The degenerate’s guide to college football TV watch ‘em ups, 2019 season, week 5
Tumblr media
I just spent an awfully long time looking for a specific thing to steal as a header image only to give up and use a basically unrelated picture.
Hi, are you ready for some college football? Are all of your rowdy friends coming over? No? Mine, either. We’re in this alone and in the dark, lordt willin. Let’s get drunk and gamble and pretend life is just this. I’ve got 20 or so hours to kill, a TV, and a cable subscription with internet access.
There are times and places and football teams. These things intersect at appointed schedules as listed below. The times are eastern and the football teams are pre-determined. All of the scheduling information is pilfered from FBSchedules. Yell at them if anything is wrong. The odds are determined by bookmakers, many of whom are based in my fair city of Las Vegas, NV. NV is pronounced Nuh-vadd-duh. The duh stands for stupid. I get mine odds given to me for free at Vegas Insider. What you do with this information is entirely up to you, friend.

Matchup                                                       Time (ET)                TV/Mobile
NIU at Vanderbilt                                          12:00pm                   SECN
Remember that kid from Western Kentucky saying “they supposed to be SEC!” on the sideline? That was seven years ago this week. He wasn’t saying that about Vanderbilt. Nobody has ever said that about Vanderbilt, even though they have been in the conference since its inception.
Buffalo at Miami (Ohio)                                12:00pm                  ESPNU
The line has completely flipped on this game. I’m not sure what happened and I refuse to do any research to find out just know that betting on Miami OH is apparently an awful idea.
BYU at Toledo                                               12:00pm                   ESPN+
In my memory BYU’s uniforms are always a lighter shade of blue than any photographs will ever support. I know I’m not alone in this weird trick of the mind. That’s all I’ve got to say for this game. It could be interesting to watch.
Central Michigan at Western Michigan      12:00pm                  CBSSN
CBS Sports is the official station of degenerate watchin’ up of football and it is a moral travesty that it is sullied with MACtion.
Holy Cross at Syracuse                               12:00pm                  ACCN
Huge matchup between the Ringer and ESPN. I find any positive notice for either of these schools to be most distasteful.
Kansas at TCU                                              12:00pm                   FS1
I think I’d probably rather watch Gary Patterson and Les Miles yell at each other for 3 hours than watch this game but that isn’t really a disparagement of the entertainment value contained herein. I can’t bring myself yet to publicly espouse my thoughts on this game but they are historically significant in a sense. No, I don’t expect Kansas to win but that’s not as far from what I think will happen as I’m comfortable with.
Middle Tennessee at 14 Iowa                       12:00pm                 ESPN2
Life is never easy for the middle Tennessee. You have the older Tennessees (mostly) acting exactly like your parents and you have the younger rebellious Tennessees acting out and forging their own paths, sucking up all the attention. A good way to be noteworthy would be a big road upset! But that’s not going to happen. Beat the spread (-23.5) and at least the gamblers will remember you fondly.
Northwestern at 8 Wisconsin                        12:00pm                   ABC
I don’t know exactly why I’ve always hated Northwestern but I hope Jonathan Taylor runs for 500 yards and 10 TDs today. Pound the over.
Rutgers at 20 Michigan                                   12:00pm                  BTN
Often lost in all the talk of Michigan being overrated and Jim Harbaugh being a shitty recruiter is the fact that Michigan has never really been much better than they are right now on a consistent basis and they’ll stay at this level until a superstar QB signs there and makes the then OC look like a genius. That’s how things work now for all but the very top of the top programs. Having said all that, the line is moving towards Rutgers and that should never happen. Wolverines by 30.
23 Texas A&M vs. Arkansas (in Arlington, TX)   12:00pm           ESPN
aTm isn’t great but Arkansas is deep in the trash can right now. This is a sad and hollow SWC rivalry revival. Is it worth gambling on Arkansas to make the Jimbo 10-year guaranteed contract continue to look bad? No, it is not. Aggie by 50.
Texas Tech at 6 Oklahoma                                  12:00pm           FOX
I am easily swept up in hype, especially on offense, but I have this creeping idea that Oklahoma is the second best team in the country this year. And I’m not looking at the line or anything when I say this but take the Sooners and the points this week and every week until the playoffs.
Delaware at Pitt                                                    12:30pm            RSN
The loser of this game gets the Joe Flacco statue. It’s just Joe Flacco. He did end his college career at Delaware so it’s fitting that they’ll be stuck with him for all eternity.
Mississippi at 2 Alabama                                     3:30pm             CBS
There was an implication left open in the Oklahoma writeup. It’s applicable to this game. Still, don’t bet on Alabama games. Nick Saban hates you as much as his buddy Bill Belichick hates you. So the final here? 38-14. Bama won’t score for the last 24 minutes.
18 Virginia at 10 Notre Dame                               3:30pm             NBC
Tumblr media
This marks the second week in a row that Notre Dame will play their third football match against a team from a school with claims as America’s first “public” university. I have an exceptionally bad feeling about this one for the Hoos. At least Bryce Hall one-on-one against Chase Claypool is interesting from a scouting perspective.
Wake Forest at Boston College                           3:30pm              ACCN
ACC acction, it’s just like football!
Iowa State at Baylor                                              3:30pm              ESPN
Baylor has been a secret weapon for gamblers so far this year but the line on this one has flipped and now Iowa State is a road favorite. I go mostly off gut here and I’m not going out of my way for a Big XII game that doesn’t involve Oklahoma but my feeling so far is that Baylor is a top 25 team that voters are too embarrassed to vote for. Maybe Iowa State did some really hard training this week and it’s expected to pay off.
Coastal Carolina at Appalachian State               3:30pm              ESPN+
I don’t think I’ll actually seek this out on ESPN+ but there are two things about this game that interest me, Darrynton Evans and these glorious helmets that App State will be wearing (that twitter thread is worth reading if you like this stupid sort of thing):
Tumblr media
Minnesota at Purdue                                             3:30pm             ESPN2
The nation’s consensus worst undefeated team is a road underdog against the one-man band that is Purdue football. I’m inclined to say bet Gophers (?) at +1.5. Sorry in advance.
21 USC at 17 Washington                                     3:30pm               FOX
The last time these old conference foes (since 1923, in the Pac precursor the Pacific Coast Conference) was 2016 when USC wrecked a perfect season for UDub and exposed Jake Browning as not particularly good. Washington still went to the playoffs but Jake Browning never fooled anybody again. What does this have to do with this game here, today? Glad you asked. Absolutely nothing.
Indiana at 25 Michigan State                                 3:30pm              BTN
I hear this is the game of the week in Guantanamo.
Florida Atlantic at Charlotte                                   3:30pm            NFLN
Something about this game just makes me laugh. Like it’s a joke. It’s a clown here to amuse me.
1 Clemson at North Carolina                                  3:30pm             ABC
Carolina got up for this one by losing to App State. Clemson is favored by 27 on the road which just a little high considering that Trevor Lawrence may have befriended Jameis Winston’s bookie in the offseason.
Akron at UMass                                                        3:30pm        FloSports
Fuck this game.
Georgia Tech at Temple                                           3:30pm         CBSSN
Georgia Tech may have to rebuild their roster entirely after a decade+ of Paul Johnson option ball but at least they’ve also already forgotten how the option works. Future Miami head coach Rod Carey has the Owls poised for another bowl loss and his 2-1 team is favored by 8.5.
SMU at USF                                                               4:00pm         ESPNU
I don’t know what the people of Austin did to Charlie Strong but it hurts my heart. SMU didn’t even get a top 25 ranking for beating TCU last week but if they beat the spread this week they’ll be 5-0 and (probably) ranked for the first time since... when, 1986?
Towson at 9 Florida                                                   4:00pm          SECN
Florida is a talented team overall but their QB situation is pretty dire. Towson is the best team they’ve played in weeks but I’d still feel pretty good taking the Gators -36.5.
Cincinnati at Marshall                                                5:00pm        Facebook
The winner of this game will go mostly unnoticed. Marshall is a slight underdog at home and off the top of my head that seems like good value.
Louisiana at Georgia Southern                                 6:00pm        ESPN+
Ragin Cajuns and Southern Eagles - this game belongs on CBS Sports. This is trash but it’s beautiful trash.
New Mexico at Liberty                                                6:00pm        ESPN+
RTARLsman alert! Antonio Gandy-Golden plays for Liberty for some reason and he’s easy to spot in games like this. He’s huge and tends to make highlight reel catches even when he doesn’t need to. In 4 games he has 24 catches for 544 yards. That’s stupid and a pace that should continue for the rest of the season.
Arkansas State at Troy                                               6:00pm        ESPN+
I hate that all of this great Sun Belt inanity is hidden behind a paywall.
East Carolina at Old Dominion                                  6:00pm        ESPN+
ODU is in a perfect position to completely crumble after failing to take down either Virginia Tech or Virginia when they had a chance. ECU started as a slight favorite and now they’re +3 but that’s just homefield advantage. So these teams are even. Roll damn Pirates.
24 Kansas State at Oklahoma State                          7:00pm        ESPN+
Kansas State has SMU’s rightful ranking. Chuba Hubbard mostly sucked against Texas but the man still worked him senseless with 37 carries. I wouldn’t bet on either team but under 60.5 seems reasonable.
Louisiana Tech at Rice                                                7:00pm        ESPN3
The Mailmen -9 seems like theft to me but I am openly bad at this.
Mississippi State at 7 Auburn                                     7:00pm        ESPN
I’m not sure the Barners are ready to drop a seemingly easy win but one must be ever mindful of the possibility. If not now, when?
Nicholls at Texas State                                                 7:00pm       ESPN+
With no bookmaking numbers to draw from I really couldn’t begin to tell you what’s happening here.
Stanford at Oregon State                                              7:00pm     Pac-12N
Stanford and the under. This conference could use a big shot of boredom.
UAB at WKU                                                                    7:00pm      ESPN+
UAB is going 12-0 without ever getting a top 25 ranking.
UConn at 22 UCF                                                            7:00pm      ESPN2
The Civil ConFLiCT! UCF is a 43-point favorite and, honestly, that’s too low. The trophy will go in the trash again.
UTEP at Southern Miss                                                  7:00pm       ESPN+
In the days before there were 100 D-1A teams this would have been a nice little off-the-radar kind of game. It’s pretty bad now, though.
South Alabama at ULM                                                  7:00pm        ESPN+
ULM is a 15.5-point favorite. Holy shit, USA must be putrid.
5 Ohio State at Nebraska                                               7:30pm         ABC
Nebraska seems light years away from competing in the B1G and they don’t really look any better to me now than they did last year or the year before but they are 3-1 so I must be missing something. I thought Ohio State would slip a little post-Urban but so far they’re the statistically best team in the country.
Colorado State at Utah State                                        7:30pm       CBSSN
A true beauty. USU has been scoring 40ppg but Jordan Love hasn’t had a big stat padding game yet. That should change here as Colorado State is pretty bad. Stay away from the line but over 70.5 is definitely in play.
Kentucky at South Carolina                                          7:30pm        SECN
This slate of primetime games is a great excuse to get some chores out of the way. Call your parents. Talk to your wife. Pick out a nice Christmas gift for your bookie. You won’t be missing anything worthwhile. This isn’t even the worst of it.
NC State at Florida State                                                7:30pm        ACCN
I can’t confidently say this isn’t the worst of it. FSU is rounding into shape for quite the painful showdown with Miami in five weeks. That game is going to be a sad reminder of what once was. This game is just painful for the sake of being painful. ACC action, I can’t believe it’s not cancelled!
Houston at North Texas                                                  8:00pm      Facebook
If you watch this one up, keep in mind that you could be watching along with the next Edward Snowden. Who’s watching you. So don’t be too libertarian with your browsers.
Fresno State at New Mexico State                                8:00pm       FloSports
I don’t know what FloSports is but it sounds like it has to do with Florida. Maybe they got confused when they saw Fresno State listed as FSU or something and it’s too late to change it now.
UNLV at Wyoming                                                         8:00pm           ESPNU
Take Wyoming on everything. UNLV is a horrible team and nobody looks good on the road in Laramie. Wyoming is no great shakes but they’re at least 10 points better than UNLoVed.
Washington State at 19 Utah                                    10:00pm             FS1
Everything else can be trash, the Pac-12 After Dark is good this week.
Hawaii at Nevada                                                      10:30pm          ESPN2
MWC After Dark isn’t a thing but this definitely fits in the same genre as the games listed above and below it.
UCLA at Arizona                                                       10:30pm            ESPN
UCLA came back from 32 down to win a game 67-63 in regulation against a ranked opponent last week, I missed every second of it, and there is absolutely no feeling whatsoever that the program has turned any sort of corner. Well, somebody has to win this one and here’s to hoping the combined store goes over 100 again.

