Shhh... secret draft designs. Don't tell Twitter yet. Please give me any feedback, and feel free to read my many design thoughts under the cut. Also feel free to use the designs yourself.
Alright! The things right at the top that i wanted to keep in mind were things in the series that are distinct to mechanites vs things warforged have.
As far as I remember, there are only two notable ones. Mechanites have jaws that cannot move, instead they have face plates that can open up. And while the other isn't stated in canon, warforged have crystals in their eyes, and mechanites are never pictured or described in that way.
I almost broke the first rule on purpose with DX-TR, seeing as he's described as human-like and the negotiator, but as I was going through the series again, he was explicitly stated to have the same stiff jaw.
The only heights (I think) we have were that VR-LA got the haha funny meme number at 6'9", MR-SN was a few inches taller, and C-RA is at least as tall as Finbar (7'2"). From there, I wanted DX-TR to be nearly as tall as VR-LA, so he's around 6'6"/6'7". E-DN is about the same height as him because I feel like with her satyr legs, her being taller made sense. I put K-LB around 6'2" because I was originally going to have a slight joke that this height was after he'd already made mods to himself with heels and his mohawk. I didn't like how the heels came out, so I left it out. AS-TR is the shortest at the bare minimum height for warforged at 5'10". I'll get into that in the section discussing her design.
While it didn't really come up in these designs, since VR-LA has been pictured with yellow eyes, and described with blue, I've headcanoned that mechanites eyes change color based on how much processing they're doing. So the default would be blue, when they're calm and just hanging out. Their eyes switch to yellow when they're concentrating or focused on something specific. Orange is when they're flustered or upset. Red is the dramatic color for when they're really angy. I'd imagine someone like DX-TR can deliberately control it to avoid giving away some tell, but I don't think it's common for mechanites to do it.
The designs are mostly based on the same shapes and pieces that VR-LA has, rather than Vice/He-11, as those feel like they're kind of unusual in that regard. And even if they're not, I'd still chalk it up as a difference in their plane of origin. Onto individual character notes!
C-RA was described as being large, having a sort of knights templar, aesthetic, somewhat like living armor but more organic. Mostly what I referenced was plate armor, so pretty straight-forward. That being said, I feel like her design's a little plain. I wanted to add something to her head to help distinguish her head silhouette more. Plus I feel like her colors are too desaturated, and she just doesn't really have a shape that carries throughout her design. Idk, it's fine, but it just doesn't feel striking.
MR-SN was described as being slender, regal, and with a permanent smile in his eyes. I feel like I had a similar issue with him that I had with C-RA where there doesn't seem to be anything that carries through his design. I feel like I captured the face pretty well at least where he looks kind and kind of like a dad who's just proud of you. He's one I kind of feel like with clothes, his design might work better. I had no clue what color to go for, so it's just a color that I thought would be unique enough to the group.
VR-LA is just based on his season 1 art. The only thing I changed from how I drew him before, was mostly just proportions, like around the joints. I wanted him to be a thin, scrawny nerd, so he's also more narrow than before. My goal was half of C-RA's size, and I think C-RA's about 1 1/2 VR-LA's, so it's close enough.
DX-TR was described as human-like and bald with a flesh tone color. He was honestly really easy. As a joke, I referenced Seth Everman for his face sculpt, and I think it came out well. Mostly I referenced human muscles for his sculpt. I considered giving him tattoos, but didn't really have any ideas for that. He's got two notably unique traits from the rest of the group. He's the only one without shoulder pauldrons, which I kinda want to change, but idk there, and the light in his eyes is round rather than the cross design I treated as baseline. I wanted a less human saturation in skin, and I don't think I achieved that, but I'm not sure it'd look as good. I kinda want him more uncanny valley, but idk what to do there.
