States as Rainbow Kitten Suprise songs, part 1
How to: Friend, Love, Freefall
Pacific Love - Alaska/Hawai'i
No look no look platonic or romantic he is a simp for her
Hold my hand darling
Pull me in your waters
When you call my name, I'll be on my way
Mission to Mars - California
Ohhhhhhh my god oh my god. Ok, so. The song generally is about a performer, presumably in a space like Hollywood, fighting hard to cling to their 15 minutes of fame, and trying desperately to stay in the spotlight. Please. Please. I wanna do a whole analysis on this oh my god
But basically, Hollywood Cali
Heard it booming at parties, whispered in homes
The pundits on the radio won't leave it alone
I heard it once, heard it twice
Heard it well enough to tell
They say the mission to Mars, is destined to fail now
And I love how in the end, the last part is the same sentiment, but hopeful
Fever Pitch - Utah/Illithiya
Them being good for eachother my beloved and him being a simp, but more then that, her inevitable death. Her lifespan that will end before his and the bittersweet in every happy moment tainted just a bit by the future. And his hope that maybe, maybe he might be able to join her in an eternity
Hallelujah
The iron king sings a song for the lover
The leaver, the lonely, and like
Young love waits
If I can then I'll meet you at the gate of St. Peter
It's called: Freefall - Gov and California
I love when I can make a song apply to a character in 2 different ways
1, Gov is the devil referenced in the song. This works both in how Gov is Not a good character, but also in the way the Devil interacts with the speaker. Both comforting and concerned, as well as a more tough love approach
2, he is the speaker. The one who stays up late and isolates himself from others and won't admit when he's wrong
Called to the Devil and the Devil said
Hey! Why you been calling this late?
It's like 2 A.M. and the bars all close at 10 in hell, that's a rule I made
Anyway, you say you're too busy saving everybody else to save yourself
And you don't want no help, oh well
That's the story to tell
Now with Cali, he is most definitely just the speaker. It is very much about the self destruction and unlike Gov where it'smore about never ending work and a deepset exhaustionthat won't leave it's more violent, especially with friendships, and the inability to recognize his own wrongs
Some day's end when I need a few friends
Now and again I could never hope to keep them
Thought to give friends what I thought that they wanted
Never had they needed a good friend as I've been
Don't get me venting on friends who resent you
'Cause all you've ever done is been a noose to hang on to
They thought was a necklace and reckless they fell into hell
Where you both hang with nothing to do but
Holy War - Texas
Is it mostly him cause it mentions Dallas? Yeah. But also the parts that allude to a relationship
I see it said in your eyes
All the time
You ain't gotta tell me you're fine babe
They call that Holy War in Dallas
They call for Holy War
On us
Matchbox - Calivada
Quite literally going feral I cannot use words to explain how it fits them just look at the lyrics like a nice, soft love, but maybe a but bitter as it is ended, or ending, due to someone wanting more in life and accidentally leaving a relationship in ruins but maybe it's more a mutual thing, left and discarded, all the while thinking "Well, it's not all on me. They have to talk to me too" And leads them to a premature end to a good thing that maybe wasn't that good maybe it was rotted under the surface and needed work that was always ignored but dammit it was theirs
Or maybe I'm looking too much into this
I also love that it references Mission To Mars
You're a master of passive-aggressive magic tricks
Like, that's not a card that I would've picked but it's your life to live like how you'd like to live
You're type of cool that likes to talk a lot
I'm the type of fool to listen
Salutations to Apollo
While the Mission To Mars is surely soon to follow
And you bit my lip when I kissed you
I bit my tongue not to tell you that I miss you
We shared my blood for an instant and I would trade some more to have it back
Yeah I would trade all of this for that
Everybody I know wants to be a star
Just above the atmosphere flying high
Just above the average fear to try
Keeping me grounded, holding me down for miles
Everybody I know wants the gleam
In designer tops and ten dollar magazines
Infatuated with the beams, you go crazy when I speak
I'm the asshole who keeps laughing at our predicaments
Like this ain't the life that I should've picked
