anon i need you to know that this ask made me so excited i just got up walked around my chair and sat back down again WOOHOO. okay so dean is DEFO a trans guy to me, of all the scars on his body that cas heals dean never lets him near his top surgery scars because they are so Him and so important. and oh this man can fit SO MUCH GENDER in him and i am obsessed with him for it. i do truly think cowboys are perfect for dean because they are such a classic symbol of american masculinity (aka what dean was supposed to be) but have since become continually subverted by the queer community and so exaggerated in their properties that they loop back around to camp (what dean is both in the show and in meta). and so dean is very intrinsically linked to cowboys to me especially in his perceptions of gender but we know this already so now we move on to my next topic of interest which is PIRATES. maybe this starts to develop after he meets benny (THEE vampirate of all time) who dean of course feels very gay for. and benny's high waisted trousers and jaunty cap and life at sea obviously are all highly enticing for dean. but also thinking about how pirates of the golden age who were often tight knit communities founded by a combined hatred for the state and demanded equality on their ships. like i have a post in my drafts about how pirates are the perfect parallel for hunters for how their communities function and i know that's not massively about dean's gender but dean externalises so much of himself and so much of him is performance that i think his gender feelings probably change depending on who is around him and so if he sees pirates reflected in the ways hunters work then he'll start to have gender feelings about that. and ofc cowboys and pirates are often linked together as strong but extremely camp icons but also i think that pirates are often traditionally gayer than cowboys too (think the villainised campness of captain hook and his gal pal smee in peter pan) so once dean has become more comfortable with feeling like a cowboy in a Gay Gender Way he moves onto pirates and builds from there. but also in the traditionally masculine way when he's younger cowboys and pirates are obviously aspirational points of masculinity for lil trans dean. god there's just so much potential for all of this