Resto and Custom Muscle From the 2019 Detroit Autorama
A Sure Cure for the Late Winter Blues
For many, the Detroit Autorama is first and foremost about the Ridler Award, which is viewed as the most coveted trophy for custom-car builders. The award was created in 1964 in memory of Don Ridler, who had been commissioned by the show’s organizers to make the Detroit Autorama the greatest automotive extravaganza in the world. The success Ridler enjoyed prior to his untimely death at just 54 years of age prompted the creation of the Don Ridler Memorial Award.
One of the wildest cars in the building, and one of the Great 8 contenders for the Ridler Award, was Sonny Freeman’s 1965 Chevelle named Reflection. Built at Mike Goldman Customs, the Chevelle had such body modifications as a 1967 Chevelle roof, extended rocker panels, machined door handles, lowered wheel openings, a custom billet grille, and lengthened 1967 Chevelle SS hood bulges with custom machined vents. Power comes from an LS7 engine with a Bowler Tremec T56 transmission.
Each year, eight cars are selected to be in the running for the Ridler Award prior to the public opening of the show. The Great 8 are displayed at the main entry doors to Detroit’s Cobo Hall. The entire weekend is abuzz with debate as to which car deserves the Ridler. It was of little surprise when the late Steve Barton’s spectacular Cadillac/Nomad mashup, Cadmad, was declared the Ridler Award winner for 2019.
Harold and Pat Ehlert are the original and current owners of this 1970 Plymouth Superbird. The Limelight wing car was parked in 1973 and restored by Nathan and Paris Ehlert in 2016. A 440ci four-barrel engine rated at 375 hp sends power through a four-speed manual transmission.
Muscle cars have a presence at the Detroit Autorama, but they are not the main attraction. That said, there are enough of our 1960-1974-era muscle cars on display to warrant making the trip to Detroit. The 1970 Monte Carlo SS owned by John and Connie Fifer was remarkable, as was the 1965 Tri-power, four-speed GTO that belonged to Scott Tiemann’s parents, which was looking assembly-line fresh following its restoration. There was a number of original, unrestored muscle cars on hand, including a 4,495-mile unrestored 1969 Z/28. Check out some of the other muscle cars and a few of the wild hot rods that were at the 2019 Detroit Autorama.
The big-block A-body Mopars have been tearing up the dragstrips for decades. Darin Gehr restored his 383-powered four-speed 1968 Dodge Dart GTS to perfection. Paint work was handled by Pat O’Connor.
One of the most incredible restored muscle cars at the Detroit Autorama was John and Connie Fifer’s 1970 Monte Carlo SS. The drivetrain consists of the 360hp, 454ci LS5 engine; M40 Turbo 400 three-speed automatic transmission; and 12 bolt 2.56-geared differential. The Fifer’s Monte Carlo was researched and restored to make sure all numbers and date codes are matching and correct. Every bolt, nut, clip, and clamp was cleaned and replated. All factory chalk marks and paint code markings were accurately reproduced.
Charlie Pate owns this restored 1970 Chevelle SS. The LS5 454/360hp engine, M21 four-speed transmission, and 12-bolt 3.31 Positraction rear provide the ultimate muscle car driving experience. The Cranberry Red SS454 has only travelled 34,482 actual miles and is well equipped with Cowl Induction hood, air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, SS five-spoke wheels, bucket seats and console, gauge package, AM/FM radio, and power windows.
Scott Tiemann’s parents, Jerry and Carolyn, purchased their Fountain Blue 1965 GTO at Royal Pontiac on May 21, 1965. The car is absolutely loaded, with options that include the Rally gauge package, wood steering wheel, padded dash, power windows, power steering, mirror group, lamp group, console, AM radio with rear speaker, and rear window defogger. The GTO’s Tri-power 389 is joined to a M20 four-speed transmission and 3.55 Safe-T-Track axle. Scott handled the entire restoration at his shop, Supercar Specialties in Portland, Michigan. Fantastic provenance, history, and restoration make this car a standout, and easily the one car I would have loved to drive home from Autorama.
The 1968 Hurst/Olds owned by James Kryta is one of 515 produced. The Peruvian Silver H/O is powered by a 455ci engine that produced a factory-rated 390 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. A Turbo 400 transmission and 3.90-geared differential finish off the powertrain. Paint and bodywork were performed by Nyle Wing at Wings Auto Art. Scott Tiemann handled the restoration detail and assembly. Chrome work was from A&W Chrome.
Fritz Helmuth owns this one-of-100 1970 Trans Am Javelin, which was restored by Lavine Restorations in Nappanee, Indiana. The 390ci engine is restored to absolutely new condition. A ram-air hood provides fresh air induction for increased horsepower. A BorgWarner T10 four-speed transmission and 3.91 Twin Grip AMC 20 differential combine for spirited acceleration. Dealer-installed Sidewinder pipes and an eight-track radio were hot items in 1970.
For 1970, AMC built 4,116 AMXs. Joe Papelian owns this Golden Lime example, one of 1,632 built with the 390 Go Pack. The AMX features a Ram Air hood, a four-speed T10V BorgWarner close-ratio transmission, a 3.54 Twin Grip rear, and leather seats. Rob Eppler and Willie Shaw performed the mechanical restoration of this outstanding AMX.
Diversified Creations brought out this red 1970 AMX modified with an AMC 401 engine with a 3/4 racing camshaft and a high-rise intake manifold. Also onboard are a 700R4 GM four-speed automatic transmission and a Vintage Air A/C system. Smart updates make for a great-driving AMC with plenty of visual pop.
Mark Bonnet doesn’t mind the manual steering and manual brakes found in his 1964 Dodge 440. The 426ci Wedge engine and 727 TorqueFlite transmission make a perfect combination for street/strip speed and reliability. This Mopar was built at Geno’s Custom Paint and Moe’s Body and Paint.
The Cream, a 1966 Dodge Hemi Charger, is owned by Mark Kersher. It was restored by PSI in Sterling, Michigan, with a numbers-matching 426 Hemi engine built by Ted Spehar. The car originated from the Chrysler Lynch Road Assembly plant.
The 1966 Dodge Charger owned by Mark Lavelle is powered by a 383 V-8. The GG1 Dark Green Poly Charger was restored in loving memory of John Quinn at After Hours Restorations LLC. A 727 TorqueFlite three-speed automatic and a 3.23-geared 8 3/4 rear were the bread-and-butter combination in 1966.
Black Betty, a 1967 Chevelle SS396 owned by John and Felisha Marecki, was looking strong in day-two attire. The engine is a modified 396/402 big-block with LS5 heads and a Holley 770 Street Avenger carburetor. John thanks John Marecki Sr.; Alex Baydoun and David Garnett of Alex & Dave’s Auto Repair; Nick Lutomski; and Matt Brabeau.
It’s all about stance. Debra Borsos’ 1967 RS/SS Camaro had plenty of it with the vintage American Racing 200S wheels and BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. The Camaro was looking ready for comfortable cruising with its rare fold-down center armrest and column shifter.
This unrestored original 1969 Z/28 Camaro has 4,495 original miles on its DZ302 engine. Diversified Creations had the car on display. An original 2×4 cross-ram manifold was found in the trunk.
This unrestored original Wimbledon White 1969 Ford Fairlane Cobra only has 33,000 original miles. It is equipped with the 428 four-barrel engine, four-speed Top Loader transmission, and bucket seats. The rare Cobra was purchased at Dils Motor Company in Parkersburg, West Virginia.
The Ford guys were happy to see Kevin Shelton’s restored 1970 Super Cobra Jet Mach 1. The Shaker hood and Magnum wheels looked great. The highly detailed engine compartment was sporting all the right stickers, details, and factory markings.
Cadmad, a custom 1959 Cadillac, was the 2019 Don Ridler Memorial Award winner. The stunning two-door Nomad-style wagon is powered by a twin-turbo 632-inch big-block Chevy built by Nelson Racing Engines. Jordan Quintal Sr. and his crew at Super Rides by Jordan in Escondido, California, built the car. Owner Steve Barton passed away prior to the completion of Cadmad, but his brother, Craig, displayed the finished car in his memory.
Another Great 8 winner was ZL69, a customized 1969 Camaro owned by Pat and Debbie Moran. The original taillights were replaced with 2012 Camaro taillights in reverse position. A Camaro SS roof was grafted on and chopped 1 inch at the A-pillar. A 6.2L LSA supercharged engine rests comfortably in the Schwartz Industry G Machine chassis featuring rack-and-pinion steering, Ride Tech adjustable coilover shocks, and Baer Brakes.
Brace yourselves, muscle car buddies! This is a real A12 liftoff-hood 440 Six Pack car. But when it was found, it was a cut-up and butchered drag car with the original drivetrain long gone. For that reason, owner Brian Storm decided to build a killer Hot Wheels–style 1969 Super Bee. He had legendary chassis builder Jim Homier of Speed & Custom in Woodstock, Georgia, build the car, with help from Noah Storm. Beautiful paint and bodywork were done by Newberry Bodyshop. A 572ci aluminum Indy Wedge powers the radical Mopar. Gargantuan Budnik wheels complete the radical Hot Wheels theme.
The Doctor’s Orders 1965 Dodge Coronet Hemi two-door sedan is owned by John and Kim Barich. They started with a one-owner Florida car with factory tinted glass and heater delete. The rear springs were relocated, and subframe connectors were installed. Bodywork and paint were handled by PSI Automotive in Sterling Heights, Michigan, while the Hemi was built by Automotive Machine in Fraser, Michigan. The engine features an original 1965 magnesium cross-ram intake, Holley carburetors, Stage V aluminum heads, and TTI long-tube headers.
The Shadowoods Auto Center 1968 SS/A Hemi Barracuda is owned by the Tignanelli Brothers, Jim and Tom. Both brothers have shared driving and wrenching duties. Tom was a Chrysler engineer who helped catapult Chrysler drag racing into the spotlight in the 1960s and 1970s.
Since Chrysler built only 83 LO23 Hemi Darts for 1968, Jerry Helfman decided to build his own Hemi Dart clone car called Red Beauty. The 580hp 426 Hemi features aluminum heads, cross-ram intake, and two 770 Holley carburetors. A Passon Performance A833 four-speed transmission with Hurst shifter sends big torque to a Dana 60 4.10 rear. Special features include a lightweight front end and doors, Lexan windows, A100 seats, and original-style steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps. Helfman thanks Brian Dickey from Motor City Solutions for his help with the construction of the Rolls Royce Tudor Red Hemi Dart.
Gorgeous EW1 white paint and V1W white vinyl top set off this 1970 Challenger R/T, equipped with a 440 Six Pack, a Shaker hood, and a four-speed. According to the owner, the Track Pack with Dana 3.54 rear, R/T stripe, and other options make this E-body a “one of one known to exist.”

