Okay so the solid theme of this post is like. dusk n ladder's relationship sorry you dont get funky backstory or whatever

they met TWICE. once at 12 and 23 (both pre-transition). and again at 22 and 32 (post-transition, right before dusk's birthday--its like ladder was a little gift :) and also a neusance)

Neither realized they met each other before. it was a one-time "hi im (dusk) and I work at this lab. you are a shitty 12 year old who ran off from their mom and decided to sit with me doing paperwork for hours. I will not see you again!"

and then they see each other again :) both the realiest versions of themselves SO FAR

yknow that post that went "i didn't know friends with benefits meant that the benefit was sex." they are Like That.

Since ladder technically has his own place (that's LORE. but he was given a condo to make long story short). and Dusk lives at the facility (which treats her like shit and shes been working for 15 years with BARELY any promotion compared to her scientist peers), so. yknow. Dusk has a place to stay that's an actual home :)

i like to imagine the setting is in Pennsylvania somewhere but idk jack shit about the state someone help. give me lore. (but ladder is closer to the city--while the facility is located in the appalachias. there's an underground tram system that's COOL AS SHIT promise).

now onto the unhealthy sad part: they both have uneven power dynamics over each other in terms of both

A. Dusk's age/intellegence (age is less of a factor moreso shes RLLY SMART but nobody takes her seriously :(. ladder is dumb as bricks fs fs)

and B. Ladder coming from innate privilege. Rich, White family (owning the scientific research lab they work at--nepotism got him the job in the first place), etc etc etc. The only stipulation (outside of regular ol nurture) is that he's trans.

their transness is what evens them out--they can Relate on that one factor. Almost nothing else. And that's unifying, in a way. not the healthiest, but its There and it Matters

Dusk grew up the "runt" of the family, and even still despite now having the most powerful position in the world compared to her upbringing, is still treated poorly due to circumstance.

Ladder got everything handed to him--until he made the choice to come out and live as a man as he knew he should.

While dusk had nothing to lose, knowing she'd be treated as she was regardless, transitioned without fear. She was a woman--there was nothing to get out of (or that would hinder her) that decision, so she picked what was right for her.

Ladder had so much to lose but he did it anyway, and lives partly-stealth because of it--along with overly making himself a gay stereotype to excuse his femininity that he so desperately misses being apart of (his natural hair color, makeup, etc. everything he stopped doing to appear more manly so he wouldn't get invalidated).

He picked his name because it sounded dumb. just like he felt he was for transitioning when he had so much going for him. there's a *guilt* to his existence.

Dusk helps him shake that. just a little. She's his first real friend who doesn't see him for his title or his family or anything else (partly because he. didn't say anything abt it but SHH).

he's her first too. they are franeds :)
