Instagram expands AI-powered age verification program to India and Brazil

Instagram, facing scrutiny from safety advocates, started testing a program in the U.S. earlier this year to verify users’ age claiming to be 18 or older. It uses techniques including authentication via running video selfies through an artificial intelligence system. The Meta-owned service is now ready to roll out this program to two key overseas markets: India and Brazil.

These countries together have about 400 million monthly active users on Instagram, according to market intelligence platform Sensor Tower, data of which an industry executive shared with TechCrunch. The social network said in an updated blog post that it plans to roll out this age verification program to the UK and EU before the end of the year.

Users can verify their age by providing an ID. Instagram has a list of documents it accepts for verification.

The program allows users to upload a video of themselves, which Instagram runs through an AI system to determine whether they are indeed aged 18 or older. For this option, Instagram has partnered with the UK-based identity startup Yoti. Once users complete taking a video selfie by following the on-screen instructions, Meta shares that with Yoti for verification through its specially trained AI. Both companies say they delete the data afterward.

Many social media companies use Yoti’s age estimation tech for verification as many users might not have a valid ID that is accepted by Instagram.

The social giant also said it is removing Social Vouching as an option to verify age. Social Vouching, one of the experimental ways Instagram verified the age as part of the new program, allowed a user to request their mutual followers, who are aged 18 or above, to vouch for the age. While it didn’t expand on the reason, it is likely that some users were gaming the system by asking their mutual followers aged 18 or above to lie for them.

The rollout comes at a time when safety advocates are lambasting Instagram for letting kids under 13 use the platform and not doing enough to stop teens from potentially seeing harmful content. On its part, last year Instagram made it mandatory for everyone to enter their birthdates, but it’s hard to rely only on that factor as users can easily provide false information. Notably, Twitter is rolling out a feature that asks users to enter their birthdates to see sensitive content.

Instagram says it uses age data to restrict certain experiences for teens: it makes accounts of users under 16 private by default, blocks DMs from unknown adults and stops advertisers to serve targeted ads based on teens’ interests and activities.

Lawmakers across the world are also looking at introducing rules that force platforms to have effective age checks in place. The UK’s Online Safety Bill and the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act look to restrict content that users aged under 18 can access. Their scrutiny was partially prompted after a whistleblower testified last year to reveal that Facebook had prioritized profit over the well-being of users, especially teens.

The Day I Became a Mother

It’s been a while since I last post anything here, typing feels awkward as well. But this has always been a thing that I wanted to do since the day I’ve given birth, to document and blog about my pregnancy and my birth journey, so in 4-5 years to come when my memories fade, I can always come back to reminisce every detail that I keep here, like a memory capsule.

The Day I Found Out I Was Pregnant.

You know, when people say that when you have a strong intuition about something, trust your gut feeling, because it’s often true. Mirin and I have always talked about having kids, me wanting a baby so much within months after we got married, however, Mirin having second thoughts about it. We were both married for less than a year, sleeping on a toto without a mattress or a bed, living in the deep slum of Wangsa Maju area where the rats are larger than the cats. Hahaha. Naturally, given our circumstances, he’d want to take things slow.

Fast forward to a couple of months, we went out for some steaks and karaoke on a weekend night. I told mirin to stop by Watsons, for me to buy a pregnancy test kit. Mirin didn’t question much, because occasionally I would randomly buy one, just for fun. But this time, I didnt just get one. I ended up buying three. Why? Because somehow, I had a strong feeling this time. I just felt... weird. It was a feeling that I can’t put it into words.

We came home at midnight, I went to the bathroom too “pee on the stick”. Then I saw the first line... a few seconds later comes the second one. Oh my god. Okay. I knew Mirin was standing outside the toilet door, waiting. Eventually, I had to break the news to him. When I showed to Mirin, we both ended up hugging and crying. Was I happy? Was I in shock? Was I sad? Yes, a little bit of everything. Its funny that all you’ve wanted was a baby, then when it actually happens, suddenly you’re freaked out. Happy that its a blessing. Sad that it hits you without a warning.

Pregnant!

When the morning sickness finally kicked in, I knew we couldn’t live in the current house. Its not the best place to raise a child. And the next-door neighbor was having major renovation that was super loud and noisy. After sleepless nights and searching for a new place, we eventually moved out. Bought our first bed, bought our first dining table, bought our first gas stove. A many of firsts. Soon we finally bought a baby cot from Ikea. We bought it too early. Although it was too early to put it up, but Mirin assembled it anyways. I could tell that he was excited. It was such a fun and exciting moment, for the both of us.

