It’s been 10 years now since my surgery. So far so good! I think I was down to about 155 when they took the staples out. I can’t believe I thought the weight loss was from all the trips to the gym and healthy eating. Be sure to pay attention to your body and get checked out by a doctor when things feel off. Colon cancer is striking younger and younger. Early detection is key. I’m so thankful for the life I have now. I feel very lucky.

February 28th
Tumblr media
It’s become a little bit of a tradition for me to look back at my life and collect my thoughts  on the last day of February. February 28th seems to be a significant date for me. In 2012, I left Ohio, after a divorce that ended a 22 year relationship, heading back to California on the 28th. I had no idea what was in store for me. I was truly lost. In 2014  I was diagnosed with colon cancer on the 28th. It was the scariest moment of my life. I’m grateful to the doctors and nurses to got me through the days following the diagnosis, my friends who were there for me, another theme park and most importantly Brittany who never left my side.
In 2015, the 28th was 2 weeks before the Ultimate Pi Day Wedding where I would get to marry my best friend, Brittany. The date chosen because is was the first time we went out after my cancer surgery, for pie. We went to Disneyland the next day.
A year later, in 2016 we were at another theme park on the 28th, Universal Studios, having a normal fun day.
In 2018 we were at Disney Aulani Resort with Xander hanging out by the pool as a family of 3!
In 2020 we were at the Magic Happens premiere at Disneyland and preparing for a trip to Disneyland Paris when the pandemic canceled our trip. We got the call for Emily when we would have been on that trip. In 2021 we were preparing for the March DisneyBound challenge as a family of 4 (about to finalize Emily’s adoption with no idea we’d be getting the call for Ezra in 2 months).
Today, in 2023, we got rained out of the Magic Happens return last weekend but we are all healthy and doing well. We’re waiting to finalize Ezra’s adoption. I feel amazingly lucky and grateful to have experienced so much since returning to California. I will say two things.
1. When you are down and think it won’t get any better, remember you never know what is about to happen or who you are about to meet on OK Cupid or that the social worker is about to ask you to take a child into your home or any number of major or minor events that will shape your life. There is always something to look forward to.
2. Listen to your body. Done wait for symptoms to just go away. Get checked. Talk to doctors. For me, the caught it early. A good friend of mine wasn’t so lucky. Early detection is key for many things. For Colon cancer, it’s one of the most treatable if caught early. Tomorrow also starts colorectal cancer awareness month. Get screened. If you made it this far, thanks for reading. I’m glad you are here and thankful for you all.
