Hi! I'm writing a fic about the SEA nations and I'm struggling with writing a backstory for Phillipines since I know next to nothing about the irl nation's history. I tried googling it but all of the results were confusing and boring to read (or maybe I'm just dumb lol), so I wanna ask if you can summarize it for me and translate it into hetalia terms. Also what would you say is his biggest fear and what does he value the most in life? This is a lot to ask so thank you very much for answering :)
I got you! Reading about a country's entire history in a few minutes is <<information overload>>. All you have to remember is this: "300 years in a Convent, 50 years in Hollywood"
The Philippines has 3 major islands (Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao) with over 180+ ethnolinguistic groups. For thousands of years, these groups were either fighting or marrying each other, but they're also doing something useful such as trading with other kingdoms. Animism or Anito-ism (the belief on the spirits that reside in the environment) is the core religion, then Hinduism and Buddhism came along, and then Islam, and then Catholicism when Ferdinand Magellan wanted to prove that the world is round, but he slayed! A few decades later, Spain sent Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, and that's where 333 years of colonization began, and ended when Filipinos wanted reform and equal rights.
On the other side of the world is an emerging empire trying to manifest its destiny, USA 🦅🦅🦅. They fought Spain and got Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. USA had no idea how to govern a colony though and eventually the PH was elevated to a Commonwealth in preparation for its future independence. But WW2 happened and Japan invaded the PH to reach Indonesia (which had tons of oil 👀). Decades after the end of WW2, the Philippines was under the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos for over 20 years. The people initiated a bloodless revolution and the Philippines, finally, gained freedom.
Now, the Philippines (Piri, as we dearly call him)'s biggest fear would be <not belonging in a community>. MaPhilIndo (a proposed, nonpolitical confederation between Malaysia, Philippines, and Indonesia) was spearheaded by a former Filipino president. When it did fail, the PH became part of the 5 countries that formed ASEAN. Piri would have been lonely in his early years, having no *significant* land border with another country (there's one with Indonesia but it's a very tiny island). To go to neighboring Asian countries or to Latin America, he had to sail. Growing up, Piri would be present in almost every fiesta and festival to feel a sense of belongingness.
This brings me to what Piri values the most, ✨️ family ✨️. It's a double-edged sword as Filipino families can either support you or bring you down or both. As for Piri, with the absence of a family in a mortal human sense, the friendships he built fill the hole in his heart that wants to be part of a family. With ASEAN, together we rice (pun intended).
