Marble is a metamorphic rock that developed from limestone. Most of the material is calcite and dolomite. It is often used for sculpture, as a building material, and for many other purposes. The word ‘marble’ is also used for other stones that can be polished well and for ball-shaped objects used for child games. Marble has been used in construction for thousands of years. It was widely used by Greek and Roman sculptors and architects.
In the construction trade, the term “marble” is used for any massive, crystalline calcite rock useful as building stone. Marble is a metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite. Marble is typically not foliated, although there are exceptions. In geology, the term “marble” refers to metamorphosed limestone, but its use in stonemasonry more broadly encompasses un-metamorphosed limestone.

MARBLE THE EXTRAORDINARY BEAUTY OF NATURE
You’re facing the same conundrum that so many marble-loving homeowners have wrestled with: you love marble, but is it really worth the care and maintenance to keep it looking beautiful year after year?
Compared to other natural stones like granite and quartzite, marble is a relatively soft stone. It can etch if spills aren’t cleaned up right away, and it naturally develops a patina, or change in color due to oxidation, over time. This is one of the reasons manufacturers are developing engineered surfaces that resemble marble—some people simply don’t want to stress out every time a dinner guest puts their wine glass down without a coaster. But if you’re in love with the classic look of marble, there’s simply no alternative quite as beautiful as the real thing.
We’re here to put your mind at ease, and give you 5 solid reasons why you should make the commitment to a real marble countertop.
It can be sealed to add stain protection
One of the main concerns that homeowners have about choosing real marble for kitchen countertops is that will stain. While marble can be more susceptible to stains or etches from acidic foods and beverages, there are precautions that can be taken to help avoid this. Your countertop fabricator can ward off stains by applying an impregnating sealer that fills the pores just below the stone’s surface to slow the absorption of liquids, allowing more time to clean up spills. Today’s sealers are highly effective at preventing staining, without altering the look of the stone itself.
While no sealer can prevent etching, which is a dulling of the stone when it comes into contact with acidic materials, a high-quality sealer can go a long way in shielding your new marble from stains for years, or even decades. Ask your fabricator if they offer a multi-year stain warranty to help put your mind at ease.
Honed marble is just as gorgeous as polished, and you won’t have to worry about etching nearly as much. Honed marble has a more matte surface finish, meaning any dullness that may occur from a rogue lemon slice will be much less noticeable than it would be on a highly polished surface. Honed marble has a soft, satin finish rather than a glossy shine – a look that many homeowners actually prefer.
Some homeowners choose to install manufactured quartz countertops that look like marble products, which can be made to mimic natural stones like marble, believing that they will be easier to maintain. While an engineered material might be lower maintenance than marble, it will never have the same depth, unique patterns, and range of colors as natural stone.
Plus, when you install a true marble countertop or vanity, you have the opportunity to select a 100% unique slab. No other kitchen will have the exact same veining and characteristics that you have in yours.
If you’re a baker, you’ll be happy to learn that marble is one of the most heat resistant stones out there, and is much more heat resistant than a common competitor – resin-based engineered quartz. This quality makes marble a popular choice for fireplace surrounds as well as counters, islands, and vanities.
Natural stone increases the value of your home.
Stone countertops will increase the value of your home and appeal to potential buyers, if and when you’re ready to sell. Updated countertops made of natural stone are aesthetically beautiful and show that you’ve invested and cared for your home.
Talk to your countertop fabricator before you make a final decision. Most will be more than happy to give you a sample of the marble color you’re eyeing so you can take it home for a field test. Pour some lemonade on it, leave a coffee ring, drop a tomato slice – put your sample to the test to see how it reacts. Better yet, try a sample of both polished and honed marble to see the difference in performance.
Every homeowner should take their time to make sure they’re choosing a material that’s perfect for both their lifestyle and aesthetic. A Natural Stone Institute Accredited fabricator would be happy to answer any questions you might have about marble or any other stone material so you can feel confident in your final decision.
Anyone who’s ever watched Fredrik Eklund ooh and over a slab of it on Million Dollar Listing knows that Carrara Marble Obsession is a real thing. For almost a decade now, we’ve seen all kinds of kitchen countertops—Formica, laminate, granite—enthusiastically ripped up and replaced by the shiny white stone with subtle gray veining. But lately, interior designers are looking beyond the ubiquitous material and its siblings, Statuary and Calacatta Gold.
“While there’s nothing wrong with these marbles per se, there’s a tremendous breadth of expressive varieties out there that can add a significant amount of dynamism and personality to your project if you’re willing to think outside the box,” says Kevin Greenberg, founder of Space

Granite is a natural stone that is quarried in many countries around the globe. Granite and Quartzite are the names that are used interchangeably wherever stone tile and slabs are sold. True Granite is a porous, igneous rock that has any number of chemical compositions that include a quartz base. Quartzite is a metamorphic rock that has a higher percentage of quartz in its chemical makeup than granite does.
For the record, true quartzite is harder than true granite. But, don’t get too caught up in the name of the stone because regardless of which it is, geologically speaking, it has the same purpose and durability.
White Granite is harder to find than black or brown granite. All granite gets its name from the background color. Some white granite slabs have veins similar to marble while others may have a spattering of freckles in either brown, grey, black or red and may include a sprinkling of blue throughout.
Bhandari Marble Group classic granite products are available in all colors, all shapes, and finishing. Granite for all projects and other stones are also available. We deal in Granite which includes tiles, floor designs, flooring, images, India, prices, statues, suppliers, stones, etc.
Granite is a common type of felsic intrusive igneous rock that is granular and phaneritic in texture. Granites can be predominantly white, pink, or gray in color, depending on their mineralogy. The word granite comes from the Latin geranium, a grain, in reference to the coarse-grained structure of such a completely crystalline rock. Strictly speaking, granite is an igneous rock with between 20% and 60% quartz by volume, and at least 35% of the total feldspar consisting of alkali feldspar, although commonly the term granite is used to refer to a wider range of coarse-grained igneous rocks containing quartz and feldspar.

