This is important as it may have given Steve Smith the idea to create Dalton's character and place him in the show. And because of the closeness to Port Carling and the surrounding area, it would be reasonably geographically accurate in regards to the show as well. It is also the stretch traveled by the cast and crew of the show to the many location shoots in the Muskokas. 11 on this stretch and this has all been apart of GTA culture since the 1940's. There are numerous antique stores along the side of Hwy. It is the route traveled by many cottagers, hikers and vacationers from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) up to Algonquin park, Northern Ontario and the Muskokas. First off, this stretch is a very old stretch of highway and very unique in Ontario (partly in that despite being partly a 4 lane divided freeway style with controlled access, many businesses and homes are directly along the route with direct highway access similar to a standard county road or secondary highway - which is where the location of the store used on the show appeared to be). This would make sense for several reasons. However it is unconfirmed that it was shot at a real antique shop on Ontario Hwy. The actual store used for the filming of these segments is unknown. The front lawn is littered with items in varying states of decay and resembles many rural Ontario antique shops. The store is made up of a small house with a garage type building used to store items. Red frequently would also open with "we're out here on the main highway at Dalton's Everything Store." This would put Dalton's store just outside of the town of Possum Lake, probably in between town and the lodge itself. These segments would start off with a shot of the property which was usually Dalton's buildings surrounded by junk with a rusty "antiques" sign out front. Dalton, being a very close friend of Red, would often have him come over to shoot various segments. He then suggests Parry Sound is close by to the lodge and area which places the lodge within the Port Carling area and further provides proof of Port Carling as the setting of Possum Lake.ĭalton's everything store became a major part of the show starting in the 4th season. As such this could be a play on Steve's humour in also calling the lodge "Chapter 11".Ĭharlie Farquharson in Episode 246 "You've got oil" from 2003 is mentioned to be from Parry Sound and at a lodge meeting suggests that he came to the lodge because he wanted to come see where the smell is coming from. Another belief rests with many fans who have messaged in to mention that "Chapter 11" in the United States also means bankruptcy. One belief is that the 11 is derived from Ontario Highway 11 which is the closest major Highway to Port Carling as Hwy 400 did not extend up near Parry Sound back in 1990 like it currently does today, making Hwy 11 the main express route in the area. This seems like an odd number for a lodge to be named after, as you would assume they would call themselves chapter 1 or were the eleventh chapter to join (There is no mention of other chapters outside of Season 3's Possum Olympics). The Possum Lake chapter is known as chapter 11. Lastly even the Possum Lodge Crest helps give us some answers. Lake Scugog of course is about 2 hours east of Port Carling, making it a reasonable fishing destination for Red and helping to further confirm the location of the real life Possum Lake area. What also helps to confirm this theory is that Red mentions in a Mailbag segment in Season 1's, Hot Water Bottle (Episode 15) that he had gone fishing on Lake Scugog the previous May for pickerel. Incidentally this marina has become known locally as Brackstons' Marina as the owner has enjoyed continuous association with the show. This would include Ranger Gord’s watchtower, some of the Adventures with Bill segments, scenes with Buzz Sherwood and his plane and Glen Brackstons' Marina. This would make sense as many segments of the show were shot on and around Lake Rosseau (Port Carling is surrounded by this lake). Further, this specifically points to the Town of Port Carling to be the real location of the Town of Possum Lake. With some research this would put the location between Barrie and Parry Sound. In realistic terms, this is understood as being situated in cottage country in the Muskoka’s, which is a popular vacation spot for many South Western Ontarians. Possum Lodge and the Possum Lake area is said (according to Red's Facebook page) to be approximately 148 beer stores north of Toronto. It is also situated in the area of Port Asbestos. Possum Lodge is situated on the most ideal spot of Possum Lake to construct a building (as said by red to Kevin Black in a season 5 segment of Ask the Experts) and just outside of the fictional town of Possum Lake.

Learning by the Lakes
Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog! In previous weeks I have discussed how nature has changed my life through art, privilege, and hobbies but I want to dive into how I learned to love nature like I do today. Learning in nature from a young age and so often despite living in the suburbs, had a strong impact on my relationship with exploring the outdoors.
