were limited danger from glyphosate, no organization or agency is looking at the synergistic effects of combining it with other chemicals in our food supply, including other pesticides.

It's also important to realize there's no known safe limit for any pesticide for children. There is no published scientific evidence to demonstrate any level of safety for children. There are, however, studies indicating that there really is no level at which pesticides are safe for children since:

EWG, along with nearly a dozen food companies, recently filed a petition20 with the EPA, urging the agency to prohibit the use of glyphosate as a preharvest drying agent. By eliminating glyphosate from this practice, much of this contamination simply would not occur. As noted by EWG:21

"Using glyphosate for harvesting oats is not necessary and not worth risking children's health … Protecting children's health from pesticides is essential, and cancer-causing chemicals do not belong in children's meals, whether served at home, in a child care center or at school …

I’m 34. I used to be a pothead from the ages of 15-25. Some weird things happened in my life and somehow I became an alcoholic. I’ll spare you the details.

I’ve basically been drinking myself to sleep for the last year. I’m a small guy, 5’6”, physically fit, so two 24 ounce cans of Steel Reserve plus another 24 ounce like Natural Ice (for the 5.5% ABV) will calm me enough to drift off to sleep.

Anyway so I decided to try CBD maybe five days ago. I thought it would be a ripoff. I’m in Illinois and recreational weed is legal but difficult to get especially during COVID19, and I’ll spare you the details of why I don’t smoke weed anymore as well.

So I get the possible ripoff CBD joints from my local shell gas station. If anything, they taste really nice. I was drunk when I bought them and now I keep buying them and enjoy smoking them before I go to sleep. I actually have been enjoying less interrupted sleep since I started this habit (when you’re an alcoholic your sleep totally sucks).

So now here’s the thing, the question, the major result, the reason I’m making this thread.

At the end of my bike courier shift, around 9, is when I start drinking on the train commute home. Typically I finish all 3 24 oz cans within the hour and 20 minute train ride, arrive home, eat something and fall asleep.

I’ve noticed that now that I have CBD in my system, just 18 hours or so after use, the effects of alcohol are different.

Battling California Wildfires And Slave Wages Amidst Global Pandemic

Even during the crises occurring during the current global pandemic, California wildfire season has come upon the state with full force. With record temperatures, and super dry conditions, wildfire season is bad as it has ever been for the Golden State. Due to the mere sizes and amount of fires present in California at any given time, the state not only relies on certified firefighters and volunteers, but also on current imprisoned people given the proper firefighting training. These incarcerated people are serving non-violent charges, and are weeded out of the violent population of their prisons in order to even be considered for the job. Many of these inmates decided to join their prison’s firefighting force because it offered lesser sentences in exchange for the more work they did[1]. However, the big difference for these imprisoned firefighters is the inhumane pay they receive for their life threatening work, as well as their inability to become full fledged firefighters once they leave prison.  

This is about to change however due to a bill just passed by California Legislation that will allow these former prisoners to be able to join fire departments, become certified, and be paid a livable wage with the skills that they acquired during their work as inmates. “The bill, known as AB 2147, gives nonviolent offenders who have spent time fighting fires the opportunity to have their records expunged so they can become firefighters,” according to an article published on Spectrum News 1 earlier this month[2]. One of the reasons the state has decided to finally pass this bill is due to COVID-19. Due to the pandemic, the state has released many of these past incarcerated firefighters early, in order to help stop the spread of COVID in crowded prisons. They have also had to stop the inflow of imprisoned firefighters to the front lines due to quarantine and the CDC guidelines of large groups and gatherings at their fire training camps, as well as closing several of these correctional facilities due to many inmates and guards catching the virus, and many dying because of it[3]. However, this has become a problem for California due to their restriction of prior inmates becoming legal firefighters regardless of their past history and work experience fighting them in the past. 

