so there's controversy in 1990 because the mayor refused to wear the ceremonial beaver pelt/mayoral chain, which i get although I know the pelt is still in use since I've seen it
BUT she also refused to wield the SWORD. we have a MAYORAL SWORD?!?!?

something i like about reading newspapers from the 80s is how there's much more art in them. Like, ads for salad dressing or furniture will be full watercolours, even truck ads will have an illustration with a couple of headshots cropped in and inserted behind the windshield. The weather is accompanied with a drawing of a little happy sun or a sad rain drop. Columnists will occasionally have little sketches of their faces. It's just nice and something that no longer happens at all, really.

one of the more frustrating things about working on google docs for work is that there is no option for canadian spellcheck at all and either i have to accept the default american spellcheck underlining half the words because how dare I put a u there, or making the poor UK spellcheck throw a fit every time I use a "z" where it wants an s (so, for an academic text that likes to abuse words that end in -ation, a Lot), I just cannot win.

work today feels like me (classicist) walking into a room full of historians (who aren’t even looking at me) and saying “DID YOU GUYS KNOW YOU CAN LOOK UP NEWSPAPER ARTICLES ON PROQUEST?! TECHNOLOGY IS AMAZING!” and they ask if i’m okay but i’m just crying because primary sources are so so precious cherish them always it’s fine i’m going to be fine

going through that existential crisis again where its like i like what i’m doing i am enjoying the research i feel like i’m making a difference but i’m also so so tired of pride parties like. they’re great, i’m glad people are coming, i’m glad they’re having fun but i would like to not have to shout over music at mildly tipsy people at a pride event does that make sense i am just not a party gay and i’m finding it grating and then i feel bad for feeling bad about it

i have the honour and privilege to help organize all these donations and info provided by very well known and famous locals in the community who will remain nameless
because they just throw in a bunch of unlabelled photos in a google drive and call it a day and im like i am Very Glad that you and my boss all know what these things are but now i have to go in and create a google doc guide to what the hell IMG_1234.jpg might be for me and my gaggle of 20-somethings who are eager to help but aren't old enough to remember the first starbucks in town opening or when smoking indoors was still a thing because who else is going to do it??? sob sob sob

on the one hand i am really excited about this exhibition (and you should definitely come see it if you are in edmonton between june 1st and whenever the hell in september! even if its shit!!) and on the other im just overwhelmed with all the stuff thats left out. the scope creep is so real and im already just sitting here like, slapping myself and going "okay, focus on what we already have up on the website, the point of this is to drive traffic there for the people who really want to learn more"
and like, yknow, i worry about the bigots and the homophobes and even the well meaning folks coming away with the wrong message but i think. i have to think about the closeted queer person whos thinking about leaving the province and saying, hey you, look at this, this is going to happen wherever you go... but isnt it great that we live in a place where its So Shitty that people have been coming together in full force since 1981 to say Hell No? what better place is there to stand your ground and fight than here. stand with us. we've had your back this whole time.