– True Granite is a porous, igneous rock that has any number of chemical compositions that include a quartz base.
– Quartzite is a metamorphic rock that has a higher percentage of quartz in its chemical makeup than granite does.
How to buy the best kitchen flooring for you
What types of kitchen flooring can you buy?
Natural stone
This includes limestone, travertine, granite and slate, is a popular choice thanks to its unique veining and available colours. Finishes can be tumbled, for a more aged, antique look, honed, for a modern matt surface or polished for a light-reflecting shine. Some stones will be more hardwearing than others.
Limestone, for example, can be etched by acids, such as fizzy drinks and descaler, so it’s a good idea to seal it initially then reseal it regularly to protect the surface. On the plus side, it’s durable, easy to clean and is UFH-compatible. However, if you’re standing for any length of time, it can make your legs ache. It’ll be cold in the winter without UFH, while softer stones may scratch and textured surfaces harbour dirt.
Timber
It’s best to avoid using solid wood in the working areas of a kitchen as the boards can shift and warp with humidity and UFH. Blocks, such as parquet, are more stable but should still be cleaned with a damp, rather than wet, mop. A better option is engineered boards – made with a core of HDF or plywood with a layer of real wood on top. These are more stable structurally and usually UFH-compatible as well.
Other options include naturally bacteria-resistant and eco-friendly cork and bamboo, but like all such woods, they’re easily dented. In most cases, wood can be repaired with gentle sanding and refinishing. Check if your boards come prefinished or if they have to be oiled or waxed on a regular basis.
Vinyl
Vinyl has come a long way since it first appeared in the kitchen and its new-gen hard incarnation, LVT (as opposed to sheet vinyl on a roll), is easy to clean, water-resistant and comfy underfoot. In some cases, it can even be laid straight over an existing floor. Most tiles and planks replicate wood or stone with a digital print and faux grout lines but you can also find coloured and patterned tiles. Choose a good-quality version and it’ll have a thick wear layer so it protects against damage and scratches. Many are UFH-compatible but check with the supplier.
Laying it properly is key to its longevity – the sub-floor will need to be even and you may have to fit underlay first or glue it in place, depending on the system. Be sure to add pads to stool or chair legs to prevent damage over time.
Laminate
If you’re choosing laminate, it pays to invest. While there are several budget options, they may not be especially hardwearing or water-resistant. Good-quality versions, however, come with realistic-looking designs and planks that can survive the odd spill. Laminate is made from a melamine back, an HDF core and a high-resolution image of wood, stone or tiles protected by a transparent wear layer. This makes it resistant to scuffs and scratches, although damage can’t be repaired.

Laminate can also sometimes feature a textured finish for extra realism. Even at the top end, it’s still a relatively affordable flooring option that won’t stain and won’t need sealing. Check its UFH-compatibility though, as not all of them will suit dry systems, and some require underlay.
Tiles
Ceramic, porcelain or terracotta tiles are another popular option. Porcelain is a harder version of ceramic, meaning that it’s low maintenance, hygienic, easy to clean and incredibly durable. It’s also UFH-compatible and is often available in covetable marble or reclaimed timber effects. Porcelain tiles are usually more expensive than ceramic. They’re cold without heating and can be uncomfortable for long periods of standing.
More affordable ceramic and terracotta tiles have many of the same qualities but can crack and chip more than porcelain. This is worse for ceramic tiles, as any chips will reveal the white base – terracotta is, at least, solid-bodied.

Lino or rubber
Lino – or under its brand name, Marmoleum, is a mix of linseed oil, cork, wood and resin as waterproof sheets or tiles. It’s durable, warm underfoot and hygienic but needs to be sealed once it’s laid. On the plus side, it’s easy to clean and UFH-compatible. On the negative? It can fade over time or develop a yellowish tinge.
Rubber tiles or sheets are equally comfy underfoot, and have the bonus of being water-resistant and robust. It can even be designed with studs for extra grip. On the downside, it can dent over time, and smooth finishes can be slippery. Rubber tiles need a smooth subfloor and you’ll need to check if your version is UFH-compatible.
Concrete and resin
Poured floors are ideal for creating a seamless finish but require more complex, and often costly, installation. Concrete needs sealing once it’s set to be water and stain-resistant, but it’s otherwise easy to clean and UFH-compatible. It’s resistant to chips and cracks. Resin is warm underfoot, waterproof, easy to clean and UFH-compatible but again, will need to be sealed to help protect it from scratches and stains. However, it can be refreshed with sanding and resealed if damaged.

The best kitchen flooring to buy
1. Aqualock 12mm Laminate Flooring French Grey Oak: The best flooring for speedy installation
Price: £27 per sq m | Buy now from UK Flooring Direct
If you’re fitting your flooring yourself or are simply pressed for time, then these laminate floorboards from Aqualock come with a DIY friendly click-in system that makes them super simple to fit. They’re guaranteed for 35 years and remain water-resistant for up to 48 hours, so you won’t have to worry if you’ve got leaks (at least, not about your flooring).
Another appeal of this flooring is its mixing of different tones of grey; this creates a dynamic look, unlike the flat, repetitive uniformity of other laminate floorboards. This colour mixing makes it easy to match with any kitchen colour palette and there’s also a UV-resistant coating that helps to prevent colour fading. The floor’s scratch resistant textured surface follows the ‘grain’ of the planks meaning that you can drop pretty much anything on this floor and it won’t get damaged, or lose its realistic appearance.
Key specs – Size: 138 x 19.1 x 1.2cm (HWD); Type: laminate; Features: 48 hour water resistance, UV resistance, scratch-resistant, textured surface, 35-year warranty; UFH-compatible: Yes (water only)
Buy now from UK Flooring Direct
2. Karndean Da Vinci CER13 Eisen: The best for family kitchens
Price: From £38 per sq m | Buy now from Flooring Hut
Inspired by weathered steel, Eisen LVT flooring doesn’t just tick the box for style credentials, it’s also perfect for a family kitchen. It’s super low maintenance, requiring a simple sweep and mop to stay spotless, plus it’s waterproof so there’s no need to worry about spills; just wipe and go. Should any part become damaged, individual tiles can be replaced, while its K-Guard+ PU coating creates a non-porous surface that gives germs, dirt or bacteria nowhere to hide.
Meanwhile, the blend of dark tones and subtle patterns ensures that it’ll complement a range of kitchen styles. You can personalise it with borders or light or dark grout strips, or have it laid in a staggered pattern. It’s pricier than some LVT, however, so if you’re covering a large space, you may want to opt for it in just in the working area.
Key specs – Size: 30.5 x 45.7 x 0.3cm (HWD); Type: LVT; Features: 0.7mm wear layer, bevelled edge, lifetime guarantee; UFH-compatible: Yes (if insulated)
Buy now from Flooring Hut
3. Topps Tiles Woodeves Grey tiles: The best kitchen flooring on a budget
Price: £20 per sq m | Buy now from Topps Tiles
Embodying all that’s great about modern ceramic flooring, the Woodeves range of timber-effect tiles comes with a tactile surface and a realistic grain pattern, giving it a premium look far beyond its price tag. This mellow grey colourway is ideal for mixing and matching with encaustic-style tiles or co-ordinating with a simple Shaker kitchen in a deeper tone.
The tiles need very little maintenance once installed, and aside from not using highly alkaline or acidic cleaners, can be kept spotless with a simple sweep and mop.
Key specs – Size: 57 x 19 x 0.9cm (HWD); Type: ceramic; Features: also available in Oak; UFH-compatible: Yes