""Car Insurance, Borrowing a friends car?""
So a friend of mine is letting me borrow his car for three months. now the problem is insurance. We dont know what to do. He has full coverage insurance with statefarm but said that he cant simply add my name to the insurance because if i get into an accident and get sued, his parents (who the car is registered too) will have to pay for the liability. what i'm confused about is if he has full coverage, and my name is under their insurance, wouldnt the insurance company pay for it and not his parents? His suggestion says that the only way i can borrow the car and cover all liability and contingencies is if he transfers (or 'sells') the car to my mom, so the car can be registered under MY parents name rather than his, so in the case of being sued, my parents would have to pay for the damages. what to do!?!? Medical Insurance too expensive?
Currently I am paying $514.03, every WEEK to cover my family of four. Our employers do NOT cover a huge chunk of the costs. I am completely ignorant to this new Obamacare, but I am also starting to learn about it. The only thing I seen happen with Obamacare is yes my insurance got better and stronger (Open Network), but it also increased over $200 a week. I am not kidding it is about $2,064.00 a month. I can't afford to go to the Doctor and pay the Co-Pays because of my weekly payment!!!! It almost seems better for my husband to lose his job and we can collect welfare/medicaid! What is out there for us? Please don't tell me to shop around because I have and its very expensive. I can save $50 and some even increased over $100. Nothing in our medical history to cause expensive insurance either. What does Obamacare do for this situation? Who can I call to get some help?""

Any 17 year olds just got car insurance? (UK)?
Hi, I was wondering if anybody aged 17 has got car insurance recently and would be able to tell me how much they paid. I've been told 3k-4k but when I look on the internet most people are saying 800-2k even if you haven't just got insurance which of the two price ranges is more likely for me? My car insurance is due to run out on the 28th of this month, i have looked at quotes and have found a really good one expect it expires in the 21st, is it possible to set this car insurance up to start on the 21st even though my policy hasn't expired yet. Im only asking because its with a different company and i wasn't sure if you could still insure a car whilst its ensured already. If i loose this quote im going to end up paying 200-300 more. I hope this all makes sense, thank you.""

Insurance not paying a claim!?
Boy this is a good one & I don't know what to do Next! I went with the Lizard insurance even though they are Snakes and don't want to pay for any Claims! It started in 2010 with my truck, I took it to where they told me and they only paid for cosmetic damage even though there was a lot more including my steering was so bad I had to stop driving it. I wanted to take it to a shop that I had my truck lowered which because of we're I lived and the shop was I couldn't drive it, 65 miles. I had AAA tow it to my new house and from there after 2 years of not driving my truck they agreed to have it towed 7 miles to the shop. Well I told the claims adjuster what was wrong, he told me I needed to write a list and drop it off at the shop so I just got my Chopper back from the shop and went down to where my truck was a wrote a list of what I thought was wrong. Here is where the first of my troubles started, on the way home I am riding on the freeway and a truck to the right of me had a blow out and a Giant tire flew right in front of me, I couldn't do anything other than to run it over. It happened so fast, I hit it and made a brown spot in my shorts, jk. I then noticed smoke coming from my Chopper, it was Bad so I pulled over and noticed that my tail light was knocked off and caused some damage and the bold that holds my tail light on came off and rubbed on my new Avon 250 tire and Melted the side wall. I was able to ride home and once I saw all the damage I knew it was a problem. I called the Lizard and made a claim. The claims adjuster called me and said he will be out that Saturday, so saturday came and I never heard from him, I had his number and left a message, so this went on until Thursday and I called the lizard again and they transferred me to the AH boss and I left him a voicemail. Well I didn't hear from him as a few more days went by so Called back and got his boss's boss. The next day I got a nasty voicemail from the claims adjuster bitching at me. I called customer service and told them he went off on me and they can hear my voicemail too but no one listened to me. So I was told to call his boss, I said then I don't want this claims adjuster to come out, I don't want to speak to him or have anything to do with him. They were so sorry and said they totally understand and later that day the big boss called and I told him I hadn't heard from the adjuster other than a nasty voicemail and I want someone else to come out and not him. The boss said I understand and he will take care of it. So two days later the rude claims adjuster showed up at my house to take care of the claim, I was shocked it was the AHole I didn't want to come out but his bosses boss told him he better get out there and take care of this. Well once he was there, he wasn't as nice as he had been and couldn't be more rude than he was. I told him what had happened and the Damage, all he said was Prove it, Prove it, Over and over with everything I showed him. It caused major damage to my shocks and front forks, he laughed and said they are designed to roll over things and that it couldn't happen from hitting a tire in the road, well it can because that's exactly what happened. He was such a AHole I said, why did you even come out, did you just come here to be a @ss Hole or what!! He didn't say a word and just left. They paid out just a little for damages to the paint, tail light and the tire. The tired was new and cost 500 but they paid me 100 bucks for it. Mean while my truck is at the shop still to get looked over for the damage and they didn't pay a dime and the worst part was when I got the truck back from being towed, I started after the tow truck drive let it down and it sounded funny, then I smelt burning plastic so I opened the hood and my entire air intake system was gone!!! The burning was th vacuum hoses laying on the headers. I called the shop where my truck was and they said they are not sure what's going on but to call back. Well they are no longer in business and I lost all that so I called and opened a claim, now they are investigating me over this. So I have damage from 2010 that has never been fixed, my bike isn't right and someone had stolen my Volant cold air intake that's not being taken care of. What do I do? This is BS, I don't deserve this from my insurance Company and for them to treat me like they have, not pay out the claims. I needed my truck smoged Dec 31st so because all the parts to have it smogged weren't there I couldn't have it down and I have a ton of late fees with the DMV in California. My Volant is smog legal, I have the Ca numbers for it but it doesn't matter, I am getting the run around like no tomorrow. I will Drop GIECO and go with Farmers but not until my truck and bike are fixed. I have called everyone I could at Geico and no help!""

Can anyone help me regarding a huge fine for driving without insurance.?

Motorcycle insurance estimate after DWI?

What sensible action can be taken to overrule discriminate car insurance rates based on age and gender?
It is and should be well known that all, or almost all, car insurance companies have outrageously higher rates for male drivers and elderly drivers. Naturally these are based upon statistics that are likely agreeable enough, but it is still highly unjust to charge more simply because a driver is a certain gender or age. Alone this is not inherently a problem, however, the government now mandates the acquirement of insurance, which changes (or should change) the business's status from that of being privately owned. Point being, if you MUST have it, then the rate must be based on the sole individual owenership of the insurance, e.g. driving experience, amount of accidents, car safety rating, etc. The same bias would be exacted in saying that African American people are more likely to have an accident than Caucasion people, but that would have a 0% chance of standing in any public eye or court of law. This action might be legal, but it is inarguably injust and should not be legal under any circumstance. Discrimination is rampant enough throughout society, and certainly should not be introduced into the corporate or political world. Unfortunately this question is leaning on the brink of a rant, which is prohibited by the guidelines, so it shall be continued only for a short while. The basic question is simple. When will something be done about it, who will do it, and how will they do it. I would undoubtedly challenge its legality myself, and still might in days to come, but unfortunately my age does not coexist well with my ambition, aptitude, or will. So it would be preferable for some other courageous folk to challenge it themselves, which raises the obvious question: How?""

Why do hundreds of thousands die every year WITH health insurance?
Should we ban it? Isn't this the same argument as Dems use when they say 45,000 die with no health insurance? It's not because. In fact, there was a study done. Here are the results: The possibility that no one risks death by going without health insurance may be startling, but some research supports it. Richard Kronick of the University of California at San Diegos Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, an adviser to the Clinton administration, recently published the results of what may be the largest and most comprehensive analysis yet done of the effect of insurance on mortality. He used a sample of more than 600,000, and controlled not only for the standard factors, but for how long the subjects went without insurance, whether their disease was particularly amenable to early intervention, and even whether they lived in a mobile home. In test after test, he found no significantly elevated risk of death among the uninsured. See that? No elevated risk of death among the uninsured? Do some of you get that you're being played yet? I'd love to see reform, but should we concentrate on the common sense Republican solutions to bring down costs?""

Will my son be turned down for insurance?
I have an autistic son, and I have decided he needs better hospital insurance than what he has (I have regular health insurance, but his hospital coverage is not great). So I applied for extra hospital insurance. Aside from being pretty severely autistic, he's physically a pretty healthy kid, no major problems, no ongoing treatment. However, recently he needed to have a dental procedure, and they decided it was best that it be done in the hospital, and that he be fully knocked out. A few years back, he also needed to be knocked out for an MRI (he had a seizure, but none since). Anesthesia is expensive, and when he had the dental procedure, it maxed out the hospital coverage on my current plan and I got stuck with a $9000 bill. Hence, the decision for better hospital insurance. When applying for health insurance, they do 5 year medical records check, and those two things are going to come up. What's going to happen... Will I have higher premiums? will they refuse to cover anything they deem is caused by his autism? Or will they flat out reject him? Or will it not be a problem?""

