Ahoy gamers
I’m borrowing a ps3 from a friend and I’m returning it two weeks in that time I’ve decided to challenge myself to beat every MGS game In the MGS legacy collection which contains
Metal gear solid 2: sons of Liberty
Megara gear solid 3: snake eater
Metal gear solid : Peace Walker
Metal gear sold 4: guns of the patriots
I wanted to do this because one I haven’t actually played any mgs games outside of the twin snakes and I want to see what happens and 2 I need to fill free time until the 25th now the main thing I want to experience is the story these games provide and while we the gameplay is very important to these series I’m in a strict time limit here so there are the following caviates/ parameters under the read more
I will be playing these games on very easy difficulty. I know that i might be depriving myself of the challenge and reward of the gameplay but I had to make concessions for time also i was not strictly speaking “good” at the only metal gear I played so I might still be challenged
No game skips or crazy speed run tricks are allowed for the challenge. I want to get as complete a picture of each game as time allows so I won’t be doing things like setting the clock ahead for the sniper fight in MGS3 I feel like I’ve already made concessions with the difficulty and stuff like that feels a bit like cheating to me in this context
I will very likely miss certain codec calls and story beats within them. My current setup is a ps3 plugged into a dell monitor with no speakers I don’t want to have no sound at all during this experience so I’ve set up a queue of like mgs2 the movie all cutscenes videos on my phone that I can sync up and area soundtracks but because of this setup I’m at the whims of what these compilations include and I want to have sound when people talk in these games I’ll try to get everything I can but I’ll miss something’s but please feel free to mention things I might’ve missed as long as they’re not spoilers to the time point I am at in the game
Im going to be writing up little blog posts at the end of each day if the challenge containing thoughts/ funny/ moments occurrences I find notable I will be tagging these with #metalgearmania and game appropriate spoiler tags the first of these which will be a combo of day one and two will go up later tonight

Metal Gear Mania Day:5
At the time of writing I’m at the save screen after getting hit with 9 meaty electric god wind fists from a large Russian man I want try being less rambler for this one so I’m going to bullet out my talking points below the cut THESE WILL CONTAING SPOILERS FOR MGS 3 A GAME YOU SHOULD BE PLAYING IF YOU CAN
BOSS FIGHTS - I’ve faced three bosses today. The Fear, The End and The Fury all members of the cobra unit and all pretty fun I appreciate how open ended these boss fights are even between using Lethal vs non Lethal tactics each side has a plethora of tactics that you can use for example The End is set up so you can do a sniper wolf style snipers duel theres a room with an SVD and ammo in the arena and everything however I wanted his camo and didnt have a non lethal sniper so I had to go at it with a tranq pistol i feel like if I did this in some other games I’d be up a creek but here not only was I able to do it I had several ways of going about it you can terrace some animals use thermal goggles if you have them and even sneak up behind him which i was able to do once, The Fear is similar but I don’t have much to say as i cheesed him with fake death pill and stun grenade which worked shockingly well, The Fury is a lot less physically open than these taking place in a Vulcan raven style maze but the big storm drain looked cool and offered no less tactical depth, my one complaint thats very minor is that KOing The End doesn’t get you his camo just his myosin which is still a good pick up as its a non lethal sniper. I learned that to get his camo you actually have to hold him up three times which is it fine I’m just kinda bummed cause it turns out its a good ass camo. a lot of the stuff you get especially boss items seems to set you up for another playthrough which is kind of a thing throughout the game encouraging multiple play-throughs which is something I would be open to if I weren’t on a time crunch
THE BOSS- I noticed while comrade Kazuya was pushing my shit in boss got visibly upset by this on top of that she keeps insisting Colonel Mishima leave snake to her. It’s obvious she still cares for him in someway and she doesn’t seem like the kind of person who just defect to be on the other side so I dont think its just a lingering thing she has to get over on the side she beat my ass with powerful techniques twice already so I think theres something more its meta gear after all theres gotta be some crossed wires the only thing is that where I’m at now there seem to only be two major players 2.5 at best plus all this stuff with the “philosophers legacy” they bring up the philosopher’s super casually like I’m supposed to know them maybe it’s something from the MSX games but The Boss intrigues me I dont think she just out and out switched sides and I don’t really want to kill her we’ll see I guess

Metal gear mania days 1&2
Game: MGS2
