"Who Am I?"
This is a question have asked almost daily since I was 12. As I have grown older I have seen myself grow and change as a human in ways I would not have foreseen through my younger eyes. For Module 2's first week we have been asked to reflect on who we are and how that might affect our creative practice.
We were introduced to the concept of "Knolling" during the keynote lecture to introduce module 2 and encouraged to make our own, I have made my examples below. Knolling is the practice of scanning your environment for items you use in the everyday and organising them at right angles neatly. This was initially used by mountaineers as a way of making sure they had all the equipment they needed to plan a trek. As art overtook practice, this became a trend on social media as there is something pleasing to the brain about organising things neatly. I found this came to me naturally as, even as a child, I always loved organising my belongings. My clothes were always neatly folded and my toys organised in a stacker by size. Never once was I asked by my parents to tidy my room as it has always come naturally.
Tumblr media
For my first Knoll above, as initially guided, I emptied my rucksack and collected things I never leave the house without as a means of identifying aspects of myself. Going from left to right and top to bottom I have thoughts on what each means to me. 1. My DM boots. I have been wearing Doc Marten boots for many years, I value their hard-wearing nature without compromising comfort. 2. My sketchbook. As a creative person I try not to leave the house without something to make a mark on and record my existence in some way. 3. My watch. Many people have remarked how old fashioned it is for me to wear an ordinary watch. I have worn one for so long I feel naked without one. I am an old fashioned person, I have known this for many years. 4. My cup. I love an enamel cup, again, old fashioned, but if I am out walking and there is a clean stream, I have had no issue with taking a sip of sourced mountain water. 5. Sunglasses. I have a certain sensitivity to extremes of light and always try to carry a pair in my bag if I can. 6. A book. "You're never alone with a book in your bag." Words of wisdom I followed for years and always keep a book on my person for those moments when I am alone and need to escape tedium. 7. My wallet. Self explanatory really, even if I don't have cash on me, can't leave home without a way of purchasing and carrying ID.~ 8. My phone. I chose my phone like I chose my shoes - hard-wearing and comfortable. It is a rudimentary smartphone but I don't like the flimsy nature of mainstream smartphones. 9. Keys. Always need a way to get home. The key-ring was a gift from my partner and a reminder of what brought us together. 10. My cap. I am a bald man. There is no escape from this fact. Whether I need warmth in the cold or protection from the sun, a bald man needs a hat to replace what he has lost. 11. My pencil roll. Again, because organising comes so naturally to me, every pencil is organised by number and shading value then on to other mark making implements.
Tumblr media
From emptying out my rucksack and organising it's contents, I decided to elaborate on number 6 and knoll the books by the authors and artists from my shelves which have inspired me most. Again, from left to right and top to bottom; 1. H.P. Lovecraft anthology. I have long loved the weird and macabre, but in discovering the works of this author, it was like coming home. I am yet to find a more inspiring author when it comes to cosmic horror and antiquarian writing. 2. Mythology (Edith Hamilton). I brought this book as a beautiful tome of Greek myths that were introduced to me as a boy. Even now, ancient mythology still inspires and moves peoples the world over. To me, they still bring a sense of wonder to the cold scientific world of the 21st century. 3. Le Morte d'Arthur (Sir Thomas Mallory). Growing up in Cornwall I was quickly introduced to the legends of King Arthur and his connection to Tintagel. Firstly as knights in shining armour, but as I have grown up, I see the Celtic connection to the Arthurian tales and possibly even Roman connections to these long adored legends. 4. Norse Mythology (Helen A. Guerber). If the Greek myths were my entry drug, then the darkness of the Norse myths were my hard drugs. The Norse mythology has captured my mind and I have learned to see beyond the Wagner-esque stereotypes often associated with Germanic myths. 