Tumblr media
Robert D. Absher, 71, died of natural causes on Monday, March 23, 2020 at his home in Forty Fort. Born March 22, 1949 in Pontiac, MI, he is the son of the late James Lee and Olive (Thomas) Absher.
Bob was raised in Waterford, MI and became interested in broadcasting while attending Mott High School. He attended Western Michigan University where he began his broadcasting career at the college’s radio station WIDR as a disc jockey and news reporter. He was a member of its executive board and instrumental in making executive decisions in its operation. Bob was influenced and impacted greatly in his pursuit into radio and television by Dr. Rossman, his Broadcasting Department professor and Dr. Kuykendall, his mentor and college radio station advisor.
Upon graduation in 1971, he was employed at WKNR (Detroit) as a news reporter and announcer. In the mid 1970’s, he worked for KSLQ Radio in St. Louis, as a radio news reporter/announcer and director.  In 1977, he began his long television career at WNEP-TV in Scranton, PA. He started as an investigative news reporter and weekend anchor and later became the assignment editor.  He retired as the Director of News Operations in 2005.  He was respected for his integrity in presenting thorough, accurate, and fair news reporting and was an advisor and mentor to interns and young reporters.
In his spare time, he enjoyed going to the horse races and casinos. He was especially fond of harness racing and a regular at Mohegan/Pocono Downs and always dreamed of owning a race horse.
Bob is survived by daughter Colleen McGinty (William) of Germantown, WI; son Ryan Absher of Clarkston, MI; grandchildren Connor and Eliana McGinty, and sister Barbara Dunn.  He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Donald Lee Absher.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
