Y’know, even if the Teacher Theory didn’t already hold less water than a colander, I’d still dislike it. If Edel’s goal was to scare off the previous teacher — and ONLY to scare them off — then there were so many ways she could’ve gone about it that didn’t put her directly in danger.
For example, she could’ve ordered Kostas to fake an attack, just run in and cause some property damage to send the teacher running. If she didn’t want him to know the true purpose of the mission, she would just have to tell him to destroy the students’ supplies with no need to be subtle. Like, there was no reason to put herself in very real danger when a few axed wagons or tents would do.
On the other hand, if she intended to assassinate Claude and Dimitri, it would make far more sense to put herself in danger, too. See, if bandits attacked the future leaders of Fodlan, but one was miraculously unharmed while the other two died? That might raise some red flags and invite unwanted scrutiny. But if Edelgard was placed in the same danger, then the “unfortunate” deaths of the other two House leaders would be seen as a random act of violence. Is it risky? Yes. Would it destabilize the other countries enough that her upcoming war would be a cake-walk? Also yes.
In short, I think that the Teacher Theory, while making Edelgard look less ruthless and ambitious, also turns her into a massive moron. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’d rather Edelgard be a badass, ruthless conqueror who’s willing to kill innocent people in the name of her ambitions than a stupid, naive, shortsighted idiot.
