I watched a movie then this happened oops
He spotted her from his hiding spot behind the large trunk of an oak tree, holding his breath in fear that he might scare her off. The nymph sat in a small patch of flowers, folding and weaving them into one another, humming as she did so. It was often that when he was out hunting or collecting wood and herbs, he would find her sitting or singing, dancing with the animals or just herself. He would watch in amazement every day and blindly fall in love with her actions, his heart always pounding as he watched from afar.
He was desperate to speak with her, though afraid of the consequences if he did. She could run and he may never see her again. It was as if she were made of glass and one wrong move would cause a catastrophic end. He stalked her from the tops of the trees one day as she played in the river, willing the water to whip up and dance with her. He gulped and shied away as she slipped off the white dress she often wore. The water was intimate as she bathed, caressing it in her palms before running it through her soft locks. That day he ran, fearing that she would notice him and his heart, fearing the branch would snap under him and she would disappear without a trace.
He begged for her heart, curious to know her smell and taste, the feeling of her hair in his hands and lithe body under his. His village spread warnings of forest women stealing their men and best warriors with their physical charms and alluring melodies. His friends were possible proof of this notion, it had been ten years since one disappeared and five the other, friends gone without a trace. His body willed him to visit her every day, soon his chores were no longer what kept him occupied. He failed to return home and spent his nights in the woods, his thoughts soon only wrapped around her image. He followed her every hour of the day, his heart hammering in his chest at the sight of her sleeping figure. When she slept, he would watch over her, what kind of weirdo would fall asleep in the middle of a forest anyway? But even then he refused to let himself get close, the trees keeping him hidden as he stared down at her golden face.
Did she have any friends or family, he wondered? She spent all her time alone with the animals and sleep in the same patch of soft grass. He’d collect fruits and berries and leave them in a basket a few feet in front of her, snickering from his perch in the sky at the sight of her lit up face when she found them. He would continue to find things around the forest that he thought she may like, picking her a few rare flowers and cracked geodes hidden in random caves. She would look around and wonder who left them, his identity always remaining a secret.
His courage broke out of its shell one night as he cautiously approached her sleeping form. He curiously eyed her dress, the fact that the item never became dirty was always such a mystery to him. He bent down and observed her sleeping features up close, snorting a bit at the way her nose wrinkled. His breath hitched in his throat as she rolled from her side onto her back, enthralled with the image of her strewn about hair and rising chest. He licked his lips as he scanned the plane of her bare neck, eager to mark it as his own. His body loomed over hers, unable to do anything other than watching her breaths softly go in and out. The ends of her hair were just as soft as he imagined, her dress silk and skin its perfect twin.
“...I love you...” He pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead, running off as she squirmed, high in the tree as she yawned and sat up with weary eyes. He was too far away to see the blush present on her cheeks, the nymph lying back down and drifting off once again.
His boldness grew as the nights went on, moving from the subtle caress of her body to light touches with his lips. The night he roughly etched a purple mark into the crook of her neck, her hand came up and gripped his bicep. His eyes were wide as he stared into her hooded brown ones, swallowing thickly as she stared blankly up at him.
“Don’t go... You always disappear before I get the chance to speak to you,” She mumbled, yawning under her free palm as she weakly shook her head.
“Y-You know who I am?!” He whisper-shouted, quick to pull himself away and scurry back on his hands.
“It’s hard not to notice when you’re being watched,” She giggled and gestured around her. “And the trees talk about you all the time.”
“They do...?” He flinched away from the one next to him and quickly turned back to face her as she laughed. He really liked her laugh, he decided.
“It’s not so kind to watch a lady when she bathes, you know.” Her smirk was small, his cheeks as vibrant as the pink cosmos growing nearby.
“I-I’m sorry!” He shrunk back as she crawled towards him, the smirk pulling salaciously at her lips.
“I would have done something...” She hummed, straddling his lap. “...if I didn’t like you watching.”
“U-Um, I-I-I’m Natsu,” His mind blank as she loomed over him and gently pushed him onto his back.
“Lucy,” Her smile was soft as she dipped down and cuddled against his chest. “Didn’t anyone ever tell you to stay away from nymphs? We steal men, don't’ you know?”