Got started yesterday and cleared the tanker and got past the basic setup of the main game. I’ve played Twin snakes a lot back in the day so I was vvaery familiar with the controls and was able to slide back into that control scheme very easily in MGS2 save for a little trouble converting muscle memory from a game cube controller to a ps3 controller. If you’ve played either you know how good this scheme feels, responsive movement leaning around corners and first person aiming combined with the lovely shoulder button menus makes this a great experience from a gameplay standpoint I’d imagine that at launch the tanker segment was a very engaging playground for learning and testing the new controls while it my case and Im sure others who started with the twin snakes it worked as something of a check list like a pre flight check to makes everything was up and running. The tanker also does very well at setting up plot hooks and intrigue some of which went very different directions than I thought they would as always it makes me happy to hear Snake and Otacon.
(Spoilers below the cut)
I was also happily surprised to hear cam Clarke back at it as liquid snake in the form of an arm ocelot picks up being the funniest guy ever right where he left off after the post credits of twin snakes immediately showing up acting goofy doing gun tricks and turning on his allies before succumbing to the horrible fate of being British even if just for a moment. I don’t have much to say on the shift to Raiden as it was something i knew would happen, hard to keep stuff like that under wraps these days. Something I really did appreciate was just how hard this game attempts to gaslight you into thinking everything’s hunkey dory from raidens initial codename being Snake or Campbell, who I’ll talk more about in a bit repeating the lines about the Soloton radar from the first game, not much to say naritively about the early game as most of the conversation where about using the action button is various wacky ways. The main thing that happened during the first day was mostly me trying to wrap my head around why people seemed to hat raiden so much when this game came out. This guy is hilarious and frankly pretty adorable. One of my favorite things about the first game is how it makes you the player and solid snake the character feel like this expendable grunt even while doing insane shit like rocket jumping to kill a helicopter, something I haven’t seen talked about a lot is just how much of the game is something of mystery story and you ALWAYS feel like your the last to know and that Carries over to this game. At this point my naritive thoughts are gonna blend days 1 and 2 together and I’m not gonna really section things out super hard between them, I think a strength of this game is how that sense of being left in dark carries over but is fundamentally different due to having played the last game. At the beginning of MGS there’s no real hint that this is going to be more complex than it presents itself to you. The vibe early on is one of a cool action game where you go in and do snakes solider man things maybe this is different if you played the OG metal gear but for me I was unaware and that feels intentional by the time you get to the DARPA chief you start unraveling these threads and dont really stop untill the end of the game. MGS2 starts you the player and Raiden at about the same point in terms of knowledge with one key difference. You the player KNOW what really happened on Shadow Moses and raiden does not you start the game knowing that something isn’t right and there are these crossing wires but even after all you did in MGS 1 you still dont know enough. I think having the two man booth really adds to this and Campbell repeating lines from the first game weaves that beautifully to give you the sense that something isn’t quite right before you even really start the story. Those lines put you in the headspace of MGS with this full support team but here at this point you really only have the colonel and Rosemary, who I really like i think her dynamic with Raiden is cute. On the other hand Campbell feels off. I love Paul riding hearing is voice makes me feel as though I’ve consumed a lovely warm stew in an otherwise frigid winter is that warmth that spreads through out your body. I do not feel that here at all. I know he kept secrets in MGS and was pretty shady at the end (though the specifics escape me and I was too spoiler scared to check a wiki) but this feels like a whole different level At the point I’m currently at so much of the initial details have been showned to be incomplete or flat out untrue not to mention aspects of the situation he doesn’t include. The combination of his insistence that you can’t trust pliskin ( who IS solid snake I’m not gonna bother with the bit here even though its really funny) and the at times very aggressive tone with which he interacts with raiden makes it really hard to tell if this is stuff he genuinely doesn’t know or if he knows way more than hell let in on. This is another thing i think works really well in conjunction with the first game.\
In that game Campbell was a solid grounding presence which was used by the game later when even he starts becoming unsure and untrustworthy just how much you don’t know and how little of a grasp is had by the cast on the reality of the situation at shadow Moses. In MGS2 you are armed with that knowledge but are still presented with Campbell as the grounded athoritiative figure this creates a sensation of unsteady ground to the player immediately while providing a lot more incentive to interact with and trust pliskin aside form the fact he’s obviously snake he feels like hes got more of the situation figured out and is much more willing to tell Raiden. Side note these feelings of uncertainty and distrust are defiantly also influenced and reinforced by the tanker incident but I find myself unable to articulate that to the degree I could with stuff from the first game.
