"wanting fiction to be relatable is selfish" my dude you can advocate for people getting outside of their own perspectives (a good thing) without implying that the human desire to be understood and empathized with is vapid and bourgeois

#like im of agreement with that one post that's like ''Resonant is a better word for what i want in a book than Relatable'' #but sometimes Relatable really is a fuckin great experience and i don't think its bad for people to seek that out #esp bc mainstream society leaves a lot of people in the dust in that regard #like if you're refusing to try stuff that doesn't seem ''relatable'' or saying stuff is objectively bad bc it wasn't personally relatable #then you should maybe expand your horizons and stop treating your own experiences as the hallmark of quality #but wanting to feel seen isnt a bad thing. #different stories can serve different purposes and someone enjoying the relatability of one can enjoy the different perspective of another #theyre not mutually exclusive like so many posts seem to portray them
