The standard legend of India’s Green Revolution centers on two propositions. First, India faced a food crisis, with farms mired in tradition and unable to feed an exploding population; and second, Borlaug’s wheat seeds led to record harvests from 1968 on, replacing import dependence with food self-sufficiency.
Recent research shows that both claims are false.
India was importing wheat in the 1960s because of policy decisions, not overpopulation. After the nation achieved independence in 1947, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru prioritized developing heavy industry. U.S. advisers encouraged this strategy and offered to provide India with surplus grain, which India accepted as cheap food for urban workers.
Meanwhile, the government urged Indian farmers to grow nonfood export crops to earn foreign currency. They switched millions of acres from rice to jute production, and by the mid-1960s India was exporting agricultural products.
Borlaug’s miracle seeds were not inherently more productive than many Indian wheat varieties. Rather, they just responded more effectively to high doses of chemical fertilizer. But while India had abundant manure from its cows, it produced almost no chemical fertilizer. It had to start spending heavily to import and subsidize fertilizer.
India did see a wheat boom after 1967, but there is evidence that this expensive new input-intensive approach was not the main cause. Rather, the Indian government established a new policy of paying higher prices for wheat. Unsurprisingly, Indian farmers planted more wheat and less of other crops.
Once India’s 1965-67 drought ended and the Green Revolution began, wheat production sped up, while production trends in other crops like rice, maize and pulses slowed down. Net food grain production, which was much more crucial than wheat production alone, actually resumed at the same growth rate as before.
But grain production became more erratic, forcing India to resume importing food by the mid-1970s. India also became dramatically more dependent on chemical fertilizer.
According to data from Indian economic and agricultural organizations, on the eve of the Green Revolution in 1965, Indian farmers needed 17 pounds (8 kilograms) of fertilizer to grow an average ton of food. By 1980, it took 96 pounds (44 kilograms). So, India replaced imports of wheat, which were virtually free food aid, with imports of fossil fuel-based fertilizer, paid for with precious international currency.
Today, India remains the world’s second-highest fertilizer importer, spending US$17.3 billion in 2022. Perversely, Green Revolution boosters call this extreme and expensive dependence “self-sufficiency.”

HOW NEHRU CAN TRULY BE CALLED 'THE ARCHITECT OF INDIA'S BIMARU ECONOMIC STRUCTURE'. ................................................................................. - HOW NEHRU INCOMPETENTLY, & PER MANY HISTORIANS, MALICIOUSLY, RUINED EASTERN INDIAN ECONOMIES, LIKE BENGAL, BIHAR, JHARKHAND, MADHYA PRADESH, CHHATTISGARH, & ORISSA, BY HIS ONE SIDED (SUBSIDIZED/EQUALIZED FREIGHT COST OF RAW MATERIAL ONLY & NOT FOR FINISHED GOODS) FREIGHT EQUALIZATION POLICY. - HOW NEHRU IN THE GARB OF A SOCIALIST INDIA, MANAGED TO CREATED A REGRESSIVELY CAPITALISTIC INDIA INSTEAD.
Here are India's 60 yr Share of Wealth stats, from 1961-2020, taken from the 'World Inequality Database'.
Looking at which, most would be forced to ask, why is it that in a wholly socialized state like India (& heavily publicized so at that for 60 yrs)....that our Top 1% 's share in wealth goes up 3 times, Top 10%'s share goes up 1.5 times, BUT SHARE OF THE BOTTOM 50% IS LITERALLY HALVED?
The answer to this lies largely in one man, Nehru, & his policies, either incompetently unintentional or maliciously intentional, policies directly responsible for creating a deeply disparate & heavily lopsided yet overall non-flourishing economic structure, for the entire first half century of the 'Dominion (of Britain) India'.
And the biggest mishap-causing misadventure, being 1951's infamous FREIGHT EQUALIZATION POLICY.
👇
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freight_equalisation_policy#:~:text=Freight%20equalisation%20policy%20was%20adopted,subsidised%20by%20the%20central%20government.
Above is the Russian Govt+military reaction, to Indian 'independence' in mid 1947. This article was published in the Russian central military newspaper 'Red Star' on July 31, 1947, just 2 weeks before the official date of India's so-called Independence.
"Chief economic positions still remain in British hands–railways, marine transport, port economy, irrigation systems, finance, basic part of jute, industry, almost whole mining industry etc"
“The defence of economic positions and interests is not possible without political power. That power will be secured in the person of the capitalists, landowners and businessmen who are dependent upon British capital.”
“The partition, does not affect the feudal power of the Princes who have always supported British domination.”
"The British Govt plans to artificially separate industrial from agricultural areas, turning it to a agrarian & raw material appendage of Britain."
