Thirteen Era Rewatch: Can You Hear Me?

I'm re-watching Thirteen's era in lead up to the Centenary and since this is likely going to be my last full re-watch for a while I thought I'd do a post on each ep where I just go over all the things I love, hate or just have some general thoughts on.

Zellin appearing in the TARDIS is cool. Also I don’t usually notice music, especially in this era, but the music whenever Zellin shows up is cool too

I love Tibo

Low-key who came up with the finger thing bc it is genuinely so weird. I don’t dislike but like…

This moment is funny but also I do think it’s kinda A Thing that Graham is less trusting/in awe of the Doctor that Ryan and (especially) Yaz are. Like at the end of 11.04 he says she’s all right or something, at the start 11.10 he doesn’t care about her telling him no

I like Ryan’s nightmare and how they kinda start getting into the reasons why he is eventually gonna want to stop travelling. Also like Graham he’s less attached to the Doctor so part of his reason for leaving literally just being like, I miss my dad and friends make sense imo

Thirteen thinking she was winning but then Zellin being like no you’re not lol is kinda cringe and awkward (in a good way, like he got he good). And also she is so feral in this moment idek how to describe it

The animation is nice, cool way to explain the story

The way 13 gets the sonic out of her pocket when she’s tied up is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen lmao I kinda hate it

Do people think Yaz was intending to kill herself? Bc I kinda don’t get that vibe? Like I think it’s maybe something that Could have happened but I don’t think she ran off with the intention of doing that idk. It’s almost giving kid runs away bc they’re stressed and then comes back when they realise there’s nowhere else for them to go except it’s like, a bit more than that bc the police are involved

When Yaz goes to that police officer’s how and she’s like ‘You probs don’t remember me, my name’s Yasmin Khan’ and the officer starting saying Yaz’s name at the same time with her I get literal goosebumps idk what it is is, I just love. That whole scene is great imo

You can tell 13 is trying to listen SO HARD

That scene where Graham brings up his cancer is definitely uncomfortable and idk, I understand if ppl don’t love it, but I don’t think it’s as bad as some people make it out to be. 13 IS awkward and rarely talks about deeper stuff, it makes sense she might struggle with this.

I like Yaz’s and Ryan’s chat at the end. Yaz is so unbothered about the fact she might be missing stuff happening ar hope whereas Ryan has started to really worry about. Interesting contrast idk

I’ve always thought this episode might’ve been better if there was only one immortal and they were targeting 13 and co for fun rather than to make another one escape just so more time could be spent on their nightmares and now it effects them idk, like in my head this ep has always had more stuff in than it needed to, and I remember it not being at all what I was expecting when it first aired but I do think it’s good and it has grown on me with each watch and I love that we found out more about Yaz, tho going into it more might’ve been nice even if I do think what we got did get the point across. And I like that it sets up Ryan’s worries and eventual departure. Overall a good ep but probs ranked fairly low in my 13 era ranking
