I am curious, how would the AU change if Mordecai had just been a civilian like he always wanted?
Not well, probably lol. I do think Atlas kind of benefits from the others being trapped in that underground world due to their connections, not just to him, but to the rest of his crew as well.
So, Atlas would be pretty disappointed if Silver fell in love with a civilian, putting Silver's foot in the door and, probably, eventually, leading to him quitting. Could he do anything about it though? He could try to drag Mordecai into it, but, in that timeline I doubt he would unless Atlas did something maliciously terrible, like frame Mordecai for something (which is an interesting thought).
However, that isn't how things go. Which isn't to say Mordecai and Silver falling in love and becoming so close doesn't cause Atlas problems. Just different problems.

♣Guns & Flowers Master list/Timeline
This is a canon divergent universe, and anything written here is of course subject to change!
Characters
Silver May - August 4th 1900
The only daughter of the Argenis family. Later adopted by Atlas and Mitzi May. Known for being quite the skittish recluse.
Mordecai Heller - March 28 1899
Atlas' golden boy, unforgiving and relenting, though Atlas claims he is more than that. Cold and professional by default.
Viktor Vasko - April 16th 1886
A mysterious and grumpy man who keeps his past and his secrets close to his chest. Though can be quite playful and teasing to loved ones.
Mitzi May - September 25th 1885
A musician who falls in love with Atlas and ends up helping out with the café and speakeasy. Overall friendly and playful, but isn't afraid to say it how it is.
Atlas May - January 3rd 1884
The owner of The Little Daisy Café and the Lackadaisy speakeasy. Known as an opportunist that is slowly collecting a menagerie of misfits. Known to be quite interested in the human nature and often pries into the psychology of those around him.
Rocky Rickaby - December 19th 1904
A rather rambunctious member of the crew who ends up asked by Atlas to look after Silver. Atlas, however, wonders what fate he has designated Silver to, seeing as Rocky is not entirely there.
Serafine Savoy - 1902
Mordecai's coworker at The Marigold, along with her brother, Nico. She had a short fling with Mordecai that ended up being a more permanent arrangement. Confident, spiritual, and appears to know more than she lets on at times.
Wick Sable - January 11th 1895
The man Mitzi has an interest in after Atlas' death. Has a fascination with rocks and is considered a pillar of the community, stopping him from financially supporting the Lackadaisy despite frequenting the speakeasy.
Timeline
1916
♣A Light In The Shadows
M | Two | Mordecai/Silver & Atlas | 1916/1920
When fleeing from New York, Mordecai is nearly killed for embezzling funds from the gambling rink he used to work for. Given a gun by Atlas, he is forced to kill the gamblers to save himself, marking his first kill.
♣First Days
M | Two | Mordecai/Silver & Atlas | 1916/1920
Mordecai stays with Atlas in Washington as he recovers. Atlas observes him in the meantime, while Mordecai begins suffering from lucid dreams.
Atlas encourages Mordecai to travel with him back to St. Louis, stopping at many cities along the way in the process. Mordecai notices Atlas often gets caught up in opportunities when he spots them.
1917
Prohibition is proposed in the Senate.
Atlas offers Mordecai a job as his bookkeeper, and tells Mordecai to think about it. Mordecai is extremely reluctant considering what he's seen from Atlas so far, though feels he is destined for this life.
Atlas begins training Mordecai in some of his ways.
Mordecai continues helping Atlas in his various travels, but is still yet to accept the job in all this time.
1918
Silver, reluctantly, is married to Valentin.
With a fair amount of money now, thanks to Atlas, Mordecai parts ways with Atlas to deal with some "unfinished business".
Atlas meets Viktor during this separation.
Mordecai returns briefly to New York for revenge. Receives bullet related head injury in the process.
Mordecai is taken back to the Little Daisy to recover.
1919
Prohibition is ratified.
Atlas can see Mordecai is cracking and coming to a decision, so he asks him that fateful question; "who are you?"
Mordecai accepts Atlas' offer for a job at the very end of the year. Atlas is thrilled, though curious what made him accept then.
1920
Atlas converts the limestone caverns under his café into a speakeasy.
Atlas hires Viktor and stops him from making a drastic decision.