Exactly what Nehru's Freight Equalization Policy achieved 4 yrs later!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And to add to what y'all I assume would already have read from above, as to it's evil designs & effects, it created a reverse-reward scenario, whereby all the resource-rich states were essentially penalized for their natural advantages, by taking away all incentive for processing-industries & final transportation industries, that are a logical next step from the extraction industries, to germinate & set base in these places. Thereby creating a scenario where the South-western & western coastal states like Maharashtra, Gujarat & Tamil Nadu, & parts of Punjab in North India, were able to find logical easy base for all the processing & transportation industries in their states, for industries like steel, cement, heavy manufacturing, & power, all enabled via raw materials from the other far-off states, like iron ore, coal, limestone, bauxite, copper etc, even w/o any personal natural resources to rely on themselves, merely by virtue of being easy locations to set up ports in for exports, & w/o industries having to compromise on higher transportation & value-added processing costs, that cost aspect equalized & protected for all distances from the resource point. All this, with resource states not finding even some respite in terms of return benefits from any possibly subsidized finished product costs, finished goods not covered by this policy!
These 4-5 states effectively thus became the parasites, for atleast 7 of the traditionally god-gifted states of today like Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Bengal & Uttar Pradesh, killing all their hope at industrial development & economic progress, & where there is economic (or lotsa times attached) spiritual hopelessness, springs leftism in all it's devious forms, giving birth to intense communism & it's shameful offsprings of caste-divide & gang-culture, literally turning these states HOUSING HALF OF INDIA'S POPULATION, into the pot-holes of the Indian Union -the BIMARU (for Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh) states of India.
Now in all of this, it's not as if the above-mentioned coastal states were turning themselves into heavens of prosperity either, merely relatively well-off & with a hopeful disposition of the future, that in itself enough to attract large-scale migration from the above BIMARU states, particularly Maharashtra with a more traditionally Hindi-friendly ambience, but also in TN, creating a new urban housing problem, giving birth anew to Mumbai's infamously gargantuan chawl (dingy hutment) lifestyle.
And the reasons for these states, given all these special privileges, not able to take off well enough, aren't directly visible, yet that we can now, on basis of our analysis of Nehru & his so-called Independent India, over innumerable blogs prior, safely interpret, to be an India yet functioning in 1950s & till mid-1960s as some sort of a vassal state of Britain. Only natural then for a supreme state in such a relationship, to not be assumed to desire nations other than itself any sorta economic or strategic base in it's territory, thus curtailing more robust foreign economic to-and-fro.
A utterly class-subservient bent, not seen just for the British race, but per historians, eg Kanchan Gupta, in his hateful sense of complex & hatred of dark-skinned & skinny Bengali community, even worse passionate Hindu Durga-lovers, & per many, all largely borne of his hatred for Bose.
And thus ends yet another inglorious chapter from the life of the self-confessed Last British Ruler of India.
The Tale of the Internal Destruction of India, & it's Premier at it.

How does Agriculture Marketing work in India?
India is primarily an agricultural nation, and its agricultural industry is the primary source of income for one-third of the country's population. Since the beginning of recorded history, agriculture has been and continues to be the most important sector of India's economy. Approximately twenty-five per cent of India's overall gross domestic product (GDP) comes from the country's agricultural sector. As a result of the fact that the provision of food is humanity's primary necessity, there has been a significant focus on the commercialization of agricultural output. Because of this, ensuring the adequate production and equitable distribution of food has recently emerged as one of the most pressing worldwide concerns.
Agriculture companies in India are involved in Agricultural marketing, that consists mostly of transactions involving purchasing and selling various agricultural goods. During earlier times, when the economy of the village was more or less capable of supporting itself, there were no challenges associated with the marketing of agricultural products because farmers sold their output directly to consumers in exchange for cash or barter.
Trade or transfer of goods or services from one person to another is necessary for today's agricultural marketing, as well as it is an integral part of the Krishi bazaar. Assembling, preparing for consumption, and distribution are all marketing functions in this case. The sale of any agricultural product is contingent on a number of variables, including the current level of demand for the product, the availability of storage, and so on. The products can either be sold on the open market or kept in storage until they are needed. Furthermore, it can be sold in its natural state, straight from the field, or after the farmer or local merchant has cleaned, graded, and processed it. In certain cases, consumers demand processing, while in others, the product's quality is at risk. As a distribution system, the goal is to match existing supply with existing demand by selling and reselling at various points in different marketplaces, such as primary and secondary markets or terminal and final markets.
For the most part, farmers in India's private sector sell their agricultural products to moneylenders or village traders. There are numerous ways to market and sell a product. For example, it could be sold in a weekly market in the farmer's community or a neighbouring village. If none of these options is available, produce may be sold in the Krishi market or at sporadic marketplaces in adjacent towns or villages.
There are a number of organisations in India's central government that are involved in the marketing of agricultural products. Some examples of these organisations include the Food Corporation of India, the Cotton Corporation of India, the Commission of Agricultural Costs and Prices, as well as Jute Corporation of India, among others. Marketing organisations that specialise in rubber, tea, coffee, tobacco, spices, and vegetables are likewise considered to be specialised.
