Have to post one more from running gravel roads through the prairie the last couple days. . It’s a whole different feeling to ride on such a wide, flat, and open expanse for hours on end, with only the occasional farm truck or giant farm machinery sharing the road. . Look at the map in the morning, check the sun, and head out in the general direction I want to go, zig-zagging through the grid of farm roads and letting them take me where they will. Some of the roads are only one vehicle wide and if a big combine or harvester comes the other way, you each half to go half off the road to scoot by each other. . I’ve been running back country roads like this for years and every time my mind wanders to what it must have been like to cross these prairies on foot and in wagons as America expanded west, with only the ruts from previous wagons showing the way, if anything.