4. The Natural Wood Floor Company Oak Aged Parquet Oiled: The best flooring for a classic kitchen
Price: £63 per sq m | Buy now from the Natural Wood Floor Company
Parquet wood flooring is a great way to introduce subtle pattern, but while solid blocks will be less prone to warping than planks, they’re still not recommended for use with underfloor heating. This engineered parquet floor is UFH-compatible, however, thanks to a ply backing with an oak veneer glued on top – giving the appearance of a solid wood floor but with greater stability.
Tumbled edges and a reclaimed appearance means it’ll look like it’s been part of the fabric of your home for decades, while its pre-oiled finish enhances the natural beauty and knots of the wood, and it can be stuck down to a concrete screed or ply subfloor. This one will take a little maintenance – It’s a good idea to re-oil it regularly in high traffic areas, and the kitchen always qualifies.
Key specs – Size: 40 x 10 x 1.9cm (HWD); Type: engineered wood; Features: tongue and groove profile; UFH-compatible: Yes
Buy now from the Natural Wood Floor Company
5. Beswick Stone Keynes Mix Limestone: The longest-lasting floor
Price: £41 per sq m | Buy now from Beswick Stone
While kitchen floors tend to become worn and fade with age, a hard-wearing stone floor simply improves to last a lifetime, making it the best value for money buy. This Keynes Mix limestone is a great example, featuring tiles in two neutral shades – a warm honey beige and soft grey – for a unique multi-toned floor that blends well with different kitchen styles and colours.
It’s available in 40cm widths and random lengths as well as an opus pattern that comprises four different sizes for an interesting layout. However, it’s worth noting that the tumbled edges can mean thicker grout lines that attract dirt. It’s essential to seal this floor and use a cleaner designed for natural stone products. You might also want to pair it with UFH for comfort, as limestone can be very cool to the touch.
Key specs – Size: [four tile sizes for opus pattern] 60 x 40 x 1.5cm, 40 x 40 x 1.5cm, 40 x 20 x 1.5cm, 19.7 x 19.7 x 1.5cm (all HWD); Type: natural stone; Features: chalky matte finish; UFH-compatible: Yes
Buy now from Beswick Stone
6. CRL Stone Ceralsio Calacatta Gris Polished tiles: The best low-maintenance floor
Price: From £67 per sq m | Buy now from Ceralsio
For those who love the look of marble but not the sealing and care that comes with stone, there are Ceralsio porcelain tiles. Sintered at a temperature of more than 1,200°C, these are hard-wearing, non-porous, scratch and stain-resistant and even UV stable, meaning you can continue your floor onto a patio for an inside-outside living feel.
What really sets these tiles apart, however, is the surface. It’s printed using a ‘Full Digital’ system, which means the pattern is unique and unrepeatable from tile to tile. This sets it apart from other marble look-a-like tiles, which can appear suspiciously similar to each other when viewed en-masse on the kitchen floor. You might need to budget a bit more for this class of flooring, but given its easy cleaning credentials and general imperviousness to everything, it’ll save you plenty of time in return.
Key specs – Size: from 150 x 150 x 0.6cm (HWD); Type: porcelain; Features: natural or polished finish, impact-resistant; UFH-compatible: Yes
Buy now from Ceralsio
7. Kahrs European Naturals Collection, Oak Hampshire at John Lewis: The best flooring for natural character
Price: £67 per sq m | Buy now from John Lewis
Despite a slew of lookalikes, real wood is the only choice for some. Warm, comfy underfoot and with a wear layer that’s sliced from a single piece of oak, these matt lacquered engineered boards have a soft-polished sheen that’s designed to make the most of the grain, knots and cracks, not to mention the lovely light to dark brown colour variations. However, these boards give you more than just a clever construction – each has been specially shaped so it locks into the next, allowing it to be installed quickly with strong, glue-free joints.
This floor will need a bit more maintenance than some floors, requiring oiling once in place and spills wiped-up straight away. It also needs a well-wrung mop rather than a wet-cleaning, along with an annual re-oil. The effect is worth it, though, when you see how good these look.
Key specs – Size: 242 x 18.7 x 1.5cm (HWD); Type: engineered wood; Features: 3.5mm wear layer, 30-year warranty; UFH-compatible: Yes (with moisture barrier)
Buy now from John Lewis

Regency Villa, Kensington
Regency Villa, Kensington Home Extension, English House, UK Architecture Development, Design
Regency Villa in Kensington, London
16 Nov 2020
Kensington Regency Villa Property
Design: Cox Architects
Location: 21 Young Street, Kensington, south west London, England, UK
Finding space for an elegant new staircase unlocked the potential of this run-down Regency Villa in London’s Kensington district.
Key Challenges
Cox Architects’ clients needed light, light and MORE LIGHT!
‘THE PIT’. This is what the clients called the shallow yard at the back of the house they had purchased!
THE STAIRCASE was taking up valuable floor space and complicating the plan, whilst the small side wing to the building was underused and disfunctional. We therefore needed to achieve planning consent in a Conservation Area to enlarge the side wing and thereby unlock the potential of the house!
The Solutions
LIGHT: A 7m long frameless structural glass skylight was used to flood the stairways with natural light . Walk-on glass hallways ensure that light filters down to all principal floors. An external walk-on glass balcony prevented overshadowing to the rooms below.
‘THE PIT’: We used 40sq m of glass micro mosaic tiles on a modelled substrate to bounce light down to the lowest floors and provide a subtle shimmering backdrop to the main living spaces in the house.
THE STAIRCASE: Planning consent was achieved to extend and raise the side wing… and the new staircase became the signature note for the entire house.
The Brief
We were challenged to transform a dark, tightly enclosed house into an open, lightfilled four bedroom family home. At the same time the clients wanted to maximise additional floor area (with a new basement), modernise all services and massively improve the house’s energy performance long term.