But it's the cards we're dealt we play with
Shit
Moody Orange - Florsiana
I dunno what it us, it's just them. It's chaotic and a rush, and a constant movement and maybe some behaviors in the sing encouraged by the other are not healthy, but there is love there, and it is pure through all the ups and downs. They are a team, and partners, and willingly to try again despite it all
I love the way you know how
I love the way you walk out
I love the way you shut it
Down
Now
Paint it moody orange
Does help that Florida loves oranges
Hide - NJ/NY
When related to specifically them, a denial of feelings and a fear of being vulnerable
I hate you more than I miss you
That's not true, I'd hate to miss you
Anywhere I go anywhere you've been before
I get the chance to say goodbye
Or hello I mean you don't call you don't write
You know I've been up for forty days and forty nights and all my fears have multiplied
By the silence in your eyes
Better hide your love, hide your love
Don't let it slip away, don't let it slip away
When It Lands - Calivada
Peak Calivada. In the middle of their on and iff relationship when everything is good, and sure maybe the good feelings are just the partying and the rush, and sure maybe things have started to fall apart again, maybe there's a longing, a deep issue of missing the other so much but never seeming to be around d them that ruins it everytime but maybe they don't have to think about that right now
Sugar city
Pretty magic
Got me good vibes
Thank God I ain't driving
Traffic vision
Blurred blue bleedin'
That's a black out ladder
It don't matter anyhow
I'm climbing
Keep my good vibes
And check coats for cool climates
In common we got
Good friends rolled light on split ends
Pretty magic
Traffic addicts
And I never call back when my friends all looking at me in the car
'Cause it'd be all they wanna talk about
Oh you tryna to get a deal? A deal? A deal
Sorry on the real
But my eyes and my ears don't work well
And the floor keeps sliding out my heels
I can't feel 'em am I still dreaming?
Painkillers - Colorado
Just generally, him and addictions and struggles with living
Living just comes with a bit of heartache
Heartache comes with a bit of young faith
Faith stays young till your heart get broken
Hope grows up to become someday
Recktify - New York
Just- The fast paced tempo and the lyrics that barely have time to breath and the constant shift in topics lends itself to the atmosphere of a city like NYC, and the temperament of New York himself
Especially the end, it reads to me like overstimulation maybe in a meeting and it's so much and going so fast and maybe he's arguing only to end up being pulled away from a fight He barely remembers starting
You're making a scene
You're making a scene baby
To wreck the scene
To wreck the scene
To rekt
Possum Queen - California/NY/Florida
And this is a thing to be further expanded on, but New York and his failed relationships in the ways of being a little bit unstable and commitment issues
Like him spending winters with Florida, having flings, but never settling and fearing his touch in any other season. Or a past relationship with California where they both were shit and maybe it was the intimacy of knowing eachothers issues so deeply but it's missed. Not in the way they'd do it again, but that they cannot hate eachother, and they loved eachother while it lasted, and maybe they'd be able to try again but for know it's tired smiles and small limes that allude to knowing more then they let on
This will last forever
And when it doesn't, love it for what it is
Don't miss it the way I do
The way I used to
If you love it, love it for what it's been
Don't miss it
Don't wish it back
Don't wish it'd last 'cause if it doesn't
Love it for what it is
Don't miss it the way I do
Don't miss it
Don't miss it the way I miss you
Polite Company - Mississippi
If I'm being honest most of this was cause ballerina Sippi, but honestly vibes anyway
I only want what I can't have
If you love me, give me nothing
Nothing

I continue my agenda that TTPD is secretly a western album, I swear—
God. This song. This song.
At this point, I should put a boiler plate disclaimer that I understand these songs are very much about Taylor's life, and this one especially so. It's all about scrutiny, about the press and the media circus of being a child in the spotlight, about not being able to grow up (you stay the same age you get famous at in the public's eye, to paraphrase Swift.) It's about the mental side effects of that, of the suffering she admits to hiding: I want to snarl and show you just how disturbed this has made me.