But those were the fun part. Like most pregnancies, the not so fun part about being pregnant was me being diagnosed with Pregnancy Hypertension during my 36th week of pregnancy. My blood pressure spiked up to 140/100 on two consecutive readings, and the next thing I know, that I’m sitting in an ambulance, on my way to Hospital Kuala Lumpur’s emergency building.

I spent 3 nights in their maternity wards, finally discharged after the doctor told me that I was clear to go. While I was in the hospital, it pains me to see new mothers struggling during the COVID19 pandemic. Throughout your stay, no visitations were allowed from anyone including your husband. If your baby cries or if you’re in pain, you’d have figure it out yourself. I remember praying to god while crying that I do not want to be induced there. The ward was stuffy and hot. There were too many people crammed in a room. It was hell.

The Day That I Give Birth

One week after my discharge, we both went for my monthly checkup with my OBGYN at Pantai. Again, my doctor advised me to be induced tomorrow, since my blood pressure spiked again, and I was almost full term (38 weeks) so it was okay to go. She told me that “It’s best to get the baby out or else you boleh kena sawan” OMG Okay okay. So we packed our bags, ate sushi for dinner, slept soundly for the very last time, and headed to the hospital again at 9 am the next morning.

Appointment card. Booked and paid for the accommodations prior to checking in

I was told to change into my labor robe (I’m not too sure what it’s called), and waited. When my doctor finally arrived, she then began to insert some sort of a plastic strip deeeeeep into my cervix. Ouch, that hurts. Okay, so that’s how induction works eh? Then I was given antibiotics into my IV drip too, since I was GBS (Group-B Strep) Positive as well.

After an hour, I felt the contraction. Initially it was uncomfortable, then it hurts like hell. The contractions felt like period pain but like a million times worse. Occasionally, Doctor Haslinda would come and check on my “bukaan”. Hours passed. 1cm... 2cm... 3cm.... when I finally said:

“Omg sakit sangat dah tak tahan, I want an epidural!“

Ok no, that was a lie. I initially didn’t want to take an epidural. I wanted to try and bear with the pain, but Mirin convinced me to take it, so after tossing and turning like a dying fish I finally said okay.

The anesthesiologist came after what felt like an eternity, and asked me to sign a consent form. I’m not really sure what was written in that. Siapa je ada masa nak baca terms and conditions panjang panjang bila tengah contractions???

He told me to sit on the edge of the bed, while hugging a pillow. I remembered him injecting some numbing spray, then I felt the BIG NEEDLE poking through my spine. Then.. that was it. It was so fast. The entire process took only 5 mins. Was it painful as I thought it would be? No. Was it still scary tho? Yep hahaha.

Soon after, Dr Haslinda pecahkan air ketuban when I was 4cm dilated. It didnt hurt because I was on epidural, but I felt so much warm liquid flowing out non-stop. So bizarre.

Once you’re on epidural, you’re basically bed-ridden. No bathroom trips anymore, my legs feel like jelly. Sometimes the nurse will come to empty my bladder with a catheter. When the epidural kicked in, I could finally sleep. I slept like a baby. I slept for hours. Painless. No more feeling like a dying fish. And so I thought.............

3am. I woke up with INTENSE CONTRACTION PAIN. Why is it so painful? I thought I’m on epidural? I called the nurse straight away. Turned out the epidural drug ran out. It was sooo stressful because the nurse that was on duty that night didn’t know how to topap balik the epidural drug into the machine. She called her colleague, then the colleague also tak tahu. Then both of them spent like forever to troubleshoot how to use the machine, sampai lastly kena call doctor tanya. YA ALLAH, rasa macam nak maki je.

7am the next day. Bukaan baru 7-8cm. Doctor decided to use another form of induction to speed up the process. It’s called pitocin, and injected through my IV drip. Within MINUTES, I could feel very intense and painful contractions, that the epidural can’t even help. So throughout the remaining 7cm to 10cm, I felt every inch of real labor pain. I clenched Mirin’s hand. So tightly that I think it got bruised. A minute felt like an hour, and an hour felt like years. It was soo bad that my memory was so fuzzy.