Properties of Indian and Italian Marble
Pros & Cons of Marble
While the most significant advantage of marble is its aesthetic appeal, it does come with a lot of drawbacks.
Manufacturer of Imported Marble – Statuario White Italian Marble, Black Marquina Marble Polished 20MM
Imported marble is one of the best heat resistant marble, its oldest and best quality Imported marble. Imported marble excellent features just like fine finish, smooth polish, and aesthetic look make its demand in the market.  We are direct from our own mines and manufacturing plant in leading marble city Kishangarh Rajasthan India.
Marble is a porous stone and is prone to stains. Chemically, it is made of calcium carbonate, a basic salt that can react with an acidic material. That’s why citrus juices can corrode the surface and make it susceptible to small pits. For this reason, granite is preferred over marble for kitchen countertops.
As marble is a natural stone, deeper layers of the stone could have fissures and cracks which may not be visible on the surface. As a result, the slabs you buy may sometimes come with a high percentage of wastage.
Marble is prone to scratches and heavy or sharp objects should not be moved on the floor. Unless you have experts laying the stone, it may not be done perfectly. Over a period of time, marble can wear away and develop hairline cracks due to weight or pressure. This is more common in Italian marble. However, many people feel this adds to the charm as the stone ages. Marble is more expensive than granite, vitrified, or ceramic tiles.
Imported marble, Indian Marble and Italian Marble Costs
Marble from Italy is among the finest in the world and is accordingly priced—with the cheapest varieties starting from Rs 150 per square foot, and the more exclusive, fine stones costing even Rs 4000 for a square foot. Creamy Calacatta marble with its feathery veins and Carrara are classified as Group A. These are available only at the lower depths of quarries. They are highly-priced as they have very few fissures running through the stone. Indian marble is much more cost-effective, with the lower-end prices starting at Rs 150 per square foot.
When calculating the costs, you will also need to include the prices of cutting the slabs to size and laying it in your required pattern. This will come to around 150 per square foot inclusive of the fixing material. Marble inlay work requires very specialized craftsmen to do the work. Depending on how intricate the design is, costs can go up to Rs 2,500 per square foot. Finally, the marble needs to be polished with fine stones of carborundum and buffed and sealed with tin oxide. This polishing costs approximately Rs 40 per square foot.
Trending Ideas in Marble:
Marble is primarily used in flooring and cladding in upmarket homes, office lobbies, and hotels. It is not preferred for external use, especially not in polluted areas, as it can get damaged. Marble has always traditionally been used in sculptures and artwork – like this serene seated Buddha. It is also used on tabletops, in mantelpieces, and in smaller pieces of décor like trays, soap dispensers, and so on.
Cleaning Tips for Marble:
Marble is a stone that requires a high degree of maintenance to keep it looking good. Its porous nature makes it very prone to scratches and stains, and such imperfections show up all too well against a polished surface. Here are some maintenance tips:
Acidic substances like vinegar, lime, and tomato will stain the marble, so wipe up any spills immediately.
Use diluted organic cleaners that are environmentally friendly and do not contain any chemicals.
Seal the surface regularly with a sealant that forms a protective barrier. When water stops beading on the surface, it’s time to re-seal.
Every few years, marble should be re-polished with carborundum stone and tin oxide, to restore the surface luster.
The water used for mopping the floor should not be hard or contain any chemicals.
To conclude, Italian marble, as well as imported marble and Indian marble, has its own niche for interiors and exteriors. Though Italian marbles have gained popularity over the time Indian marbles are also becoming popular in the same pattern these days. Therefore choose the right marble based on your style and preference.

Botanical DIY Wedding at Victoria Baths in Manchester
 BUDGET £20 – 25K
Sarah and Mike created a DIY wedding at Victoria Baths in Manchester last autumn. The day kicked off with a church ceremony followed by a vintage Fiat 500 ride to their unique reception venue. To fit in with this botanical styled day they opted for a sage colour scheme and the bridesmaids all looked gorgeous in their dresses. The bride teamed her white hydrangea bouquet with a stunning strapless dress which she layered under a beautiful lace top for the ceremony. Lots of greenery, DIY styling and a macramé wall hanging all made for the most perfect relaxed vibe throughout the reception, the evening entertainment certainly did not disappoint either with a photo booth, a giant Jenga game and lots of pizza, what’s not to love! All of this incredible family fun is captured by Esme Whiteside.
                 WHAT MADE OUR DAY UNIQUE
“My Grandmother loved Victoria Baths and when we first started planning our wedding we both loved the idea of having a relaxed wedding there, however, after discussing with our family we ended up booking a different venue and date for 2020. In June 2019 we felt like we were planning a wedding for other people and decided to cancel our original date and venue and book one of the few remaining dates at Victoria Baths for that year, giving us three months to plan! Everyone thought that we were crazy but it was one of the best decisions we made. Our day was unique because it reflected us as a couple and the venue meant so much to us. We made lots of the games, backdrops, macrame bunting and dressed the venue exactly how we wanted to which also helped to make our day feel so special because we had created it all Esme (Photographer) was amazing the entire process of planning our wedding and so supportive and helpful! The Birdie Photobooth was so much fun and Vicky (Hair) was amazing! All of our suppliers was great and we would highly recommend them. – Sarah & Mike
Victoria Baths
The Victoria Baths in Manchester was this couples first choice when they started to plan their day and was extra special as the venue meant so much to the couple. It is such a unique venue and steeped in history with the beautiful tiles and features which really helped this bride and grooms vision come to life, the perfect backdrop to their day. To make the day all the more special this couple also decided to create the decor and games themselves, they spent the day before the wedding decorating the venue to make sure it was all perfect!
INSPIRATION & STYLING
“Botanical garden! Botanical garden! Botanical garden! We have so many plants in our house and lots of wooden features so we wanted our wedding to reflect this. We decided not to have floral decor but to have lots of greenery and a relaxed vibe. We created a games pool and wanted to incorporate macramé features, with a white, green and grey colour scheme. Victoria Baths is a stunning venue and its beautiful tiles and features helped to make our vision come to life. Having acoustic music in the church was beautiful. As soon as I heard the band start to sing I started to cry and felt so much calmer once I got to the top of the aisle! We loved being able to have all of our huge family and friends together” – Sarah & Mike
This bride and grooms advice is to enjoy every minute! Do it exactly how you want, it’s your special day so don’t try to please others as its impossible! If you are after some tips and advice for your wedding planning we have a great podcast to have a listen too. Maybe you’re halfway through planning… this episode is still for you. Treat it as a gentle reminder of what you might have left to do. And if you’re newly engaged then enjoy our rundown of what to do once you’re engaged.