“It’s happened in my village before,” He chuckled, a nervous hand coming down to caress her delicate hair. “B-But I don’t care, I think you’re... so beautiful, just breathtaking,”
“T-Thank you,” She sat up and observed his features as he had when she slept, grinning at the shudder she felt when grazing a sensitive spot.
“Why do you run? I’ve never gotten the chance to thank you for all my gifts,” Lucy asked, the boy gulping as she began to unlace the front of her bodice.
“I’m scared that you might run away,” His voice was faint as the garment dropped from her shoulders, heart beating wildly inside his chest.
“I don’t mind if you want to touch me,” Her cheeks were pink as she brought his hand up to caress her breast. “You’re always so gentle,”
“I thought you were a-asleep,” He mumbled and gave an experimental squeeze, taking in the sounds of her soft and pleasing moans.
“Sometimes,” She panted lightly and flushed as his other hand fondled her chest. “...Did you mean it when you said you loved me?”
“Y-Yeah,”

[fanfic] Rewards of Losing:  Chapter 14
It wasn’t enough. As hard as the people of Heartland City tried, their efforts to push back the invading forces of Fusion just weren’t enough. There was one simple reason for that – Fusion’s army had so many different decks and every monster, spell, and trap in those decks could take weight in the physical world in the way that the holograms that the people of Heartland used couldn’t.
Within the first hour of the invasion, a shimmering barrier circled all the way around the city. None of the defenders were certain which card this was but it prevented communications to the outside world. No one could pass through it from either side. Heartland was on its own.
There were other reasons as well. The armies that entered through the gateways weren’t the only ones there. At every center of defense – police stations, city hall, fire stations – it was later discovered that Fusion agents slipped into the area and on the signal, summoned their monsters and unleashed all manner of hell there.
Within days the rumors of what happened to those defeated spread. They became cards. Those cards were gathered up and no one knew what happened to them after that.
But what else happened was far, far worse. Carding happened to those who fought back and some who tried to flee. But for those who were in other positions…
Mizael crouched behind a pile of rubble. He wasn’t sure of what the rubble had been before but now it gave him a place to watch what was going on. The city train whooshed by on the tracks, packed to the brim with refugees from one of the wealthier areas of the city. Those areas weren’t so wealthy right now. A contingent of Fusion warriors rendered virtually every area there into wreckage and ruins.
Now Mizael waited for them to arrive to escort them to one of the safe areas. There weren’t a lot of those. He stayed at the Night Garden – the safest of those areas. They were running out of space there as well.
The young man next to him shifted, staring at the train as it drew closer to the battered stop. In days gone by it would have been full of people waiting to meet new arrivals or others waiting for their own ride to elsewhere. Now it was just the two of them, keeping hidden in the heart of a grove of trees.
Every tree, bush, and flower that still lived in Heartland wept in their own fashion for what happened. Mizael hadn’t touched every garden in the city but he could feel the ones that he had, and so many of them suffered now. Some of them were razed to the ground or pumped full of energy to the point they couldn’t survive. It made him sick just to exist near them right now.
Around his waist there now rested a red scarf. In the past few days it had become a symbol of the Resistance, as they referred to themselves. Even those who had never been inclined to wear accessories before now sported one. He’d picked his up out of some rubble. It hadn’t had any stains on it, aside from rock dust. Better than some he’d seen…
“They’re stopping,” his companion murmured. Mizael didn't remember his name. He’d been sent out with others who didn’t always make it back. It didn’t always seem worth it to try and remember them.
This one did seem tougher than most of them, or perhaps with the potential to be tougher. He stayed where he was, even as he watched the train, muscles tensed and ready to leap out at a moment's notice. Mizael put his age probably at thirteen or fourteen – tall for his age, with a shock of blue-green hair, and eyes that reminded him of those of raptors.
He didn’t deserve to be in this. None of them did, but children like this least of all.
The doors hissed open and someone serving the role of conductor – even if they weren’t actually one – stepped outside and started to wave everyone out. Mizael and his companion – Kurosaki, that was his name – rose up and took two steps forward.