Mordecai begins working with Viktor distantly. The lodge incident shown in Gravediggers through to Momentum occurs.
Mordecai goes back to St. Louis with Atlas as his shadow, while Viktor takes a break.
Atlas meets and courts Mitzi. Mordecai meets Asa and Mitzi.
The band begins working at the Lackadaisy.
Mordecai becomes a bookkeeper for the Lackadaisy.

Silver is admitted into an asylum after attacking Valentin. Silver is soon taken into Atlas' and Mitzi's care months later.

Mordecai and Viktor become rather close, spending nights together and doing the dirty work of run-rummers/triggermen together. Mordecai is confused by this, though thinks it's nothing more than a friendly business partnership.

Mordecai's lucid dreams become worse after starting the job.
Mordecai develops feelings for Viktor around the end of the year.

1921
Atlas and Mitzi get married.

Silver joins Viktor and Mordecai on the job after being introduced to them by Atlas.

Silver is accidentally shot in the head by Mordecai during a job, and presumed dead after being left in a house fire afterward.
Silver is saved and kept in hiding within the caves of the Lackadaisy.
1925
Rocky joins the band, and the Lackadaisy, in extension.
Mordecai and Rocky become friendly acquaintances.
Silver reads the Great Gatsby. Rocky accidentally lets slip that it's Silver's favorite book now and, despite coming out that year, is able to convince Mordecai it was always that way and he heard it from the others.

You seem to explore Atlas disappointing your OCs (and canon characters) a lot, and I'd be curious to hear your reasoning behind it.
By his own design, I don't think Atlas can very well please anyone. If everyone else is a cog in Atlas' machine, then Atlas is the one managing it. Whether a cog is happy or not doesn't matter. All it needs to do is function (so be helped with their injuries, be fed, trained, have a decent place to stay). At the end of the day, Atlas is so focused on potential that he can't see that not attending to the emotional needs of those around him only makes them slowly start to decay. And he probably has very twisted ideas about what these "needs" are.
His relationship with Silver is a good example of this. Atlas plays the role of a father, but only because he views Silver and Mitzi as a mini system he must also manage in his own way. There is love in all of it but, he sure doesn't show it.

Lackakids - Genesis
Introducing this series that I ended up actually writing! This is the first little piece to set everything up. The Lackadaisy cast has essentially found themselves in a Heaven of sorts, finding that they're children again and get to relive their childhoods together. Look, I am really not picky about interpretation, but, I just have to vent, because I got this slew of comments because someone couldn't do the bare minimum of research or (I suspect) properly check the sources provided to them. Obviously, if you find this person, please do not harrass them, but I have not included their username.
Also, if it's up to interpretation apparently, then why comment that in the first place?
Sure the picture is not in full color, but Atlas is literally in the front, in full color, and brown.
I politely explained that the flashbacks they were referring to were literally in grey scale and not a good reference for Atlas' fur.
And here is all the pictures I provided to show that, at least, Atlas' fur is not white (not that I should have needed these because there is LITERALLY a picture of him IN COLOR and HE IS BROWN!)
This is why media literacy is important. :) And also, just don't fucking put these comments on people's fics? I have literally read fics where Mordecai's eyes are like blue or some shit or Rocky's eyes are interpreted as grey and not said anything (and if I did, shame on me, I'll never do that again).

Tbh, I think Rocky might have hit the nail right on the head here;
Mister M, I know you'll disagree with this but, I could make up the most resounding, effective speech in history, and yet, you still wouldn't budge. Because, at the end of the day, you don't want to admit it is your own stubbornness that has led you down the path you're on now. You want someone like you to swoop in and save you, to have all the right words to say to convince you to take their path instead and save yourself. But, Mister M, I am not manipulative like you are. I don't want to change your life, I just want to have a discussion, something you struggle to accept.
Maybe Atlas feels so justified in the ways he manipulates others, because that was the kind of person he wanted as a young lad. Someone to tell him exactly what to do and set him on a path that could keep him secure for most of his days. He never had that person, so he became that person for himself and others, only for Silver and Rocky to call him out on how this doesn't actually help anyone, and that Atlas' waiting for this type of person has ultimately lead him to being unfilled in life.
(This is just from me writing Rocky to talk to Atlas' bot, so not in the actual fics, though I do think it is greatly implied now that I think of it).
