Hi hi! It's your Secret Santa again ^^ My family moved to Canada, near Toronto. Singapore is pretty ideally located... The Americas are so far from the rest of the world. (Fun fact, the time it takes to travel from Toronto to Vancouver is the same it took to travel from Singapore to India [Delhi specifically]... It still boggles the mind!) I haven’t actually travelled that much, especially in the sense of tourism. When I lived in Singapore, we would go to India every year, but that was to spend time with family. I’ve been to Malaysia, Germany and Switzerland, pre-move. Then after, some places in the USA, Canada, the UK and Indonesia.
I actually want to move back to Singapore... Maybe not permanently because who knows where life takes us, but at least for a few years. I feel like such a fraud saying I’m Singaporean because I don’t really know the culture. One thing I regret is not having the Singaporean accent! But I don’t know, lots of people say I don’t have a Canadian accent, so maybe I never would have picked it up? My dad also only ever has an accent when he speaks to his family or friends from there, otherwise it’s absent as well. It’s weird... But such a tangible thing to show a connection.
Haha... I don’t know how to ask this because it’s always awkward and I don’t want to be rude... But what’s your ethnic/racial background? I bet you can guess I’m Indian, specifically Northern. What was the second language you learned in school? I remember starting to learn Mandarin, but if we had stayed longer, I would have probably elected to learn Malay since that’s what my father’s family speaks.
Do you have a big family? It’s nice you all take vacations together... Do you all have the same travelling style? Have you ever travelled by yourself? (1/?)
hi ss! ✨ oh trust me, the singaporean accent is nothing to miss lmao. but i guess it’s something that really identifies you with a country. whenever i go overseas, i can always spot a fellow singaporean from a mile away just from the way they speak 😂 since you said you don’t really have a canadian accent either, then i’m curious what your accent actually sounds like!
i’m half chinese on my dad’s side and that’s the side we meet with the most often, so my second language in school is mandarin but i really struggled with it my whole schooling life 😔 both my parents don’t speak mandarin so beyond my grandma, i don’t really use it much in my daily life :(
my immediate family is just me, my older brother and my parents. we live together so we’re close! we initially had plans to go on a holiday this year with my extended family before my grandma got too old to move around as much, but of course those plans fell though. we’re pretty easygoing travellers - my mum’s usually in charge of itinerary planning and during the holiday itself, my dad’s kinda the alpha type so he’ll take the lead lmao. i’ve tried travelling by myself but it’s not my no. 1 way to travel, i still prefer being with company 💖 how about you?