E-DN was described as a similar mechanite design as VR-LA, but with satyr legs. I gave her horns and horizontal pupils, mostly just for variety. I gave her a little more of just a round shape compared to VR-LA's more angular shapes. Her design I like over all. I like the colors, and I think the mint accents help her stand out. She's got good shapes and a good silhouette. And everything feels like it came out pretty well with her.
K-LB I'm torn on. I almost feel like he stands out too much. As far as what's described, I had the hardest time figuring out his design. He's described as a standard mechanite that's gold with fine gold filigree that looks like wire mesh, as well as a blue glow from his arms. I was going for somewhere around a punk-ish Rodney Copperbottom from Robots kind of idea. The filigree mesh I just used a nonsense text brush because i didn't have any specific ideas there. I like how the yellows/blues look together. I like the hexagon shape that carries throughout. His silhouette's mostly different enough from everyone else. I don't think he's too saturated. Yet I just don't feel like his design fits him, and I don't know what to do. He's the one I feel like scrapping and redoing the most.
AS-TR was described with long hair, and a slight glow, but didn't have much of a description as far as I remember otherwise. She had two notable design inspirations. Selûne and my cat who coincidentally has the same name (mostly my cat lol). One of Selûne's avatar's is described as long limbed (which is kind of how I just drew the mechanites), with pale hair, dusty skin, and green eyes. The pattern around her eyes is a less exaggerated version of some of her iconography. Her eyes are tinted green with her holy symbol as the shape of the lights. If I were smart, I'd actually have put all seven of the stars that are a part of Selûne's holy symbol (and I might change that later). Aster (my cat) is a tiny little black cat with a grey undercoat and two tiny lil white spots. So from there, I made AS-TR the smallest mechanite, she's two different shades of grey, and she has two little white spots on her chest in a similar size, shape, and location as Aster's. As a result of the name coincidence, and from what we've seen, similar personality, AS-TR is required to be my favorite, lol. Even excluding that though, I do like how her design came out too. Like I said, I might change the design slightly to have the seven stars across her, and I might change the greys to have more contrast because they're too similar, but the whole design came close to what I had in mind.
Over all, I'm pretty satisfied with all of these designs, and while there's things I'm going to change, I think these are all pretty solid.

A staple nameplate just for Buick, the Regal was obviously a fairly nice personal luxurious car on its 1973 debut, but got instead bland in the '80s, as being a commuter that wasn't actually anything too special. However riding on the G-Body through 1981 onwards, the Royal and its Gary the gadget guy brothers like the Pontiac Great Prix tend to be seen as some of the last correct old-school muscle cars using their simple RWD layout, departing at least some charm remaining.
First showing up in 1982 for the second year of the G-Body royal, the Grand National nameplate was used to celebrate the Regal's back to back '81 plus '82 manufacturer's title is victorious for Buick in NASCAR's Winston Mug Grand National Series (renamed to just "Winston Cup" in '86). The particular GNX though was exactly where it got expensive, priced at $29, 290 in 1987, which is around $68, 294 today. Chrysler’s K-cars cost $700M to develop - a huge sum at a time when the automaker was struggling. In 1974 then-Chrysler boss Lynn Townsend had rejected building an American Simca 1307, a car that might have given Chrysler a 4-year head start on GM’s X-cars. Townsend’s successor John Riccardo wisely took advantage of the Simca Horizon, built in the U.S. as the very popular L-body Omni/Horizon. Still, there was resistance to the K-cars’ cost, and some in management wanted to go with a simpler rwd car - ailing Chrysler only had money for one, and it picked a winner. - Many lessons were learned from the L-body but the K’s were a clean-sheet design; and one that eventually went FAR beyond the original design brief of 2/4-dr sedans and a wagon. The cars had to have much better NVH levels than the L-body and be roomy and solid enough to retain Aspen/Volare customers; and so they did. The original #Kcars were slow and understeery but economical; and inside didn’t feel too much smaller than the Aspen. Due to financial limitations, loan guarantees were happening at the time, the original Dodge Aries/Plymouth Reliant used only Chrysler’s new 2.2L (designed for both the L and K) or Mitsubishi’s 2.6L fours mated to 4-speeders or an auto. - The cars were a success; though sales started slowly and 1981-82 were still very rough years. The K-cars saved Chrysler, but so did cutting 70,000 jobs and huge cost cuts. which meant using the K and the 2.2 for *everything.