How it starts…. I draw the outlines of the shapes in crayon on the canvas. Then I choose 4 or 5 oils to work with. This is the first draft. I hang it so I can see it from afar. I don’t stare at it. I just get a feel for what is roughly right about it. Now for stage two. Adjustments to shape. Rehang. Relook. And then more colour consideration in stage 3. This pair of paintings are now parcelled up and ready to go to their new home. I absolutely love that they are a painting of two halves. I love the curves. I love the bold palette. They don’t have to hang together. They would look fabulous either side of a fireplace or hung totally separately. They can also be turned so that the natural relationship between the two is obscured. I’m definitely going to keep working on these. I am learning so much each time. I keep wanting to try a totally different colour palette, dark maroons and browns but I keep getting tempted back to a similar palette each time.
