“Night Ride,” by Harriette Joffe. What at first appears to be an abstraction devolves into an image of horse and rider—or maybe it’s the opposite. Joffe often incorporated women and horses into her work as reciprocal images of beauty, grace and strength. #harriettejoffe #artonpaper #interiordesign #artadvisory #abstractart #womenofabstractexpressionism #femaleartist #womenartists #womenshistorymonth #abstractexpressionism #paintingoftheday https://www.instagram.com/p/CpRdaQusdBB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Late in her career, the artist Harriette Joffe embarked on a series of works in watercolor on Yupo paper and inspired by the reflections, swirls and eddies in the Connecticut River near her home. Although ostensibly abstract, you can frequently make out a female shape or part of a horse’s body. She chose Yupo paper because of its translucent qualities—the colors darken and lighten and seem to move as the light changes and presumably how she experienced the moving, changing nature of the river. These works are exquisite and we have examples from the “Riversong Series” available. #harriettejoffe #contemporaryart #interiordesign #artadvisory #artonpaper #abstractart #femaleartist #womenofabstractexpressionism #paintingoftheday #abstractexpressionism #womanartist #femaleform https://www.instagram.com/p/Co6F_UWtkIU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Stop the World, I Want On” by Harriette Joffe. Joffe was passionately engaged with the idea of painting her entire career. In an era where artists use templates to construct their work and call it art, her arrow and her quiver were hand holding brush on canvas. Late in her career, the artist Harriette Joffe began a series of works inspired by the swirls, eddys and currents of the Connecticut River which passed by her home. She painted them on Yupo because, being translucent, it allowed the light to pass through and “bounce back,” thereby illuminating the work from behind. She scored the works, as you can see here, to add texture and interest. Harriette Joffe’s work was not overtly feminist but make no mistake: it was about female empowerment—women taking back the narrative of their bodies. She often showed this by placing women and horses in reciprocal poses on the canvas. Horses for her were metaphors for female beauty, power and grace. Pictured here: “Windscreen,” 1985. #femaleartists #womenofabstractexpressionism #feministart #contemporaryart #interiordesign #harriettejoffe #paintingoftheday #artadvisory #figurativeart https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ6GmRGAf5Q/?igshid=10mhxqaelrfur

“She Fell From a Star,” by Harriette Joffe, is a large, powerful feminist reinterpretation of Lucifer’s fall from heaven, as described in Milton’s Paradise Lost, but this time with a female protagonist. #harriettejoffe #artoftheday #contemporaryart #paradiselost #femaleartists #feministart #womenofabstractexpressionism #abstractexpressionism #paintingoftheday #diptych #interiordesign https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ8pdfIA_Ra/?igshid=1siff0k6oos7v

Harriette Joffe, “Dance Me a Story,” acrylic on paper mounted to canvas, 60 x 44. Joffe was one of the finest artists we have been privileged to know. The sense of line was pure de Kooning; the gracefulness was all her own. #harriettejoffe #womenofabstractexpressionism #femaleartists #contemporaryart #artoftheday #interiordesign #paintingoftheday #abstractart #abstractexpressionism https://www.instagram.com/p/CD9t1lkgkVm/?igshid=1w7s1w8fpy3tu

Untitled, from the River Song Series, by Harriette Joffe. Late in her career, Joffe returned to pure abstraction, inspired by the play of light on the Naugatuck River which flowed by her home in Great Barrington. Hers was not an abstraction filled with the macho brio of her predecessors and mentors such as DeKooning, but one of sinuous curves hinting at the beauty and grace of the female form.
