Book recs??
The Ranger's Apprentice books. They have mentally ill people, found family, a sexy dark-lord for you to fawn over (who doesn't have a told motivation for being evil, he just is) tragic backstories and traumatic events, a timeline that doesn't make sense whatsoever (which means less stress when writing fics!!), knights, princesses, etc. There are some battle scenes and some very, very angsty scenes that will make you cry, but the conversations and dynamics between characters are funny, relatable, and a nice balance to those scenes.
The fandom is nice, and has a confessions blog where there can be a little bit of drama when you are bored (and you can send your own opinions in!!). It's also small, which limits (if not gets rid of) the amount of toxicity that fandoms like UNDERTALE/The Amazing Digital Circus has. (I would also mention that a small fandom is more close-knit, allowing you to make friends easier, but you already have me. What more do you need? /joking). While the trauma of the characters isn't really expanded upon in canon (except for the Royal Ranger towards the end of the RA series) there are tons of fics that will fit that criteria.
I will say though, while the author is nice, he is an old white guy. So there is some sexism and racism within the books. The fandom really fights against it, however, at least in my opinion. The small fandom also means less content being made on the regular and if you do make a major mistake it will spread around quicker. (But the fandom is pretty forgiving, so while mistakes might spread around, you will still get traction on posts. I've made embarrassing small mistakes and people still like me).