That was all they had time to take before a far too familiar sound echoed – a duel disk opening up – and a thrilled voice spoke.
“I activate Fusion from my hand! Using Iron Tool and Burning Soldier, I Fusion Summon Bomb Phoenix, the Heavy Bombardment Bird!”
Above them all there suddenly rose a black-feathered bird larger than anything that Mizael had seen short of Jinlong. Wrapped in blazing fire, it screeched a challenge towards the train, claws stretched outward. Down below, the Fusion soldier who summoned it laughed.
“Destroy it! Wreck it all! Now!”
Again the bird shrieked in awful cadences of rage and hate, and Mizael could hardly breathe. Two things struck him harder than any other. Unlike most of the monsters summoned by Fusion, this one had a soul as well as mass – a soul as dedicated to destruction as the one who wielded it.
And the one who wielded it was a Firestarter.
Kurosaki’s own breath caught in his throat. Mizael tried to steady himself, his head spinning a little as the creature drew its head back and blasted a powerful spray of fire at the train. The shrieks and cries of pain blotted out everything for a breath before they were blotted out as well by the shrieks of Bomb Phoenix and the blast of fire-seared air as claws dug into the train and crushed it.
It didn’t just dig into the train, though. Mizael jerked his head away, shaking. Every instinct he owned demanded that he get over there and help them and he couldn’t. There wasn’t anyone left to help.
“Mom – Dad-” Kurosaki whispered two broken words as he stared at the wreckage. The Fusion soldier laughed before he turned and spied them. He blinked a little.
“Looks like I missed a few.” His smile spoke of a degree of madness that Mizael hadn’t ever seen before. He stared intently at Mizael, then all but licked his lips. “A Healer? Oh, this is going to be fun.”
Mizael started to take a step back. He’d never backed away from a duel in his entire life and he really didn’t want to now. But seeing this person sickened him, and he didn’t want to be any closer than he had to be.
“Not interested,” he managed to snap. He hadn’t met a Firestarter or Fire Cat that he wanted to bond to. He tried very hard to ignore the far too vivid memories of Marufuji Ryou. It had only been a week – maybe a bit more. Time blurred together after a while.
The Firestarter Fusion warrior stepped closer. “Well, I’m interested in you.”
Oh, no. This was not what he wanted at all. Before he could bring up so much as a branch in defense, another figure stepped before him. His shoulders shook with rage, his eyes blazed, and fire dripped from his fingertips.
“You killed my parents,” Kurosaki Shun whispered, fire lacing every word that he spoke. Something deeper and darker than flames moved behind those words as well. “You won’t get away with that.”
The Firestarter barely glanced at Shun, his attention all on Mizael. “Get over here.”
“Not a chance.” Mizael growled. Now more than ever he regretted what he’d learned too late – that those duel disks had a self-detruct option. When he’d fought that Fusion soldier on the first day and defeated him, his opponent made certain to set off the self-destrct before Mizael could claim the prize. He wanted one of those duel disks, wanted to be able to summon his creatures, especially right now. Jinlong fumed in his ear, using words Mizael didn’t understand and wondered about asking the meaning of later.
The Firestarter began to laugh. He didn’t have a chance to laugh for very long, not when a long, thick lash of fire spiraled outward from Kurosaki and slapped across his face. There wasn’t much fire that could hurt even the weakest of Firestarters, but this one fell backwards, shrieking in pain.
Kurosaki gave Mizael a look. “Get back to base,” he said, sounding a great deal older than he looked. “I’ll catch up later.”
Mizael wasn’t going to argue that point, not right now. He vanished deeper into the copse of trees, branches hiding him quickly, and hurried along. Jinlong floated along beside him.
“That’s a very good young Firestarter,” Jinlong declared. “But I think he’ll also need a strong Healer one of these days. He’s very close to frosting over.”
Oh. That was what else he’d sensed. It wasn’t surprising. The boy had just seen his parents and who knew how many others perish in front of him. Other people had fallen into the frost under far less traumatic circumstances. They were probably all lucky that the area hadn’t been frozen already.