The Game is also paced very well even if you’re playing it like a nutcase like I am as you go through more and more of things you were told about the mission prove to just be untrue beyond just its more complicated than we initially thought, like i said I’m not sure if Campbell is traight up lying to me or not but at the point I’m at now I’ve just learned about the patriots and its hard not to notice how much the plan of action Campbell insist upon lines up with what it seems they would want at this time I can’t be sure if cause he works for the military of hes just being fed just the same bad info we are or if theres more to it but I am intrigued
On a final note the antagonist situation is interesting. Dead Cell are, objectively, hilarious. I lost my mind when Fatman in particular roller bladed up with his bomb disposal gear and wine glass to talk about how epic his next YouTube prank was gonna be, Vamp just does increasingly more ridiculous things every time hes on screen, Fortune is cool as fuck and her theme fucking melts. After that it does get a bit confusing as which out of the three between ocelot the patriots and solidus i should focus on and I think that’s intentional. It does feel like being in a room with three people where on of which is going to kill you and the others but you don’t if its going to be all of them or just one and if so which one. It all adds up to give a sense that you can’t stay still or in one place too long you have to keep pace with something to stay alive but figuring out exactly what or who is anything but easy
In conclusion: four stars check it out.

Metal Gear mania Day: final
Misson: failed ❌
Unfortunately the hardware issue I encountered persisted freezing when I ever I tried to advance during the shadow Moses section and effectively making it impossible to progress and complete that game. I’m bummed like you wouldn’t believe especially with victory so close I don’t want to get into the mind set that the whole experience wasn’t worth anything cause I took a mega L at the end I had fun for most of this and was having fun up until it became apparent that progress would be impossible. But the main things I wanted to do were experience the story of these games and stretch my sucked with reguardada to writing on games and I definitely feel like I’ve accomplished the latter I feel like despite still having room to improve I’m way better than when I started. The main thing I came away with is just how great most of these games are I can’t stress it enough, if you can give these a try even if you’re not good at games I’m bad at pretty much all of these games and I had a great time but this brings it all to a close thank you to all who read for doing so and when/ if I get an opurtunity to finish mgs4 I will be posting about it

Metal gear mania day:13
Slow day today had a combo of I fell asleep in my chair while playing plus a section that was tricky as I had to listen for a sound cue with a monitor that does not have audio and finally towards the closing I experience a potentially fatal hardware issue depending on weather it is what I think it is basically I’m at the shadow Moses section which is blowing my mind by the way but as soon as I try to crawl through a vent or u set the truck my game freezes it seems to be an over heating issue and hopefully with a full night to cool down it’ll be up and running for tomorrow which is the final day I really hope the disc isn’t scratched so close to the end good news is at least for tomorrow the audio problem will be fixed as I’m borrowing a display with speakers yaaay yippie as far as In game stuff bro we are under attack Meryl’s play genuinely could not have gone worse and snake is just taking so many L’s if he survives the game I hope his next two months are the most chill time of anyone’s life my guy is getting put through it nice to see EVA and learn that pretty much everyone you interacted with as well as played in mgs 3 were straight up evil as well as mostly dead it gives me this grim fascination with the big boss games knowing that almost every character is dead or made the world so much worse cool stuff. Can’t say the same about the Europe level a really annoying tailing sequence that in all fairness is proabably not that bad in most circumstances and then a fine turret section an ok boss fight such is life a friend I Was talking to said that as the story gets better the gameplay takes a bit of a hit
