Roger Ebert: A Good Soldier of Cinema by Susan Doll

I lived in Chicago during the heyday of Roger Ebert’s career as a movie reviewer. I read his weekly reviews and Sunday essays in the Chicago Sun-Times, and I watched the various incarnations of Siskel and Ebert on television. Though I was a regular reader and viewer, he was never my favorite reviewer. As a matter of fact, I have always been ambivalent about his work, though I acknowledge his influence on the discipline of film reviewing, and I salute him as a champion of cinema.

My ambivalence comes from his approach to examining film, which is based mostly on personal taste. Coming from film studies, which involves a variety of structured methodologies for digging deeper into the meaning of movies, I don’t care for the idea of using personal taste as the dominant criteria for judging a film’s quality. As a young female with a modest income, I did not have the same experiences, interests or tastes as Ebert, a middle-aged male from a different economic class. I rarely agreed with his perspective, and there was little else in the reviews. Like many taste-based reviewers, he equated high drama with quality filmmaking and tended to dismiss genre movies, especially horror.

But, Roger Ebert was much more than a weekly movie reviewer; he was a good writer who wrote expressive essays, often based on unique interviews. He was a true cinephile who promoted unsung films that had been squeezed out by an increasingly unfair distribution system. Eventually, he parlayed that obsession into his Overlooked Film Festival in Champaign, Illinois, which fans have dubbed Ebertfest.

It is this Roger Ebert who is the author of Herzog by Ebert, a collection of writings about the work and career of Werner Herzog. Ebert greatly admired Herzog, whom he met in 1968 at the New York Film Festival. Both were 26 years old at the time and about to participate in the most original era of filmmaking in cinema history—the late 1960s through the early 1980s. Herzog would be behind the camera as a filmmaker while Ebert was in front of the screen as a critic. They sustained a personal relationship until Ebert died at age 70 in 2013. Herzog dedicated his documentary ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD (’07) to Ebert, whom the great director called “the Good Soldier of Cinema,” because he “plowed on until there was no breath in him.” Ebert was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2002, which began a roller-coaster of relapses and complications from various surgeries. His health struggles left him unable to speak and without part of his jawbone. Yet, he continued to write and to manage his Overlooked Film Festival. His last review was written within hours of his death, so Herzog’s statement was no exaggeration. Herzog wrote the introduction to Herzog by Ebert, which is an honest assessment of their relationship. He doesn’t romanticize or exaggerate it, so when he ends with the acknowledgement that his life was better for knowing Ebert, you know he means it.

The best way to enjoy this book is to read it in conjunction with the Herzog films available on FilmStruck. Six of Herzog’s earlier films are available, including AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD (’72) and FITZCARRALDO (’82), as well as two documentaries about him, WERNER HERZOG EATS HIS SHOE (’80) and BURDEN OF DREAMS (’82). The films represent his work from the first half of his career; the latest is MY BEST FIEND (’99), Herzog’s documentary about his relationship with the eccentric, volatile actor Klaus Kinski.

You can sense Ebert’s respect for Herzog’s approach to directing in which each film represented an adventure to be taken, often to a far-off corner of the world. Herzog has shot in the jungles of South America, the sands of the Sahara Desert, the frozen glaciers of Antarctica, even on the slope of an active volcano. Herzog’s mad idea to drag a steamship over a hill in the jungles of South America for FITZCARRALDO, like the title character does in the film, was mentioned by Ebert on more than one occasion over the years. Though Ebert calls FITZCARRALDO meandering and “formless at times,” his admiration for Herzog’s audacity overrides his opinion of the film, noting it is “a movie in the great tradition of grandiose cinematic visions.”

In an interview at the Cannes Film Festival, where FITZCARRALDO premiered, Ebert questioned Herzog about the necessity of dragging the ship over the hill. The director answered in larger-than-life statements, claiming the scene with the boat allows audiences to trust their eyes again after years of Hollywood’s trick photography and unreal special effects. His boat is real, he declared, which “gives you courage for your own dreams.” Ebert poked at the director a bit: “Did you wonder if it was all just a little ludicrous?” But Herzog, who thought in grander terms, remained elusive, and the interview ended on that note. Their exchange is a perfect example of Ebert’s unique interviews, which are actually closer to essays, because his questions are embedded, almost hidden within conversation and observation. In his interviews, he revealed the essence of his subjects, foregoing the trivial factoids or cutesy anecdotes of most celebrity interviews.