Installing The Rear Sliding Door
Creating a good connection with the garden is a key goal for any self builder – the question is, do you achieve that with sliders or bifolds?
We faced that conundrum with the Build It House, and the original concept drawings showed bifolds, which concertina back to give you almost totally clear garden access when open.
The downside, of course, is that there are more panels than with sliders – so the latter gives you a better glass-to-frame ratio. In the end, that’s what swung the decision for us.
We’ve gone for the Build It Award-winning theEDGE2.0 thermally broken aluminium slider from IDSystems, on a supply-and-fit basis. It offers slim sightlines of just 20mm and good performance for weather tightness, security and energy efficiency – all at an appealing price point for such a high-spec product.
A long-established UK glazed door supplier, IDSystems is still family owned and has a knack for innovation, so was a natural fit for this part of our project.
Ordering the slider
I’d assumed we’d need a fixed frame at one end of the run, with the doors sliding on a triple track (one of which would be redundant). But David Clarke, IDSystems’ marketing manager, suggested a plant-on panel could give a better aesthetic – largely because it would allow for a narrower twin track and a thinner external frame.
1. The IDSystems install team grind cut the last few bits of high concrete
It was an easy decision to go with the plant-on: the fact is sliding doors are kept closed most of the year, so it’s all about maximising that view through the glass. When they are open, theEdge2.0’s panels will stack flush, keeping sightlines nice and slim.
While we could have colour-matched the unit with our windows, because those are in timber rather than aluminium, the hue would never be exactly the same. So we decided on RAL 7016 anthracite grey, which looks sleek and will blend into the garden setting.
2. The DPM is taped and glued onto the door cill
The double-glazed panels have low-e toughened glass on the inner pane, and 8.8mm clear laminated glass externally to deliver on safety and security. Once we’d finalised the design, IDSystems’ contracts team got in touch with drawings and documentation to sign.
No stone is left unturned at this stage: after all, it’s not in anybody’s interests if the install team turns up on site to find that the doors don’t fit properly. Among other details, the six PDFs I received included in-depth notes on what to check to ensure the structural openings are correctly prepared.
By now, most of the work was already done – and I’d been in touch with IDSystems at key points to ensure they were happy. The ICF closers to the sides of the openings provide fixing points. At the base the track can be screwed directly into the concrete, and into timber at the head.
3. Assembling the frame took less than an hour
The few bits left to do at our end included cutting the insulating formwork back to the polystyrene closers, chipping out the corners of the opening where the concrete pour was slightly over, and getting the screed in.
With a five-week lead time between order and delivery of the doors, there was plenty of time to sort this – although the final bits of trimming happened on fitting day.
Final preparations
When IDSystems’ install team, Paul Shorter and Mark Williamson, arrived on site, the first thing we did was check out the structural opening to make sure it was as expected. Pretty quickly, we noticed a discrepancy – the screed had been poured to a depth of 55mm (rather than the intended 40mm).
4. Ensuring everything’s level and square is crucial – otherwise it just won’t run smoothly. This stage is probably the most time-consuming
It looks like Screedflo did this to marry up with the insulation and underfloor heating build-up in the WC, which makes sense. But this was the first Scott and I had heard about it! Thankfully, we had enough space at the head to raise the sliders up a little higher without compromising the look – and as we’ve not yet specified the patio make-up, we can easily accommodate this.
It does mean we need to cement fill or dry-pack beneath the bottom track. I’d imagined we would fit the track so it’s perfectly flush with the tiled finished floor level (FFL), which will sit 17mm above the screed. But Paul suggested going for a 3mm-4mm lip.
5. One of the glass panels is lifted into position. It’s then clipped into place with special beading
This is just enough to reduce the amount of debris that might get kicked into the running channel, but not so high it becomes a trip hazard (apparently anything up to 7mm is fine). What’s more, apparently if you go completely flush, the tile grout lines are much more likely to crack.
The next big question was how deep the setback should be (ie how far back the door should sit in the external wall). A twin track is much thicker than a standard window frame – so it’s never going to match up completely – while the two outermost panels are at different points within the frame depth (in fact, the plant-on is slightly proud).
6. Silicone sealant is run where needed, before the whole unit is wiped down using a special cleaning solution
It’s the same with any slider, of course, but accentuated where we have timber cladding on one side and render on the other. We agreed that the best visual effect would be achieved by lining up the plant-on so that the full thickness of the larch cladding is on show.
Installing the doors
With the details nailed down, IDSystems’ fitters cracked on with the install. Paul and Mark worked as a team, one putting together the frame segments, the other prepped the bottom of the opening with spacers and clearing any last remaining areas of high concrete.
The damp proof membrane (DPM) is incorporated into the system – taped and glued to the cill – rather than being laid into the base of the opening. Once the full 4,208mm (H) x 2,488mm (H) aluminium frame was assembled, the guys lifted it in and got to work aligning it. Everything needs to be pretty much perfectly square, within a tolerance of maybe a millimetre or two, to ensure the running mechanisms operate smoothly.
Then there was the issue of getting the setback perfectly right to show the doors and the cladding (not yet fitted alongside the door) in their best light – which had Paul nervously quadruple-checking dimensions before the screws went in. I’m delighted to say he got it spot on!
The glass panels on a slider like this weigh in at over 100kg each, so they’re added on site after the frame is squared, levelled and fixed. The team fits the empty panels first to check the operation and locking systems, before inserting the glass. Interestingly, the doors actually slide at their smoothest when they’re fully assembled and heavier.
The final piece of the puzzle was to clip in the beading and re-test the lock positions (which Paul did by attaching strips of masking tape to check the alignment of the multi-point). A few minor adjustments later, and our glazed slider was fully installed – all in less than a day.
Handover
IDSystems’ literature asks for the owner to be present for a handover – and I have to say it was a useful exercise.
Paul went through the long-term maintenance instructions and gave clear guidance on how to care for the sliders over the coming days and weeks on site. Your first thought is to cover the doors, for instance, but you need to give them 48 hours for the seals to fully dry before doing so.
They shouldn’t be operated for at least 24 hours either (cue all keys being taken off site) and, once you do open them, it’s a good idea to protect the track to avoid construction debris getting in there and potentially damaging the mechanisms.
There’s a bit of work for us to do to finish it off. For instance, we need to fill in a small bit of screed, which we were expecting – we deliberately left it a little short so that it wouldn’t get in the way of the install. When we do that, we’ll need to ensure we wrap IDSystems’ DPM up the inside of the frame.
Other first fix joinery
There’s plenty more going on at the Build It House site to keep things ticking over at this stage of the project.
Here’s a quick look at some of the carpentry jobs that, while small, can add up to a sizeable chunk of time:
Door linings
Decisions abound as you get into the first fix phase of your project – and one that will have a big impact on the finished look is the internal doors, which will be supplied by JB Kind. We initially planned to use pre-assembled doorsets, but the lead times were longer than we’d hoped and there are less size options than standard doors.
Either way, we still needed to install the liners. These sit slightly proud of the face of the studs, leaving enough space so that the boards and plaster skim will give a flush finish. We’ll look at our internal door choices in more depth next month.
Basement stairs
We’re holding off fitting our feature staircases for as long as possible, with the aim of protecting them against the dirt and grime that’s inevitable on a building site, But there’s still work to do at first fix stage. Kloepping TSS, our stair provider, was recently on site to install the aluminium profiles to give a fixing point for our basement flight (this image shows Meinholf Kloepping tapping in for the fixings).
We need to get this done now, as it will be covered with plasterboard on the inside face. Meinholf’s visit to site revealed some of the stud walls in the basement needed to move slightly to allow enough space at the bottom of the flight to meet Building Regulations. Drewett & Hunt got this sorted within a couple of hours.
Pocket door systems
This style of door can maximise floorspace, as you don’t need to account for leafs swinging into rooms or corridors. We’re using pocket doors in two key locations: the opening between the hallway and snug; and from the master bedroom into its adjoining rooms (a walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite).
Due to the open-plan nature of the ground floor, we need FD30 fire-rated doors at the snug. We could only find one specialist, Eclisse, that currently offers an FD30 pocket mechanism; happily, they’ve been very proactive and came on site to oversee the installation.
Window boards
We’ve opted for pre-primed MDF window boards for most of the house, with a bullnose (gently rounded) front edge that will soften the contemporary edges of much of our decor. Affordable, widely-available and great for painting, they’re a de facto choice for many self builders.
They need to be installed prior to plastering to ensure the best finish. They’re simply cut to shape, packed with spacers to get a level finish, foamed to guarantee airtightness and nail-gunned into position.

