thinking about how freddie mercury wrote “somebody to love” in ‘76 about how difficult it was for him as a gay man to find a romantic partner in a world full of internalized and externalized homophobia... but obviously he wasn’t out at the time so while the song became really popular, very few people actually understood it! and now lil nas x just released “that’s what i want” about that same uniquely queer experience, but from his perspective as an out gay black man in 2021... thinking about how he felt comfortable using male pronouns and even making a music video showing himself in a (sexually explicit!!) relationship with another man...