What health insurance can I get as a low income american college student?
Hello, I am a nineteen community college student living in North San Diego, California and I live with my parents. I make less that $1,000 a month working part time and going to school full-time. I get financial aid from my school, but only for the classes, not the books. My father, the only other worker in my family, makes roughly around $32,000 a year. We barely make the rent each month and barely have enough for gas. About when I was sixteen, I was diagnosed with Gallstones and was urged to better my choice of eating. Of course as a Mexican-American, I wasnt about to give up my Carne Asada or burgers so I continued my vices which led to various, and very painful gallstones attacks over the past couple of years. Now I am no longer able to eat anything without feeling sick to my stomach. I was cut out on all junk food and have pinned myself to a grilled/boiled chicken only and greens diet. I don;t eat any red meat and make sure to have fresh made fruit/vegetables smoothies. Yet, for the past four days, Like i said i haven;t been able to pass anything. I am currenly runng every morning. My father thinks I have an ulcer. So, straight to the point, I am a low-income college student with no money left over at the end of each month and I need to go to the doctor's immediately. I am an american citizen but have no health insurance at the moment. I need surgery to remove the gallstones, but first have to go an have a checkup. Alabama vs. Vanderbilt adds to Vandy’s extremely short history of CBS games
It’s short and sweet. But there may be more if the ‘Dores can pull off the upset of Alabama.
Depending on where you live in the South, 2:30 or 3:30 p.m. on a Saturday in the fall means one thing. This music’s going to play ...
youtube
... and the SEC on CBS will be back on your TV.
If you’re a Vanderbilt fan, you haven’t been a staple on the league’s marquee game.
Week 4’s matchup against Alabama will be Vandy’s sixth CBS game since 1998, when the series began. In 2014, the fine folks at AL.com put together a comprehensive list of regular season appearances by teams on the network’s SEC game of the week.
To put things in relative terms: Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, and Georgia have each played on CBS over 50 times, and that’s even with a cap of four games per year per team. Texas A&M and Missouri have each appeared on the network in the regular season more times than the ‘Dores, even though both joined the league in 2012.
While the history is short, let’s look at the times Vandy’s been on the SEC’s grandest weekly stage.
Nov. 6, 1999: Vanderbilt at Florida.
The Gators weren’t great, and they’d lose three straight to end the season, but at the time, Florida was a one-point loss to Alabama in overtime away from being undefeated. No. 5 Florida played host to Vandy and found itself in a dogfight. With just over a minute left, Vanderbilt took over from its own 16-yard line, trailing by a touchdown. The Commodores would drive to Florida’s red zone, but fail on a fourth down conversion and fall, 13-6.
Nov. 27, 1999: Vanderbilt at Tennessee.
Vanderbilt would be back just three weeks later, but this was a day to feature Tennessee. The Vols were defending national champions, and it was legendary quarterback Tee Martin’s senior day. The Commodores had not won in Knoxville since 1975, and were fighting for bowl eligibility. They wouldn’t get it in a 38-10 drubbing.
youtube
Nov. 24, 2001: Vanderbilt at Tennessee.
Tennessee receiver Donte Stallworth broke the game open in the second quarter with a punt return for a TD. The Vols rolled, 38-0, and had their first shutout since 1998. Tennessee would notch season highs for sacks and interceptions. The Commodores would finish 2-9.
Oct. 19, 2013: Georgia at Vanderbilt.
After 12 years off the network, not only were the ‘Dores back on CBS, they were hosting. But they weren’t doing it at 3:30 ET. Instead, the game was played at noon ET, as one of CBS’ two contractually obligated double-header Saturdays.
This was not your parents’ Vanderbilt, however. They were in the midst of a second consecutive 9-4 season in James Franklin’s third year.
Vandy had sputtered to that point and was 3-3, winless inside the SEC. Jerron Seymour’s late go-ahead touchdown was the difference, and the Commodores won 31-27.
youtube
It was Vanderbilt’s first win over a ranked opponent since 2008 and a monkey off the back for Franklin, who was without a signature victory. After the game, Franklin preached business as usual.
youtube
But while he fought back tears at his postgame press conference, you could tell it was a huge win.
youtube
Sept. 12, 2015: Georgia at Vanderbilt.
The most recent time Vanderbilt hosted the SEC on CBS, things didn’t go so well. The Dawgs put it on Vandy, 31-14.
Saturday will be unlike any challenge the ‘Dores have faced recently.
For starters, Alabama and Vanderbilt rarely play these days. They’ve only met twice in the Nick Saban era. But the ‘Dores are riding high after stifling Kansas State last week.
In an increasingly confusing SEC East (3-0 Kentucky! Bad Florida offense! Bad Tennessee defense!), the Commodores are as much a favorite for the division as just about anyone else is, excluding Missouri. After quietly finishing 6-7 last season, Vandy is 3-0 and now noticeably good again, especially on defense. Entering Saturday night, K-State averaged 8.36 yards per play against FCS Central Arkansas and Charlotte. Vandy’s defense almost cut that in half (4.4).
After the win, Vandy fans chanted “We want Bama.” Well, y’all got ‘em. And ya got ‘em on CBS, too.

Nick Fitzgerald leads a rebuilding MSU offense. (AP Photo, Jim Lytle)
War Eagle, everybody! It’s time now for another Auburn football preview! On September 30th, Auburn will host the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Last season’s game against the Bulldogs was expected to be a struggle, in Starkville. Instead, Auburn ripped into home-standing MSU and tore out to a 35-0 halftime lead. Auburn coasted to a 38-14 victory. The Bulldogs suffered through a rebuilding year last year, and hope to be a little stronger earlier in the season, this year.
The Auburn Tigers will have opened the season with Georgia Southern, then traveled to Clemson. Auburn will then enjoy an early homecoming game against Mercer, before traveling to Missouri, prior to the home clash with Mississippi State. Auburn’s schedule at this point look manageable. Mississippi State’s gets difficult, pretty quickly. MSU opens with Charleston Southern, then travels to Rushton, Louisiana to take on Louisiana Tech as part of a CBS double-header. The Bulldogs then host LSU, followed by a trip to Athens, Georgia.
Last season, Mississippi State improved on offense greatly, as the year went on. Quarterback Nick Fitzgerald came out of nowhere, to lead the Bulldogs, and this year he’s being touted as an All-SEC candidate by many pundits. There are some questions, going into the offseason. A banged up offensive line and receiver corps had difficulty handling a Bulldog defense that was allowed to blitz, in the spring game. Bulldog fortunes on the offensive side will depend on how many guys return healthy this fall, and whether the younger players continue to improve.
Defense was really the biggest issue for Mississippi State last season, as they gave up 31.8 points per game, including giving up 35 to Umass, 38 to Auburn, 40 to Kentucky, 41 to Samford (!), 51 to Alabama, and 58 to Arkansas. Tackling in the secondary was sub-par, and the Bulldogs gave up 4.8 yards per rush.
This season, MSU poached defensive coordinator Todd Grantham away from Louisville. Grantham was able to improve defenses at Georgia and Louisville, by installing a complex 3-4, multiple front blitzing scheme. The only caveat is that it sometimes takes a while for the players to learn such a system. For that reason, it’s better to be playing the Bulldogs in September, than November. The defense had 5 interceptions in the Bulldog spring game, including 4 off of starter Nick Fitzgerald. A couple of the picks were returned for touchdowns.
The Bulldogs are rebuilding their special teams again this season, after losing kicker Westin Graves, and top return men Fred Ross, and Brandon Holloway. Junior Malik Dear was expected to be a major contributor this fall here, but he spent the spring game on the sideline with a knee brace on.
Auburn defensive line vs. Mississippi State offensive line: Auburn brings a big, athletic defensive line back this season. Likely starters at tackle are junior Dontavius Russell and sophomore Derrick Brown. Sophomore strong-side end Marlon Davidson was a beast on A-Day. The buck side will likely be manned by a combination of junior Jeffery Holland and senior transfer Paul James III. Auburn has a good bit of depth behind the starters, as well. Senior Martinez Rankin played center this spring, but I think Head Coach Dan Mullen would like to see the veteran slide out to left tackle this fall. My best guess, from left to right would be Rankin at tackle, junior Elgton Jenkins, junior Deion Calhoun would move over from right guard to center, sophomore Darryl Williams would move up at right guard, with redshirt freshman Greg Eiland getting the start at right tackle. The Bulldogs do have a fairly decent amount of depth on the line. The key will be getting a group to gel in September. Advantage: Auburn.
Auburn linebackers vs. Mississippi State backs: The Auburn Tigers have a good cross-trained quartet of upper echelon SEC-caliber linebackers. Junior Deshaun Davis, senior Tre’ Williams, junior Darrell Williams and junior Montravious Atkinson can play all three positions, and we might see any combination of these players out on the field at a given time. The Bulldogs are very solid at running back, with a trio of good players, led by junior Aeris Williams. Sophomore Nick Gibson and junior Dontavian Lee are also very capable. Advantage: Even.
Auburn corners vs. Mississippi State receivers: Auburn has a fairly good combination of starting corners, in junior Carlton Davis and sophomore Javaris Davis. The Tigers are hoping that Jamel Dean will be healthy this fall, as he is one of the fastest players on the team. Sophomore Jeremiah Dinson could move over from nickelback, if needed. The leading returning Bulldog receiver returning is senior Donald Gray. Senior Gabe Myles is said to have improved this spring, and sophomore Jamal Couch is a big target. Junior Malik Dear could be a factor, if he heals by September. Advantage: Auburn.
Auburn safeties vs. Mississippi State secondary receivers and quarterback: Auburn’s starting unit features seniors Tray Matthews and Stephen Roberts at safety, and sophomore Jeremiah Dinson at nickel back. There’s not much depth here, beyond senior Nick Ruffin, who’ll probably see as much playing time as the starters. The Tigers are solid here, as long as no one gets hurt. Sophomore Keith Mixon will likely get the nod at slot receiver, and the Bulldogs have several tight ends that were thrown into the fire pretty green, last season. We could see sophomore Farrod Green or senior Jordan Thomas or junior Justin Johnson at various times. Junior quarterback Nick Fitzgerald leads this offense. What’s worrisome is that coach Dan Mullen’s big armed, running quarterbacks tend to have a production jump in their second season starting. Fitzgerald threw for 2423 yards last season, and ran for 1375. He threw some bad interceptions in the spring game, but a lot of it could have been young receivers not being on the same page. Advantage: Even.
Punting: Sophomore Ian Shannon will likely get the nod as Auburn’s starting punter, after a couple of years of waiting in the wings. Shannon has looked good on A-Day a year ago, in warmups. The Tigers gave up only 19 punt return yards last season, on 6 punts, for a stifling 3.2 yards per return. The Tigers are still auditioning for the punt returner job. It’s thought that senior Stephen Roberts has the inside track, after returning 6 punts last season for 100 yards. MSU returns senior Logan Cooke at punter. Last season, Cook averaged 40.0 yards per punt. Bulldog coverage was almost as good as Auburn’s, allowing only 4.0 yards per return. The Bulldogs must replace Fred Ross as the return man, and the likely nod will go to senior Donald Gray. Advantage: Even.
Kickoffs: Daniel Carlson was very good kicking off last season, notching 57 touchbacks on 72 kickoffs. When Auburn did allow returns, opponents averaged only 18.0 yards per return. Junior Kerryon Johnson is Auburn’s most experienced return man returning, and he averaged 22.2 yards per return last season. Logan Cooke handled nearly half of the Bulldog kickoffs last season, and should handle the bulk this season. Cooke had 14 touchbacks on 25 kickoffs. MSU allowed 20.1 yards per return. The most dangerous of the return men last season was Keith Mixon, who averaged 25.2 yards per return. Advantage: Auburn.
Place kicking: Auburn sophomore Daniel Carlson is the man for Auburn. Carlson was 28 of 32 on field goals, and perfect on extra points. One of Carlson’s misses was a block by Vanderbilt. Some sources say that Mississippi State will apparently start freshman Tucker Day, right out of the gate. Others think senior Logan Cooke is more likely. Advantage: Auburn.
Auburn offensive line vs. Mississippi State defensive line: It’s still not settled who’ll start for Auburn on the line, although the starters looked pretty good on A-Day. It seems the tackle spots are set, with seniors Darius James and Braden Smith. Senior Austin Golson will likely start at center, although Auburn is bringing in senior transfer center Casey Dunn from Jax State. If Dunn starts, Golson could move to guard. Also transferring in this fall is former Florida State starting guard Wilson Bell. Bell is expected to start at one of the guard spots. If Dunn does not beat Golson out, the other likely starting guard would be sophomore Mike Horton. It will be interesting to see how the Bulldogs transition, here. Typically, Grantham likes to have a big, space-eating noseguard. Sophomore Jeffery Simmons has gained weight, and is listed at 307 pounds. That won’t be any advantage against Auburn’s front. Penciled in at end spots are sophomore Fletcher Adams, junior JUCO transfer Chauncy Rivers. MSU has depth at every position. Advantage: Auburn.
Auburn backs vs. Mississippi State linebackers: Auburn features junior H-back Chandler Cox blowing open holes. Running behind the big H-back will be massive junior Kamryn Pettway, and the shifty junior Kerryon Johnson in reserve. The Bulldog linebackers with the strength of the team last season, and could be again, if they develop within the new scheme. Inside backers should be sophomore Leo Lewis and senior Dezmond Harris. Outside should be juniors Gerri Green and Montez Sweat. Advantage: Auburn.
Auburn receivers vs. Mississippi State corners: At the end of spring, it looked like Auburn’s two starting outside guys were sophomore Nate Craig-Myers and sophomore Darius Slayton. Both guys can fly, have good height, and great hands. Redshirt freshman Marquis McClain had a great A-Day, and is someone to watch out for on the outside, as well. Throw junior Jamal Peters, redshirt freshman Cameron Dantzler, senior Lashard Durr and senior Tolando Cleveland in a bag, and shake. They all should play, and should be better than last season thanks to experience. Still, they have a tough unit to cover, in this game. Advantage: Auburn.
Auburn secondary receivers and quarterback vs. Mississippi State safeties: Auburn has potential threats here, starting with wickedly fast junior slot receiver Will Hastings. Sophomore Eli Stove can also fly. Tight ends Jalen Harris and Sal Cannella are expected to be a big part of the passing game as well. Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham is likely the starter in the opener. In 6 games as a freshman at Baylor, Stidham was electric. That trend continued during A-Day this spring, as Stidham was deadly accurate, and showed great mobility. At safety, the likely starters for MSU are juniors Brandon Bryant and Mark McLaurin. Jonathan Abraham and J. T. Gray provide depth. Advantage: Auburn.
I think Auburn has a good chance to put up a lot of points in this game, if they are not forced into mistakes from furious blitzing. The real question will be stopping the MSU offense, particularly if their line and receivers are healed. The MSU offense has been a threat nearly every year that Dan Mullen has coached there.
The Bulldogs should come in and play hard. They will need this game, after a couple of tough SEC matchups. And their schedule does not get much easier, the rest of the way. Only UMass and Brigham Young remain out of conference, and the season-ender at Ole Miss might be the easiest SEC game left for them.
Prediction: With the package of screens Auburn offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey uses, Auburn should be able to hurt the Bulldogs when they blitz. The Tigers run away from the Bulldogs, 45-20.

