You know how I said Tobias was going to come out as bigender at some point? Actually, make that genderfluid. I did post before on my Lotor blog that I’d always wanted Lotor to be genderfluid and while I wanted Tobias to be bigender like myself, I really don’t see Lotor just restricting himself to two genders--so Tobias gets the same.

What kind of discourse would you start?
Tumblr media
Canon's punching bag
People would kill for you. You are the one thing the fandom can agree on. In canon you had some difficult times so in fanon you're always safe and happy. You are in a lot of fanart where you're chilling or getting hugged with the descriptions like 'they deserved better crying emoji'. Whoever doesn't like you is proclaimed a monster with no heart
Really fucking fitting seeing as this was what Lotor was in VLD canon.

Why Tobias Mendelssohn Is Considered The Greatest Trainer of All Time
(and it’s got almost NOTHING to do with the fact he beat ~10 Leagues and was a favorite to join Kingsguard)
Tumblr media
I mean, you could say he becomes the strongest Trainer of all time, although whether he actually is is certainly up for debate. But you know something? “Strong” doesn’t mean “great,” and it certainly doesn’t mean “legendary.” Strong, talented people are a dime a dozen--especially in a world where every single muse is OP. But what makes someone good is not what makes someone great is not what makes someone a LEGEND like Tobias is. For someone to go down in legend and not just history, they need to have the sort of broad cultural impact that most people who are simply talented lack. Tobias is strong enough that people have false legends about his strength, yes. But even that pales in comparison to everything else he’s contributed to Training.
Tobias studies Training. He’s studied it a lot. He’s particularly invested in the modern phenomenon of Training in which 1) battling is accessible to everyone, 2) you usually leave home to do it, 3) thanks to early Heroes (protags) of the 20th century, the figure of the “single hero” taking down a region-wide threat becomes not only romanticized but also commonplace and 4) thanks to Red, it’s possible for a child to get strong enough to take down literal gods. And given that he’s been connected with protags the world over through his studies, the mark he left on Training in terms of his advocacy and his scholarship is absolutely UNPARALLELED.
He studies the influence of Heroes on politics and the resulting phenomenon of increasingly younger participants in politics to the ends of the Earth. He produces many groundbreaking papers on Trainers in culture, the culture of Trainers, and how they shaped the course of history. He digs deep into the metaphysics of Cosmic Immunity and writes books on the topic that cement him in the canon of great scientists. He’s also written a lot about the ethics of allowing mass amounts of each population to get as strong as they are, and while he never actually gives an answer because it’s so thorny, he writes a book deconstructing the issue from every possible philosophical and political angle. He’s the creator of the Icarus Theory, the idea that Heroes tend to skew young (and face the resulting consequences) because younger people--particularly children--are not only less aware of the consequences of their actions, a young sapient’s bond with their Pokémon accelerates their Pokémon’s growth MUCH faster than an adult’s. Most importantly, he writes these ideas in a way that’s accessible to the broader populace, allowing his ideas to diffuse more quickly and become more relevant. (Well, maybe his explanation of cosmic immunity isn’t accessible to those who don’t have a college degree, but it still says something that it’s well-loved as a textbook among college students of metaphysics.)
This is to say nothing of his activism for young Trainers. He founds an organization known as We Were Soldiers, which acknowledges the trauma of young Heroes--particularly child Heroes such as himself--and in which he likens their experiences to his own as a child soldier. Through this organization, he brings together Heroes of the world to advocate for a cultural reform in how Trainers--particularly Heroes--are viewed. He strikes out against the capitalist forces that urge children to make money for their families at the tender ages of 10, decrying Poké Mart’s relentless glorification of the valiant young Hero’s journey so that more people will buy their products--a glorification that played a HUGE role in the Pokémon world’s prevailing view that 10-year-olds are just adults in smaller bodies. He dares to challenge the prevailing idealization of single Heroes taking on region-wide issues through We Were Soldiers’ #HeroesNeverStandAlone campaign--the core message of which was that we shouldn’t be forcing the responsibility on one person, we should all be working together to address region-wide issues…
Thanks to him, Leagues have paid reparations to the Heroes whom they failed and started to bar children from participating in law enforcement activities. Thanks to him, the Pokémon world starts to be cured of its delusion that 10-year-olds are just miniature adults; as a result, it becomes illegal to try anyone under the age of 18 as an adult, whereas in the past, some countries tried 10-year-olds as adults. Thanks to him, the Pokémon world moves on from its Hero worship (and foisting lifelong burdens on young Trainers) to the notion that we can ALL be Heroes if we work together. Oh, and thanks to the Trainer’s education system he developed in Unima, Trainers are better-educated and more likely to succeed should they switch professions, because you better believe his methods of raising young kids both Training-wise and academically are replicated around both worlds. Really, the only Trainers who’ve had a similar influence on their profession are Red, Ash Ketchum and the first person who ever was a Hero.
While a lot of this takes him a long, long while to accomplish, he gets enough of it done by his retirement at age 38 that people are already calling him the greatest Trainer who ever lived. By that point, a spot had opened up on Kingsguard--the select group of twelve knights surrounding @idanikou’s Ghetsis who could beat him in an all-out fight--and he was a heavy favorite to take that position. He knew by then he would have had the skill to kill Ghetsis if he lost control of his godly powers, as it was the Kingsguard’s job to do. But as Ghetsis puts it, he has the skill but not the heart--and so he shocks the world by not taking the position. He doesn’t need another fight, another burden to carry by that point. He doesn’t need to live the rest of his life with the dread hanging over him that one day he’ll have to kill the uncle figure he loves. He doesn’t need to do ANY of that to be considered the GOAT. He has nothing left to prove--and so, for his own sake and the sake of his ego, he can finally retire in peace knowing that he’s left his mark.

