I think Alfred genuinely really liked Gilbert (sure it was only a teenage crush on an older emotionally/physically unavailable person but still v intense). Gilbert, I think, played along bc he thought it was funny and he loved, still loves, being adored/praised, so he entertained Alfred until some other thing that piqued his interest came along. Since Gilbert's attention span is minimal he quickly got bored of Alfred n didn’t see why it was necessary to let the teenager down easily (rejection builds character and also fuck them kids) so he just dipped, leaving Alfred devastated bc he had latched onto Gilbert like a DUCKLING. Pair this with Alfred’s mommy issues (England is not a good mom let’s just all agree on that) n alfred, subconsciously, just went: “fuck this. I’m not caring for another being ever AGAIN.”

Blah blah history, cue the late 60s and the Cold War. Alfred is spending a lot of time in West Berlin and therefore a lot of time around Ludwig. He has, to some extent, worked his way through all his issues (that r a result of the older Beilschmidt) but seeing Ludwig is just ripping up old wounds so he’s like: “your brother humiliated me so now I’m gonna humiliate you for some satisfactory revenge😈😈😈and also maybe I’m a little bit jealous of ur healthy brotherly relationship (but I won’t admit that, not even to myself)” And so Alfred starts embarrassing the fuck out of Ludwig whenever he can (drops hints about ludwig's bdsm kink at meetings, puts laxatives in his coffee, hides playboy mags n liquor bottles in his desk drawer right before an inspection, etc etc) n rubs the failure of Ludwig’s romantic relationship with Feliciano in Ludwig’s face bc that's one thing he's v sensitive about. But after some time he’s like: “haha wow, being raised by Gilbert you sure managed to pick up exactly the traits that i adored about him. Wow, have ur voice always sounded so smooth? and did ur eyes change colour in the last weeks because now it feels like I’m staring across at the Atlantic in them what the f-“ n he actually catches some genuine feelings for Ludwig. None that he will be able to express bc he’s slightly homophobic n also bc he’s taught himself to think of affection as cringe bc that way he won’t get attached to things that will reject him and in the process humiliate him.
