#ive had that quote memorized since i was like 14 it just buried itself in my head #but i was thinking about it yesterday when talking about black sails and nassau #and the ways so many of them -- eleanor jack flint rogers eventually max a bit too-- #have this need to try and eek love out of nassau #and its sort of for power sort of for stability but it really does read like this unrequited love #of pouring not only love but money and labor and commitment into this literal island like theyre winning her favor #and they feel betrayed and manipulated and hurt when it doesnt offer anything back to them #and its exactly like that quote like things SHOULD love you back #it SHOULD be true #but it isnt #this idea of /should/ like ive talked about before #where those exact same characters (save max) also have the idea #that they're owed things in life because theyve worked #so hard to achieve those things #anyways thats it #black sails meta
