John reacts to Hope’s first date fic, please?
Ahhhh!!! Dad!John being super dad, yes this.
———-
“John? You’re busting the couch.”
John automatically lets go of the arm of the couch, pulling his fingers out of the indentations his grip had made. “Right. Sorry.”
Clarice smirks at him. She’s sitting on the other end of the same couch, reading a book, her toes tucked under his thigh. “I thought you said you were okay with this.”
“I am.” He is. He’s totally fine with Hope going out on her first date with some random kid he hardly knows. Or well, he didn’t really know until Hope said she was going on a date with him. Now John knows all about Gavin Winters and about his past (runaway from Tennessee), his powers (talks to computers and cars and other stuff like that), and his personality (nerdy/shy/nice? he doesn’t talk a lot).
He hates to admit it, but it’s still somehow a little different with Riley than it was with JD, this whole first date thing. JD has gone on a few dates now, and they were all nice kids and everything turned out fine (though everyone secretly thinks he’ll one day decide to date Aurora), but this is Hope. His little girl. Though not so little anymore, since she’s fourteen now. She’s still petite though, like her mother. She looks so much like her mom, except for her eyes. She has John’s eyes.
And what if this shy, nice, nerdy kid hurts his little girl? Yes, she can take care of herself, but she’s John’s daughter. And he loves her so much, he always has, since the moment she entered the world with those brown eyes, pointy ears, and fluffy purple-blue hair. He hates the idea of someone messing with her emotions, toying with her, hurting her.
Yeah, Gavin had best be a complete gentleman, which John had made clear before he let the two of them leave the cabin after Gavin stopped by to get Hope.
“They were just going for a walk by the river,” Clarice says again, guessing at what was making him frown at the door.
“They shouldn’t be down there alone. And it’s been two hours.”
“There’s always people at the river, so you know they’re not totally alone,” Clarice said, making a face at him, “Honestly, you weren’t like this with JD.”
“I know. I’m trying not to be.” He was protective of JD, yeah, but he also didn’t break the furniture. But Hope is his youngest and his daughter and she gets so attached so easily…he can’t help but worry about her.
He hears them coming up the path before they’re anywhere near the cabin, and he does his best to not listen in. He doesn’t want to eavesdrop on them so he looks at Clarice. “They’re coming back.”
“Stop spying!” Clarice chides, reaching over to flick him on the arm. “Leave her alone.”
“I can’t help it,” John says, “I can’t turn my ears off. Distract me?”
“Now that I can do.” She leans over and kisses him, her hand sliding up his arm. She monopolizes his focus, to the point where Hope and her date are on the front porch before he realizes it. The door opens, and Hope is standing in the doorway, her eyebrow raised.
She turns to her date, the grey-haired boy with black and silver eyes, and then seems to make a conscious decision to not be embarrassed. “They do this a lot,” she tells Gavin with a fond sigh that says she loves her parents even if they do make her crazy sometimes. She turns to John and Clarice and smiles. “We’re going to go play basketball with the twins and Roberto and some other people,” she says, “So you guys can go back to being all lovey-dovey, if you want.” With a wicked grin, she darts out the door before they can say anything else, taking Gavin with her.
John wishes she could have stayed little forever, but his and Clarice’s girl is turning into a sharp-witted, amazing young woman.

Fake Out
This is a future family AU for The Gifted that @bisexualblink and I have created together! It’s been a LOT of fun, and there will be a lot of these in the future. The Thunderblink kids are 8 and 4 here.