I think there is an expectation that people (any people, not just celebrities) should only show signs of distress when they are at rock bottom. If you're functioning, if you're getting out of bed most days and still brushing your teeth, etc, you aren't depressed enough to complain. Who's Afraid of Little Old Me is Swift striking back at that mindset, that actually, she shouldn't have to perform rock bottom ( because she seems done with performing peak happiness ) 24/7.
However, I really want to dive into the imagery of the song, and then maybe elaborate on it too much.
I'd be remiss to say that I'm writing this the day after she performed it live for the first time, and I am so utterly obsessed with the live performance. The lights, the mirrored platform giving the appearance of levitation, and say they didn't do it to hurt me—
BUT WHAT IF THEY DID?
In general, that section of the bridge is my favorite. I've already referenced it twice! To give context, the full line is: So tell me everything is not about me, but what if it is? And say they didn't do it to hurt me, but what if they did? I want to snarl and show you just how disturbed this has made me.
( That is followed by the line that has become a meme, and I wrote a whole post being annoyed at that. It will forever rot in my drafts. )
The speaker's description feels like hypervigilence, the kind caused by a life time of whispers and daggers behind your back. If you've ever been the center of a workplace drama, or the odd kid out, or the New Person in a club or activity, or just have anxiety, you know this feeling well. You know the feeling of asking - is this about me?
I love the phrasing of I want to snarl, because it shows that she is expected not to. She is expected to... Actually. Let me set this up.
There's a parallel to her country contemporary Miranda Lambert's Mama's Broken Heart. Lambert details allowing herself to be dramatic and heart broken after she feels like her life went up in flames. Where Swift's speaker enacts supernatural revenge, Lambert's is more mundane (cutting her bangs with scissors, hunting him down at the bar in their small town.) The bridge, here, describes the expectation that is put upon young women:
Powder your nose, paint your toes / Line your lips and keep 'em closed / Cross your legs, dot your eyes / And never let 'em see you cry
Swift's speaker, jilted and in pain not just from her lover (the who's who of who's that) but also from the scrutiny she's placed under (by her community, her friends, maybe even the press) has decided that she will no longer be the picture perfect woman. She will no longer bow to their whims, and is executed by public opinion for it.
So I leap from the gallows and I'll levitate down your street.
This very strong imagery.
Historically, women who have been hanged are expected to act a certain way. We often think of witch trials, but women have also been executed for crimes like murder and theft. They are to act penitent, to appeal for public approval with their final breaths. If they serve as anti-examples, begging for God's forgiveness and showing other women to behave, how to not make their mistakes, then they are granted posthumous grace.
But speaking of witch trials. Women and men who were accused of witchcraft were not witches, not in the modern sense of the word, or the historical one. Some were midwives, some were just poor women, old women who had things their neighbors wanted to take. Some were widows, and some were just disliked. It had nothing to do with their "crimes," and all to do with wanting to get rid of someone "unseemly."
The witch trials are often used as emblems of sexism - because they were. They were a tool of patriarchal oppression against women who fell outside the system, for one reason or another. ( I'd also like to note this oppression went doubly strong against women and men of color. It's a very loaded topic. )
The imagery also makes me think of Margaret Atwood's Half-Hanged Mary, a fictionalization of the real life Mary Webster. Webster was accused of witchcraft by Phillip Smith, and taken to be hanged in Hadley, Massachusetts. Mary, a woman in her approximate 60s, survived the whole night, was supposedly buried, and still emerged alive.
Atwood's fictionalization has the same spite, the same rage as Who's Afraid of Little Old Me, "Tough luck, folks, / I know the law: / you can't execute me twice / for the same thing. How nice." By the end of the poem, she has become the witch they accused of her being.
Here, the speaker of Who's Afraid of Little Old Me does the same. Almost implied to be a ghost, but the imagery also implies a witch, a woman too powerful for the rope to kill - she decides to return to haunt her accusers, her killers. She crashes their party (there were often parties or auctions of the women's belongings)—
Like a record scratch as I scream — who's afraid of little old me?