Slowly he worked his way back to the Night Garden. It was a very different place from before. Now guards circled it, Firestarters and Healers, all of them duelists. Deep inside there were rows of tents, with those survivors who’d been gathered up living inside. The rescued Healers combined their powers and reworked which trees grew there, providing fruits and berries of many different kinds. A few animal herds – not many, there wasn’t nearly enough space for a lot – gathered there as well. Herds probably wasn’t the proper word; there were chickens, geese, a few ducks, and the odd quail. Mizael wasn’t sure where they’d all been before the invasion, but he was glad to see them now. They provided fresh eggs and occasionally meat, though everyone was cautious about killing them. Once killed, something could only be eaten once. Eggs could be provided every day.
There were other gardens kept safe that had other small collections of animals – becoming miniature farms in the ruins of the city. Until they could find a way to get in touch with the outside world, this would have to be how they fed themselves. The food stocks from the grocery stores that hadn’t been eradicated already weren’t going to last forever. There were also tiny enclaves of survivors near the ocean, who managed to fish what they could out and get it to the inner parts of the city.
Mizael came up to the guards at the entrance. They were older, probably had once been professional duelists, and now stood ready to give the alert if any of the Fusion warriors came closer. One of them eyed him.
“Well?” Was all that he asked. Mizael shook his head.
“Kurosaki will be coming back later,” he reported. “On his own.” Everyone knew that they’d been out to welcome the train in and bring in survivors. This guard’s lips thinned.
“No one else?”
“We were jumped while we were there. They destroyed the train,” Mizael told him. The guard turned away and Mizael tried not to think that he’d seen tears there briefly. With a wave of one hand, the guard allowed him entry. Mizael made his way inside as fast as he could. He didn’t know if anyone else was looking for anyone who might have been on the train. He just wanted to sit down and rest.
He had a little tent. It was just big enough for him and for Kei. The Cat raised his head as Mizael entered to flop down on the thin pile of blankets. There were too many people here who needed blankets for most people to have more than two, one to lay on, the other to lay under. At least it wasn’t cold weather yet and Kei would make an excellent heater when it was, even if he wasn’t a Fire Cat.
“Did you find out anything?” Kei wanted to know. Mizael sighed.
“I haven’t yet seen a Firestarter from Fusion I would want to spend five minutes with.” So far he included Ryou in that number. He hadn’t seen Ryou since the other vanished with Yuuri. Surely if he wanted to come back he would have found a way by now? Even if he’d been hit with Firedamp, it couldn’t last forever. Keeping a Firestarter drugged for too long would lead to very bad things. Yuuri had to know that.
Which was why if Ryou hadn’t come back, it meant that Ryou didn’t want to come back. Maybe he and Yuuri had already bonded and were in that blissful time post bonding. Maybe Mizael hadn’t ever really meant anything to him after all. There had been that one moment when he stood between Yuuri and Mizael but then nothing.
Kei brushed his head against Mizael’s hand, tail curling around his ankle. “We’ll find him soon.”
Mizael just made a bland noise. Kei continued to advocate that Ryou would want to return and just couldn’t for some reason. Mizael let him believe that. It hurt nothing.
“If he won’t come to us, then we’ll go to him,” Kei said. Mizael raised his head.
“What are you talking about?” That was new. Kei had never said anything to that effect before.
The Healer Cat stared at him with those bright gray eyes. “Just what I said. We can find a way to go to Fusion ourselves.”
Mizael shook his head. “What in the world do you men?” For all that Cats held the sapience of humans, they didn’t think like humans, and sometimes it really showed.
“The Fusion warriors jump back and forth with those duel disks of theirs. We capture one, find out how it works, and fit it into one of ours. Then we go there.” Kei said it as if it could be done in a single afternoon, perhaps just in a passing ten minutes.
Mizael rubbed his eyes. He wasn’t even sure of how hungry he was, only that it was a great deal. That had to be why he was hearing that. “Kei…”
Kei nudged him. “Go to sleep. I’ll take care of that part of it.”
Then he slipped out of the tent. Mizael stared after him, shook his head, and curled up under his blanket. He’d figure out what was going on with that Cat when he had some sleep and food, and the sleep came first.
