Louis Vuitton Exhibit

Last week we went to the Louis Vuitton exhibit that was at the old Barney's location. The exhibition was titled, "200 TRUNKS, 200 VISIONARIES: THE EXHIBITION". To summarize, the main point of the exhibit was that 200 artists/designers, etc, interpreted the Louis Vuitton trunk in their own way. After entering, you walk through many rooms, many of which are themed, that showcase these trunks.

Overall I thought it was a very unique experience. I found it to be quite an innovative way to market and bolster the Louis Vuitton brand while also lifting the other artists up. It felt like it was a mix between a brand event and a museum, which given the context is no surprise. I'm curious if more luxury brands will do things like this in the future. In a way, it was like they scaled the idea of a collaboration. I'm sure that the after party for the opening of this event was wild.

I'm not sure what my favorite trunk from the show was. I'd maybe say the floating one, this water one, or even the balloon one. The floating one (which I forgot to take a picture of...) was really a mystery to me. I couldn't understand how it was floating, and when I asked a worker even they said they weren't allowed to know.

Here's the balloon trunk. It was made with epoxy coated balloons, which I thought was very smart. I like that they changed a soft and impermanent material into a permanent trunk.

Finally, at the end of the exhibit they had a makerspace for people to create their own trunks. I thought that this was a great edition to the exhibit because it gives people the opportunity to express any inspiration they felt from seeing the other trunks. My trunk is pictured above, I didn't have a plan or any direct inspiration, but I felt the urge to make a messed up box. Destruction and repositioning is something I play a lot with in my own creative practice. I really enjoyed making this, and I hope they eventually hit my line to make it for real.