Nickey Performance Builds New Vintage Continuation Super Camaros
North Aurora, Illinois, carlectors Rick and Patti Coleman are the proud owners of this Mountain Green Metallic Mist Nickey Vintage Continuation Series Super Camaro. It is the second in what hopefully will be a long line of vintage Camaro supercars built by Nickey Performance, Inc., and the first Nickey Vintage Continuation Series Super Camaro to be sold stateside. You may ask, where is Nickey Vintage Continuation Series Super Camaro number one?
“That was our prototype, and it was sold to a collector in Canada,” explains Nickey Performance CEO Stefano Bimbi. “This, our second 1967 Camaro RS/SS, was dubbed ‘Margarita’ by its owners because they like the Mountain Green Metallic Mist color, as it reminds them of their favorite drink.”
We selected this pastoral backdrop courtesy the Leroy Oaks Forest Preserve in St. Charles, Illinois, to feature Rick and Patti Coleman’s Nickey Performance Vintage Continuation Series 1967 Super Camaro RS/SS because at one time the Camaro was stored in a barn. Nickey CEO Stefano Bimbi purchased the 5,990-mile muscle car from broker Mike Wheatly, answering his advertisement on the yenko.com website.
Rick and Patti’s RS/SS was originally purchased new from Conyers Motor Company in Conyers, Georgia, in August 1967. The Hewit brothers, from Hendersonville, South Carolina, drag raced the Camaro at local Carolina tracks. At some point they repainted the car black, as they were taking some heat from friends about driving a green racecar (the color is considered to be unlucky). After the older brother lost his life in a highway accident, his widow parked the Camaro behind the family convenience store and gas station. She eventually tired of people stopping by with offers to buy the car and stored it in the basement of the family’s Lake Hartwell summer home. The car remained there for the next 9 1/2 years.
As it happened, Randy Reynolds, a GM tech retired from Indian River Chevrolet in Coco Beach, Florida, lived in the same neighborhood and kept tabs on the car. On Christmas Eve of 2006 Reynolds, armed with a pocket full of cash, apparently caught Mrs. Hewit in an agreeable mood and purchased the RS/SS for an undisclosed sum.
This is not the original 375hp, RPO L78 big-block that came with the car, nor does the car still have the factory Muncie four-speed transmission. But Bimbi and Nickey Performance technicians Matt Peckham and Joey Pacione did their level best to make the GM Performance Parts ZZ502 look as close to an original L78 as you can get.
Two days later Reynolds and body man Chris Thomas (of Lane’s Paint & Body in Hendersonville, North Carolina) began dismantling the Camaro and eventually stripped it to bare metal. Thomas repainted the RS/SS in the correct, one-year-only Code H Mountain Green Metallic Mist color.
Six and a half years later, Steve Gospodinoff, owner of S.G. Mechanical Repair Service, purchased the 5,889-mile Camaro (which had just 150 miles added since Reynolds’ rejuvenation) and spent the next two years addressing numerous small items about the car that he felt were slightly out of whack.
This 4K trim tag certifies that this is a genuine, one-year-only, 396ci/375hp RPO L78 Camaro big-block car.
“Actually, I had no intentions of ever selling her, but a guy named Mike Wheatly kept coming by and pestering me to sell,” Gospodinoff recalls. “Finally I decided to put such a high number on the car that I figured he would go away, but my plan backfired. He stepped up to the plate!”
Wheatly kept the Camaro for only a short time before advertising the car on the Yenko.net website, as he needed cash to buy a 1969 Z/28.
Affixed to the Be Cool six-core aluminum radiator and dual electric fan assembly (a smart upgrade with a 502 big-block) is a commemorative tag certifying that this Nickey 427 Vintage Continuation Series Super Camaro RS/SS was built for Patti and Rick Coleman.
“I knew it was a pretty special car, a 4K car,” says Bimbi. “What that means is that the trim tag lists the RPO L78 engine option code on the bottom. Chevrolet Division only used that in 1967. It verifies the car as a 396/375hp car. Of the 220,000 or so Camaros that were built that year, only 1,138 were produced as high-horsepower, solid-lifter RPO L78 cars, so it’s a pretty significant vehicle.”
A title search by the NCRS Dealer Delivery Data Report and a thorough examination of the trim tag further indicated that the Coleman’s RS/SS may very well be the last 1967 RPO L78 big-block built at the Norwood, Ohio, GM Assembly Plant on what is generally believed to be the last day of 1967 Camaro production, July 19, 1967.
The Coleman’s Camaro features a black vinyl Pro Car bucket-seat interior with factory gauge pack, including the factory 120-mph speedometer. Interior upgrades include a GM six-way-tilt steering column and Vintage Air climate control.
Unfortunately, the Camaro no longer had its original L78 big-block and Muncie four-speed transmission. Currently powering this beauty is a Chevrolet Performance Parts 9.6:1-compression ZZ502 Deluxe crate engine, rated at 508 hp at 5,200 rpm and 580 lb-ft at 3,600 rpm. It’s backed by a GM 4L60 four-speed automatic overdrive transmission by FLT.
The Coleman’s RS/SS does retain the original GM 12-bolt rear axle. Stefano explained that GM 12-bolt rearends don’t have a VIN stamp on them to match to the car, but this one is correctly date-coded and has a one-year-only mount for the traction bar arm.
Bimbi and company even added an original Nickey Chevrolet service sticker to the inside of the driver-side door for nostalgia’s sake.
The remainder of the Camaro’s suspension is textbook Nickey Super Camaro, including Lakewood traction bars and KYB high-performance shock absorbers. When Patti gets on the gas she wants to be assured of adequate stopping power. The Camaro makes use of the OE GM 11-inch four-piston power disc front brakes and 10-inch J65 metallic rear drum brakes. Wheels and tires consist of 15-inch American Racing Torq-Thrust IIs wrapped with Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/R high-performance radial rubber.
Inside, the RS/SS has been updated with a six-way GM tilt steering column and Vintage Air climate control. The Camaro features Pro Car bucket seats with black vinyl and a factory gauge package that includes the special redline tachometer used only on Z/28s and L78s. According to Bimbi, the Camaro also had an A.C. Delco AM radio that has been upgraded to Bluetooth and XM, yet the car still retains the original-style rear-mounted trunk antenna option.
With a “less is better” philosophy, these cars make a bold visual statement. The Coleman’s Nickey comes equipped with 15-inch American Racing Torq-Thrust II wheels and Mickey Thompson Sportsman high-performance radial rubber.
When it came to the Camaro’s exterior, the “less is better” philosophy is carried over from the original Nickey Super Camaros. Note the steel L72 Corvette-type Stinger hood, which were put on the original Nickey Super Camaros. “Most people don’t realize that 1967 Camaros did not come from GM with front and rear spoilers as so many have them added,” says Bimbi. “However, none have been installed on Margarita to maintain the crisp and clean lines of this unique car, as well as to preserve the integrity of the original sheetmetal.”
Prospective Nickey Vintage Continuation Series Super Camaro buyers can purchase these cars to look like 100 percent original Nickey Camaros, in Day Two trim, in Restomod condition (as the Coleman’s is), or full-tilt race. Although some might scoff at taking an original 1967 RPO L78 RS/SS and converting it, Bimbi claims, “Nothing was done to destroy the integrity of the car. It can be returned to stock at any time. What we have here is a very nice, very fast, dependable and comfortable driver.”
As with the originals, exterior branding is minimal with these cars. Note the understated chrome-plated “Nickey” script affixed to both sides of the L72 Corvette-type cowl induction hood. Nickey always preferred to leave the actual “statement” on the pavement with two distinct black strips of rubber.
With Nickey Performance’s past history, it makes Rick and Patti Coleman’s Margarita, shall we say, all the more “tasty.”