Another reason as to why this bill is being passed now, is due to the backlash the state of California has been receiving for years about the pay these inmates receive for their work as well as not being able to come out with a job they are well qualified to do. People in California pay high enough taxes to the point that these prisoners being paid what is essentially a slave wage, is absurd to many residents of the state[2]. Assemblywoman Reyes, the one who has headed the bill states, "If we really want to bring about change and lower our recidivism rates, we have to ensure that those that have served their sentences have an opportunity for meaningful employment,” said Sunday in a tweet. "Those that have served on the fire lines deserve a second chance.”[2]Assemblywoman Reyes has been pushing for this bill since the beginning of this year, and just now has been able to amend and pass it through the state house, and on its way to Governor Newsom. With this new bill being passed, it would allow these former inmates to be able to get their record cleared in order to pass the strict background checks and licenses provided by the state to become a full fledged firefighter. The bill lays out the numerous restrictions and rules in order to become a firefighter out of prison, including pretty much any violent crime or history behind the individual applying for the position[4].

There is still a long way to go in terms of prison labor provided for the state of California, including their basic slave wages, and exploitation of their work and ethic battling these wildfires. However, this new bill is one step in the right direction towards helping those who have formally been incarcerated find a good job, and stay on the right track to avoid having to go to prison once again, especially during these economic times as COVID-19 continues to ravage the country.

Roundup Weedkiller Is Blamed for Cancers, but Farmers Say It’s Not Going Away

Independent market researchers project that the global market for glyphosate, the key ingredient in the weedkiller Roundup used by farmers, could reach $12 billion by 2024. From his farm in northwestern Wisconsin, Andy Bensend watched as first one jury, then another and another, delivered staggering multimillion-dollar verdicts to people who argued that their use of a weedkiller sold at nearly every hardware and home-improvement store had caused their cancer.

Mr. Bensend has been using that product, Roundup, on his 5,000 acres for 40 years, but he said that those blockbuster awards would not alter his farm practices one whit. Neither would the 20,000 lawsuits still pending.

“Roundup is still a fabulous tool,” said Mr. Bensend, who grows corn, soybeans and alfalfa. He relies on Roundup’s key ingredient — glyphosate — to easily kill weeds, helping increase his yields and reduce his costs.

The faith that American farmers like Mr. Bensend have in Roundup is what prompted the German company Bayer to spend $63 billion in 2018 to buy Monsanto, the herbicide’s creator. And it is now what undergirds Bayer’s confidence that Roundup will remain a moneymaker, even if the company ends up paying billions of dollars to settle the legal morass it inherited with the sale.

A settlement has been looking more likely. Bayer submitted a confidential proposal this month after a federal judge in California ordered it to enter into negotiations with plaintiffs’ lawyers and appointed the victim-compensation expert Kenneth R. Feinberg to lead them.

More important, rattled investors have ratcheted up pressure on Bayer to put the litigation behind it. The three court losses undermined confidence in what is now the world’s largest pesticide-and-seed company. The stock lost nearly 40 percent of its value at one point, turning a celebrated corporate acquisition into a seeming fiasco. At this year’s spring meeting, shareholders delivered what amounted to a rare vote of no confidence in Bayer’s chief executive, Werner Baumann.

Some institutional investors say that without a deal, Mr. Baumann is unlikely to survive next year’s annual meeting. But they also insist that their gamble on Bayer will pay off.

Glyphosate is already the most widely used agricultural chemical in history, and farmers will continue to depend on Roundup, investors reason, especially as a growing population increases the demand for food.

Independent market researchers project that the global market for glyphosate could reach $12 billion by 2024, regardless of health worries.

Liam Condon, president of Bayer’s crop science division, said the litigation “doesn’t fundamentally change the rationale” for its purchase of Monsanto. As for Roundup, he said, “We are committed to making sure the product remains available.”

Consumer-protection and health groups have long warned about the safety of chemicals and pesticides used in agriculture. But alarm about a cancer link with Roundup exploded in 2015, when the International Agency for Research on Cancer, an arm of the World Health Organization, reviewed public studies and concluded that glyphosate can “probably” cause cancer.

The chemical was introduced to commercial agriculture in 1974. But the Roundup revolution took off in 1996, when Monsanto started selling genetically modified seeds that produced crops resistant to the herbicide’s attack on weeds.

“We spray the weeds and the crop keeps growing, and it’s just lovely,” said Lorenda Overman, who has 4,000 acres in eastern North Carolina.

Although the patent on glyphosate expired in 2000, the combination of Roundup and Roundup Ready seeds has ensured the products’ continued popularity.

Farmers saw their costs fall. Glyphosate was also considered less toxic and environmentally friendlier than many of the other substances that American farmers were using.