Ogawa Nobutoshi watched as Dark Blaze Dragon amused himself tearing up on of the small gardens that the Resistance members had kept from them. He’d happened on this one by sheer chance, having just one guard there, and that one he’d managed to card when her back was turned. Now his favorite card burned everything in sight.
This has got to be what it’s like to be a Firestarter. Ogawa wished all of his lief that he’d been born a Firestarter, to have that special spark inside of himself. But he’d never been able to so much as light a match. Using the deck that he did was the next best thing.
“There are a lot of people who aren’t going to be very happy that you did this,” an unexpected voice said. Ogawa twitched around in time to see someone half-hidden in shadows, staring at him.
His first thought was that it was one of those Cats. He’d heard rumors about the Cats, how they could talk like people and had the powers of Healers and Firestarters. They even wanted to steal the bonds between true Healers and Firestarters. The Professor had said it, so it was true.
Then he got a better look at the shape and relaxed. Whoever it was, this was human.
“Well, I’m not going to be here when they see it. Once Dark Blaze Dragon is done, I’m going back home.” Ogawa had taken a few pictures of his handiwork and looked forward to showing them to his friends who hadn’t had the chance to get out on the field. They were going to be so envious of him!
The stranger in the shadows strolled closer, coming out into the light. His bright orange hair stuck up like a carrot and his eyes gleamed a very wicked violet shade. He wore casual clothes, at least as casual as a black leather jacket could be. When he smiled, Ogawa had the feeling that this guy was about to go for his throat.
“I don’t know. It depends on if I let you go home or not. And that depends on exactly what you can do for me.”
Dark Blaze Dragon swooped down to hover over Ogawa. The stranger didn’t so much as look worried. “I can do that, too,” he said, and slapped a card don on his duel disk. Ogawa recognized it as one of theirs almost at once. He started to shape the question of where this stranger got it from when the card’s monster appeared in front of him.
“I summon Gorgonic Cerberus! By its effect, I also summon Gorgonic Gargoyle!” His unexpected opponent grinned a feral grin. “And with the two of them together, I XYZ Summon Gorgonic Guardian!”
Now before him there appeared a monster that Ogawa hadn’t ever seen before. He didn’t even have the words to describe it – vaguely female, with an odd headdress possessed of two bright glowing eyes that focused on Dark Blaze Dragon.
“By removing one XYZ material, I can target one face-up monster on my opponent’s field. That would be you, in case you haven’t guessed. Your monster’s attack is now zero and any effects it has would be negated. But your little toothless dragon doesn’t have any effects, does it?” The smile was far too ferocious. “Now once per turn – I can target a monster that doesn’t have any attack and destroy it.” He raised one hand. “Gorgonic Guardian, take out that scaled lizard!”
Beams of light shot forward from the mismatched eyes, wrapping all the way around his suddenly stoned dragon. In a breath, Dark Blaze Dragon exploded, and Ogawa stumbled backward, breath choked in his throat. This might not have been a clearly specified duel, but damage coursed through him regardless. If he didn’t find a way to defend himself, then he didn’t want to find out what would happen.
“Now, that was just a demonstration. These disks of yours work just as well with our cards.” The stranger moved forward, one hand flashing forward to wrap around Ogawa’s throat and lift him up off the ground. “But I have something else I want and you’re going to make sure that I get it.” He laughed. “And in return, I might just let you live.” He leaned forward. “But don’t get attached to that.”
Ogawa clawed at the hand around his throat and managed to squeak out a couple of words. He couldn’t be sure that they made sense, but his attacker must have heard something.
“My name? Oh. It’s Vector.”
To Be Continued
Notes: Finally! I get Vector and Shun in the same chapter! Two of my favorite characters. How did Vector get a Fusion duel disk without it being self-destructed by the original owner? Chapter 18 will tell that tale!

Finding Kurt Hummel: The New Rachel
Tumblr media
Masterpost
4x01: The New Rachel
It’s a new year, and a new Kurt.  Actually - it’s more like a new show entirely as Glee heads mashes up Glee: The College Years with Glee: The Next Generation.  It’s a rocky start here at the beginning of season 4, where the show loses its identity a little, and struggles with what it wants to be.  I’m not sure it ever quite figures it out, but we do get an entertaining second half of the series anyway.