Ebert offered noteworthy critical observations and interpretations of Herzog’s work, and those observations were often evocative and expressive. Herzog’s relationship to the settings of his films is profound; the setting or locations are as much a subject or character as the human participants. Ebert liked to say that Herzog “believed in the voodoo of locations,” which was a great phrase that he borrowed from the director himself. But, it was Ebert’s clarification of the phrase that made it understandable. In his review of WHERE THE GREEN ANTS DREAM (’84), he explained that the director “believed in the possibility that if he shoots a movie in the right place at the right time, the reality of the location itself will seep into the film and make it more real.”

After Herzog dedicated ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD to him, Ebert penned a letter to the director. The letter expressed his deep appreciation for the honor, but just as his interviews were more than just interviews, this was more than just a letter. It became a summary of his thoughts and observations on his films over the years as well as a mini-analysis of Herzog as director. In the last paragraph, he states, “You ennoble the cinema when so many debase it.” It is one of those statements that seems so simple on the surface but has many layers: It reveals Ebert’s great passion for film; it extolls Herzog’s artistry; and, it reminds us that the great era of cinema they experienced together is long gone.

Wet Plate Collodion Portraits of Burn Victims

Clément Marion, a French photographer in his early twenties, shoots only with analog processes. In his latest project, he decided to use wet plate collodion to capture intimate portraits of burn victims.

“My first contact with this world was during childhood; there was one in my village,” says Marion. “Much later, I heard an interview which asked this question: ‘When was the last time you saw a major burnt person? Haven’t you seen any? These people are hiding.

“This sentence touched me, so I asked myself how to help this cause, [and bring] acceptance of others, … advocate tolerance.”

Marion had also wanted to try wet plate collodion photography for some time, so he decided to combine both his objectives in 2020.

Photography has always had an omnipresent place in Marion’s life for the past fifteen years. He started photography very early on when his father presented his sister with a compact camera, which he used for some time. That was his first contact with photography. He then had his own camera, ultimately moving on to Minoltas, a Rolleicord, and even a miniature Minox.

The first film that Marion developed was in college when he was nineteen, and he was instantly in love with the medium. He enjoyed the fact that he could accomplish everything with his own hands, from the shoot to the darkroom processing. Digital photography, even today, does not interest him at all.

Last year, Marion, who has never taken photography courses, spent the first half of 2020 practicing his collodion skills by photographing his friends. Then he was ready for the project. He had heard about the process from Sally Mann, one of his favorite photographers. Collodion to him was the “highest photographic process, but also the most random and complicated.”

The Sinar F2 4×5 is his camera of choice, a 135mm lens and 8-10 Multiblitz X10 AC/DC flash heads to light the subject and the background in a rental studio. His plates’ sensitivity is approximately only 3-6 ISO, and therefore he needs that many flash heads to get a good exposure.

Flash gives him the convenience of not having to have the model stand still for long exposures. The 4×5 collodion plates are scanned on an Epson Perfection V850 Pro Flatbed Photo Scanner for online use and making prints.

The wet collodion process has a significant disadvantage: the entire process, from coating to developing, has to be done before the plate dries. This gives the photographer no more than about 10-15 minutes to complete everything. Marion has to use a rental studio with an attached darkroom for his project due to this difficulty.

His first model had to travel to Toulouse, France, where Marion had his set up then. He found her from her Instagram, which she had set up after her accident. In that first shoot, he had chemistry problems but managed one good plate from the session.

“I welcome people early in the morning; I present the laboratory and the protocol from start to finish,” says Marion of the morning introduction. “At first, I lacked training, it was 4 or 5 plates per afternoon, but towards the end, I reached 10.”

As he gained expertise, he had to worry less about lighting and chemistry. He had figured out the shape he wanted to give to the series, and things followed more smoothly.

In between the session, Marion serves a meal and discusses the project. They can view the photos already in the series and ask him questions.