A Concise List of Tobias’ Adventures
Tumblr media
Concurrent with Ph.D. Project: Ages 20 - 26
The Galarian Stars Showcase--defeating Spectre
The Torren Spectacular--plot pending
The second Galarian Stars Showcase--plot pending
Served as a mentor/companion to two Protagonists during his research over the course of 6 years. Took over the journey of a third because they were too young to handle it. These journeys served to extricate Arceus from his Pervasion of every aspect of the main Pokémon universe, in the same way that he was driven from the Uniman universe.
Joined with several others in the final battle against Primal Arceus and his fell forces. (Although, really, given that any one of the people in the party could take Arceus down by themselves, it was less of an epic battle and more of everyone getting a chance to kick him for Closure(tm) as he curls into a ball.)
Uniman League third triumph (though did not take the Champion position)
The Rest (ages 26 onward)
Venanlos (an unreleased fanregion belonging to a bestie of mine)--helped clean up Team Shatter who moves there (and also stays awhile because it’s nice), ages 26 through 29
Cameira--served as mentor and companion to the Cameiran “Remake” protag who went after an Arceist-backed resurgence of the blood sport there. Ages 29 through 31
One-year hiatus
International Draconid League--worked with the League’s Champion, Hoshekina Yawanara, to root out Draconids who had defected to Arceus’ cause, ages 32-35
Preuzien--worked alongside Wilhelm von Blumenthal / @totentcnz to bring down a government that was covertly paving the way for Arceus’ return. Gently but firmly shoves aside an itty bitty ten-year-old who otherwise would have taken on that role and suffered the resulting trauma. Ages 35-38
Retirement
An Overall List of Leagues Beaten Before Retirement
Unova (when young)
Alola (pre-actual League; Tobias completed the Island Trials however)
Dispara (although it was less him going through the Gym Challenge and more him just. Killing every Gym Leader before making it to the E4 and Champion)
Kalos (via an old plot with a bestie of mine where he made it all the way to the end of the Kalos League just to yell at Diantha)
Unima (first time)
Unima (second time)
Venanlos (tentative draws with the Champion)
Cameira
International Draconid League
Preuzien (same method as Dispara)
Note: I had Tobias’ original retirement age at 45. But given how badly he needs a hecking break from all this fighting……I’m going to have him come home a little sooner 🥺

So I said in this headcanon here that Eternalux went willingly with Wilhelmine because she was in such despair that she basically gave up on this universe and any hope of defeating Arceus and figured the only way forward was to destroy it, in so doing destroying herself. I’m retconning/rearranging this for a few reasons.
The first reason is, Eternalux is a being that’s as old as the universe. 13.5 billion years old, and even though her defeat alongside Friedrike was her lowest point, I don’t think she’d give up so easily. She’d have been alive for long enough that she’d know there’s always a way out of such dire circumstances. Losing her godhood as punishment for rising up against Arceus for a couple of years would be just an eyeblink, and the helplessness she’d feel would not be near long enough for her to decide that this universe was beyond saving and had to be destroyed. The second reason is, if she willingly went with Wilhelmine to prop up the blood sport, her relationship with Friedrike would be damaged, perhaps irrevocably. Friedrike would see Eternalux’s actions as a betrayal of everything they worked toward, and would never want to bond with her again. And since Friedrike did bond with Eternalux for the final battle against Arceus, that wouldn’t work. Finally…I’m a sucker for redeeming even some of the worst types of characters, but giving Eternalux a redemption arc after siding with Wilhelmine does feel like. A bit much, to be honest. Which is rich, coming from me who’s contemplating making a character who wants to destroy an entire timeline still redeemable (at least if he’s stopped early on), but hey, my writing, my rules. LOL
So here’s what I’m doing instead.
As stated, Luise did not wish to overthrow Arceus. Instead, she made a peace treaty with him, and obviously, this would have left Eternalux quite upset. She would have recognized, unlike her host Luise, that Arceus cannot be reasoned with, that he can only be defeated through battle--and she would have stewed in frustration that Luise couldn’t see it as clearly as she did. Worst of all, Luise could have used her Legendary-level Pokémon’s Aura manipulation capabilities to restore Eternalux’s divinity as the two of them Eternamaxed. But she didn’t do it for what her mother could only later describe as “hippie reasons,” which broke Eternalux’s trust in her so powerfully that she was able to detach her near-complete fusion with Luise and move on to someone else.
That someone, as in the previous headcanon, was Wilhelmine. But unlike in the previous headcanon, Eternalux didn’t do it with the intent of overthrowing and starting a new government. She figured she could just let Luise dream away of a peaceful future on her throne while she went and busted up Arceus with Wilhelmine. But the bitch had no intention of busting up Arceus. Wilhelmine totally lied when she said that she was willing to give up her own Vessel of Arceus divine status just to see through the world that Eternalux had always dreamed of. The truth of the matter is, she was actually working for Arceus! So when she fused with Eternalux to make Aquilaeon and went before Arceus’ throne, Arceus bound the two together. Their life forces became inextricably intertwined so that if Eternalux harmed Wilhelmine, the same harm would be done to her--essentially a forced Bond Phenomenon. This wouldn’t be undone until Tobias came along to break the chains that bound the two in the final fight, finally liberating Eternalux from the shackles of the past 140 years.
And since I can’t think of a conclusion--there you have it, the revised backstory.