I don’t know what BTS stuff happened to prompt it, and I’m not here to speculate, but this is the year that Kurt takes a back seat a lot.  So -- among the facts, I’m placing my own interpretation of things, but the blanks are often so wide here, that just about any interpretation is possible.
So, settle in kids, because this is about to get bumpy.
Back from Break
Tumblr media
Kurt’s first mention in Rachel’s inner-monologue, where she wishes he had come to New York with her.  And I kind of roll my eyes at the story here.  Because, essentially, Kurt didn’t get into NYADA so that Rachel could be alone in New York for --- all of one episode.  So what was the point? Other than to give Kurt one episode of misery in Lima before heading out there himself? I’m not going to apply reason to any of this.
Meanwhile, Rachel’s calling him every three hours because she really doesn’t handle being alone very well.  And we get our first glimpses of Kurt.  And here’s the interesting thing.  The outfit - it’s a very Kurt-ish outfit.  But Kurt, well, he’s changed.  I don’t necessarily think he’s taller, but his face is thinner, and more mature, and for the first time - it’s Chris Colfer does not look like he should be playing a teenager.  It’s definitely a (welcomed) jarring physical change.  Also, natural highlights, my ass, Chris.
Also worth mentioning - the fact that Kurt refers to a penis as a “twinkle tube”. You know he’s named Blaine’s.  I mean, c’mon.
Tumblr media
So, Kurt’s back at McKinley - and there is a little bit of, ah, c’mon Kurt, move on with your life lingering around.  He goes back to visit Sue, who has just had her baby.  Did anyone remember she was pregnant? Oops.
And then we are introduced to Kitty -- and the first thing the show does is introduce her as the New Quinn, and she insults Kurt.  And the writers really thought this was the best way to get us to like the new characters? Really?
Tumblr media
So - we learn that Kurt has signed up for classes at Lima’s community college.  Sue still calls him a sad sack, but I mean, what does he expect if he’s going to go back and visit her? This is also interesting when you think about it - this scene is here to revisit both Kurt and Sue, but doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense within the character dynamics - other than adding another mark on my Sue and Kurt have a strange connection list.
Anyway - Kurt might be handling everything Sue’s throwing at him pretty well, but there is some truth to what she says.  That he really shouldn’t be hanging around the past since it is holding him back.  And Kurt knows this.
Lima Bean
Tumblr media
So, we find that Kurt is working at the Lima Bean.  Remember way back when - when Kurt was filling out an application? Makes me wonder just how long he’s been working there, though probably not long if his manager is yelling at him to refill things, as if he’s just learning.  He is really adorable in his uniform though.
Tumblr media
Here’s my thing about Kurt being still in Lima.  I think there are relevant stories about staying in the place you grew up.  I think you can go home again - as evident by Finn’s story, and how I think Lima fit him best (and in a way that doesn’t fit Will very well).  But Kurt, Kurt isn’t really living right now.  He’s hanging on to the past, is way more excited about glee club auditions than the two people in glee club, is being bullied by a girl still in high school, and getting yelled at to fill the biscotti.  Kurt’s just kind of existing, and not pushing himself to be his best, in that Kurt-ish way he usually does.
It’s interesting - the only other time we see Kurt start a season being content with the sad state of his life is season one.  Season four is about hitting the reset button on the show in a lot of ways, and Kurt, who has had a really great couple of years, is starting from the bottom again.
Tumblr media
So, yeah, let’s talk about Blaine for a second.  At the beginning of his scene Blaine and Brittany are chatting - about Santana, and how Brittany’s not having the greatest time.  In a lot of ways Klaine and Brittana are going through the same thing, and it’s not easy for either couple.
Brittany misses Santana because she’s never there, and you get the feeling that even though Kurt is right there next to him, Blaine misses Kurt, too.  I can only assume that the summer was kind of rough -- and that Kurt was in a deep funk for a lot of it not having gotten into NYADA.  Blaine was already doom and gloom about their relationship before, but Kurt staying in Lima isn’t any better.  He’s only a shell of himself, trying to pass the time any way he can.