She, too, has become what they accused of her being. I am what I am because they trained me.
Phillip Smith, by the by, didn't do so well. He disappears from the account around 1683. In The History of... Massachusetts Bay... by one Mr. Hutchinson, "...it happened that she survived and the melancholy man died." Webster went on to live for 14 years after her hanging.
It felt a very apt comparison to make.
There are other metaphors at play here - a media circus going on in the background, references to the stage animals that have killed their handler for their mistreatment. The title is a reference to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, a play about how lives are so complex behind closed doors.
But in the end, I think it all furthers that same metaphor.
The pain of being in the public eye for too long has hurt the speaker in ways that the audience can't understand, because they have not lived it. Very few people are at that level of fame and scrutiny, and while a non-famous audience can relate in some ways, the speaker feels the only way to get the severity across is to invoke death and false hangings.
She is asking for them to see her as powerful, but also as human, and flawed, and hurt.

Hello everyone!! We're looking to pick up possibly one or two mods to help with the workload, if anyone is interested! It's been a bit difficult to maintain 13 posts/day between the two of us, and with enough help, we should be able to maintain that queue rate or maybe even increase it a little! There's also some things that would be really nice to do if all of the time we spent dedicated to the blog wasn't just making sure the queue didn't empty out haha
If you're interested, please send an ask off-anon, and I'll DM you from my main when I can! If you don't allow DMs from your main, you can also give a different way to contact you as well in your ask! (Like the URL of a sideblog with DMs open!) Thank you !!
More info under the cut!!
The main modding responsibilities include:
Gathering album information into the planning spreadsheet.
Taking that information and drafting the posts to queue them.
Less importantly, helping keep track of links for posted polls and copying over the poll results.
These can largely be completed independently, aside from any obvious ordering restrictions (can't queue a post if you don't have the data put together), so if, for any reason, you're only able to do one of the first two on a temporary or even permanent basis, it would still be a lot of help.
In terms of technological requirements, all information can be accessed on websites free-of-charge, two require a (free) account to get access to the album images, and everything can be done strictly in-browser if needed. We do use Google Sheets for the planning sheet, but I don't think you need a Google account to edit/access it. I do not think this is something that is reasonable to do on mobile, so you would need access to a desktop/laptop computer.
I think things can be made considerably easier if you can use some non-browser programs. I personally use a Windows 10 computer + Firefox for my own workflow, but things aren't impossible without it for sure! There's always more than one way to do things. I have no idea what potential difficulties may occur for someone who is a Mac + Safari user, for instance. Oh! And in terms of communication, Discord is best, so it would be helpful if that's something you use as well!
Also we're all here to have fun so like this isn't a job much less a role with strict expectations, so it doesn't have to be like a primary responsibility for you or anything like that!
Also apologies if I take a bit to get back to anyone who does send a message! I'm multitasking between my job and some other obligations so I might not see any notifications right away, and I need to coordinate adding any new mods with my co-mod so there might be a bit of waiting involved unfortunately!! Thank you so much to anyone who reaches out though !!

Happy New Year! 2023 Recap, 2024 Resolutions
Seeing as my avatar for this blog is New Year Takumi, it feels fitting that I close out the year by reflecting on what's taken place. My personal circumstances this year have been challenging, and so far there isn't any sign of that changing. Fortunately, that hasn't stopped me from accomplishing a decent amount.
2023 Recap
First of all, @botwmusical was able to release our long-anticipated (by us) Highlights album! Download it here if you haven't. We worked so hard putting it together, and none of it could have been done without @dianapocalypse, @arrispect and the brilliant @wanderingnightingale. Hearing my music sung by our wonderful performers was an experience unlike any other.
I also wrote a first draft of the above's full script, and chronicled the journey at #sftwember. In hindsight, that tag would have looked better for a September project, rather than a November one... but it got written nonetheless!