“Often, that’s when we bring up each other’s stories. It’s a crucial step, especially to introduce the shot,” the photographer explains. “Some have had accidents. For others, it is about aggression [assault]. I usually guide the models, especially to make them feel comfortable at first. But of course, I am open to suggestions. It’s very important to stay that way in these cases; everyone has something to bring to a shoot. It’s a four-handed work.”

Marion has shot twelve subjects so far but always shoots only one angle/pose for each person even if he exposes multiple plates.

“The parallel between this [collodion] texture and that of the scarred skin of burn survivors is obvious, [and therefore] I decided to use wet collodion for this project,” explains the artist. “This film dries little by little from the preparation for the shooting, until at the end of the development of the photograph. Eventually, it hardens, retracts, sometimes cracks, and often changes color. These are also the main characteristics of burn scars.”

The negative emulsion is made up of two main elements, among others, collodion and silver nitrate. Separately, they are both used in medicine for wound healing. The collodion as a bandage, and the silver nitrate, in the form of a small stick, allow burning a poorly healed scar to direct the skin’s re-healing. Together, these two elements form a photographic emulsion similar to a thin skin spread on a glass plate.

Marion also has a book (hopefully) to be published by crowdfunding (PetaPixel asks all crowdfunding backers to do their own due diligence as we do not endorse any project). It is a 6×8, 50-page book that will be sent free of charge to around fifty health professionals, who will use it as a support in their medical procedures with their severe burn patients. It will feature photos as well as “a small writing participation from each of the people photographed.”

When asked how long he’ll continue to work on this series of burn victims portraits, the French artist replied: “Forever, I don’t know, maybe when I’ll think that I have what I need.”

Wait… do does this mean we won’t get to gush over photographs of Baldwin in a wedding dress? Not quite: the source also confirmed to the outlet that the newlyweds will have a formal religious ceremony and celebration with friends and family. “They’re going to have a big blowout, in front of God and everyone they love.”

And, before you go rushing to conclusions about why the young love birds rushed the the altar, hear this: multiple sources have told TMZ that “100% she’s not pregnant.” I guess true love can make you do crazy things?!

February 7, 2019: The Vogue Tell-All Interview

Four months later, Mr. and Mrs. Bieber appear together on the cover of Vogue‘s March 2019 issue, and in their joint interview, pull back the curtain on their holy matrimony. “The thing is, marriage is very hard,” Hailey said, “that is the sentence you should lead with. It’s really effing hard.”

The article goes on to reveal that when the pair reconnected in June, Justin was more than a year into a self-imposed tenure of celibacy, working though what he calls “a legitimate problem with sheex.”

“He doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff,” Justin explains. “He’s like, I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain. I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that. I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result.”

Justin and Hailey were saving themselves for marriage—and thankfully, they didn’t have to wait long. The interviewer implies that sex was one of the reasons the duo rushed to the alter back in September. The other reason? “When I saw her last June, I just forgot how much I loved her and how much I missed her and how much of a positive impact she made on my life. I was like, Holy cow, this is what I’ve been looking for.”

April 1, 2019: The Instagrammed Sonogram

Around 4 p.m. ETA, Justin shared a caption-less photo of an ultrasound to his Instagram feed, leading the internet to believe he and Hailey are expecting their first child. A few minutes later, he followed up with an image of Hailey in the doctor’s office, cupping her stomach, with the caption: “if U thought it was an April fools.”

OK so we know that they’re already legally married however Hailey and Justin are ticking off all traditions for their upcoming wedding (which will be happening on September 30 at South Carolina’s Montage Palmetto Bluff hotel). Whilst Hailey was out celebrating her impending nuptials, Biebs himself had clothing on his mind: specifically, what suit he should wear to re-marry Hailey. Taking to Instagram, Justin shared three images of suits that look as though they’re part of a costume store’s catalogue asking fans to help him choose which one he should wear. We’re pretty sure he was joking. But honestly at this point we have no idea.

September 27, 2019: The Biebers Anger Hotel Guests

The Biebers’ aren’t making any friends with this wedding, apparently. Guests at the Montage Palmetto Bluff hotel were advised that they can not use the spa, one of the main pools and a restaurant for 48 hours beginning from midday Sunday until midday Tuesday. Per TMZ, guests have been offered refunds, upgrades and free meals as a result of the inconvenience. The word “LIVID” was used. Intense.