With 502 horses of ZZ502 beneath that L72 Corvette-style hood we couldn’t help but run a photo of Nickey Performance CEO Bimbi making like the Chi-Town Hustler on the burnout pad behind Nickey Performance. Sometimes, you got to do what ya got to do!
Rick and Patti Coleman called their Nickey Camaro Margarita because the Mountain Green Metallic Mist color reminds them of their favorite drink, says Bimbi.

Kendall Collins Turns 1970 Maverick Into A Coyote Powered Machine!
Some dare to be different. Others don’t give it a second thought. It is all they know. Mavericks are non-conformists who don’t take the path of least resistance. Taking the easy way out is just not in their nature.
That is definitely the case for Kendall Collins. As a young man, his father immersed him in automotive performance, but when the elder Collins idled into the driveway in a certain mid-size Ford, everything changed.
“I grew up at the local dragstrip here in Savannah. My dad was a car guy and a drag racer. Car shows and drag races were part of our lives. My dad brought home a 1971 Maverick when I was 14 years old and I fell in love with that car,” Kendall recalled. “It wasn’t long before it went from a street car to a drag car. It was the first real ‘drag car’ that I got to take down the track when I was 16 or 17. Before that I had only raced my street car.”
Originally billed as an affordable family car designed to compete with compact competitors like the Volkswagen Beetle and Chevy Vega, the Maverick was a humble machine never really known for its performance. A 210-horsepower, 302-cube V8 was the pinnacle of its factory powerplants, but like many Blue Oval machines it offered and affordable foundation for performance modifications.
Much like he was smitten with Ford’s Maverick, the thrill of blasting down the 1,320 stuck with Kendall like a slick on a prepped starting line. He kept running at the track for more than a decade before other priorities took precedent.
“I continued drag racing until I was 29 and my son started racing BMX at 4 years old before moving on to motocross. I quit to focus on his racing. I did that until he was 18 and he decided he was done and it was time to move onto college,” Kendall recalled. “At that point I knew it was time to build another car. I had always wanted a Maverick since I was a teenager, so it was what I was going to build.”
Those first loves are always hard to forget. He had other cars, of course, but Kendall always knew he would one day return to the car that first made his heart flutter. Plus, much like the definition of its moniker, a Maverick isn’t part of the mainstream. “Mavericks just make great looking drag cars and they are different,” Kendall said. “No matter where we would go, we would be one of the only Mavericks there, you just didn’t see them. I just really like the lines of the car.”
Appreciating an unusual vehicle is great, but finding one to buy that’s in good shape can often be a challenge. Cars that weren’t appreciated in their day are rarely squirreled away as investments. They are driven regularly, and often into the ground.
Kendall sought a clean Maverick, and he found one that had been stored for nearly three decades. The price was right too. The stage was set for a storybook build of a project he had dreamed of since his youth. Project cars don’t always play out like Hollywood scripts, however. They can be expensive, time-consuming, and frustrating. In fact, some never see the light at the end of the tunnel.
“I started searching Craigslist like mad and I finally found this one in North Georgia for $1,500. It had been in a dry warehouse for 27 years. It wouldn’t even roll. I had to drag it onto the trailer,” Kendall said. “My 70-year-old dad and I worked on it one day a week for the first eight months or so because of limited time. It sat untouched for a couple years as I got tired of working it. I bought a Fox Mustang to play with and traded that for a nice, blue 1971 Grabber.”
After his brief dalliance with a Mustang, Kendall found himself with two Mavericks, but neither quite lived up to the finished product he had dreamed of driving. The first project was at a crossroads, and it almost became one of those in-progress cars you can buy on the cheap.
“I even tried to sell the Maverick. I didn’t want to finish it. Even after I had the suspension done and a cage in the car, I was burned out,” he confessed. “Then one weekend I went to a big race and came back and sold the blue 1971 Grabber to help fund the Maverick. Then I busted my hump for the next year to get it running and driving. At the time it had a twin-turbo 5.4. That motor didn’t last long and the car was down again. I was heartbroken, but I was not going to give up. That’s when I decided to do a Coyote, as prices started coming down on them. I started working all the overtime I could stand to work, 50- to 60-hour weeks, to fund it.”
The challenge of swimming against the tide can take its toll, but if it’s all you know, you just persist. Riding that emotional roller coaster might have been enough to stop the project in its tracks for some people, but Kendall kept pushing with renewed determination and focus. He took the blown engine as an opportunity to do what he had hoped to do the first time around.
“I originally wanted to build a Coyote, but when I started the build they weren’t readily available or affordable,” he said. “By the time I hurt the 5.4, they were more available and affordable.”
Knowing that he planned to race the Coyote-powered Maverick, Kendall didn’t just drop in a stock 5.0 and call it good. Instead, he turned to Modular Head Shop to fortify the engine with Molnar Technologies rods, Wiseco Pistons, cylinder supports and more. Topping the tough short-block are stock Coyote heads prepped by Maximum Machine Works with a valve job. Modular Head Shop assembled the heads and selected the grind for the Comp Cams.
Not content to race a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter, Kendall created a custom twin-turbo system based on two Bullseye 66mm turbochargers. He crafted custom turbo headers based on block-huggers and rounded out the exhaust with 3-inch piping. He backed up the turbocharged Coyote with a Turbo 400 three-speed automatic built by Waller and an 8.8 rearend from an Explorer.
“Most of the work to the car itself was done in my two-car garage or my driveway in my spare time with some help from my family and friends,” he said.
While installing the Coyote was a bit of a challenge, the real custom work installing the previous engine paved the way for the current powerplant.
“It was very challenging, there is not a lot of room in the engine bay of a Maverick,” Kendall explained. “It took a lot of fabrication to get it to fit. As far as going from the 5.4 to the Coyote, it wasn’t that bad, as they are very similar in size and design.”
The resulting combination was still pretty fresh at the time of this writing, so its performance statistics have yet to be documented on the dragstrip and dyno. We have no doubt that this car will fly when Kendall races it at True Street events and during Hot Rod Drag Week in 2019. One of the Maverick’s early adventures, however, was a trip a car show held over the Thanksgiving weekend in Daytona Beach, Florida.
“…I drive it on the street as much as I have time to,” he said. “I drove it all around Daytona Beach for six days straight, while attending the Turkey Rod Run. I built the car to run in True Street classes.”
That means it is still streetable, if living on the edge of that classification. Sure, this hopped-up Maverick doesn’t drive like a modern Ford, but it does quite well given the purpose of its build.
“The Coyote is a very street-friendly engine, even when it’s built for high horsepower,” Kendall said. “For what it is, the car rides and drives great on the street, however it is a hot rod set up for drag racing. It’s definitely not a daily driver due to the chassis more so than the engine.”
With over five years and enough money invested to lose count, Kendall finally created a Maverick that he probably never imagined as a teen. When he fell in love with the car, he had no idea it would come to this, but we have a feeling that young Kendall would definitely be in awe of the results.

