OK I'm really late to the thieves in time conversation (TiT was the first sly game I was actually able to play for myself since I'm as old as the series, I watched my brother for the trilogy, so I did have my rose colored lenses on) and this post is really not gonna be a big "AND THE STORY SUCKS AND THE ANCESTORS SUCK AND-" Because I wanna talk about sly and Carmelita's relationship specifically.
IN UNRELATED EVENTS I GOT THE INSPIRATION FOR THIS FROM LISTENING TO LOST IN THE WOODS FROM FROZEN 2, DONT ASK, Anyway
I felt really disappointed in how sly and Carmelita's relationship was handled in TiT, it just felt like we went back to square one in their dynamic. Sly made a getaway and Carmelita blew up on him, only this time there's the awkward tension of them having actually been a thing. Firstly, for sly to do that was fucked up and with all the care he has for Carmelita, I expected it to weigh on him in a more serious tone than what we saw before the reunion. And Carmelita's response felt, underwhelming. Of course she's hotblooded so she's gonna react in her typical anger, but I felt they should've went the opposite direction.
With the way things were, it felt like another reset, sly gets away and he teases Carmelita and Carmelita is hotheaded. I think the impact of what sly did would've been better if Carmelita didn't blow up on him. If the hurt she felt outweighed everything and she just treated him with cold indifference. Maybe with a line of "so really EVERYTHING is a scheme to you." If Carmelita reacted completely opposite of what sly is used to, I think it would've a) hit him harder and b) show how their relationship developed off screen. If Sly left Carmelita in that state of almost silence, we could've gotten something really interesting out of it. We could've seen sly evaluate himself in terms of romance. He and Carmelita started with a chase and that was the fun of, the temporary tease. And of course having the opportunity to have something real, they jumped at it because they really do like each other.
So Sly knows he truly likes/loves Carmelita, but with the stunt he pulled of course she would feel like he never did genuinely. So when they meet with Carmelita again, their whole thing could've developed with Sly learning how to move with their new dynamic and how he can't expect Carmelita to react the same as she always did, and him needed to prove to her that what they had was real. This could open for Carmelita hanging with the others more and growing relationships with Murray and Bentley which is always nice and would add to the ending.
Sly has been trying his hardest to prove himself since the West, Carmelita, while not forgiving him, is seeing him being genuine as he's around family that's basically doomed. So come the final battle, (I can't recall how the setup is RN all I know is Carmelita is trapped) sly loses his cane to get Carmelita out and acts as a parallel to the first game. He's down to nothing and he knows he messed up with Carmelita, but she helps him anyway. They can have a quick heart to heart as she ACTUALLY gets a role in the boss fight like previous games, their talk could be a promise to try again at least. And then Sly gets sent back to Egypt. And Carmelita's pain would make a lot more sense.
I'm not 100% on everything TiT tried doing with their relationship but I know for sure it wasn't this deep, and Sly games aren't afraid of getting deep so I hope if we get some sort of redo on TiT, they actually DO something meaningful with their relationship and not just the same thing again
