Digital Badges for Season 2019
Digital badges are ubiquitous these days and frequently unlocked for displaying achievements in video games, course certifications etc. The Meccademy held an emergency meeting last week, after being thoroughly criticized for not being in tune with the digital times as far as the concert ticket sales are concerned. Without solving the concert e-ticket sales issue, the Academy committee decided to crashland into the digital age by launching the digital badge system for artists! The Meccademy Vidwat badge will be issued at various levels, and can be used by artists in LinkedIn and personal websites. Artists will also be able to use these digitally signed badges while seeking concert opportunities in India and abroad. The badges come in three levels - Sumaar, Beshumaar and Extreme. The names are chosen in accordance with the state’s three language policy.
The Meccademy commitee unanimously agreed that graha bhedam will be the sole criterion used for assigning the Vidwat badge levels. It may be noted here that graha bhedam or tonic shifts have been used, sparingly, by some vidwans and vidushis of yesteryears.
The guidelines issued to artists are as follows:
1. If no graha bhedam is done during a concert, absolutely no Vidwat badge will be unlocked. Complex pallavis or alapanas of rare ragas alone will not confer eligibilty for a Vidwat badge.
2. The Sumaar Vidwat badge will be issued for artists who display convincing graha bhedam for well-known and lec-demmed graha bhedams rendered in akAra. The infamous five - mohanam, hindolam, madhyamAvati, shuddha sAveri and shuddha dhanyAsi - and Abhogi/valaji are examples in this category. An artist must convincingly demonstrate in akAra during an alapana that they intend to do a graha bhedam by modeling the akAra on a well known kRti in the derived rAga on display. Otherwise the attempt will be considered as a failure to meet the basic graha bhedam standard.
3. The Beshumaar Vidwat badge will require an artist to perform interesting partial graha bhedams in akAra and kalpanA svara (solfa) passages. Solfa passages in the base and tonic-shifted rAgas will be considered as proof of artists' intent to display a graha bhedam. A minimum of three such displays  per concert, and three or more such concerts in a season, would unlock this badge. Some musical stores are already experiencing stockouts of harmoniums and keyboards, these having been purchased by artists and their senior shishyas upon realisation that playing plain notes makes it easier to achieve these partial graha bhedams during their practice sessions.
4. The Extreme Vidwat badge is the toughest one to obtain. This requires singing solfa passages in graha bhedam with rapid shifts (less than 3 seconds) between the base and derived rAgas. In addition, seamless enunciation and merging of the shadjas from the base and derived ragas is a must, with  recognition demonstrable in the form of audience applause. The Meccademy expects that 15-20% of the time for manodharma will be spent in such feats.
As Season 2019 gathers steam in Chennai, artists from sub-junior to the super-senior slots are being spotted in efforts to unlock these badges. When asked whether a Sangeeta Kolainidhi automatically qualifies for a lifetime Extreme badge, the Meccademy responded in the negative. The committee clarified that the levels need to be achieved during each season, and are valid only for the following year, much like airline and hotel point status. The Meccademy thinks that the expiration policy will drive continuous musical quality for the audiences world wide.
There are rumours of other sabhas coming up with their own levels and criteria for the equivalent of Meccademy Vidwat badges and associated perks.

Madhyamavati
Clears paralysis, giddiness, pain in legs/hands, etc. and nervous complaints
While words have their intellectual appeal, instrumental music can sometimes create an openness that language cannot. Among the many instrumental pieces Sounds of Isha has created to manifest different ambiences, Madhyamavathi is one of the more beautiful ones. The name reflects the raga on which the song is based.
We have also had the fortune of some part-time volunteers, who have contributed to our music. We could use this opportunity to say how Sounds of Isha is not just some small group of people in the ashram but consists of so many meditators all over India and the world, all contributing to the music and connected with the common bond of Sadhguru's Grace.
The flute melody for this piece was composed by one of our meditators. He wanted to offer it to sadhguru and as we worked with it to create a song, we had the fortune of roping in a few more contributors from amongst our volunteers. The result is what you hear.
We had no particular plan as to what ambience to manifest through this song. However, from our experience, we find that it can be soulful, meditative or relaxing–soothing and settling.

Raga Madhyamavati - Melody The swaras of this raga constitute a consonant set and this makes the melody very pleasant to the ear. It is also considered an auspicious raga and concerts seldom end without including a mangalam or a shloka in this raga. Great Tamil composer IlAYARAJA as composed many songs under this Raga.