On a more personal note, I got to enjoy a lot of new media this year which I really enjoyed. Persona 3, the Tellius games for Fire Emblem, of course Fire Emblem Engage, and maybe most notably Genshin Impact! That's right, I'm a Neuvillette main now and always... until I pull Kazuha. (Between him and Takumi, can you tell I have a type?)
2024 Resolutions
My resolutions for the coming year are as follows:
Write more! I've been planning a series of collab fics with a friend, which I'm very excited for, and there's a big Three Houses project on the horizon that I can't wait to take off. At long last, I'm getting back into Fódlan, and so far it's looking glorious.
Finalise the @botwmusical script, and start arranging material for the full version of the show. We aren't sure what form this will take yet, but there's some incredibly strong stuff that I think people will love.
Produce a rough draft for my next musical adaptation, and write a good amount of the material. My creative Vision has never been stronger. At the very least, I think it warrants a trial period. Hydro. In all seriousness, the opening number is coming along very very well, and I'm excited to share it with you all.
Another personal note: resume playing D&D! I have a great group I was playing with last year, and I'd love to get back into it again.
TALK TO MY MUTUALS. I realised I've had my incoming messages switched off since I made my blog. This must be amended ASAP. Please be my friend.
Just as I did last year, I'm going to tag a few friends. If you feel like it, tell us about your plans for the coming year and reflect on this past one! No pressure—and this is open to anyone!
@yupuffin @circle-bircle @dianapocalypse @ptewie @wanderingnightingale @arrispect @tolstayas @blight-eyed

🍁✨Autumn Troupe Headcanons!✨🍁
Hooray for more uncensored swearing! Sorry, this took so long! It’s hard to think of things for the Autumn Troupe since I don’t know them super well!
🍁🧡Banri Settsu🧡🍁
Whenever it's time for practice, Banri begins by smacking the back of Juza's head! (Not super hard, but enough for it to piss him off)
Diluc main, that is all. Before he got Diluc he was an Amber main, and somehow was good. Still uses her every once in a while!
Slightly intimidated by languages sometimes, I dunno how to explain it, so hopefully the dialogue does!
“Banri, come here for a second.”
“Hell no, I’m in the middle of a match right now.”
“Banri.”
“Sit your ass down and wait, Chikage! I’m busy!”
"Halika dito! Huwag kang humintay na papatayin kita at iwanan kitang dumugo sa lansangan! Inumin ng mga aso ang iyong dugo at kukunin ng mga uwak ang iyong laman. Gusto mo yan?!" ("Come here! Don't wait for me to kill you and leave you bleeding in the street! Dogs will drink your blood and crows will take your flesh. Do you want that ?!" ) I'm unsure of the translation, since the filipino was from Irumaaaaa_saaaaamaaaaa's comment on my Ao3! I just put it into google translate
“Damn! Fine, fine, I’m comin! Chill out!”
His older sister gave him a leopard plushie when he was a kid, which is why he’s fucking obsessed with animal prints!
Plays drums and almost broke the coffee table because he “jammed too hard” on it!
Constantly messing up Taichi’s hair, or he’s drumming to songs on his head.
*boom boom bap boom boom bap*
“Buddy, you're a boy, make a big noise, playing in the street, gonna be a big man someday! You got mud on your face, you big disgrace! Kicking your can all over the place, singin'-”
“We will, we will rock you!”
“Haha! Hell yeah!”
🍁💜Juza Hyodo💜🍁
Likes carrying Muku or Kumon on his shoulders! Sometimes they still parade around!
“Are you sure about this, Ju-chan?”
“Yeah, you’re real light, y’know.”
“What the hell are you doing, Hyodo? Practice is soon.”
Chews on things a lot when he’s nervous! He always has gum or a lollipop to avoid chewing on his shirt, his nails and other inedible things!
Uses shorter Mankai members as an armrest, but only the ones who are okay with it! He’s polite like that.
On nights where he just can’t sleep, he’ll go on walks or drive around on his motorcycle!
Terrible with eye contact and looking like he’s paying attention. Sakyo has to snap his fingers at him to make sure he’s listening!