* In 1982, Chrysler got it’s own K (the first of many), the LeBaron - differing from the Aries/Reliant in front and rear styling and interior appointments. The most distinct LeBaron (until 1983’s convertible) came mid-year - the Town & Country Wagon. Like every T&C since 1941, it wore distinctive (fake) woodgrain. - The variants did not stop at the T&C - the K went on to underpin most of Chrysler’s domestic lineup in the 1980s in ways not imagined by the original designers (Minivan, Daytona/Laser, GTS/Lancer, etc.), and the 2.2L four had a similarly wide array of incarnations. 1984 saw the intro of the famous Turbo. C-RA's saturation was cranked up, as well as light orange and purple accents to give her extra colors. I changed her pauldrons and leg guards to match, and changed the shapes on the elbows, chest, and knees. Weapons and shield styled after the shape used on the map.
MR-SN's colors were shifted from more yellow to blue, and was given more saturated accents in a dark and light blue. While we don't have much gear for him, cape was added for dramatic swooshes during storytelling.
VR-LA's design I don't think I changed any? I just added his staff and clothes from his Season 1 design. Technically he also has his spell book attached like a messenger bag, but I just left it off for this.
DX-TR had some armor integrated on him. Pauldrons were styled to match the shape Austin used on the map.
E-DN's colors might have changed slightly? I forget if I did. Wasn't sure what the shapes were in her map icon. I think they're swords, but I just left it, and mirrored the shapes in her bag.

K-LB's design I changed less than I thought I would. I changed the blue I used, and changed his chest thing into a gear shape.
AS-TR I added more armor on, and slightly changed some shapes so she'd have the seven compasses/stars that are a part of Selûne's iconography (attached to pauldrons, hands, chest, and eyes).
Really happy with the changes, and I like how they all came out! I think they all stand out from each other without being too far from the designs we have for mechanites. I think last time I talked a lot about shapes and silhouettes, as well as the colors, and I think they look pretty solid now. It might be a bit until I do a full group drawing, but I've got a few ideas for some smaller ones until then.

Ok I'm doing it. Part one of the Rolling with Difficulty telltale game concept.
SPOILERS FOR ROLLING WITH DIFFICULTY
Note this assumes some time has passed after the season three finale so AS-TR is at least mostly recovered and the new and old crews have a bit of a report with each other.
So the game opens and you hear a more cinematic version of the opening accompanied with visuals of the Astral Sea along with the Old and New crews of the Per Aspera. Then we cut to the engine room with Dani working on fine tuning a couple different things before K-LB walks in.
Dani: "Gah! Geez man you can't scare me like that!"
K-LB: "Sorry? I just wanted to check how everything was going and if you wanted me to lend a hand"
Dani: "Weren't you helping VR-LA patch up the helm?"
K-LB: "Well yeah but we just finished that up a bit ago"
Dani: "Alright. Fine. The motoforce generator needs a quick tune up but before you do that could you pass me the wrench from over there?"
K-LB: "Which one? There's like 10 here."
Dani: "The one with the scorch marks on it"
K-LB: "What do you mean they all have scorch marks"
The voice of VR-LA then speaks up over the sending stones.
VR-LA: "We've got company!!"
Dani and K-LB quickly run out of the engine room with Dani accidentally hitting a pipe on the way out.
Dani: "Agh! Stupid new height."
They make it out of the room where everyone else is as they do a sort of run and talk thing
Dani: Kyana? Finbar? What the hell is going on?