How to create a low maintenance garden
A low maintenance garden is ideal if you don’t really like gardening, or if you truly never have the time to garden. Less is more when it comes to low maintenance gardens, and it’s a style that works with all sizes, especially small gardens because you’re already working with a compact space.
Want to know how to make your outside space work for you and not the other way around? Here are some simple steps to a sure-fire, easy garden.
You're reading: How to create a low maintenance garden
Golden rules
1. To get a truly low maintenance garden, there’s one simple, but radical thing to do – limit the number of different plants you have. The fewer you have the lower the maintenance will be. Try to stick to between 5 and 10 varieties – think swathes of rudbeckias or sedums or lines of bamboo or tall grasses. You’ll get to know what care and attention they need very well, and you’ll be able to spot weeds more easily and be better able to deal with them quickly.
2. Lawns need regular work and weekly cutting, so pave it, gravel it, deck it – any of these will be less work than grass. Paving takes just a sweep a week to look after, no slogging up and down with a mower. However, if you want to keep the lawn, make it a really simple shape. A rectangular lawn can be cut in minutes whilst an irregular shaped lawn can take 10 times longer.
3. The more hard landscaping you have in your garden, the lower the workload will be. When designing a low maintenance garden, aim to reduce the size of the planted areas in your outdoor space. For instance, take the beds back towards the boundaries and replace them with paving if possible – a path around the garden works well.
Tumblr media
There’s also a rule of thumb – the ‘harder’ the hard landscaping the easier it will be to look after. So slate and slabs are less work than decking and gravel. The decking will need regular cleaning and the gravel will need to be kept in place and raked, whereas slabs can be left.
4. For beds, try top-dressing them. A good thick layer of gravel, slate or chippings will help to suppress weeds and make everything look smarter.
5. Whether you’re putting in fences or buying garden furniture, have a look at hardwood rather than softwood. Softwood will need more maintenance.
6. Always have plenty of accessible storage in the garden. The easier it is to put things away and access them, the lower the workload will be. Investing in a small, narrow garden shed is a good idea if you have the space.

7. Garden maintenance really comes down to outdoor housework, so try to make those jobs as easy as possible. Keep the brush and pan outside, with a handy place to put anything that needs to be discarded. Again, these essentials can be stored in a shed.
8. Make sure you have a lovely place to sit. If gardening is not your thing at least make sure you can enjoy your space by lounging in it. And that’s the main aim of the low maintenance gardener – to just kick back and relax in the garden. There some amazing ways to do just that: check out day beds, garden sofas and hanging egg chairs for a completely luxurious lounge.

Perfect plants
There are lots of plants to avoid if you want a low maintenance garden. That means no annuals and tender plants, so no bedding plants, no vegetables and no sowing of seeds. Also, avoid plants which need staking; delphiniums are the most common offenders, and you should avoid plants which act as slug or rabbit food; hostas are the worst for this.
Don’t put in climbers, they bring a surprising workload. Climbers are either self-clinging, like ivy, and will quickly run out of control, or they need support and will need endless tying in. So what’s left? Shrubs, preferably evergreen like daphne, lavender, holly and euonymus.
Tumblr media

A real treat is to find ready-planted pots, these are the sorts of things you can just bring home from the shop and place in the garden – job done.
And finally, perennial weeds are an enormous source of work in gardens – these are the ones with deep roots which seem to get into everything and always come back; things like bindweed, ground elder and knotweed. The mistake is to just keep attacking the tops; if you have any of these weeds it’s much better to take everything out of the bed and get rid of every last bit before continuing.