Finally, it was 10cm. Time to go. They put both of my legs up, macam gambar bawah ni haha:

There were two nurses, one small cute Malay nurse, one pregnant Indian nurse, and my OBGYN, Dr Haslinda. I love them all, they were so supportive and nice to me throughout my labor process. My doctor taught me how to push correctly:

“Take a deeeeeeep breath then tahan, clench your fists, chin down and teran macam nak berak sekuat-kuat hati“

I was so determined to get the baby out. I just wanted the contraction pain to end. I did everything they told me to do. I hold on to Mirin’s hand, and PUSHHHHHHHEDDDDDD! I could hear Mirin saying “You’re doing great sayang!” After several pushes, and some sips of water breaks, the baby’s head is almost out. The head was the hardest to push. Besar! I literally felt like my down there was stretching to its limit. Once the head is out, I did another small push, and the rest of the baby’s body macam keluar instantly macam super slimy like that haha.

Finally the baby is out! 8.26AM! The contractions stopped immediately. I instantly feel like I wasn’t pregnant anymore. The doctor then injected something on my thigh, then my uri just popped right out haha. My body felt so tired, but so so light. Lega, yay no longer pregnant haha. I ended up having second degree perineal tear without an episiotomy, and was stitched. I felt the benang, ngilu. I felt the needle pierced through my muscles too. But it didnt hurt so it wasn’t too bad.

The baby gets cleaned up. Then soon all of the nurses left the labor room, it was just me, Mirin and our baby. Mirin picked her up, and azankan. Mirin started crying, I cried too. It was magical :’)

We did skin to skin and tried breastfeeding for the first time. As I look at her, hair was so thick. Her cute little fingers. Her beautiful face. She’s perfect.

I slept for 5 hours straight after the labor

Thinking back, I have no idea how I managed to muster such courage to go through all these. Mirin even told me that during the active labor stage, when I was pushing, at one point I pushed so hard that my entire face turned blue. Talk about adrenaline.

Do I want to have another baby? Well, lets keep a rain check on that question for another few more years to come xD

Being a woman in this modern era

It is a really big responsibility womanhood has to bear today.

Being correlated to the domestic area; We have to be able to wake up early, clean the house, cook some meals (main course or cake and other fancy beverages), wash the dishes, feed the cats / dogs, clean their shit, make a bed, do the laundry, ironing the shirts, survive during monthly periods and its PMS, clean the toilet, do the groceries, watering the plants and some other tasks. (You’ll be considered less woman if not able to do so).

At the same time, some women are handling big responsibilities at their jobs, whether at the office or working from home. Name it, handling the clients, big projects, organizing events, meetings, workshops, field works, all demanding. Working both substantially and technically.

