i would love for a scenario where main versed cynic has to be the good guy.

not because he wants to help people. not because its the right thing to do. because he doesnt care for any of that (why should he? nobody ever gave a damn about him). no - his motive would be strongly dependent on a specific person he cares about. someone he loves who DOES CARE about that. he wouldnt be able to understand why. he couldn't understand why. but if its that important to them...

cynic is selfish like that. but, his selfishness can turn to selflessness. the potential exists.