Reflecting on all said experiences, one place has always been my outdoor classroom and my comfort space in nature: lakes. In Ontario Canada, we are blessed to have such an array of freshwater lakes, from the massive great lakes to lots of smaller lakes. The suburb I grew up in had two small lakes super close by, these were called Philips Lake and Bond Lake. When I got older playing outside was a huge part of my childhood and being around this area led me to grow up being drawn to the water.
An even more special lake to my family is Lake Nipissing. Every summer, the four of us head out on a long road trip to North Bay for a little vacation. We go up to a small cabin on the lake that has the necessities: running water, beds, electricity, and a really comfy couch to crash on after a long day in the sun. There's no television, no wifi, and barely any cell service in the woods, so it's a really good chance for all of us to disconnect from our busy lives and reconnect with nature. These trips are also where I got my start with fishing. From experience every year, I got better at setting my own hooks, properly casting, and handling fish on the line. I took risks and fought through the initial squeamish feeling of touching live bait. Of course, my dad helped me through it all by showing me the ropes but made sure to challenge me by coaching from afar. I can confidently say that from all my hands-on experience and learning, I'm a pretty good fisher! By going on these trips and learning how to handle the outdoors without relying on a “how-to” guide or technology to help my every move, I've learned to not be afraid of exploring the outdoors. Having a hands-on learning experience that taught me to push my limits, has allowed the lakes I grew up with and visited to become a comfort zone for me.
Tumblr media
Learning in this way shaped my capacity for a type of intelligence called bodily-kinesthetic, involving using your hands or the rest of your body to experience new things and solve problems (Beck et al., 2018, p.110). Our trips to Lake Nipissing allowed me to develop my own interpretation of what I was learning by being hands-on with my fishing tasks. Fishing and learning to love nature on the lake has eventually led me to develop another type of intelligence called Naturalistic intelligence (Beck et al., 2018, p.112). Through experience, I have gained the ability to interpret the natural world and apply it through activities such as observing species, going on walks, and identifying things I see in nature to share with others. These two intelligences help me understand the way I learn and interpret better, and I have all of my previous experience to thank. The lakes have been a fun and encouraging place of learning for me. Without a comfortable learning experience there, I can't imagine where else I would have shaped my skills with the outdoors and for life in general.

Acid rain: causes and effects
Acid rain occurs when acid-containing precipitation falls onto the earth’s surface. Precipitation comes in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail. Precipitation collects acidic particles and gases and becomes acidic. These particles will have a pH level below 5.6.
There are two types of deposition processes: wet and dry. Acid rain is wet deposition. Wet deposition causes erosion that affects ecosystems. Dry deposition occurs when small acid particles and gases fall onto the earth’s surface. Gases such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides change into acids when they contact water.
Acid deposition occurs when sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions transform into secondary pollutants. Examples of such pollutants are sulphuric acid, ammonium nitrate, and nitric acid. These pollutants then fall onto land, water, vegetation, or structures.
Acid deposition can damage:
lakes and rivers
forests
soils
fish and wildlife populations
buildings
Before falling to the earth, acid-causing emissions (sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide gases and the related acid particles) contribute to haze and smog and affect public health. Acid deposition is a problem in many parts of Canada since emissions that contribute to acid rain can travel thousands of kilometres from their source.
More than half of Canadian geology consists of vulnerable hard rock (i.e., granite) areas that offer poor natural defenses from the damaging effects of acid deposition. Many of the waters (streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes) and soils in Canada lack natural alkalinity, such as a lime base, and cannot neutralize acid naturally.
Provinces that are part of the Canadian Precambrian Shield, such as Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, are most affected. Lakes and soils found in areas of the Canadian Shield in northeastern Alberta, northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and parts of western British Columbia, are also sensitive to acid deposition.

Music, A Gateway to Nature
In a previous post earlier this year, we discussed interpretation through art. Discussing the “gift of beauty”, concluding that art can be a great way of indicting the preservation of nature by exposing audiences to nature around them. Through emotional and personal responses, art can be a great way of bringing passion linked with memory to the surface. In my post, we focussed on the great works of Bob Ross and his influence on me with his beautiful depictions of landscapes. Like paintings, music is another great artform of which can deeply entrench us in memory or space. In almost an instant, a cord, a singing voice, or a melody can streamline us into a memory or even a particular feeling.  Maybe even more so than a painting or other types of art.