“We used to till the ground, then plant, then go back and plow at least twice, and then spray a chemical,” said Ms. Overman, who grows soybeans, corn and wheat. “Now we’re not tilling at all,” which means less soil erosion and less chemical runoff.

“We’re not using that diesel fuel,” she added, “and our employees are doing other things so they’re more productive.”

Now, 94 percent of soybean crops and roughly 90 percent of cotton and corn grown in the United States are resistant to glyphosate. According to estimates by the United States Geological Survey, 287 million pounds of glyphosate was sprayed nationwide in 2016, 20 times as much as was used in 1992.

The phenomenally fast adoption of such a transformative technology, though, unsettled the public and spurred fears about the safety of the food supply. Glyphosate was drawn into the bitter public debate over genetically engineered crops.

The international cancer agency’s report immediately turned into a rallying point for critics, and provided ammunition to mount legal challenges to Roundup’s safety. In succeeding years, several countries, localities and school districts banned or restricted its use. Some retail outlets, including Costco, stopped selling it. Just this month, Germany, Bayer’s base, announced it would ban glyphosate by the end of 2023.

Monsanto and other agrochemical companies denounced the agency’s 2015 findings as incomplete and one-sided and lashed out at critics.

Bayer continues to maintain that decades of scientific studies have repeatedly shown glyphosate to be safe. Regulators around the world, in Canada, Australia, the European Union and the United States, have for the most part agreed.

As recently as August, the Environmental Protection Agency issued a ruling that it would not approve any product labels that said glyphosate caused cancer, stating it was a “false claim.”

In the court cases over Roundup, though, plaintiffs’ lawyers used evidence of Monsanto’s attempts over the years to influence regulators, shape scientific research and discredit critics to undermine governmental pronouncements.

Documents released as a result of the litigation, for example, included a confidential report from a consulting firm that Monsanto hired in 2018, which assured company executives that a White House adviser had said, “We have Monsanto’s back on pesticides regulation.”

It also summarized differences between the “professional” staff at the E.P.A. and the “political” employees over what the scientific evidence about glyphosate indicated.

Bayer now pledges to do business differently. It has announced that it will release all crop-safety studies — including the negative ones — and identify third-party funding so there is no confusing independent research with industry-financed work.

Most of the lawsuits filed so far have been brought by homeowners and groundskeepers, estimated R. Brent Wisner, a plaintiffs’ lawyer who worked on the Roundup trials and represents clients in more than 3,000 additional cases. Those kinds of buyers account for a only small slice of Roundup sales. Farmers are by far the primary users, and many say they are satisfied with glyphosate’s safety record.

“In my eyes, it’s one of the least harmful chemicals we use, and we will continue to use it,” said Brad Kremer, a crop and dairy farmer with 3,000 acres in Pittsville, Wis., who is also on the board of the soybean association.

Glenn Brunkow, a fifth-generation farmer who grows soybeans, corn and wheat in the northeastern corner of Kansas, has been using Roundup for 30 years and doesn’t plan to stop. “If we lost Roundup, it certainly would make no-till more difficult,” said Mr. Brunkow, who is on the Kansas Farm Bureau’s board. “I worry about public outcry overshadowing real science.”

It may turn out that the most daunting threats to glyphosate’s dominance and Roundup sales aren’t health concerns or lawsuits but weeds themselves.

As use of the herbicide exploded, resistant variants evolved, an assemblage of weed Avengers that can withstand higher concentrations of glyphosate or shrug it off altogether. Palmer amaranth, an Iron Man of superweeds, for instance, grows to eight feet and arms each plant with a million seeds.

“That is the much bigger issue,” said Scott H. Irwin, a professor in the department of agricultural and consumer economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Whatever the cumulative effect of the lawsuits, he said, “in farmers’ minds, the weed-resistant question will determine whether they’re using it or not.”

That is one reason Bayer announced in June that it planned to invest $5.6 billion over the next 10 years in research on weed control. Whatever alternatives are developed, though, Mr. Condon at Bayer said glyphosate would remain a base product. And farmers seem receptive.

“I’ve used it for over 40 years, since I was first around the farm,” said Davie Stephens, who has 6,000 acres in Clinton, Ky., and is president of the American Soybean Association. “I’ve never had any problems whatsoever, and the farming community uses it more than anyone.”