Y’know the awkward sibling hug from Gravity Falls, he and Kumon have done that...a lot. It’s not actually awkward though, they just liked the show!
“Awkward sibling hug?”
“...Awkward sibling hug.”
*embrace*
“...pat, pat.”
....
“Hyodos, what the hell?”
🍁💖Taichi Nanao💖🍁
Cried twice when he got his piercings, the first time was because he was very, very afraid, the second time was because he was so happy that he looked good with them!
Has Heelys! One time, he tried to 'heely' into the rehearsal room, but he immediately fell over!
Plays the ukulele! He wanted to play guitar because he saw someone serenading their partner with it at school! He borrowed Masumi's guitar but bar chords suck and his hands are kinda small, so he settled for the uke!
"Aghhh! How do you play that! That hurts my fingies!"
"I have bigger hands and more experience."
"But you're only like an inch taller than me!"
"Height doesn’t really have anything to do with this."
Has a Tiktok! He doesn't post often, it's more for looking at memes or sick outfits. (He does the dances though! He's pretty good at them but they're all in his drafts since he's not super confident in them!)
Y’know how kids crawl up the stairs really fast. He does that. Constantly. Kazunari joins in, sometimes. It pisses Sakyo off a lot, but he gave up on trying to get them to stop.
"Taicchan, what are you doing?"
"Kazu-kun! I got the zoomies!"
"Nice! Can I join ya?"
"For sure!"
*Rapid thumping up the stairs*
"Aren't you gonna stop them, Sakyo?"
"...If I had that ability, they would've stopped a long time ago. Those idiots don't listen."
He LOVES Sk8 The Infinity! Langa's his favourite character! He's also probably a Reki kinnie!
🍁💙Omi Fushimi💙🍁
(It's blue like his regular shirt and Tumblr doesn't have any other colours ;-;)
Despite being tone-deaf, he hums a lot when he cooks! No one seems to mind it!
Enjoys scrapbooking! He kind of prefers scrapbooks to albums, since scrapbooks have a more homemade vibe, you know?
Gives the best hugs, and tends to hold hands with the younger members when they cross the street!
Regularly has this conversation!
“Banri, have you eaten?”
“I dunno Omi, have YOU eaten?”
“...I have. But that's not what I’m concerned about.”
“...I had a granola bar like, an hour ago.”
“...I’m making you something.”
When he first joined the company, he took notes on what everyone liked and didn't like to eat, plus if they had allergies! He still has it, he just doesn't need to use it anymore!
I feel like something like this has happened once!
“Ah, Omi! Can you help me grab something?”
“Oh, sure. What do you need, Sakuya?”
“Homare asked me to get some of that tea, but I can’t rea-”
*lifts Sakuya like Simba*
“Ah! Omi, haha! What are you doing?”
“Sorry, I couldn’t help it! Do you want me to stop?”
“Oh, no, it’s fine! It’s kinda fun actually.”
🍁💛Sakyo Furuichi💛🍁
Absolutely blind without his glasses, like it’s really bad. He walked into a doorframe without his glasses. Thankfully, no one noticed (he thinks).
He has a bit of bubble-wrap in his a pocket all the time and sometimes he uses it as a threat! (Hopefully that made sense...)
“Settsu, move over.”
“I literally can’t! Your fat ass is taking too much space!”
*pop*
“Just scoot your lazy ass over.”
*pop*
“I can’t I already-”
*pop*
“...Alright, I get it! I’ll shut up! Jeez, how is that so threatening...”
“...Asshole.”
*pop*
“...Sorry.”
Definitely told Azami that Santa wasn’t real when he was like 6.
Sakoda got him a mug that said #1 Dad but he crossed it out and replaced ‘Dad’ with ‘Aniki’! Sakyo still drinks out of it, sometimes!
Azami also made him a friendship bracelet when he was a lot younger. Sakyo doesn’t wear it (because it doesn’t fit him anymore) but he still has it! He likes rubbing the beads between his fingers.
Good at trivia! Like, really good. He somewhat enjoys Trivia Murder Party. (I just watched a play through and skipped to a random question, I have no idea if it’s actually hard lol.)