5. Watchmen (Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons). In this age of superhero saturated popular culture, Watchmen is the perfect antidote. Adding a level of psychological realism to the genre previously unheard of, Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons broke down the barriers to make people see how broken someone would have to be to become a costumed vigilante and how having actual superpower, might just turn a human mind to apathy and fatalism. This book changed my perceptions and I will always love it for that. 6. The Hobbit (J.R.R. Tolkien). As with so many children before, this book was my entry to the world of high fantasy as a child. I can't count the ways in which this love of fantasy has shaped who I am today. 7. Van Gogh (Complete works, Taschen). As, arguably, the most beloved popular artist in the world, Van Gogh took the pain of a life riddled with depression and mania and turned it into some of the most beautiful art ever created. I have long seen his story and work with inspiration. But honestly wouldn't know where to start with how to emulate such a mind. 8. Leonardo (Complete drawings, Taschen). Again, introduced to me years ago, the legend of this Renaissance polymath has continued to inspire me and excite me into adulthood. I long to create such finely detailed work but fear, due to my own impatience, such works are beyond my hands and mind. 9. Frankenstein (Mary Shelley). What can I say? My all-time favourite book I have read multiple times, the timeless tale of humanity's obsession to defeat death and control the science that made us. Mary Shelley redefined the Gothic genre with this ageless classic. 10. Sherlock Holmes (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle). Arguably the world's first superhero, these timeless tales of mystery solved by the impossibly intelligent Holmes and told to the reader by the implacable Dr. Watson, these classics have always brought me joy and comfort in knowing that I can always go to Baker Street when life is too hard. 11. Mort (Sir Terry Pratchett). Introduced to me as a teenager and revisited as an adult, the Discworld novels are the perfect "cup of tea" reading for escapism and comfort with old friends for me. Oft parodying the "Round-world", Pratchett's wit and scathing words are the perfect tonic to renew a love for our world. 12. Hellboy (Mike Mignola et al.) I love these graphic novels not only for their simplistic yet deeply effective artworks, but as a way of retelling old tales and folklore from all over the world that would otherwise be in danger of being forgotten. 13. The Last Wish (Andrzej Sapkowski). Again, another beautiful retelling of old tales while delivering a striking and meaningful narrative. Sapkowski weaves ancient folkloric monsters into the world of Geralt of Rivia alongside magics from Eastern Europe that, thanks to Globalisation, was in danger of being forgotten.
Tumblr media
Not wanting to concentrate entirely on what I read, I wanted to make one more Knoll for my hobbies and what rounds me out creatively. Again, from left to right and top to bottom: 1. Fedora. As mentioned previously, a bald man needs hats, I chose to wear a fedora as a reflection of myself. Smart and tidy but also practical and warm. Synonymous with adventurers and gangsters of 1930s pulp comics, I love my fedora but don't wear it too often for fear of ridicule. Possibly something I should try to remedy. 2. Wood Whittling kit. Another creative hobby of mine is wood whittling. I don't have a lot of space at home to practice wood working on a larger scale, so I opted to teach myself the art of shaping wood with blades. This has seen some progress over the short time I have been practicing, definitely something I enjoy the process of. 3. Lyre. A recent purchase but a long time desire. I have never had much luck with learning music, but from my love of Greek & Norse myths, the lyre plays a huge part in each culture. It's pentatonic scale means it will always produce a tune, no matter how basic. I have already learned a couple of basic tunes and it brings me a lot of joy. 4. Green tea pot. Some time ago, I was reading about the ancient teachings of Bushido from Japan. Among them I read that someone can dedicate their lives to perfecting a single art, from warfare to making the perfect pot of tea. I have sampled teas from all corners of the world and find it a humbling practice to keep mindful of. 5. Camera. My dad is a semi-professional photographer in his field. As a result of this photography as a hobby and passion has been a part of my life since I can remember. 6. Skyrim. I chose to knoll this as it represents my love for the storytelling medium of video games, nothing will replace books for me but I deeply enjoy games for the interactive escapism they provide. 7. Gameboy. As I grow older, my love for what is gone grows larger. I like to retro game as a reminder of what I used to see as world changing and awe-inspiring. I have found this exercise in Knolling both enjoyable and creative but find it leaves me with more questions than answers about who I am as a creative.