Being a mother? It is even more difficult. Being pregnant, giving birth. Preparing meals or pumping the milks, play with them, clean their poops, shower them, putting some clothes, calm them down when they’re having tantrums, buy them toys, driving them to school and pick them up later, help them with the homeworks, be patient and sleepless all the time. via Today Bharat nbsp; A few days ago, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu expressed concern over the issue of child pornography ndash; child sexual abuse material (CSAM) ndash; and said that he hopes that the 40 recommendations made by an ad-hoc committee to tackle CSAM are discussed in the Parliament. The committee was set up by the Rajya Sabha, headed by member Jairam Ramesh, and submitted a report on the matter on January 25 to Naidu, who is also the Rajya Sabha Chairman. It deals with two main issues: children's access to pornographic material on social media, and circulation of CSAM on social media. It has suggestions on several fronts ndash; amendments to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Information Technology (IT) Act, recommendations for intermediaries (social media companies like Facebook) as well as Internet Service Providers (ISPs, like Airtel, Jio etc.), as well as educational and state-level measures. Over the last few years, there has been increasing scrutiny on CSAM on WhatsApp, Facebook, the dark web, and other online platforms. With the government seeking to deal with CSAM, TNM looked at the ad-hoc committeersquo;s recommendations, what experts have to say about some of its pertinent points, and the steps that India should be doing to tackle the issue. Adding cyber-grooming to POCSO A significant recommendation is for the definition of cyber-grooming to be added to the POCSO Act. This will allow grooming i.e., establishing, building a relationship with a child either in person or online so as to facilitate either online or offline sexual contact with the child, to specifically be recognised as a crime in India. Vidya Reddy of Tulir, a Chennai-based organisation working to prevent child sexual abuse, points out, however, that under section 67B (c) of the IT Act, grooming is already criminalised. Exemption for sexting ndash; a double-edged sword? Another recommendation is to include a provision to safeguard minors engaged in sexting and exchanging explicit selfies from being penalised under the POCSO Act. Experts for long have long been pointing out that POCSO does not take into account teen sexuality ndash; teenagers engage in sexual acts and behaviour, often without the knowledge that it can be deemed criminal. NCRB data suggests that may be true The report notes that POCSO should be amended to say that minors cannot be prosecuted for CSAM if the child takes or stores or exchanges with another minor "indecent images" of oneself; the images donrsquo;t show an act that is a serious criminal offence; and if no person in the image is more than two years younger than the individual. However, all the committee members did not agree to this ndash; some said that there shouldnrsquo;t be such an exception at all, and others felt that the exception should only be for those between 16 to 19 years of age. Vidya supports the exception for sexting under POCSO for those below 18. However, she says the cut-off should not extend to 19-year-olds, and should remain congruent with the definition of a child as per POCSO and section 67B of the IT Act ndash; under 18 years. Otherwise, it will cause a lot of confusion for implementing agencies. Nitish Chandan, a cyber-security specialist who has conducted multiple investigations into CSAM on WhatsApp and Telegram, among other applications, also favours the exception. However, he cautions that it is a double-edged sword. ldquo;For instance, what about a couple where the individuals are 15 and 18 respectively? The two-year gap condition could prove to be arbitrary in some cases. Similarly, you could also be groomed and coerced into sharing your explicit photos by a peer of the same age,rdquo; Nitish says. ldquo;There is also the issue of revenge porn. We donrsquo;t know what unintended consequences legalising exchange of such material may result in.rdquo; Companies unlikely to break end-to-end encryption There is a recommendation to modify the IT (Intermediary Guidelines) Rules 2011 to have a provision to break the end-to-end encryption on platforms to trace the originator or sender of a message if CSAM is being shared. However, end-to-end encryption is a big push for companies like WhatsApp, especially with growing concerns over privacy and surveillance. Experts are not sure if a recommendation like this will materialise. Even in the unlikely event that it does, Siddharth Pillai of Aarambh, an online portal which works on online safety and combats CSAM online, points out that there are always other apps and platforms that people can migrate to, which do have encryption. ldquo;By regulating some platforms, you cannot solve the problem of CSAM circulation altogether,rdquo; he says. Privacy vs child safety? It is not as though child safety experts do not understand the concerns about privacy. However, it is the trade-off that picks privacy over child safety that they are opposing. A coalition of child protection organisations and experts from across the world recently wrote to Facebook about their reservations against the companyrsquo;s proposal of introducing end-to-end encryption on all its messaging platforms ndash; which would then include Messenger also. The over 100 signatories globally include Indian organisations against child sexual abuse, Tulir and Arpan, as well. Last year, Facebook said that it removed 11.6 million images of child abuse from the platform. However, experts have said multiple times that the social media giant needs to do more, and that CSAM is circulated widely on the platform. John Carr, secretary of the UK-based Childrenrsquo;s Coalition on Internet Safety and a member of the Executive Board of the UK Council for Child Internet Safety, told TNM that a crucial way to limit the spread of CSAM is for social media companies to use technical tools to detect known illegal images, possibly even before they are seen by anyone other than the person who has posted it. ldquo;And that person can be identified and reported to the police,rdquo; he says. A best-known tool of this kind, John points out, is PhotoDNA, which is developed by Microsoft. PhotoDNA is already used by Facebook, and its company WhatsApp too. Countries like Australia, the US and the UK use it too, though itrsquo;s not mandatory. A company can scan the information on its platform and cross-reference it to the PhotoDNA database containing previously reported child exploitative