UMK is happening this weekend, where Finland will select their entry for Eurovision! Here's my ranking of the participants:
Käärijä – Cha Cha Cha
Benjamin – Hoida mut
Portion Boys – Samaa taivasta katsotaan
KUUMAA – Ylivoimainen
Robin Packalen – Girls Like You
Lxandra – Something To Lose
Keira – No Business On The Dancefloor
These songs have been out for a while now, and I've done my best to avoid fan perceptions of them, and succeeded for all but one specific song, which I feel like I see people talking about every time I go into the Eurovision tag! And, you know what, I agree with the people who love it! Cha Cha Cha is fantastic – the perfect level of chaotic to be exciting and fun and keep you on your toes listening to it without ever feeling messy. It's ridiculously catchy, from the little blaring synth hook in the verses to the melody of 'Cha Cha Cha' on the chorus – it wedges itself in my brain and makes me reach for the repeat button! It's an interesting track, with influences from metal to dubstep, all very intense, which I love! I just hope this song comes across well live, I need Käärijä to give a killer performance and pair it with an equally exciting visual staging!
Even though for me Käärijä is head and shoulders above the rest, the other’s aren’t slumping either! I especially like Benjamin’s Hoida mut – it's got a great 80s throwback sound and is very high energy, it makes me want to dance along! I love the chorus, the tune there sounds so good to my ears. It might not be Cha Cha Cha, but Hoida mut is an enjoyable, catchy number and in another selection could easily be my favourite.
Finland have nailed it this year – this is such a good selection, with a range of genres and styles, but everything is well put-together and good quality, even the songs which don't appeal so much to me. Pending a decent live performance, I desperately need to see Käärijä bring Cha Cha Cha to Eurovision, but I don't think Finland will do too badly with most of their other options here either! I'm excited to see what they pick!