“…love…”
“…uper duper sleepy.”
“Mommy…”
Clarice rolled over, ignoring the voices and dragging the pillow over her head. She slid her arm across the mattress, expecting to brush her fingers against her husband or one of the kids, but there wasn’t anything. Huh. Bed to herself. Oh rare luxury.
She sprawled out, shoving one leg over on John’s still-warm side of the bed, using her free hand to snag his pillow and drag it to her side. Getting the bed to herself? She must’ve still been dreaming.
“I think she’s not gonna wake up.”
John’s laugh was muffled through the pillow over her head, but she still heard it. “She’s already awake, she’s just faking.”
Oh whatever, she was not. She was definitely still going to catch those last few minutes of sleep before they—
“Here, JD, use this.”
John, you dirty enabler. Clarice braced herself, and sure enough, a second later she was batted across the back with something soft and squishy. Determinedly, she didn’t flinch or wriggle around. Instead, she forced herself to stay perfectly still and pretend her son wasn’t gently walloping her with a pillow.
“Mooom!” JD sang, laughter in his voice, “You have to get up, come on. We’re going on a hike, remember?”
She felt Hope sit down, her back to Clarice’s side, and Hope’s little hand patted her hair. “And I get to wear my tutu.”
“Nope,” John said, “We talked about that already. Tutus and the woods don’t mix, princess.”
“I can wear the green tutu.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
JD tugged at the pillow covering Clarice’s head, and she had to hold on to keep it in place. Changing tactics, JD crawled up toward the top of the bed and laid down on Clarice’s other side. “We brought you a muffin! And coffee. And I brought a tangerine ‘cause you liked the ones that Uncle Marcos got from that guy, the one with the cool scales.”
Oh, right, that guy from Florida who had been going up to Canada. He had control over plants, and he had grown a temporary tangerine tree for Marcos when Marcos had guided him through Georgia. Marcos had brought the extras home to the HQ for everyone. JD’s coaxing was tempting, and almost enough to make her get up, but she also liked laying there with the two kids boxing her in. It was nice, so she stayed under her pillow a little longer while Hope played with her hair and JD nuzzled her shoulder.
“You two are spoiling her,” John said, and she heard him put some stuff down on the nightstand. Breakfast. “She’s never going to get up now.”
Hope dropped back down on the bed and started to crawl under the covers. Clarice automatically snatched her and pulled her close, letting go of the pillow in exchange for something better. JD flopped over Clarice’s back, and then the mattress dropped a little as John sat down on the edge. A strong, calloused hand wrapped around her leg and tugged, and all three of them slid toward John.
“You don’t hate hiking,” John said, resting his hand on the back of her neck and then threading his fingers into her hair, “You just want to keep the kids for yourself.”
“I’ll take you, too,” Clarice said, opening her eyes into slits and grinning wickedly at him, “I’ll keep all of you for myself.”
John smirked before leaning down and stealing a kiss. “And exactly how are you going to keep me?”
“I have my ways.”
“You’re being mushy,” JD said, shoving up onto his elbows. His shaggy dark hair fell in his face, but his bright green eyes, almost the same shade as her own, peered at her hopefully. “What about hiking?”
Clarice was about to explain how they could go hiking tomorrow when a furry black and white blur raced into the room and leapt on the bed. Zingo licked John’s face and crawled over Clarice and bumped against JD and then started digging into the covers after Hope. Any hope Clarice had held for a quiet morning was instantly shattered and quickly followed by peals of giggles and little shrieks of laughter from Hope and JD.
The dog unburied Hope. The four-year-old pushed her dark purple and blue hair out of her golden-brown eyes and grabbed for Zingo before the dog bounced off the bed, dashing out of the room with the kids tearing after her.
Clarice sat up and brushed at her own messy hair before glancing at John through purple strands.
“What kind of muffin did you bring as a peace offering?”
John smirked and reached over to grab the muffin. “Apple cinnamon.”
“Mmm. You’re forgiven.” She supposed she could get up and go hiking if she had coffee and an apple cinnamon muffin to bolster her.
“I didn’t ask for forgiveness,” John teased, “You like hiking, Clarice. So I don’t need forgiveness.”
“You’re still forgiven for waking me up.”
John looped an arm around her waist and pulled her against his side as she started to chow down on the muffin. “Thank you?”
“Hell yeah, thank you.”

Can you tell me more about James and Ali? I’m not sure who they are or how old they would be in the gifted?
Sure! James is John’s canon younger brother, and his codename is Warpath. They’ve alluded to him in interviews a few times, and I would freak out so much if they actually talked about him on the show. He shows up in the Days of Our Future Past movie, and he’s played by Booboo Stewart. Ali’s full name is Alison Blaire, and her codename is Dazzler. She doesn’t show up in the movies, or hasn’t yet, but in the comics, she’s usually portrayed as some kind of singer (her music tastes change through the years). I usually fancast her as Chloe Grace Moretz. They’re a totally random ship I’ve fallen in love with, but they’ll never happen in-canon.
In most of my AUs, I headcanon a ten year age gap between John and James, and since I headcanon John as being about 28-29, James and Ali would be about 18-19 at the time of The Gifted’s first season. I write Ali as being the same age as James. ^_^
Currently, I think the only AU where I’ve switched up that age difference headcanon for John and James is in my Modern No Powers AU, where I have them with a five year age gap. In my Resistance AU series, I keep writing the story in non-sequential order, so I usually designate how old James and Ali are at the beginning each story, or try to. They’re in the Thunderblink Family AU, too, and they’re married and about 27-28 in “Take My Hand.”
Hope that helps!! ^_^ I really love writing about these two, but they are pretty random, hehe…
