#how much you wanna bet the test goes viral on tiktok tho lol
Anectodial evidence, I know but at least for me, my brain does react differently to salty taste depending on how much sodium I've had. As in, I have suddenly lost all appetite halfway trough a meal despite still being hungry because it was salty. And I've had times I couldn't drink without my stomach turning despite needing water until I licked some salt. I guess this is one of those every-body-is-different things you have to figure out if it applies to yourself.
Thanks for stopping by, and. Yep! That’s basically the whole salt thing in a nutshell. Every body is different!
Doctors are… it can be difficult to get a good one that listens. But there are some things you DO need a doctor for. However, it’s also SUPER important you listen to your own body. Listening to mine lead to my (really important) celiac diagnosis, but I needed a doctor to perform the testing, if that makes sense.
A little salt isn’t going to kill you, especially if it helps you feel better. And some people really DO need more salt. But maybe don’t just lick straight salt, something we use for it’s flavor, as a measurement of wellness. Unlike most (key word MOST) vitamin overdoses where you’ll most likely just flush it out rather than have adverse effects, salt does not act the same way, and long term effects can be dangerous. Too low salt, however, is equally concerning, and BOTH have many of the same side effects. We don’t need a whole lot of salt day to day, and lots of foods already have salt IN them, even if we don’t taste it.
Also, it’s not always as easy as ‘not enough salt in diet’. We should also think about delivery of nutrients—aka, what are you eating? Is there enough protein? Do you lack electrolytes? In my case, the cells responsible for absorption of nutrients were practically razed, and to this day I still have to deal with that (although, I should also check in with a doctor to see how that’s healing, because those needs can easily change!). This means that my vitamin cabinet is stocked enough to start a small business. No salt pills, though, because I manage enough in my usual diet. Again, salt is a flavor, we LIKE how it tastes even if we don’t need any!
As always, do your own research, and if you have concerns- try reaching out to someone with a medical degree, not randos on the internet with too much time on their hands (myself included).
That said… no, the salt lick test isn’t… real. (Fairly certain.)