Seasonal changes and what to avoid
In a low maintenance garden it is possible to have fake grass at a reasonable price, if you install it yourself. There’s plenty of advice on suppliers’ websites about how to do this. Changing your lawn to artificial grass will immediately make the garden look smart and seriously lower your maintenance hours – but do bear in mind this will not provide a habitat for wildlife.
Tumblr media
You could also install a watering system; it doesn’t have to be anything complicated. A leaky hose system is just a hose from the tap and then a connector to a hose which lets the water seep out across the beds. It’s simple, inexpensive to install, works really well, and saves so much time.
Other low maintenance garden ideas includes arches, arbours and pergolas – theses are all easy to install and they don’t have to be hugely expensive. The great thing about these structures is that they instantly transform an area and, most importantly, don’t add to the garden maintenance.

And get hold of some stainless steel troughs and feeders to use as planters; this will create a modern and architectural look in your garden. Get ones large enough to avoid the need for continual watering of smaller containers.
Water features are lovely but you need to look after it pretty constantly with cleaning and clearing. Unless you want some extra work it’s not something to have in a low maintenance garden.
And remember, gardens should be real sources of pleasure; they shouldn’t have to be a burden. The biggest mistake of all is not doing anything about your outdoor space. A bit of thought and effort up front can mean that you’ll really enjoy your garden.