Kyana: No clue but it doesn't sound good
They get above deck of the now stationary ship as VR-LA is in a staring match with a hooded figure as multiple others are floating above
The player is now given an option
Kyana, Finbar, VR-LA or Dani?
This then triggers a fight sequence with a few quick time events in the perspective of this character fighting alongside a member of the old crew versus one of these cloaked figures. Finbar with AS-TR, Kyana with C-RA, VR-LA with E-DN and Dani with K-LB. (I picked those pairs based on what I thought would bring about the most interesting dynamics when separated from the rest of the group as you'll see soon)
Not too long after that one figure comes out wearing robes that shinmer in a beautiful blue in comparison to the others red. They then holds their hands out towards the group in each of their pairs and plane shifts them. Except the character whose perspective you chose and their Mechanite partner. (I imagine if VR-LA is chosen as the perspective character in this scenario it would bring some great angst out of him as he lose his friends, again) They have to stay and fight them off the ship. This doesn't take too long thankfully as the figures already accomplished what they wanted and will flee. But after that and an easy agreement is reached between the pair they set out on a journey to get their friends back. First stop... Well that depends on the character but I don't know.
Please give me suggestions on what to do next because I will make more parts to this and I kinda just winged it here and want more of like a proper idea for the scenes I write going forward.

Subclasses for the old crew of the Per Aspera.
SPOILERS FOR ROLLING WITH DIFFICULTY SEASON 3
So we already know VR-LA's so I'll just skip that.
AS-TR: This one i am most solid on considering Twilight Cleric fits her and Selune so well. Just the vibe is immaculate.
E-DN: I feel like Horizon Walker Ranger makes the most sense seeing as she would be a great navigator on the Astral Sea by being able to tell where the closest portals are and being able to take out extraplanar threats
K-LB: So Dani is already an Artillerist so I don't think Austin would also make K-LB one while that wouldbe extremely cool. So eliminating that I think Armorer could work. I see it flavored as him adding upgrades to give himself better combat capabilities.
C-RA: Honestly she could go anywhere. Battle Master could make sense but honestly Eldritch Knight sounds really badass. C-RA casting spells while cutting down enemies just seems so cool to me.
MR-SN: He's the one I'm least sure about. The only thing we ever see him do is cast "Command" or "Suggestion" (It seemed so much like Command but Wizards don't get it while they do get Suggestion) using the word "Witness" to kill that Githyanki. I put my bet on Enchantment Wizard but it could be so many things.
Anyone else have any other ideas? I'd love to hear them.

SPOILER WARNING FOR RWD UP UNTIL THE SEASON 3 FINALE
Ok, Rolling with Difficulty on the brain and I gotta sleep tonight so I need to get this out somehow.
Here's some RWD hopes for the future
VR-LA eventually comes to bond with all of the old crew members again and on the anniversary of the attack they go out onto the Astral Sea and drop flowers into the astral sea in memory of MR_SN. They all regain the bond they once had as crew and maybe they go back and repair the Ad Astra so the old crew have a spelljammer to call their own and more importantly have a home again. I hope that he can have two found families now even if his boyfriend is dead
Finbar once settling down with Elise will absolutely be opening up a tavern/inn of his at some point in Sigil or take over management of the Sprite Spring once Peaceblossom retires. He's gonna return at some point after he leaves the party I just know it! Like someone is gonna want to go see him, right?
Kyana, after season 3, I hope goes to train with Enok some more. Maybe gets to know the monks from the Cenobium more and finds a common place between them. Maybe she speaks to Ione again and they can hopefully reconcile at least a little bit. Maybe Enok can help Kyana unlock the full Astral Body which should be the next Subclass Feature she gets. I want to see more of Kyana delving into her past to carve out her own future because I really think that'd be dope and super in line with her character progression up until this point. One last thing, I really want to see how that connection Kyana and E-DN sort of started in the finale blossoms if at all because it seems really interesting
Sadly I only have so much for Dani but I do have a few. I WANT HER TO USE THE HELL RIDE AGAIN!! That race scene was so cool and I absolutely adored how into it Dani was. I also want more time with some of the less utilized Heap crew members like Sadie because some of these characters are amazing and need more love! I also want to see Dani bond with K-LB so badly! I need the two Artificers can get along. Who knows maybe Dani can teach K-LB a bit of chaos.

