ACAU- Test Results
Arthur’s E Class receives the results of their midterms, and decide to reap both Narcissa’s and Nick’s bets at once. However, this becomes unfortunate for Narcissa when some of the classmates find a loophole in her bet.
“You... seem... nervous.“ Michy turned to Brid, who was clutching her backpack.
“I am nervous.“ Brid laughed. “I know I’m the best physics student in the class, and everyone was counting on me, but... “
“It’s okay.“ Michy hugged her. “You and Adi have been working together on combining your knowledge and studying from each other’s notes. I’m sure you’ve done very well.“
“Brid has a mind for physics and chemistry.“ Adi walked over to them. Even Michy could see that Adi was nervous, whittling the wood off her pencil with her fingernail. “I doubt I’ll be number one. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Brid were.“
“Thanks... “ Brid blushed. “Oh no, I’m still nervous... “
“Don’t worry.“ Michy held Brid’s hand. “It’s not like the entire plan rides on your shoulders. We need three out of five, remember?“
The entire class stood up as Narcissa walked into the room. In her hand, she held a manila folder.
“Good morning, everyone. I’m sure you’ve all been patiently expecting the results of the final exams. Well, they’re here- and right on schedule. I’m sure everyone remembers our bet?”
“One shot for every top score, right?“ Lumi asked. “In each of the five subjects.“
“That’s correct!“ Narcissa smiled.
“What... bet?“ Vince walked in. “I only heard the one the kids made with the A Class.“
“There were two,“ Aiden said. “For every #1 score the kids get, Narcissa will allow them to shoot her body. Second, if they can beat the A class for top scores in the five main subjects, they can ask the A class for any one favor.“
“You kids better take advantage of these opportunities,” Vince muttered.
“Oh, I’m so nervous... “ Brid squeezed her bag even tighter.
“Okay, let’s begin. First place in foreign language... with ninety-nine points out of one hundred in the Spanish exam... is... Maiya Anara.“
“Yeah, Mai!“ Larke high-fived his friend, along with everyone around her. Despite her abhorrence of people touching her, Mai couldn’t help but let them.
“Nice work, Maiya. We’re very proud!“ Narcissa smiled at her.
It’s no surprise Maiya would learn Spanish quickly, Arthur thought. Maiya used to drift between homes in different parts of the city. She had to get accustomed to learning different languages in order to survive.
“That’s one shot, I guess!“ Narcissa smiled. “Okay. First place in English, with one hundred points in total, is... Velvet Atrugiel.“
The entire class’s mood dampened. Julien’s eyes widened before they slumped back in their chair.
While we all expected someone like Julien to win, since she’s got such great verbal skills, it’s not surprising that Velvet’s calm and logical manner would win out on an essay. Oh well, it’s only one loss out of the two we can afford. It’s not the end of the world yet... literally.
“Julien Kashi, by the way, was second place, with Aditi Khan at fifth. Nice work, both of you. You should be proud of yourselves for making it this far.“
Julien smiled briefly. Arthur could sense their pain. He held his hand out for them and let them squeeze it.
“Now, for science. In first place, with one hundred and three points- ooh, even the bonus? is... Bridget Shao.“
“What?!“ Brid was dumbfounded. She was instantly trapped under a hugpile of six different people, all congratulating her.
We all knew Brid was going to top the charts. Science is in her heart and soul.
“You’re doing amazing, sweetie.“ Narcissa smiled. “Now, for social studies. In first place, with ninety-nine points, is... Flynn Etherfield.“
With that, the entire class erupted into cheers. People were grabbing Flynn and hugging him, exclaiming over his score. Narcissa laughed and let them cheer, while Vince pulled on headphones.
“We won!“ Val cheered and pumped his fist. “Fuck yeah!“
“We haven’t won yet-“
“And I know exactly what we’re going to ask for,“ Lumi said. “We’re all in agreement, right?“
The entire class nodded.
“But wait. We have one more result to hear.“ Brid turned to the front of the room.
“In mathematics... “ Narcissa pulled out the envelope. “First place, with one hundred points is... Nicholas Kronus.“
“What?!“ Val exclaimed. “But... “
“Kronus beat you out?!“ Lily slammed her hand on a desk. “Shit.“
“Calm down, we still won the bet.“ Mai hissed.
“But Val was so looking forward to beating him!“
The entire class got into an argument over whether they should have been celebrating or not.
“Three out of five,“ Vince muttered. “They still won the bet.“
“Yeah.“ Aiden smiled.
“Thank goodness.“ Narcissa smiled. “I’m glad they all put their best foot forward.“
Vince examined Narcissa’s face. “Narcissa, I’m sensing some manipulation on your end. You’ve messed with something.“
“I don’t know what you mean!“
“Nope, it’s obvious.“ Vince turned to her. “I don’t dispute the test results. But you’ve created some sort of loophole to ensure you have the upper hand in the assassination.“
“Of course. I don’t want to die.“ Narcissa held up the five envelopes. “The thing is, my speed decreases the more I’m shot. I can hold up for about five shots at above fifty percent, but if I’m hit with a sixth, I fall to only about ten percent of my normal speed. Which is about seventy miles per hour. Which is... not fast.“
“Three shots? Will that be enough?“ Verona asked. “Narcissa was still pretty fast when she shot her hand three times-“
“It ain’t three.“
“What?“ Verona turned up to look at Adrian, who had an evil-looking smile on his face. With the deftness of a knife thrower, he threw a paper folder towards the front of the class, scaring Narcissa.
“Hey, Teach.“ Adrian yelled. “You said top scores in each of the five subjects, right?“
“Yes... “
“You didn’t say which five.“
“Huh?“
The folder floated up into the air and opened, revealing four stapled packets. As Narcissa read them all, her eyes grew wide. “No way... ”
“What is it?“ Vince leaned over. “Oh, you freakin’ kids... “
“What is it?“ Arthur asked.
“I’ll tell ya what.“ Lily chuckled. “Adrian, Ares, Michy, and I topped the charts with perfect scores on home ec. That brings the total up to, what, seven?“
“Seven?!“ Narcissa exclaimed. “S-SEVEN?!“
“You look nervous.“ Michy laughed. “Did we out-loophole your ass?“
“Seven... “ Narcissa laughed. “Seven... seven shots... that’s thirty miles per hour... seven shots all at once... “
“I think we broke her.“ Ares sighed. “Anyway, seven is more than enough, isn’t it?” He glanced up to the front of the room. “Oh, hey. Where’s Narcissa?”
Narcissa had completely disappeared.
“She’ll be back later.“ Vince sighed. “Anyway, you kids better get back to work, all right? You’ve got a couple more days of school before break hits. Are we clear?“
“Crystal.“
“School’s out for today, then. I’m going to catch up on grading.“ Vince walked out of the room, taking his jacket off. As Aiden followed him, he gave the kids a thumbs-up.
