VISUALISING/MOOD BOARD:

This year I am interested in exploring sculpture.

It is what I find exciting, as I am fixated on knitting at the moment - and is an area that I haven't investigated since my 2nd year. I think it will be worth revisiting, with what I have done in my practice last year, my research and interests in feminism, themes such as contrast, manipulation, fragmentation - and reimagining that through sculpture.

I am fond of the draping and inconsistent repetition. I am also interested in how knitting is used here, it has been brought into this contemporary art space - challenging connotations of craft, elderly women, "hobby".

This sort of draping and change of texture is super captivating to me. I love the tension that this work creates. This stretch, how the work seems as though it is reaching upward while simultaneously being dragged down. The imperfections, the holes and curve I find quite beautiful. Soft. Feminine?

Tracey Emin, (b. 1963) - (Above)

Tracey Emin has been an artist to who I often come back to. She works across many mediums - Emin's content is autobiographical, and intimate - something which in the past my work has been. I think as I start to create work this year that will carry over, definitely autobiographical and stemming from personal experiences and centring myself.

An example of artwork similar to what I have been envisioning in my head - I love the laddering curving, the organic sort of shape that it takes - and how this is achieved through knitting. Something which has been dismissed as a craft for old ladies, creating something quite grungey and contrasting.

I am still interested in the female nude or feminine form - as I am a female artist myself and that has previously been where my practice has been focused - on a more bodily experience, I feel as though there is perhaps still some sort of connection here - yet not as explicitly.

【Creative Encounter】Week 8 Discussion about small group production

3D Model

In this class, we had a lot of free time to discuss about the project. As others made a 3D model last time, ideally it was the best if we could pain it over but on that day, we did not have pigments to paint it on. So we decided to discuss how we want to paint it. The options were either to paint it colorful or paint it in one color. Zine suggested to paint the 3D model white, so the viewers can focus on the shape and each elements rather than the overall picture. I agreed with it because the purpose of 3D model is to describe the visual elements in our tree. This discussion led us to to consider whether the final work should resemble the real tree or make something unique and futuristic. What does the tree mean when the tree looks realistic? It could make a chaotic scene because the real tree would never have phones hanged on. However is it necessary to create a impossible situation? The visitors’ attention would be drawn to the situation, rather than the context behind the work. By making the whole scene futuristic, there will be no oddness in that situation. So we decided to paint the tree white on the final work as well.

Resin Sample

Also, we discussed about making a sample of the middle part of the tree. The middle part was planned to be made with transparent resin with cables and Christmas lights inside to show that the tree is a living being. We thought having a small sample of resin on the side of 3D model would help to communicate the visual idea clearly. We will decide if we will make it or not the depends on the time left until the deadline.

The idea of the Space

We are thinking of placing mirrors on all the sides on the pace so the tree and the lighting would reflect on the mirrors, as a result the visitors would feel lost in a mysterious space with a hundreds of trees reflected on mirrors. Zine suggested one exhibition space, 18- th strand as a reference. He went to one of the exhibition called Other Spaces by The Store X The Vinyl Factory, which features three large-scale installations by the multidisciplinary collective UVA – Our Time, The Great Animal Orchestra and Vanishing Point. In this exhibition, the screen on the walls across the whole room was reflected on the water on the ground, it created the dimensional space. We liked this setting so we decided to use the idea of “reflection” in our exhibition space. To give more entertainment, we are considering setting up a long and dark hall before going into the main room. When the visitor walk on the hall, they see the strong rectangle light from the end point, which gives it a setting of going into the inside of a phone.

Photographing the 3D model and Resin sample in the studio

To communicate the idea more concretely, we thought taking images in the photography studio with proper light setting might help. In this way, we can present the 3D model with the most relevant background, so it becomes much easier for viewers to imagine what the whole space would look like and how would the tree be presented in the space.

To photograph the idea of the space, we need to prepare the 5 mirror about the size of the tree. We will make a cube with them and place the 3D model of tree and a mini figure of the visitor in the middle. In the exhibition, we would put 6 sides of mirror but in order to take photo of inside, we have to take one side off, either top or front. As the lights will be reflected mirror we need to prepare decorative lights rather than obvious lighting equipments.

Photobook making

We decided our aim to make photobook as to communicate our visual ideas for the project.

So in this photobook, we decided to include about these contents.

1.Overview … Although our main focus is visual ideas, it would be natural to include overview to give general idea of our project.

2. Draft, Visual Elements … We are gonna explain what and where visual elements we will be presenting. ex) phones, tree, resins , etc.

3. 3D model, materials … We are gonna talk about the detailed design of each visual elements, such as what materials and equipment we are going to use

4. Exhibition space … We will put the image of the exhibition space and the floor map.

(5. Artist interview) … Video projet

I came up with a few ideas for book designs.

Since our topic is young generation’s use of social media, I wanted to put some image that directly relevant to the topic, then I came up with placing an image of phone with the instagram feed on the screen, part of the instagram feed is cropped and mirror is placed, so the viewers sees themselves in one of the instagram post on the phone screen.

I got this idea from one of the reference image I found on Pinterest. I am thinking about making book into foldable booklet rather than the traditional style book. On one sides, I would place the portrait images all over, and on one side, I would place the contents.