the rwd season 4 qna inspired me to start thinking about college au headcanons except a lot of these are gonna be really specific to my school and y'all are just gonna have to deal with that <3
Kyana feeds some of the school cats. she would feed all of them if she could
Dani smuggled Plug (the scrawniest black cat you've ever seen) into her dorm room illegally and somehow management hasn't caught her yet (based on a true story) (Kyana visits to see Plug all the time)
Finbar keeps an updated tier list of every canteen in the school with breakdowns of the best stalls/dishes for each
A senior from the school of engineering once said to me 'all the engineering people dress like rats cuz our classrooms don't have aircon' (context: tropics) anyway that's Dani
Kyana would probably be involved in a lot of freshman orientation events from second year onwards. she just likes talking to the new kids and giving them advice like she would be the kind of orientation group leader who'd get messages from her freshies asking about all kinds of random nonsense because she's made sure they know they can always contact her with questions
VR-LA is The Guy you go to for textbook pirating resources
(this is more of a 'wouldn't that be funny' but VR-LA is just Veerle's discord handle)
Docent is the name of VR-LA's old laptop that broke down so he gave it to Cassimere (computer engineering major he met once at a networking event) to fix except Cassimere got everything off the hard drive and then somehow managed to fuck it up Even More so he had to get a new laptop (and named it Emi)
Roy has gotten food poisoning from his dorm meal plan at least once (based on at least one true story)
The heap trio + Mandy would be those friends constantly playing majong in the dorm lounge and if all the majong tables are taken they just play in one of their dorm rooms on a towel to dampen the tile shuffling noises (it was Mandy's idea)
Every morning Dani goes to the drinks stall at her faculty and orders one iced coffee to the point where the stall owner starts preparing an iced coffee whenever they see her approach (based on my true story)
Roy would be one of those people who goes clubbing every other week and every time he tries to drag the rest of the heap trio and Egan almost always goes and Dani would go if she didn't have a good excuse but always begrudgingly. anyway Roy would always be the only one having a good time until Egan gets drunk enough to start having fun
Finbar actually uses the dorm kitchens instead of just buying canteen food and it always makes the hallways smell really good
Vhas also uses the dorm kitchen sometimes but like. one time i walked into the pantry on my floor and someone had left cut sweet potatoes and 2 eggs in an inch of water in a pan on the stove. that's Vhas
Kyana's constantly applying for overseas exchanges and international summer/winter school programmes. the world is large and she wants to see it!
Maxim's the definition of a hall phantom. you know he lives on your dorm floor because you pass him by in the hallways sometimes and literally nowhere else. sometimes you're not convinced that he actually exists
VR-LA and Maxim's friendship stems from them being from wildly different faculties (VR-LA's in STEM, Maxim's doing anthropology so arts/social sciences) but also having lots of weird interests they cant really bug anyone in their home faculties about
Elyse is in student government and every once in a while Finbar receives a series of angry texts about the newest idiocy she's had to put up with
MR-SN and AS-TR start a stargazing club together. other notable members include AS-TR's girlfriend E-DN, MR-SN's friend C-RA (the one who always volunteers to carry the heavy ass telescopes) and MR-SN's friend K-LB who he pestered into coming to fix one of the wonky scopes even though K-LB's actually in electrical engineering but he's the only engineering person MR-SN (an arts student) knows
oh and of course VR-LA joins because he genuinely just likes space (developing a crush on his club chairperson was not on his bingo card)
Kyana and E-DN were MMA sparring buddies at one point which is how she found out about the stargazing and joined immediately