Music is enjoyed by all - an important part of every culture and the weird connection of music is seen not only in our own species but in other animals alike (Gray et al, 2001). Animals from across the world, not only humans, respond to music, evoking strong responses… emotional, cultural, and cognitive (Gray et al, 2001). Animals like elephants and birds actually have been documented making their own music (Abraham, n.d) (Hughes, 2022). Animals like dogs, cats, cows, primates, rabbits, as well as several others have been shown to elicit specific responses to specific musical stimuli (Hughes, 2022). Music has been shown to influence animals across the board.
After going over this week’s readings, a particular quote from The Music of Nature and the Nature of Music spoke to me… Less a quote, more a question they pose. They ask the reader “Do musical sounds in nature reveal a profound bond between all living things?” (Gray et al, 2001). I believe this critical question to be true. Not only because musical notes can elicit a response in many animals, but because it is so good at bonding people. Whether part of the same culture or completely different ones, music has been proven to bring people together in times of sorrow. Whether it’s a popular song heard from across the world or a national anthem that brings a nation together, music has the ability to heal and bond.
As I sit here, at 12 am, searching my playlist to find music that brings me to a natural landscape… I find myself struggling. I have songs that remind me of people, and experiences, but why not any place? Of course, I remember songs like Mr. Brightside, bringing me right back to my first year on rez. Or 1901 by Phoenix transporting me to late-night drives in the summer. But no natural landscape. Racking my brain, and listening to about 2 hours of my playlist, I find it.
Like I mentioned in my first post, my dad was the person who gave me my “sense of place” in nature. Oftentimes, living in suburban Toronto, experiencing nature came hand in hand with long drives. That’s where I found many songs that brought me directly back to those car rides. Natural landscape wisping by my head. Songs like; When You Were Young by The Killers, Champagne Supernova by Oasis, She Will Be Loved by Maroon 5, Best of You by the Foo Fighters, and 1979 by The Smashing Pumpkins… All bring me right back to long car rides filled with beautiful views and warm feelings. Although there isn’t one particular song, I sit here listening to this playlist being almost completely transported. Rain hitting the window, leaning my head on the window sill, I can almost perfectly picture the rough beautiful landscape of Hamilton cliffsides. Or the flat, seemingly endless fields in Essex, Ontario. In what I can only explain as a fever dream, these memories come flooding in.

A photo from a cottage I visited in Kawartha Lakes, in 2017. Found this super late, but Juicy by Biggie reminds me of boat rides on the lake with my brother. Catching fish and good vibes.

Catching Up
When we got home from Africa, I had fallen way behind my goal to finish in the top 5 eBirders in Ontario for 2022 and I knew that I had a lot of work to do to catch up.
The next five weeks proved to be very busy as we travelled across Ontario chasing rarities. We went as far west as the Manitoba border, as far east as the Quebec border, north to Dryden (near Thunder Bay) and south to Windsor. In between birds, Jim and I were busy trying to get the house cleaned up and decorated for Christmas since we are hosting Christmas this year for our families.
Happily the birds cooperated and we were fortunate enough to find quite a few rarities on our travels. Here are a few of them:
Spotted Towhee
Tumblr media
Bullock’s Oriole
Tumblr media
Tropical Kingbird
Tumblr media
Purple Gallinule
Tumblr media
I was still hoping to pick up a few late migrants that I missed while we were away but the chances were getting slimmer as we moved further into December. Last weekend, we planned to go to Amherst Island and Wolfe Island with the slim hope of picking up a Northern Goshawk or Gyrfalcon flying by but, as often happens in the birding world, our plans were changed on the fly.