“Which body of water connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean?”
“Wh- How are we supposed to know that?!”
*Sakyo answers ‘The Strait of Gibraltar’ and is the only one who answers correctly*
“Fuck, my thumb slipped.”
“That shouldn’t be allowed. Sakyo’s shitty and old, he shouldn’t be able to know and remember things.”
“Oi, brat. I’m not that old. You’re not the one who got the answer right.”
“You’re not the one who literally never learned this!”
🍁❤️Azami Izumida❤️🍁
Has smacked too many cans/cups out of Itaru and Tsuzuru’s hands!
“Wh-”
“Drink actual water. And jeez, go take a nap or something. Your skin is even worse than I thought it could get. Aren’t you supposed to be the responsible one in the Spring Troupe?”
“Ah... I guess, you are right. Thanks for looking out for me.”
“W-well! W-we can’t have you on stage looking like a raisin! S-so!”
Often criticizes Izumi’s eyeliner and ends up just doing it for her. N-not that he minds or anything!
Played Love Nikki at some point, I do not take that much criticism.
Because I think the troupe/play themes are canon, he definitely helped with Shake the Shape and wrote some of RESPAWN!
Always has extra hair ties on him, even though most of the others don’t really need them. Most of the time, the hair ties end up being used for...other purposes.
“Ready.”
“What?”
“Aim.”
“Azami, I swear to whatever god is listening, if you fire that elasti-”
“Fire.”
“...You shitty brat-”
“Oh shi-”
Part of the ‘wears nail polish’ squad! He hates stickers. (Most of the time they somehow fall off) His go-to is an alternating pattern of black and red.

Your blpk post reminded me about how someone said that one direction (and honestly all pop acts) aren't a band, they're a brand and part of that brand is music. I think the fun part about kpop is how transparent it is about that, and as a result how much more proformative it can be than western acts because no one really pretends that they're just a group of friends who Just So Happened to stumble into a record contract. I don't get why some fans hate that, if I had my way they'd push it further. I want the concept and album direction designers to sit down and react to things the way they have the idols themselves reacting to the mvs. I feel like that'd be so much more interesting.
ding ding ding!! i agree with you, i think that one of the many unique things about kpop is that they are much more transparent about the performativity of it. i still don't think they're transparent enough, because they absolutely could be pushing stuff a lot farther. the idol industry has much more in common with musical theatre than a standard western pop act, which is not at all surprising considering that sk has a massive musical theatre scene. and when western pop acts do large scale performances, they very often use theatre designers; es devlin, who did a lot of work with beyonce and jayz, is a trained theatre designer. there is SO much crossover in any arts industry and we would be much better off, both as viewers and as workers if there was more acknowledgement that that crossover exists.
i too would LOVE to see more creative directors and designers talking about the concepts that they're working on, but the reality is that the people who work behind the scenes work behind them for a reason. we very often don't like attention on us, and although it is our job to be good communicators and negiotiators, that does not frequently translate to being entertaining for the camera. also, as a field we're extremely overworked and underpaid; no one has the time. this might be difficult to translate in a way that makes sense, but design isn't a location-based job in the way that performing is a location based job. in the most basic of senses, a performer only needs their body; they show up to where they need to be with their main tool by default because your meatsack carries you through space. and when they leave that location, their job stops. yes there are other intricacies, like doing outside line rehearsals or vocal work or whatever, but if an actor so chooses (and they sometimes do), they don't have to work outside of the designated performance space. a designer of course has to also work in that performance space obviously, but they also have to source everything that enters that space. the pre-production meetings, the concept decisions, the research process, all the sketching and drafting, finding all your materials, building everything, that all has to be done outside of performer's rehearsal time. the hours are long and there are a lot of jobs within being a designer and we just don't have a lot of free time. i think there would definitely be an audience for it if companies started to do more interviews and things with the creative teams, but the cost benefit analysis is not in favour; our time is a lot better spent (literally) working, sadly.