Also worth noting - Brittany calls Kurt out on his patheticness, as Blaine tries to sugarcoat it.  I kind of like that Brittany is never afraid to tell it like it is.
Anyway, Kurt and Blaine have been off kilter for a while, and there are tidbits in season three that show this, but here, they are really out of sync.  And it’s going to be a long, long time before they’re back on the same page.  It’s going to be really hard, but man, there will be a lot of great stuff to sink my teeth into.
Auditions
Tumblr media
It’s funny that Kurt is so into auditions here.  Also, it’s going to give him practice for when he comes back in two years and is running the club with Rachel.  Interestingly, he’s sitting next to a way less than enthused Blaine.
Btw, why are all the glee club members there watching? That seems weird to me.
Anyway - this whole scene is for the introduction of Jake Puckerman, who is channeling his brother pretty hard here.  Kurt declares that it’s rude when Jake purposely knocks over the music stand.  But c’mon. Will was pretty rude interrupting him in the first place.
Also, Kurt’s still there for Marley’s audition - but we don’t really see him.
The New Rachel
Tumblr media
You guys remember when a BTS still came out for this moment, and we all concluded that the higher Kurt’s hair got, the more gelled Blaine’s got? Yeah...
Also, nice to see that Kurt’s still got an insane way of organizing music.  Who lays it all out on the floor? Also - he’s dividing it up this time between genres, Broadway, Standards, Top 40, which at least makes more sense than by emotion.
Tumblr media
A big chunk of this episode is devoted to deciding who the ‘New Rachel’ is.  And here’s where Will’s teaching style has done some damage - because these very talented kids are all fighting against each other in order to be the ‘star’ and replace Rachel Berry.  I will say, one nice thing about the New New Directions is that they do kind of get rid of the whole New Rachel rhetoric pretty quickly and become a much more ensemble based group -- AS IT SHOULD BE.  But, part of that is the difference between Finn leading the group and Will.
Kurt, meanwhile, is totally misremembering his time at McKinley, and claims that the glee club was about acceptance.  And to him, it probably was, because it was the first time he felt like he belong, like he was a part of something.  But that’s not necessarily true to others in the group.  And, Tina does have a good point - Rachel, Mercedes, Santana, and Kurt fought all the time over who was the biggest diva.
Interestingly, there’s no reaction shot from Kurt when Blaine receives New Rachel status.  I actually don’t think that was intentional.  But it is interesting...
It’s Time
Tumblr media
Okay, so here we go.  The conversation starts out about Blaine being the lead soloist.  And what Kurt says to him is kind of strange.  First, that Rachel made everyone feel included.  No she did not, what even Kurt? If there’s one thing that I don’t like about this season it’s Kurt drinking /all/ the Rachel kool-aide.  Also, I’m not sure why the comment to Blaine about wanting to make sure everyone was included.  If there’s one person who is going to do just that - it’s Blaine.  But, I mean, it’s dialogue to fit the episode more than the character, so there’s that.
But then there’s Blaine to Kurt -- that he essentially says, you’re stuck, you need to move on.  And he’s right.  Kurt knows that he’s right.  And I know Blaine gets a lot of flack for pushing Kurt to New York then being upset that Kurt left but A) Kurt wouldn’t have done anything he wasn’t ready to do deep down and B) Kurt, once he moves to New York, is not a model boyfriend, and that’s a whole issue I’ll be chatting about in later episodes.
But yeah, it’s killing Blaine to do this, because he is incredibly scared about their relationship going forward, and you know, Kurt is, too.  He’s finally here to have the conversation he didn’t want to have in Goodbye.  But Blaine just reiterates Kurt’s earlier words - that they’ll be okay (even though, now, they both seem unsure). But the important thing is that Kurt staying in Lima - would not be any better to their relationship, and I think they both know that, too.

Something I’ve never noticed before -- but Blaine singing to Kurt in the courtyard has always had to do with change.
Somewhere Only We Know - Kurt comes back to McKinley, and he and Blaine area separated.
It’s Not Unusual - Blaine comes to McKinley and they’re together again
It’s Time - Kurt goes to New York and Blaine stays and they’re separated.
Got to Get You Into My Life - They sing together, and Blaine goes to New York with Kurt, and (despite another break up inbetween) they’re together for good.
