The Wastes (2016)
a spark, a light
in the far distances of your eyes
can you see it? i doubt it
as much as the sun could burn the sun
or the ocean could drown the ocean
this is how i'd like the world to end
with hot dry winds on deserted streets
and people wandering empty lands
doing only what they can
lovely sirens calling from their perches atop ambulances and police cars
their sharp shrill songs driving men to madness
and all the pictures of beautiful people with beautiful straight white teeth, men and women all airbrushed up
smiling down from subway walls and gallery halls
you will throw them down into your pyres
making you into a liar
you were one of them, right?
this is how i'd like the world to end
with hot fierce winds on deserted streets
and people wandering vast wide lands
searching for something that ain't sand
this can't go on! the people say, thinking that there is no other way
as the cars laugh and horn all day long, their headlights flashing brilliant grins
and the politicians all have their heads bowed in supplication
to that big red button
death. death! cry out the tvs
but you and me
we just sit here dreamin' of the things we'd like to be
this is how i'd like the world to end
with nuclear winds on deserted streets
and people wandering cold dark lands
lost within god's great big plan
you blink and the sun falters
you drink and the oceans rise
in your footsteps, the army comes
in your love, the people roar
a spark alight.
the world turns.
but
the sun, your eyes, the cities-
they burn.