More than forty primary commodities are graded obligatorily for export in accordance with the grading and marketing Agricultural Produce Act of 1937, whereas the grading of primary commodities for consumption within the country is done voluntarily. Even though the state government is responsible for regulating commodity markets, the directorate of inspection and marketing offers marketing and inspection services all the way down to the village level, in addition to providing financial assistance to assist in the establishment of commodity grading centres in certain markets.
Given that we have a history of engaging in agricultural production, marketing, and other commercial operations related to agriculture, the time has come for us to engage in some creative thinking and come up with fresh concepts for value-added services. The current agricultural engine will receive a new dimension due to the value-added services provided. The next obvious step may be food processing, which is another industry that could generate cash and provide a lot of full-time employment opportunities for our younger population. Because of the shifting agricultural landscape and rising levels of global competitiveness, it is essential to make the most of the resources currently available.
Five hundred regulated markets were studied between 1970-71 and 1971-72 by the Ministry of Agriculture's Directorate (Inspection and marketing) in an effort to determine the current markets' suitability and efficiency, as well as to identify and suggest ways to improve them. Unfortunately, several of the market committees have had insufficient financial resources, which has been a serious downside. The Ministry of Agriculture decided that grants of up to two lakhs rupees would be made available under a central sector scheme drafted during the fourth plan. There will be a shortfall, and it will have to come from commercial banks.
The fact that the International Development Agency (IDA) is taking such a strong interest in the development of the infrastructure in regulated markets is yet another significant change that has taken place in these markets. The Infrastructure Construction Agency (IDA) is providing funding for the development of infrastructure in fifty of Bihar's markets.
Irrigation, rural infrastructure, the restoration of water bodies, and water harvesting all have some positive developments to report, which is another source of optimism. The nomination of a banker to the position of chief executive of the Small Farmers Agri-business Consortium (SFAC) is another step that has been taken to enhance the governance of the organisation. Additionally, the SFAC must be given additional funding.

How can we get Gold from the Golden Fibre?
Tumblr media
Due to its natural colour and importance jute has become known as the ‘golden fibre’ . The fabric has little impact on the environment and is proven to be very durable and the plants are easy to grow, produce a large crop and do not require various pesticides and fertilizers. The fiber is a relation of the flax and hemp plants and is extracted by a very similar method. Jute has a vast array of uses ranging from carpet backing to re-usable bags. Jute is mainly grown in India in the fertile Ganges Delta where it produces a high yield annual crop.
India is the largest producer and consumer of jute products in the world. The figure is around 1.97 million MT for India, followed by 1.24 million MT for Bangladesh, our neighbor and second largest producer, but world’s largest exporter. Yet, interest in this fiber is withering away in India due to less interest of people. We need to revive the same. The jute products include rugs, carpets, footwear, wine bottle bags, carry bags, hand bags, wall hangings, jewellery, baskets, coasters, lamp shades, decorative articles and show pieces. Slowly jute is losing market despite the fact that it is reusable, eco-friendly and bio degradable. 92% Jute is used for packaging which is under regulation which says all of food grain has to be packaged in jute bags only. Only balance 8% used for other purposes. However, demand for jute is on a downward trend because of cost competitiveness of mass production from synthetic fibres. Moreover, there are fluctuations in Government Demand for packaging, according to media reports. But, Government of India is keen to develop the sector and has hiked the MSP. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in March 2024 approved ₹285/quintal hike in the minimum support price (MSP) for raw jute to ₹5,335/quintal for the 2024-25 season as against ₹5,050/quintal for the 2023-24. The Government of West Bengal is providing Crop Insurance too, which gives a lot of security to the sector.
To improve the Jute Market, we may take Bangladesh as a reference point here, since they give 3-4 types of subsidy, including 9-10% subsidy for food packing bags. Perhaps, subsidy may be needed to revive Jute demand, in matter other than packaging. And once the desired scale is achieved the subsidy can be withdrawn. But, to work out the needed subsidy, we require detailed research. Last, but not the least, we also need to ensure only ‘Made in India’ Jute is being sold in India. We welcome your thoughts for helping the Industry to grow. Do write to us.

Why Do People Love Hand Tufted Rugs More Than Anything Else?
Recently, hand tufted rugs have gained more popularity among consumers compared to traditional hand-woven rugs. Hand tufted rugs from Hand Tufted rugs Exporters India are of higher quality compared to rugs made from the machine. These rugs are made from top-quality materials and are available in different colors and patterns. Keep reading this blog to know the reasons to buy this rug over others!
How is a hand-tufted rug made?
The process involved in making hand-tufted rugs is entirely different from hand-woven rugs. This kind of rug is made using a tufting gun.