Rare Lightweight 1964 Plymouth Belvedere Still Hits the Track with Mucho Gusto
Like many of the local kids his age, George Edwards was a car crazy juvenile who was just itchin’ to get behind the wheel of his own potent ride. His dad was in the trucking business, and good ol’ pop saw fit to feed George’s passion for horsepower by buying the teenager his first ride at 14. Still too young to legally drive, George settled on turning wrenches on his “new” Model A, and waiting it out until the great state of Pennsylvania would finally let him get a driver’s license to call his own.
In the meantime, George obtained another ride, a ’48 Ford coupe, which he quickly turned into a stock car to race at the local circle track. Since he was still under age, he had to watch another guy drive his racer around the track while he manned the pits. But relief was just around the corner, as the young gun would soon turn 16, and with that celebrated day, his world would become a much happier place.
With license in hand, George hit the strip running. He realized that living life a quarter-mile at a time was what he wanted to do. So he built up a succession of hot rides, starting with a ’35 Ford sedan, which he raced C/Gas solely at his local track, the Pocono Drag Lodge, in nearby Bear Creek, Pennsylvania. Next in the garage was a stout ’33 Ford coupe, which he bought as an unfinished project. He turned it into a nasty C/A class car, which he raced till the fall of ’67.
A Yenko would soon follow, and became his weapon of choice out on the dragstrip. That car would see him through the next four years out on the quarter-mile, and it even accompanied himself and his new bride on their honeymoon, lighting up the rear tires at Cecil County Dragway along the way. Talk about a marriage made in hot rod heaven.
Light Reading George retired from racing in 1972 to keep on his family life and work. He tucked away his racers and held on to them over the years, to remind him of those great days that were now behind him. But something strange happened to him 30-odd years later. He started to get the itch to get back out on the quarter-mile again; and it was a persistent prickling that George knew that he just needed to scratch.
So in 2008, George decided it was time to go fast again. He had a few speed-demons in his collection, but he wanted something new, something different. He had always admired the super stock racers from the ’60s, and thought that might the direction to go in. “Every racer from the ’60s dreamt about owning or just racing one of those drag monsters, especially the factory lightweight ones,” says George.
It was a weekend at the Atlantic City Auto Auction that George’s life changed for the better, a case of “divine” driving intervention some would say. “I didn’t know this particular car would be there, but I guess it was just love at first site,” says George. The car that became the apple of his eye was certainly one of the finest, baddest, and most interesting of the drag wars of the mid ’60s, a ’64 426 Stage III Belvedere lightweight racer, proudly named The Reverend Mr. Black.
This particular Belvedere is certainly a rare ride, a factory race car specifically built by Chrysler to take on Ford and GM out on the country’s 1320s and do it in style. This was one of only 50 lightweight Belvederes built that year, and this one luckily survived the rigors of quarter-mile life, and did it with most of its original drivetrain intact. Only the original rear had been swapped out for an improved Dana 60, still stuffed with beefy 4.56 gears. The 12.5:1 compression, dual-carbureted Max Wedge was still there, and shifted by its original 727 transmission.
So, knowing this was the car he truly “needed” in his life, he sought out the owner and started the ball rolling. Turns out the title bearer wasn’t in the best of health, and really needed to see the car go to a new owner. So George hashed out a deal with him without the car crossing the block, and claimed her as his own. Before the first gavel fell, George already had the car packed away and ready to head to its new home. “Automobiles of this pedigree do not come around often, so I just had to buy it,” confesses George.
Mr Black’s Story The Ebony-skinned coupe had been raced since new, taking on the moniker “The Reverend Mr. Black” after the Kingston Trio song of the same name. Having other racer cars prior to this one, the original owner Howard Williamson dubbed it “III” as it succeeded two other Plymouths of the similar breed. It was purchased new at Powell Plymouth in Jacksonville, Florida. It was in the southeast where the car did most of its damage on the local dragstrips in its early years, preying on the meek Brand X rides that took him on. It won the SS/A class at the ’65 NASCAR Drag Racing Winternationals and even match raced against Richard Petty in Albany, Georgia, and beat “The King” to the finish line.
The car was decked out from the start the way any racer should. From birth, it possessed the 12.5:1 high-compression Super Stock 426-III powerplant, fed by a pair of Carter AFB carburetors on an aluminum cross-ram intake. A stout 727 TourqueFlite did the shifting via the Chrysler pushbutton system (the last year for those controls), and it fed a stout 8 ¾ rear out back stuffed with 4.56 gears. It was also decked out with other divine goodies from Mother Mopar, including a dual-breaker distributor, heavy-duty radiator, and rear located 90-amp battery.
With the purchase of the 12.5 compression engine, you also could order the Light Weight Package, which Mr. Williams did. That option consisted of an array of front-end panels built from aluminum. These included the hood with scoop, fenders, front bumper and supports, and radiator air shield, stone deflector, crossbar, and vertical support brace. Even the carpet was of a lightweight fabric to help shed a few more pounds.
These factory racers were just that, a complete package ready to hit the track with owner’s needing just to “tune and gas-up” to dominate the strip. But there were several modifications made to this lightweight from the start by Williamson. The 12-point rollcage was a must for safety precautions. Dodge van seats replaced the originals and continue with the lightweight racer theme. A set of headers was added to get rid of the spent gases.
All this godly-goodness led to some low e.t.’s and high trap speeds. Williamson held onto the car for a few years, and then passed it on to a small succession of owners, each of whom continued to bring Mr. Black to the track, and thrash any Brand X racer that dared line up against it. More mods were made to the car at this point, including the Dana 60 with Strangle axles out back, a floor shifter between the seats and mini-tubs out back. Skinny mags were added up front, and wide steelies were placed out back — shod in 32×14.5-15 slicks.
These Mopar lightweights continued their quarter-mile domination that its predecessor Plymouth and Dodge racers forged the years before it. The Reverend Mr. Black carried on over the years, taking on comers at tracks across the east. In the mid ’80s, the car was stripped down and the paint refreshed, with the painter recreating its complete graphics package. It then moved on to a small collection in New Jersey, where it sat for a few years, decommissioned from racing with less than 1,000 miles showing on the odometer. The last in line was the gentleman that George ended up purchasing the car from.
King George and the Reverend Once in Edward’s possession, the car got a few new add-ons to help out its time on the track. One key ingredient added by the new owner was a new powerplant. Worried that his thrashing might damage the Max Wedge, he built a new one up from period-correct parts. “I ran the car hard for two years and, as most drag racers, wanted to go faster and also I didn’t want to hurt the old bullet,” Edwards says.
The new powerplant is a stroker motor from Carolina Machine in Johnston, South Carolina.  It’s a 522ci beast based on a 440ci block that’s pushed the dyno to 640 hp at 5,500 and 690 lb-ft torque at 4,400 rpm. It uses a repop cross-ram intake (a Mopar Performance piece which differs slightly from the original) and OEM AFB carbs. It also has the original oil pan with the tie-rod cutout. “My goal was to have the car run a consistent mid 10s, and I’ve accomplished that. Anything more would be tough on the drum brakes,” Edwards admits. Other changes include a transbrake for take offs, a new torque converter to improve 60-foot times, and 4:10 gears to keep the rpm down through the traps.
Future Plans George is smitten with his Mopar ride, and it makes you wonder why he didn’t race more Pentastars back in the day. Having owned only Fords and Chevys over the years, he has now realized that he had missed something. “My one regret is that I only wish I could have owned the Reverend when it was new. It would have been very exciting driving it back then.”
Well, luckily George is making up for it now, hitting the local nostalgia drag races, and thrashing the competition whenever he gets the chance. The 50-plus-year-old ride shows no mercy to its rivals, and dishes out a fiery “sermon of speed” whenever it hits the 1320. Like the rear trunk panel says; “The Reverend Black is Back … and is he ever MAD.”

1968 Ford F-100: This Rejuvenated Ride Has Lots of Subtle Extras
There are lots of different approaches to the old truck hobby. Some folks like the classic lines of vintage tin and are happy just to get a 50- or 60-year-old truck rolling and functional. Once it’s safe and ready for the road, it’s a thrill to be behind the wheel. Others are looking for rolling works of art—chopped, slammed, and sporting megabuck paintjobs—rides designed especially for the show circuit with “Garage Queen” a sought-after goal. Somewhere in-between is Jody Adams, a general contractor from Green Cove Springs, Florida. Jody is a long-term enthusiast, having created eight previous show-winning, restomod Fords over the years. His connection has some early roots, beginning when his father bought a 1951 Ford way back when Jody was just 6 years old. He’s been hooked on Blue Oval products ever since; the F-100 body style is a particular favorite.
He found his latest project truck on eBay, smiling when he says that his wife, Evie, probably won’t hand him that tablet again! He wasn’t especially looking for a new build but it was a rainy afternoon and Evie asked if he wanted to look at anything on the Internet. Casually, Jody said, “Pull up 1967-1969 Ford trucks.” A brief scan highlighted several trucks, including one that had been listed for only two hours. Since it was located not that far away in Georgia, a phone call and $2,700 later, and the deal was done. Jody and Evie drove out and back in one day, returning with the latest F-100 project for the Adam’s garage. The 1968 shortbed sheetmetal was fair and equipped with a 360 V-8 under the hood. Purchased in July 2016, work on the truck didn’t start until November 2016 but thanks to years of experience, it was finished relatively quick and ready for a little competition on the show scene in August 2017.
When Jody begins a new custom, he strips it completely, separating the body from the chassis, deciding what’s usable and what needs to be ordered. He stayed with the original frame and although he’s boxed several frames in the past, experience has told him that the original rails work fine. He also opted to stay with Ford’s I-beam suspension but did make a few significant changes. Upgrades began with DJM’s dropped I-beam frontend, along with Master Power front disc brakes. Their 13-inch rotors and power booster ensured modern stopping power while the aftermarket Ford power steering pump made the truck easy to park. In the rear, aftermarket leaf springs and lowered DJM shackles gave the truck just the right stance, dropping it 3 inches in front and 5 inches in the rear. The DJM kit also included custom-matched shocks to smooth out the ride. The original Ford 9-inch rear was completely rebuilt with Auburn internals and 3.0 gears. Jody knew that the horsepower of the planned new motor meant the fairly tall gearing would work without a problem and, as a side benefit, he’d probably be able to ease by a few gas stations! Before the body was mounted to the chassis, everything was powdercoated in black and gray Silver Vein. Once it came back and all the suspension components were added, the chassis became a roller thanks to the set of 18-inch Boss Motorsports rims up front and 20-inch versions in the rear, all wrapped in 40- and 45-series General G-Max rubber.
Jody especially likes the distinctive sound of a big-block and when his friend, Ron Stalnaker of Ron’s Transmissions had a 460 block available, so he wasted no time adding it to the collection of parts assembled for the Ford. Stroked to 520 ci with a Scat crank and Mahle pistons, the big mill sucks in a big gulp thanks to the Holley 850 Ultra Double Pumper on an Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap intake. A COMP Cams bumpstick activates the valves in the TrickFlow heads while the MSD Master Blaster electronic ignition fires precisely timed lightning strikes. Custom-modified Sanderson headers scavenge spent gases, exiting through a 2.5-inch system and quieted by a pair of Flowmasters. All the accessories are powered by the March Front Runner serpentine belt and pulley systems. The high-performance engine, detailed with chrome and stainless steel, is showcased in the bright silver engine room. Power from the 695hp V-8 is multiplied by a C-6 three-speed automatic trans, beefed up by Ron’s Transmissions to handle the load with a 2500 stall speed. His friend Karl Altomare with SRI Racing supplied the parts with Jody and Mark Neald assembling the engine.
When it came time for the interior and exterior the goal for the truck was to retain an original look but with definite surprises once you looked deeper. “I wanted to give it that extra punch that you would do for a hot rod back in the day,” Jody told us. All the body panels were brought back to better-than-new condition with fresh window glass and rechromed trim. A friend sprayed the Martin Senour Silver Nugget basecoat/clearcoat on the body, interior, engine room, and bed, creating the perfect contrast to the black leather used inside. Tom Kramer from Jacksonville, Florida, did the stitchwork with Jody choosing the color and providing photos for the interior design. The factory bench seat was retained, upgraded with new springs and memory foam. Incorporating red accent strips and eyelets into the rich black leather on the seat Kramer duplicated the theme on the door panels and headliner. All the extras like dashpads, armrests, and more came from the Dennis Carpenter Ford Restoration Parts catalog. “Whatever new parts they had I bought them so that everything would have a new look. That was consistent with the plan for the truck to look like an original but with just a little hot rod added.” The Classic Car Stereo met that criteria perfectly, maintaining a nostalgic look for the dash but featuring all modern connections. Twin Pioneer 6×9 four-way speakers in the kick panels fill the cab with ’50s gold while the Vintage Air A/C blows cold through custom vents added to the lower portion of the dash.
Jody unveiled the finished truck in August 2017 where it captured the overall Points Championship trophy at the 2017 Pigeon Forge F-100 Supernationals. The freshly completed ride also made the Top Five in Maggie Valley and took home the Best of Show trophy in the All Truck Nationals in Sevierville, Tennessee, along with a $1,000 cash prize. Jody builds his vehicles initially for show and begins driving them after about a year. This truck will soon become his regular driver since there’s another 1969 F-100 waiting in the wings, scheduled to be unveiled at this year’s F-100 Supernationals.
Although Jody does lots of his own work, expert assistance is always welcome and appreciated. Special thanks to Mark Neald (engine and wiring), Karl Altomare (SRI Racing), Tom and Kathy from Flashback Ford, Ron Stalnaker (transmission), John Marques (stainless steel repair), Vince from Dennis Carpenter, Mike Minigh (brake and chassis work), Tom Kramer (upholstery), and Baron from Lee & Cates Glass for their help in creating his show-winning ride.