The winds were good for Van Wagner’s Beach in Hamilton Harbour so we stopped there on our way hoping against hope to find a late Jaeger or a Northern Gannet. Thankfully there was another birder there when we arrived. It is always nice to have an extra pair of eyes. It was freezing cold and the strong winds blowing in our faces made lake watching very unpleasant but birding in a big year is not always just about having fun. We were barely there an hour when Markus started yelling Pomarine Jaeger!! I was scoping out far into the lake and meanwhile, the jaeger was flying close into shore. Thank you Markus!
Tumblr media
Right after we saw the Jaegar, we received a message that a Dovekie had been seen and photographed in Ashbridges Bay Park in Toronto - right across the lake from where we were standing. Another decision: stay and look for more rarities or drive to Toronto and hope that the Dovekie would stay put. We decided to stick around a while but then we received another message that the Dovekie was being seen again so off we went. A little over an hour later, we arrived at Ashbridges only to hear that the bird had flown off towards Hamilton. Darn! This was a huge bird for Ontario listers and there were birders coming from far and wide so that they could see this cute little bird and also add it to their Ontario list. As we waited and scanned the shore, we had a nice time chatting to fellow birders and also photographing a beautiful Harlequin Duck.
Tumblr media
Fortunately, it wasn’t too long before someone shouted that they had found the Dovekie. Yay!! The tiny little penguin-type bird gave us great looks as it saw and dove very close to the shoreline. #335. So exciting! it was a really fun day as everyone was happy for the opportunity to see the Dovekie.
Tumblr media
As it wasn’t too late yet, we decided to continue with our original plan to go to Amherst Island. We just got past Belleville when we heard about a probable Slaty-backed Gull in Niagara Falls. Another tough decision! As this was a more likely bird to get and Amherst Island was just a fishing expedition, we turned around and went to Niagara. Traffic through Toronto slowed us down and it was too dark to look when we arrived, so we went back early in the morning and spent many hours trying to track it down. We were lucky to meet up with a fellow birder who is way more experienced that we are and she helped us scan up and down the Niagara River but with no luck this time. It was still a good day though as I learned a ton about gulls (thanks Jean!) so all was not lost!
It is now a week later - no new birds but we are once again going to try Amherst Island and Wolfe Island to see what we can find. Wish me luck!

The Greavette Streamliner - A speedboat from the past
Boat building has been a part of the history of Ontario, Canada for thousands of years. From the hand-crafted birch bark canoes of the indigenous people to modern factory-built speedboats, the construction of small boats for fishing, transportation and later water sports has been a widespread commercial activity in the province.
Wooden Boats
With the building of sawmills along the many rivers, European boat building methods began to be adopted. Canoes, rowboats, skiffs, and other small boats began to be made with wooden planks, often of cedar, which resists rotting better than most other types of wood.
Canoes made of wooden planks instead of bark, called "board canoes" first began to appear in the 1850s, although it is not known which craftsman was the first to combine the native boat designs with "modern" technology of sawn and planed boards. In 1882, the Gidley Boat Works began manufacturing wooden plank boats on the shores of Georgian Bay.
One early builder of board or "cedar strip" canoes was Tom Gordon of Lakefield, near Peterborough. Over time, a number of boat-building companies grew up in the Peterborough area; one was the Peterborough Canoe Company. A long-time builder of plank-built boats was John William Stone, who set up a business building rowboats at Rat Portage (Kenora) in 1897. By 1906 the Stone Boat Company was also building duck boats, sailing canoes, ice boats, rowing shells, and barges.
Beginning in the early 1900s, with the advent of gasoline engines, and the building of canals and locks to make rivers more navigable, many Ontario companies began producing wooden power boats. These were built from wide planks and shaped for speedy travel. In 1920, the Gidley Boat Works on Georgian Bay was taken over by Arthur Grew, who enlarged the company, renaming it Grew Manufacturing.
The Muskoka region was particularly known for its wooden speedboats.  Early builders of these boats were Johnson of Port Carling and Ditchburn Boats; other companies were Minett-Shields, Greavette and Duke. The boats were often used for pleasure trips, fishing, and water sports, as well as transportation on Ontario's many lakes, rivers and canals. Today these boats are restored by hobbyists and valued as collectors' items.
Join us for a tour of this stunning Greavette Streamliner, built in Canada.  The boats most notable characteristic is its curved sides.