OMG you guys - I don’t know if I should credit Glee with this much cleverness.
Anyway - this song is about changes (and not changing), and while it’s very much about Blaine - it’s about Kurt, too.  Because, essentially it /is/ his time to grow up and change and go down the scary path towards adult hood.
It's time to begin, isn't it? I get a little bit bigger but then I'll admit I'm just the same as I was Now don't you understand I'm never changing who I am
But thing I find interesting about this song, is the message of staying the same through that change.  Kurt’s going to go through a lot of hard things, but he remains, as ever, himself.  Which is pretty cool.
Also, I want to note the playful nature of this performance.  The cups, the jumprope, the goofing around -- it’s very childlike.  And, while that’s very Blaine, and I may be stretching this a little, it’s also a commentary about their relationship, too.  Up until this point, they’ve had a very childlike, innocent, fairy tale romance.  Sure, there were a few cracks in season 3, but things are going to fall a part very, very soon.  And in that, the childlike nature is ending.
So yeah, this is all bittersweet, and a goodbye to Klaine as we know it.  Which makes this scene a lot sadder in retrospect.

I wonder if it was intentional or not to have this moment mirror the Somewhere Only We Know moment.  But yeah, all through this song, Kurt watches Blaine, and is amused, and delighted, and sad, and wistful, and very much in love.  Kurt’s heart very much wants to go to New York - but it’d be disingenuous to disregard how much he’s going to miss Blaine, too.
Also - this scene cuts off quickly, and that’s because there are two bits of dialogue missing.
Kurt: I’m going to miss you so much.  You really are a star.  Blaine: And you’re mine. You always will be.
Why would you cut that, Glee? Why??
Leaving On a Jet Plane

There’s a thing where Blaine and Burt are somewhat alike.  Because they both know that sometimes, you have to give Kurt the push in the ass that he needs.
Oh. That sounded better in my head.
What I mean, though, is this.  One reason Kurt didn’t get on a plane and head to New York over the summer is because he’s scared.  Because failure is a thing that haunts Kurt, even if he doesn’t always like to admit it, even if he presents himself with the best confidence.  He is human, after all, like the rest of us.  And, god, going to New York without a plan is, really, kind of insane.  But Burt does have a point -- it is an adventure, it’s how you learn to make your way in the world.  If you don’t go out there and try, then you’ll never know if you’ll be successful or not.

And the longer this scene goes on, the more hesitant Kurt is to go on.  And Burt is just amazing.  Because his heart is breaking to see his kid off, but he knows it’s in Kurt’s best interests.  And he knows Kurt well enough to say just what Kurt needs to hear to get him out the door.  It really is a fantastic, sweet little scene - that is the epitome of what these two have been through the past few years, and the strong bond they’ve grown since then.
Kurt: You really are the worlds greatest dad.  Burt: I know, it’s written on the mug you got me for father’s day.
Burt tells Kurt he can always come home - but I think part of being a parent is letting your kids go - and go on to live their own lives.  Burt breaks down a little, and Kurt looks back, but the path is already set.
New York
Tumblr media
Oh this scene...  Kurt arrives in New York, and naturally the first thing he does is find Rachel.  It’s probably the smartest thing he does, because man, guys, just as an FYI - if you’re moving out to NYC, do plan a little.  Kurt’s plan is seriously insane.
And, you know, I’ve kinda resented this scene for a long time.  Because it has this rom-com feel to it, like you know, lovers who meet up at the end of the movie.  And after not having much romantic Klaine, it was irksome when I first watched it.  I don’t know if I necessarily feel the same way anymore.  I mean, god, time, what have you done! Lol.  It doesn’t feel as rom-com-ish, nor does Klaine feel not that romantic (geez, there’s some great Klaine stuff in this episode, you just have to look).
But -- I will say, this kicks off season 4 Hummelberry, which might be even more frustrating than season 3.  Kurt’s less indulgent this year, though, and that helps.
So yeah -- Kurt’s in New York, ready to start this new portion of his life.  Poor kid, it’s not going to be easy for him.  But it’s going to be a fascinating ride...
