what would you say some defining features of girl crush concept is? in terms of sound, styling, choreo...?

Ok so, like a lot of concepts in kpop, girl crush has been around for multiple decades and has since evolved quite a bit. Whether or not a specific comeback or group is girl crush is something that can be up for debate for a lot of people and you’ll get some that really straddle the line. For this I’m gonna be talking about the most popular forms of girl crush and what I think girl crush is at least right now. Tbh it’s feeling a lil overplayed to me rn but I am also a sucker for dark or cute concepts so its also a big bias of mine.

The groups that I can think of off the top of my head that are Girl Crush Concepts (or use it often enough, Or have had some Iconic girl crush comebacks) are:

Blackpink, 2NE1, Itzy, Everglow, Loona, (G)-idle, 4 MINUTE, NMIXX, Aespa, like… most of 4th gen gg it seems. It really took off in 3rd gen and has carried over to 4th gen in a major way.

Styling

- either lots of black with accents of bright colors or just lots of vibrant colors. usually hot pink, bright/neon green, or just a lot of borderline neon colours.

- leather

- fishnets

- plaid

- chains

- combat boots

- wide range of hair styles but mostly natural, non fashion colours with fashion colour accents

- dark nails, long nails, or both

- oversized jackets (often jean) or cropped jackets (sometimes both)

- silver jewelry, usually lots of rings

- chokers

- guns or weapons but in a cute girboss way

basically 2016 girl empowerment “not like other girls” (but still sexy) liner sharp enough to kill a man wet dream.

Sound

- lots of edm tracks

- lots of house house (deep house/maybe tropical) but you’ll find some big room, and moombahton. Mostly just various styles of edm, usually with less focus on providing melody?

- vocal heavy, maybe some rap (depends on group)

- lots of lyrics about like being yourself or wanting to get revenge on a boy or being better than a boy. (but in a somehow not feminist way, like it still isn’t coming off genuine. like the concept itself usually feels like it wouldnt pass the bechdel test. not all the time but ykwim) either that or just. We’re so fucking great. and we’re girls. (no hate tho, they fuckin slap)

- usually belting, lots of chest voice.

- overall difficult to really pidgeonhole bc its more dependent on the individual group’s vocal style

Choreo

- similar to sound, it’s hard to really define this as much bc it depends on the group itself and the choreographer.

- Usually has a lot of simple looking moves but Stronger, to match the song vibe. More simple formations. (unless they’re loona) usually pretty tight knit tho. They don’t spread out a lot.

- really dependent on the group though. look at kill this love by black pink vs like ptt by loona.
