Beach episode Fire Nation style! I was actually hoping we’d learn more about Mai and Ty Lee and hopefully this is our chance.

They’re going on an island where they used to go every summer as kids. Oh boi. There are going to be flashbacks and it’s going to hurt, uh?

The island is cute... but they’re staying with the two old ladies. Who say the beach has some kind of magical power that can help you understand yourself and each other... and get in swimsuits.

Meanwhile the gang is also relaxing in a lake. But Aang gets seen by Fire Nation soldiers who send a message to the Fire Lord. *facepalm* You had one job.

Meanwhile the Fire Nation gang is the most dysfunctional bunch of people ever and it’s the funniest thing.

They get invited to a party by some dudes who don’t recognize them... Azula says she is intrigued by the idea of seeing how people’d treat them when they don’t know who they are. Ember Island reveals the true you...

Zuko’s assassin intercepts and destroys the message about the Avatar being alive. Helpful, thanks I suppose...? I mean, putting the assassin-out-to-assassine-Aang part aside.

I love how Azula is unable to say something funny.

“For some reason when I meet boys they act as if I’m going to do something horrible to them” no one in this family has a grain of self-awareness lmao

I don’t know if Mai and Zuko are the absolute worst or absolute best couple. Both at the time time I suppose. When it was first shown they were a thing I thought it was some kind of fake dating to spy on each other or something but apparently they’re just two human disasters and they click together.

Whee the angsty part begins. Zuko goes to their old beach house and remembers the past...

Meanwhile the assassin arrives and his forehead tattoo apparently sends explodey rays. Yikes. Did you blow up Alderaan or something...?

Awwww the beach does indeed work as a therapy session. Everyone yells at each other and blurts out their traumas! Yay! Our favorite disaster muffin finally admits/realizes he’s angry at himself. Because he’s confused and it feels like he can’t tell the difference between right and wrong... you are so close to the point sweetheart you just need a few more steps.

Aww they get back together. Now that they’ve actually talked it can be a healthy relationship! Good, good.

Ooh even Azula gets affected by the feeling-y environment. It weighed on her that her mother thought she was a monster... “she was right of course but it still hurt”. Girl be a normal person for once please

This is cute. Like they’re murderous disasters but they’re cute. I also like the parallel between Aang burning his glider and Zuko burning the family portrait. Always need some good ol’ pars destruens in narratives.

Excellent episode, insight on Mai and Ty Lee was very due, Zuko getting a grain of awareness over his own feelings was very needed, and Azula is intriguing as more than just murdery machine. As I think I’ve already mentioned in another post, it’s interesting how they haven’t been just writing her as “well she’s evil and does evil things” but in a way that makes her really seem like she cognitively lacks a capability for empathy. She seems unable to muster certain basic social skills, understand how humor works etc. I’m intrigued to see the writers’ choices for her because she seems to be written as an autistic kid on whom her father installed a specific script; she was rewarded for sticking to that script and the rest is history. It would run in the family after all.

(We’re going with ‘Zuko and Azula have AtlA-universe special autism that works differently from our-universe autism and just skips several generations as a time or jumps around family trees randomly’ because this-universe autism is generally inherited by the father and we don’t want to be like ‘the genocidal Fire Lords are autistic uwu’ okay.)