I’m going to teach myself how to draw fur today with this drawing of Tobias’ Chatterealm, Kova! Chatterealm is the Uniman evolved form of Meowstic, and the concept is that it’s a cat with a universe inside of it. Some of you may remember Meowstic’s Pokédex entry that if it ever unfolds its ears, it releases enough power to grind a 10-ton truck into dust! By the time I remembered that headcanon, I’d already drawn Kova with his ears unfolded, so have a mugshot of him destroying a truck with the sassiest expression possible.
Technically Kova used to belong to his mom but after joining Tobias in the final battles against Wilhelmine and Lotor, Kova sort of became his and they have shared their little fur baby ever since. Kova is also his mom’s Bond Phenomenon partner, so the two of them are mentally bonded even across universes--allowing Amira to essentially always be at her son’s side even though the two of them were apart. Isn’t that sweet?

If Unima were a setting of a video game, there would be two games.
The first game would be the traditional “collect all the badges, beat the evil Team and become Champion,” except set in a warzone way darker than Pokémon canon. There, you are in Tobias’ place as the protag, and Tobias is actually one of the rival characters. He’s a mix between a friendly and a jerk rival in that he can be a dick and he does get jealous that you’re the great Hero of Dispara instead of him. But ultimately he recognizes you’re fighting for the same cause and wants to help you get better.
The second game, where the Tobias Bad End fight was set, would be both a sequel and an AU. You actually start the game as Champion, having lost your entire team in the battle against Wilhelmine von Hohenlohe and being able to get some higher-level ‘mons off the bat when they pledge their services to you. It would deal a lot with the struggles of actually maintaining the Champion’s seat and guiding the region through the difficult times of reconstruction for a better future. Along the way, you can either ally with Tobias’ Team Blade and grow stronger in your convictions that love and friendship can triumph over all…Or you can become disillusioned with the Great Uniman Dream of a better future, join with Team Shatter, and choose only your own power. And given that the storyline (much like real life) sometimes punishes you for choosing love over hate or integrity over pragmatism, it can be real fucking easy for a blind playthrough player to start picking the choices that lead you to the bad end.
The good route is harder at first, because sometimes, being good can be the hardest choice you ever have to make. You’ll find yourself groaning in frustration as game bosses that play dirty and use slimy methods to juice their Pokémon run you over repeatedly, and also, watching some of your teammates die because you did the right thing is going to make you want to quit. However, you unlock Pokémon Amie effects, all six Mega slots and Bond Phenomenon, and eventually your team will bond enough to unleash Unity Attacks. After that, the later game (except for Tobias temporarily acting like a dickbutt as your final boss) is going to be a breeze.
The bad route is the opposite. It starts off on the easier side because you essentially get to cheat in order to win, but actually gets way harder later on, because in the long run, crime doesn’t pay. You won’t have Pokémon Amie effects or Unity Attacks, unlike basically all of the good guys you’re facing. You’ll get to unlock Megas, but you’ll likely never be able to Mega your entire team like some bosses because in this game, you can only Mega once your Pokémon have hit max friendship--and max friendship is a lot harder to obtain than in Pokémon canon, because it’s influenced by things such as your Pokémon’s responses to the decisions you make in cutscenes. Then you get to Tobias, who basically Megas/Bond Phenomenons his entire team, giving you a battle that’s nearly impossible--and his is just the last in a series of fights that’ll keep you up until 3 AM soft resetting as you try to find a way to beat them. Ironically, though, knowing this actually makes some players deliberately pick the bad options so they can have this experience. Because what’s an insanely difficult video game without an insanely difficult challenge?
