are you sure self-pity is a luxury you can afford?                       meme * @iwasburning​

               he makes a sound at the back of his throat ,  half between a huff and a laugh.  rather than responding ,  he huddles closer to the fire they’ve built ,  seeking whatever warmth it will give him in the dead of night.  sounds of sticks cracking in the forest behind them reach his ears ,  but he doesn’t turn around like he usually would ,  searching for a familiar face when he already knows he won’t find one.  the hope he once had that melanie would make it back to him has long since burned out ,  now reduced to a pit of simmering coal in the pit of his stomach ,  its life dwindling with every breath he takes.  the fact that jared has come to terms with the reality of the situation  (  melanie is GONE.  she won’t be coming back.  not as herself ,  anyway ,  and he’s not sure he could handle seeing her with rings of silver in her eyes ,  so maybe it’s for the best.  )  doesn’t mean that the kid sleeping on a cot by his side has.  jamie lost his sister and he’s grieving ,  but goddamn it so is jared!  he loves the kid and he’s jared’s only family now ,  but he never thought he’d have to raise a grieving teenager in the middle of a fucking apocalypse ,  so yes ,  he feels bad for himself.  jared howe pities himself.

      ❛   don’t really have any other form of luxury available to me nowadays ,  do i?   ❜    his tone is bitter ,  laced with ice and venom.  he shouldn’t take it out on katniss ,  but she’s the only one there he can throw his hurt at ,  and jared has never been known to have bad aim.

               he doesn’t think she took it to heart ,  because from what he’s seen of her so far ,  she’s strong.   still ,  he can’t help but feel a tinge of guilt whenever he sees her move around in the corner of his eye.  a glance is thrown in her direction ,  dark eyes softening.    ❛   i’m afraid if i don’t allow myself the luxury of self-pity ,  i’ll just turn to hate.  i can’t let that happen when jamie’s around.    ❜    he’s staring into the flames now.    ❛   his sister wouldn’t want him to live his life hating everyone and everything ,  and i know that’s what i’ll do the moment i let this sadness go.  so i have to cling to it ,  until i get jamie somewhere safe.   ❜