imagery. ldquo;However, the problem is none of these tools will work if you use encryption. Encryption blinds them (the companies). Why would any company intentionally want to deprive itself of the ability to detect this kind of illegal behaviour? There is no good answer to that question,rdquo; John says. In their letter to Facebook, of which John is also a signatory, the organisations have argued that concerns of privacy and data protection are valid, however, it is not a fair trade-off to put children in harmrsquo;s way ldquo;either as a result of commercial decisions or design choices.rdquo; Protection for those investigating CSAM, storing it for reporting The committee suggests that individuals downloading, storing or possessing CSAM for the purpose of mandatory reporting (under Section 19 of POCSO) should be given protection. This, Vidya cautions, is a huge loophole. She gives the example of Pete Townshend, the guitarist of English band Who, who was arrested in 2003 for using his credit card to access a website that had CSAM. He was let off because he argued he was doing lsquo;researchrsquo; for his autobiography ndash; he said that he was also a victim of child sexual abuse. But Nitish says that this could be a good move, considering it is not always possible to rely on big companies and law enforcement in a country as big as ours. However, there must be strict rules such as a time limit on storing CSAM if it is for the purpose of reporting, exceeding which a person can be held liable. ldquo;There should be Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for destroying such material as well,rdquo; he says. The committee also recommended that NGOs and activists who want to investigate sites to find abusers of children should be allowed to do so with the approval of a nodal agency. If they are found misusing this privilege, they will be liable to strict action. ldquo;This is one of the biggest lacunae in the report,rdquo; Vidya says. ldquo;We know that there are people who seek out jobs that specifically give them access to sexually abuse children and CSAM. This provision could give all those perpetrators the opportunity to masquerade in its guise.rdquo; If one looks at travelling child sexual offenders (TCSOs) ndash; people who travelled to countries and sought jobs as NGO workers solely for the purpose of abusing children ndash; like Richard Huckle, Ernest Macintosh, Paul Meekin to name a few, it is clear that the fears Vidya expresses have a lot of empirical evidence. On regulating intermediaries Among the many recommendations for intermediaries is also the suggestion that they be required to report CSAM as well as information relating to missing children on their platforms to Indian state and Central governments, and not just foreign authorities. They could also be required to make these reports to Indian authorities on a regular monthly or quarterly basis. Siddharth says that these moves could help hold big companies like Facebook accountable in India, in line with practices. Nitish agrees, adding, ldquo;Otherwise, many of these companies headquartered in the US just report to the American National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) while Indian authorities donrsquo;t have as much access.rdquo; Concerns about surveillance The committee in India has recommended that ISPs also monitor and take down CSAM ndash; this means that service providers like Airtel or Jio may have to proactively identify, remove and block CSAM content and websites, and can be held liable if they donrsquo;t. This is another move that experts think is impractical. ldquo;ISPs canrsquo;t really access to the content that is circulated on the internet and platforms. They could have access to your search history ndash; but that could practically amount to surveillance if there is no transparency. Further, it is very unlikely that they will be able to remove content,rdquo; Nitish says. That being said, he adds, ldquo;With proper guidelines from the Ministry of Home Affairs or National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), if ISPs are given a list of keywords and websites that they can look out for, then it may be beneficial.rdquo; Another recommendation is that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology mandate that a screen-monitoring app for devices should be developed and made freely available to ISPs, companies, schools and parents. However, Nitish argues that if an app that has access to your screen is made mandatory in India, it could be a ldquo;privacy disasterrdquo;. On awareness, education and a national portal Other recommendations in the report include steps to increase international cooperation, initiatives to bolster education and awareness and so on. However, instead of the Women and Child Development (WCD) Ministry as recommended in the report, this should, as per usual, fall under the aegis of Human Resource Development Ministry, Vidya says. Further, the report suggests that ldquo;NCPCR be designated as the nodal agency to deal with the issue of child pornography.rdquo; ldquo;The NCPCR is just an extension of the Central government right now. The issue of CSAM is a police matter; it should not be handled with soft gloves. It is a law matter, a Home Ministry matter, an HRD matter and should remain so,rdquo; Vidya asserts. India playing a lsquo;catch-up gamersquo; In the last paragraph, the report says that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should take the lead in building a global political alliance to combat CSAM on social media. However, there are existing alliances that India should be part of, Vidya says. ldquo;India is still playing a catch-up game. We are not part of any international initiatives that are already tackling CSAM for many years ndash; like WePROTECT Global Alliance, Virtual Global Taskforce and so on. Many countries have been doing great work in a collaborative manner for the past 8-9 years to curb CSAM,rdquo; she says. She also points out that while the report looks at childrenrsquo;s access to pornography on social media, it should not be conflated with CSAM in the same breath, as the report attempts to do. ldquo;We live in a sexualised world. Itrsquo;s not just the internet, children are accessing pornography elsewhere also. The recommendations say that those providing access to children to CSAM should be criminalised too. Look at the lsquo;item numbersrsquo; in films. They are also meant to titillate. Are we going to criminalise those who give access to children to these as well?rdquo; She adds that instead, children should be educated about the issues of the pornography industry. Siddharth, while appreciating the multi-stakeholder approach by the committee, adds that it says nothing about rehabilitating victims of CSAM.
