(headcanons: kneepads, sleeves etc) (don’t reblog!)
a lil repository of equipment-related headcanons of what those muses wear on the court, based on what we see in the manga and stupid thoughts in my brain.
yamaguchi - always wears kneepads despite being a middle blocker and a pinch server. wears them out of habit more than anything else, and on the rare occasions he has to receive, doesn’t have the best falling technique. hence, kneepads. doesn’t play at the net enough to have any use for taping on his hands or fingers.
kuroo - nothing. doesn’t really see the necessity for them, as he plays middle blocker and is tall enough that he doesn’t have to jump ridiculous heights and exert pressure on his knees. when rotates to the back row, has a good enough technique that the impact on his knees if he contacts the floor isn’t dramatic. occasionally tapes his fingers if he gets hurt.
iwaizumi - wears kneepads. plays defense pretty aggressively and often goes for the emergency save that gets past the libero, meaning less control on his fall and the risk of harsh impact. he doesn’t mind the sensation of them and always prioritises injury prevention anyway. routinely tapes the fingers of his hitting hand, mostly a injury prevention too.
miya - nothing. is extremely particular about his fingers due to his position as a setter, and avoids having to tape them as much as possible (unless physically forced by his trainer or coach). generally hates feeling constricted in any way, and feeling like he’s wearing anything that restricts his movements - hence kneepads and sleeves being a no-go, even if he plays defense relatively often.
ushijima - no kneepads and no compression sleeves. like atsumu, he prefers to feel unresticted in his movements, especially when he has to run and jump. in the back row, dives too rarely to have to think much about protecting his knees or elbows. switches to compression shorts once he plays professionally on his trainer’s advice. often tapes the fingers of his left hand (which the anime robbed us of) due to thesheer force of his spikes.
konoha - it changes from one panel to the other during the tokyo training camp hELP. depends on what he’s feeling on any given day. sometimes wears them, sometimes not, sometimes forgets them at home, doesn’t make much of a difference to him. tends to wear them more consistently for actual games.
oohira - kneepads. he plays defense quite a lot, especially stepping in for ushijima, and has a tendency to fall to his knees when digging the ball rather than dive, so kneepads help reduce impact and bruising.
bokuto - compression sleeves (legs) and kneepads. he receives quite a lot in the back row, which is the primary reason for the kneepads. the compression sleeves were a recommendation from his coach as he is a highly mobile and acrobatic hitter who puts a lot of pressure on his legs and knees, and needs the compression to prevent pain, swelling and further injuries. also, they look cool af and no one can tell me this wouldn’t factor in his choice to wear them.
goshiki - wears two different kneepads (yep, i double checked). the one on his left knee is longer and more covering, offering a better grip on his leg, as it is the dominant leg he falls on when receiving the ball. the right one he wears just in case he has to fall on his right knee, but it happens less often. often needs to tape his fingers due to recurring injuries (inexperience, then sheer power).
tomas - he’s a middle blocker who subs in and out with the libero. almost never receives, therefore virtually doesn’t need kneepads. doesn’t particularly feel the need for compression sleeves either. fingers often taped due to blocking-related injuries - just the usuall for a mb.
ozu - wears kneepads to prevent injuries when receiving and to reduce impact. when she became niiyama’s starting libero, started wearing arm sleeves to improve her blood circulation, slide better on the floor when diving, and because she finds the pressure more comfortable than not wearing anything.