Tom King’s 1956 Ford F-100 Custom Cab Small Window
There are some experiences in life that are so moving they stay with you forever. More often they are private, known only to ourselves, but every now and then they bubble to the surface and help define who we are. One look at Tom King’s cool truck and you’ll know the one that changed him.
Tom joined the Marine Corps when he was in college and was commissioned upon graduation in 1958. He was a rifle platoon commander in the First Marine Division and attained the rank of captain before being discharged, remaining in the Marine Corps reserve until 1965. “It was a wonderful learning experience,” he told us and its influence is still obvious. While Tom may have found another occupation in civilian life, working in real estate finance and development, he never really left the Corps. The proof is his beautiful 1956 F-100. It’s his first custom truck and it came about because he always admired the look of 1953-1956 Fords. “They are like the deuce coupe of pickup trucks with their classic lines,” he told us.
Tom found the truck on the Internet, located in Lawrenceville, Georgia. It was on consignment at a restoration shop and had received a cosmetic restoration with some suspension and engine work. The red truck looked good and although he was able to drive it home, there were a few issues needing correction. Living in Jacksonville, Florida, Tom made a great connection with Jim Mercer of the Street Rod Shop in Orange Park, Florida, the place where some of the minor problems with the truck were corrected. Tom couldn’t help but notice the impressive upgrades that Mercer had made to other vehicles in the shop and decided he would take his own truck a step further. The list grew and the sophistication of the Ford increased, but it was not a quick process. During the four-year upgrade, the decision was made to completely disassemble the truck; when the sheetmetal was dipped and stripped, it uncovered some serious body issues. As a result of prior repairs, many of the parts were beyond saving and after a painful assessment everything but the cab, the hood, a fender, and one running board were replaced. Once the structural rigidity of the body was reestablished, upgrades to the frame were next, boxing it for strength and installing a 19-gallon fuel tank between the rear rails. The frame, suspension pieces, and inner fender panels were all powdercoated in Silver Vein for looks. Suspension mods were next, beginning with rejuvenating the 1979 Firebird front clip that came with the truck. Global West upper and lower tubular A-arms modernized the frontend and a Chassis Engineering ladder bar upgrade was added to hold the 1968 Monte Carlo 10-bolt rear, also on the Effie when it was purchased. Strange coilovers stabilize all four corners.
To take advantage of the crisp new suspension, the 302 V-8 was sent to Jasper Engines in Indiana for a complete rebuild. All the internals were upgraded and Tom opted for a showy Holley Tri-Power setup with progressive linkage that works the three two-barrel carbs. The center carb provides economical cruising but all three can smoke the rear tires when Tom hits the long skinny pedal. MSD electronic ignition lights the fire and BBK shorty headers feed a pair of Flowmasters, creating a mellow performance rumble. A March Performance serpentine belt drive system powers all the accessories, the oversized Griffin radiator is augmented with a 16-inch SPAL electric fan, and the engine room benefits from a smoothed firewall and chrome 302 emblem. The potent V-8 is matched up to a Ford AOD four-speed trans that turns 3.73 gears.
Once the powertrain upgrades were complete, the attention shifted to the interior, beginning with plush Cadillac De Ville eight-way power seats, complete with center armrest, console, and embroidered F-100 emblems. The tilt and telescoping 1962 Cad steering column is equipped with a Lokar cruise control and topped with a Lecarra wheel. Changes to the dash included new paint along with a separate panel added below to handle the clock, stereo, and power door lock controls. The original gauges were refurbished and the auxiliary tach from Super Pro keeps track of the high-revving V-8. Creature comforts include power windows, power door locks, and Vintage Air for those warm Florida summers. The Custom Autosound stereo controls the 10-CD changer hidden below the center armrest. The setup fills the cab with old-time rock ’n’ roll and an occasional Souza March when Tom feels the need for a little Marine motivation. Mike’s Auto Upholstery in Callahan, Florida, did the stitchwork, covering the seats and door panels with Soft Touch Perforated blue and gray vinyl, then accenting the interior with dark blue carpet and Marine Corps floormats.
Tom liked the lines of the classic F-100 so body mods on the Custom Cab Small Window 1956 were kept to a minimum. The tilt forward hood now properly displays the detailed engine and a new Dennis Carpenter Ford Restoration Parts bed replaced the original. Oak planks separated by stainless steel strips provide a traditional look to the bed floor while custom oak side rails match the oak inserts on the running boards. Tom’s pride in his Marine Corps heritage can be seen in the bed, beginning with the World War I Marine Corps ammo box, now holding the truck’s battery and the special oak cradle for the bed-mounted spare tire, also sporting a Marine Corps emblem. An additional Marine emblem was added to the front bumper and there is an Eagle Globe and Anchor on the rear bumper. The Marine Corps license plate shows the year and model of the truck. (No doubt there will be a few more Corps-related accents since those of us in the Corps know you can’t be a Marine without bragging about it!) The final step was paint, with the Honda Blue Pearl and BMW Metallic Silver sprayed by the Street Rod Shop. The truck rolls on American Racing 15×7 wheels and 70 series BFGoodrich rubber.
The truck has been complete since 2009 and it sees occasional show duty and is a weekend cruiser. When we asked Tom if he was happy with the way the truck turned out, he smiled and said, “I’ve told my wife when I check out, just put me in the Ford and bury us both with a big backhoe!” No doubt, when the time comes, he’ll be in Dress Blues.

Steeda Autosports cracks the 10-second zone with a 2018 Mustang GT
When this author thinks of a 10-speed, thoughts of old-school bicycles come to mind. However, these days in the Mustang market, when someone mentions 10-speed, they’re talking about the 2018 Mustang GT’s 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission. The 10R80 has been the hot cheese since the cars hit the streets, but the trick has been getting the transmission to play nice with other performance modifications.
Steeda Autosports has figured it out, and recently applied all 481 horses to the pavement, blasting a 10.98 at 126 mph. How did Steeda do it? You’re about to find out.
Starting with a non-Performance Pack 2018 Mustang GT with a 3.15 gear, Steeda techs added Ford Performance Parts 4.09 gears, American Racing Headers long-tubes with a corresponding X-pipe, a dumped after-cat exhaust, and Race Star Recluse big n’ littles with Mickey Thompson ET Street R 305/45-17s. From the Steeda catalog, the guys installed the company’s cold air intake, Stop the Hop package, drag springs, billet shock mounts, adjustable rear shocks, drag sway bar, rear lower control arm bearings, urethane differential bushings, and a custom tune.
Those upgrades were added at Steeda’s Pompano Beach, Florida headquarters before heading up to the company’s Valdosta, Georgia location. Once across the Florida/Georgia line, Steeda’s Scott Boda made a couple test hits on Steeda Way before taking the car over to South Georgia Motorsports Park for official times. The very first pass the car ran an 11.16. “We went nuts,” Scott says, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. A couple adjustments lowered the car’s time down to an 11.02 with a stout 1.70 short time. One last attempt at the 10s that night resulted in hitting the rev limiter and first gear, which negatively affected the elapsed time.
In the Fox days, having a 10-second car took a lot of work, but with today’s technology, 10s is relatively easy. Steeda makes it look easy, of course, but if you want a 10-second 2018 Mustang GT, Steeda has the recipe.
Never one to give up, Scott and the gang went back to SGMP the next morning to make more attempts at the 10-second zone. With temps in the high-70s and a density altitude of 1,400 feet, the car ran an 11.008 right off the bat, followed by a hot-lapped 11.01. Both times had a 1.69 short time. “After one final set of adjustments…Boom, 10.98 at 126.35 mph with a 1.68 short time,” Scott says.
As of this writing, Scott says they just added a QA1 carbon fiber driveshaft, which is 10 pounds lighter than the stock unit. “It also makes the car feel much smoother up top,” Scott says. “The factory one vibrated bad over 75 mph with the 4.09 rear gear.” Scott and the Steeda crew will be returning to the track this weekend in an effort to improve on the 10.98. Something tells us Steeda will have a 10.80 car on its hands.

This “Replacement Ride” Rocks!
Some folks adopt the old truck hobby late in life while others were born into it. Larry Stewart, from Panama City, Florida, smiles when he describes his early automotive experience that revolved around ingenuity rather than trips to the parts store. “Back then you made things work the best way you could. My brother, Warren, and I couldn’t afford proper clamps, so exhaust pipes and mufflers were always held in place with coat hangers!” Those early builds were challenging and fun but family and careers put their hobby on hold for many years. “Now that the family is grown,” Larry says, “it’s my time!” Once retirement finally arrived, both he and his brother got back to doing what they loved, teaming up to build individual cars for themselves and friends. Together, they’ve created more than a dozen in the last 15 years. Significantly, the first car on that list was a 1947 Ford, still owned and loved by Larry’s wife, Cam, an avid enthusiast just like her husband.
His current truck turns out to be a replacement for one of his favorite rides. He owned a 1956 Ford pickup for several years. It was a special truck and he did not want to let it go. “A guy bugged me continuously for a year, wanting me to sell the truck. I finally threw out a price that I thought was ridiculous and he bought it on the spot.” While the cash was nice, Larry’s first priority was to fill the void, and after a concerted search, he found this 1953 F-100 in 2015 at a swap meet in Moultrie, Georgia. The truck looked good but it was far from complete, making it the perfect candidate for what Larry had in mind. Upgrades became a process of working with the existing mods and adding enough personalization so that Larry could call it his own. Assessing the Ford’s strong points, the boxed frame had a 1988 Crown Victoria front end in place with disc brakes and power steering. Larry refreshed everything with new components, adding lowering springs for a subtle change in ride height. Out back, a 1999 Ford 8.8 limited-slip SUV rear gets the power to the ground.
Larry is quick to admit he’s not an engine mechanic but the still strong, late-model 302 V-8 was crying out for some modern aftermarket upgrades. He began with a new Edelbrock aluminum intake, 600-cfm four-barrel carb, and ceramic-coated, block hugger headers. Flowmaster added the appropriate performance rumble while the chrome valve covers and air cleaner provided a little sparkle to the engine room. A C-6 automatic seamlessly transmits the power.
Exterior changes followed the same pattern, blending existing mods with personal touches that reflected the new owner’s tastes. The clean front end benefits from a custom pan, a tilt forward hood, and deleted bumper. The traditional Ford grille was painted body color. In the rear, the bed uses all new sheetmetal with a Line of Fire light strip accenting the stamped Ford logo on the tailgate. Oak planks, separated by stainless steel strips, follow a traditional format and a billet gas cap provides access to the relocated tank. Since stance is everything in a custom truck, 2-inch wider fenders were added for a touch of style and to accommodate the aggressive American Racing 20-inch wheels and BFGoodrich rubber. New running boards connect the front and rear fenders. The paint on Larry’s F-100 is a combination of deep red and bright silver, separated with a yellow pinstripe and a carbon-fiber shadow line. Happy that all the external upgrades had been addressed, Larry moved inside, beginning with a Dakota Digital instrument package that uses a combination of analog and digital, whiteface gauges. A chrome, CCP adjustable steering column and wheel keep the driver in close touch. Custom-upholstered Mustang buckets are separated by a new center console, with burgundy and gray vinyl added to the seats, console, door panels, and headliner. The Alpine stereo powers speakers in the kick panels and behind the seats while the Southern Air A/C keeps the cabin cool during warm Panama City nights.
The completed 1953 is a joy to drive and fills the void created by the lost 1956. Larry and Cam, along with their friends from the Crazy Cruisers Car Club, enjoy driving and showing their rides throughout the year. Interestingly, it just takes one look at this beautiful F-100 to see how things changed for this long-term enthusiast. The pristine truck doesn’t have a single coat hanger anywhere!
