When I was a boy, I had an Irish setter named Rip (short for Europides). Ever since then I've always loved the breed, how beautiful they are! So I thought I'd like to get an Irish setter-Golden retriever mix for my next dog, thinking that the more placid demeanor of Goldens would help balance the more highly strung setters -- yet by finding a mix, there'd hopefully still be some of the more flowing lines of the setter. The trouble was that almost everyone who had a Golden tended to breed them with other Goldens, and the same was true of the setters. But I allowed my fantasy to go to the next stage, of not only visualizing what the dog would look like, but actually naming it. If I could ever find such a dog I was gonna name it Oedi-paws Rex (Rex for short).

At this time I was working weekends as an apprentice learning how to run a charter fishing boat. (The one I was working on was berthed at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco). The very next day after hitting upon what I would name the dog, I was cleaning out the garbage left on the boat after a day of salmon fishing. I noticed an ad in the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper's classified advertisements for a 6 month old puppy, half Irish setter, half golden retriever. It was strange to find the very thing I wanted listed in the paper, the very next day after coming up with the name -- because I had been looking for such a dog for many months.

I immediately called the phone number listed. The woman answering the phone at the other end said, "Hello, this is PAWS"

"What does PAWS stand for?"

"Pets Are Wonderful Support--we're a support agency for people who have life threatening illnesses and need help in keeping their pets."

I told her I was responding to the add for the puppy that was part Irish setter and part Golden (that I was gonna name Oedi-PAWS Rex). "Oh," she said, "his name is REX--he's owned by a man dying of AIDS who can no longer keep him."

And Rex and I have been together ever since.

The other day at work, the man I work with walked out into the plant, and I thought maybe he was headed home after taking care of someting in the plant. I looked at our clock, and it said five till five. Just then, one of the estimators came into the design room, looking for some layouts we had been working on. She asked where Bill was, and Bill came back into the room. I told him what she was looking for, and he started to go over the layout with her. I looked at the clock a couple of minutes later, and it read twenty minutes till five!!! I KNEW I had read the clock at work properly, and that it has always worked properly...it was very eerie!

Another incident happened a few months ago when my wife and I took our boy to a Chuck E. Cheese pizza restaurant and play area for kids. We were leaving later in the evening, and my wife voiced her concerns about it still being open. I told her that Chuckie's was open until midnight. She doubted that, saying she had always thought they closed at eleven o'clock. I had been there with my son one evening a few months before, and could have sworn they were open until midnight. When we got there, I asked one of the girls who worked there what the hours were, and she informed me that they were open until eleven! I asked her if they had they changed their hours, and she said they had ALWAYS closed at eleven! Now I'm wondering if I should go back some evening... will they once again be open until twelve?!

I had been reading about reality shifts and was already forewarned that I might begin to notice more of these amazing events occurring in my life since I was actively attending to their possibilities. But, I had no idea that a reality shift would happen to my eight-year-old son as well simply because he was with me!

My son had just jumped on the Pokemon bandwagon, so to speak, and each Friday, in lieu of his allowance, he had asked me if I would take him to the store to purchase Pokemon action figures. Now, there are probably fifty or more figures available, but my son had his heart set on one package of figures, and one package ONLY, during this particular week. Finally, Friday rolled around and when I picked him up at school, he asked excitedly, "Can we go get the Pokemon now?" He must have been waiting with baited breath all day long for his Friday splurge, and probably spent a good portion of that day daydreaming about his upcoming purchase!

We went straight to the store and there was no doubt about what we were going to purchase when we got there: Golum and Geodude. (For those of you who don't recognize these odd names, they are simply two Pokemon that are packaged together -- the two he just HAD to have)!

The Pokemon packages were hung on metal hooks at the end of the aisle, and he quickly scanned the ones hanging in the front to no avail. Then he began going through each row hung one in front of the other on each hook. Again, no Golum or Geodude. I stepped in to help him in his quest and I honestly looked through every single row of packages, pulling one forward to see the one behind and, yet, I couldn't find these particular Pokemon either.

Just when I was explaining that we would have to wait until the next week after a new shipment would come in, something incredible happened!

I had my hand on a package that was hanging mid-level in the very front of it's row, when suddenly right before my eyes, another package appeared right behind this and six inches lower. It wasn't on a hook, nor could it have been on the hook prior to this since we both had carefully gone through each package and if it were simply caught between two it certainly would have fallen down long before this.

Because it was not on a hook, it simply appeared and then dropped heading toward the floor when my son instinctively reached out to catch it in his hands. And, there it was: Golum and Geodude! The very pack he had wanted all week. The very pack that didn't exist in that place just moments before!

I was stunned. Mainly since I actually saw the moment this coveted item appeared in our time and space! But, Gabriel, while quite pleased to be holding the thing he'd been longing for all week, seemed fairly nonplused by it's sudden appearance.

I asked him excitedly, "Did you see that?" and he responded with utter lack of shock, "Sometimes things just appear."

Oh, I thought. Leave it to an eight-year-old to understand and remind me that, yes, sometimes things DO just appear.