Hey - Pat from StarterStory.com here with another interview.Today's interview is with Nick Griffiths of Any Old Lights, a brand that sells vintage lightingSome stats:Product: Vintage LightingRevenue/mo: $35,000Started: May 2014Location: Fowey, Cornwall, UKFounders: 2Employees: 3Hello! Who are you and what business did you start?I’m Nick Griffiths. For 25 years I was a freelance journalist in London; now I run Any Old Lights, selling vintage nautical and industrial lighting, online and from a shop by the sea in Cornwall, UK. You never quite know where life will take you! We’re always on the hunt for quality lighting that’s a little different from the norm. Much of the good stuff is up to 70 years old and supplies are inevitably going to dry up. So we also created our own Revivals brand of lighting. When a light looks like it’s disappearing from circulation, we create our own version, with little twists.Noticeably cheaper than the originals, these Revivals lights are very popular with both domestic and commercial customers on a budget. We also sell higher-end products like our very own Lighthouse, which I dreamed up one evening during a walk along the cliffs near our home.Given Any Old Lights’ strong nautical theme, I couldn’t resist delving into the maritime antiques and curios market - packed with salted history and stunning designs - so we also source and sell anything from vintage ships’ bells to brass engine-order telegraphs. Our vintage ships’ clocks are incredibly popular, especially with American customers.Any Old Lights has won awards along the way and keeps growing in popularity, selling worldwide to anyone from high-street giants and celebrity bars to Middle Eastern hotel groups, turning over last year £250,000.What's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?I must have written millions of words in my lifetime - for magazines, newspapers and my books - and I loved every minute of it. But kids come along and maybe the city life isn’t ideal for them growing up.So in Summer 2011, my family moved to Cornwall, a delightful and quirky county that takes up the final chunk bottom-left of the map of England, where my wife, Sinead, had grown up. Now the kids have beaches and boats and crabbing. And I had…...To reboot my entire career.I took a course in WordPress web design and started building websites. One was for a fledgling online vintage lighting business, set up by my friend, Patrick. I came up with the name, built the site, and within weeks we had orders coming in. Including one to Hong Kong! We were gobsmacked.Patrick asked if I wanted to become a joint director, and in the absence of any better ideas, I said Yes. I knew nothing about lighting (though I have a degree in Electrical Engineering, I could barely wire a plug), less so vintage lighting. I remember when we opened a pop-up shop during our first winter in business, people coming in, discussing vintage lighting brands, and me nodding sagely (blankly), thinking: I’m going to need to learn a lot of stuff. And I did. That’s the beauty of starting a business - you have to cram knowledge into your aching grey matter, day in, day out. And it’s really exciting. So new and different and initially bewildering. But cracking it is a major buzz.Patrick left Any Old Lights early in 2016 and I gained a new co-director: my wife! These days, I am actually an expert in vintage lighting - a veritable mine of information! Who’d have thought it? Certainly not me.Take us through the process of designing, prototyping, and manufacturing your first product.Aside from our Revivals versions of vintage lights, cast in metals, we’ve also been looking to the future. And that future has to involve acrylics (recyclable) and LED.That future is RetroFutures, by Any Old Lights. These are laser-cut acrylic lights with integrated LED COB (chip-on-board) rings, running off 12V so incredibly economical to run and eco-friendly. Our very first pattern - we call it Cage - was based on the design of a vintage Lemar nautical wall light (from which we’d already removed the wall-arm and added a hook to create a Revivals pendant light). You can see the two side-by-side here. Our Cage has been through numerous iterations during its year in development. Originally it had a hook, same as the original, and a light bulb, and screws holding it together - all gone. Our designer is a local colleague, and we have a profit-share agreement once we start selling, otherwise, the collective expense would have been beyond us.I’ve had custom parts created, having chanced upon an excellent, trustworthy supplier of electronics in China. (That was a major concern - it seems such a lottery given so many options, and I got lucky.) But we’re keen to create the light itself in the UK, and I’ve been getting quotes for acrylic supplies, laser-cutting, assembly and packaging, such that we’re geared for the RetroFutures launch in January 2018.For market research, we took a bunch of prototypes to a major London hospitality industry show in October, on the advice of a mentor, where we listened to experts and were deeply heartened by the positive response. Annoyingly, the timing was all wrong for us as we weren’t ready to supply, so bar gaining contacts we wasted our money. That poor advice aside, we’ve taken advantage of plenty of free mentoring by local business organisations - funded by the European Union and devastatingly already disappearing thanks to the lunatic Brexit vote - who’ve advised on all aspects of our task, from design protection to wholesale pricing.Putting this project together has cost us thousands - we’ll crowdfund our first 100 RF lights to help recoup - stressed me out more than ever before, and we’ve no idea whether it will fly. But I’d far rather try new things than coast along. Watch this space.Describe the process of launching the business. We launched online back in May 2014 - seems like a lifetime ago - with a few vintage ships’ lights sourced from a UK supplier. There was no fanfare. When I went into partnership with Patrick, we put in £9,000 each of our own money, and have never taken out a loan or overdraft since. I feel if you get to that stage, you’re in the wrong business. The banks have zero interest in actually helping small businesses - likewise this government.Come winter 2014 we were offered a pop-up shop in a local coffee shop that closed for the down season. We took it. Who wouldn’t? And it went really well: we sold things and got to meet our customers. It made us realise we needed a retail space. So we moved into a shop-share in a 13th century ground-floor space, where the ceilings were so low I moved like Quasimodo. (One time I was serving a customer and hadn’t realised I’d stood up directly beneath a light shade, which I was effectively wearing as a hat. Oh, the japes.)Come February 2018, we moved again, into a former boutique with tired decor. I ripped off the boarding and found 1920s tiling throughout the shop, which turned out to be a former butchers. Same outside, having scraped off layers of paint. It really fits our vibe and we’ve increased takings year-on-year by some 25 per cent.Going back to the beginnings, then: the key to early success is working hard and learning fast. We made mistakes aplenty and always vowed never to repeat them. Sometimes we succeeded! And be prepared to go with your gut and take risks. Where’s the fun (actual genuine terror) otherwise?Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers?Key to our success has been good SEO. I read everything I could about the subject - too often finding conflicting advice - and dived in.Our website uses WordPress with WooCommerce, and the Yoast SEO plugin is a must. I also lashed out around £2000 to hire an SEO specialist; that was a couple of years ago and everything they instigated already seems to be out of date.So I’ve just completed another, current SEO course, which tiresomely calls for a complete site rewrite - can’t be helped. The dividends will be reaped. It’s all about diving into Google: Google My Business, Google Tag Manager, Google Search Console, Google Keyword Planner - all four are imperatives. (He set them up for me, or I’d still be gibbering in a corner, imagining little green men flying overhead.)Did you know that there’s no such thing as “top of Google” any longer? Everyone - including me and you, when we check - sees slightly different ranking dependent upon our search history, location, etc (don’t ask me what the etc is). The only true check of keyword ranking is Google Search Console. So I take my obvious keywords - Vintage Nautical Lighting, Vintage Bulkhead Light… - and run them through Keyword Planner, to find which is the most popular similar term, as well as checking alternatives I can pepper around my text. A blog is a great way of sneaking keywords in on a regular basis. No one reads the things, so be bold. Just don’t cram keywords - it has to read naturally or Google will penalise you.I’ve spent nothing on Facebook ads and precious little on Google Ads, which I’ve always found impenetrable (and Google’s documentation, still more so). However, the recent SEO course tutor suggested it’s very hard for a small business to survive on organic traffic alone - heartening that we have done - so I’m lashing out more on hiring a specialist to help me negotiate the Google Ads maze. So much cash can be wasted on ill-conceived online advertising, the expert hire is a no-brainer, unless you have the time and knowledge to learn yourself.Unfortunately, my demographic missed out on internet teaching at school, so the jargon is pure Greek to me.Obviously, we also maintain Facebook (750 followers), Twitter (1825 followers) and more recently started focussing on Instagram (735 followers), alongside LinkedIn and email lists. Social media is both a blessing and a curse - don’t spread yourself too thinly.Remember Google+? Thought not. In desperation to keep up with the Googleses, I spent hours setting up an account and populating it - only to get one follower (the only other person on Google+). I set up Pinterest, too, and allowed it to lay fallow.Pick your weapons and focus on those: we’re keenest on Facebook and Instagram. But still there are only so many hours in the day and there are few of us.Plus it’s bloody boring. Don’t beat yourself up.We use ActiveCampaign, which has way more flexibility than MailChimp, though it’s paid for. We’d built up decent databases of well over 2000 subscribers, which GDPR helpfully massacred in one afternoon. So we build again.I tried eBay selling, but it’s not right for our quality products - there are too many cheap, inferior imitators - and I’ve looked into Amazon but again worry it’s not a great match, for the same reason. Best sales alternative to the website for us has been Etsy, which suits our quality vintage vibe. How are you doing today and what does the future look like? The fact that we’ve barely used online advertising and its remarketing capabilities, but are now gearing up to do so, surely bodes well, as it can only boost sales. We turned over £250,000 last year, with net gains rising from a £7K loss in our first year of trading to £20K profit last financial year. Over the year the split is roughly 50:50 online vs shop, with the shop doing best in the summer when the tourists are here, and vice versa in the winter when they aren’t.Overheads are a concern in this business, which requires a large warehouse space, as well as our bricks-and-mortar shop and its staff. Launching RetroFutures, coupled with online advertising and the building of our brands, we plan to take us to the next level.Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous? This vintage lighting business is a very traditional business, with heavy physical products that need shipping great distances, as well as the warehousing. It’s been a steep learning curve fraught with overheads and naive errors.Finding trusted suppliers and a decent shipping agent has been key to our success. We’ve been burnt in the past - those madly heavy portholes were supposed to have been stripped and polished, my friend - so we dump the deadwood and keep the gold dust. That’s often trial and error, so we make small sample orders from new suppliers and build slowly.Maintaining stock numbers is a constant quandary. If we have an unexpected run on one pattern, we’re looking six weeks minimum for a restock - production and shipping - and equally, we don’t want unsold stockpiling up in the warehouse.I’d rather go Out of Stock, as customers are often happy with an alternative, though there’s a happy medium. It’s all about identifying your popular items and ordering big, and trimming off the less popular patterns. Identify and maintain the core. What platform/tools do you use for your business? Our website runs on WordPress and WooCommerce, and we also sell online via Etsy. WooCommerce plugins such as WooWaitlist (notifying a customer when you’re back in stock) and Recover Abandoned Cart have been very useful. There are plenty more if you do a little Googling around your specific requirements.ActiveCampaign, I’ve mentioned - you can use it to set up email automation, as well as creating the usual lists and campaigns. Worth a look. And I’ve just started experimenting with the free live chat app, tawk.to, on our website. It’s a little complicated to get your head around, but the support is good and I’m up and running now. We’re a small team, so I worried about replying in time, but it’s working out OK. I’ve definitely made sales that would otherwise have disappeared on the back of it, and customers go away with a positive experience even if we can’t help. What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?I Google everything. If I’ve a website issue - cut and paste the error message directly into Google.Whatever it is, Google it. Someone, somewhere, will have the answer for you (for free).Advice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?Learn fast. Find good staff to support you. Ask for help from anyone who knows better than you - don’t be embarrassed.Research local organisations that advise small businesses and use them. Don’t expect miracles; appreciate the small victories. Build slowly. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes - just avoid repeating them.Focus your resources on core areas that you can see are making a difference. Be resilient. And pat yourself on the back every now and again!Where can we go to learn more?Website: https://anyoldlights.co.ukBlog: https://anyoldlights.co.uk/any-old-lights-blogLiked this text interview?