And as of right now that tracks to conversation with Meryl at the beginning of the level was just so beautifully gutting and the same can be said of the sequence at the end also why’d they make the pooping bandit kinda hot.another thing fucks going on with Naomi? you come into my plane teach me and otacons adopted daughter to cook eggs and then immediately turn heel again. Anyway gotta get good and rested for the final stretch tomorrow

Metal gear mania day: 12
Some spoilers are below
Man this game is sad mgs2 ended on a rather hopeful note and it bums me out that in the seven years between those events and the ones of this game things have gotten worse and snake seems to have lost that sort of determined optimism that I really loved from mgs 2 it makes sense in character and is intentional because the game wants you to be sad and it works on top of all that he’s old now and I hate seeing old people sad/ in peril so it’s just a bummer game from a story point and the reveal that snake has basically 3 weeks left to live and his reaction was heart breaking he’s clearly trying not to confront it but the scene with Naomi forces him to. Moving in to the more fun side raidens back!!! Yay!!! I will say I knew he became a ninja because I was on YouTube in 2008 but seeing him do all this cool and goofy shit like hits way better now that I actually know what his deal is and what he’s been through love this guy he got fucked up though. I mentioned back when I was playing mgs 2 that camp did increasingly funnier shit every time he was on screen and that mother fucker didn’t miss a beat his first response after being shot in the head was to not only make sure he caught his Motorola razor but do so as over dramatically as possible and then switch to an even more dramatic pose to die for a bit and he steps it up even more in his fight with raiden.
Also I don’t buy the nano machines explanation for vamp not after fortune got told by ocelot (a guy who has worked with a man who can summon bees an old man who photosynthesis a psychic who can mind control people read minds and attack you with paintings of game developers and lady who could teleport) that there’s no magic or powers on earth only science and then proceeded to use her magic powers to deflect his missiles
Drebin is so cool I love his car his handkerchief and stupid pet monkey by the way if anyone wants to explain what the flashback when Naomi and snake are holding the monkey was about feel free also sunny is great and otacon is so dope I love to see him so confident and determined to right his and hisfamily’s and wrong also the way he says darpa when snake asks him how laughing octopus has octo camp was funny
Speaking of laughing octopus she’s a fun design and cool boss fight I actually really like all the B&B designs at least there armored designs and the frogs as well. Laughing octopus was a nice bossfught nothing ground breaking but still pretty clever feels like the decoy octopus fight we never got idk if I got the face camp system for the KO or just her face as one of the options but I like face camo the mask looks so cool that I kinda wanna always keep that on we’ll see anyway I gotta go do the Europe level see ya

Metal Gear Mania Day: 11
That new game feeeeling man MGS:4 is a lovely breath of fresh air after peacewalker’s frustrating crunch I re did the math and it turned out i had one more day than I thought so i probably didn’t need to go as hard on peacewalker but id honestly rather have 4 days with MGS:4 than an extra day with peacewalker. at time of writing I’ve just completed the first act and and mission briefing on the little plane and I really like this game i probably should’ve gotten farther but I forgot to save and had to go do stuff so I had to get up to the first frog fight twice essentially not that busted up about it. A lot of stuff seems to have happened between MGS:2 and now and I’m sure they’ll elaborate on it eventually and they tell you enough as of now to get it its mainly some how question that quite honestly would probably be wasted time to explain talking with a friend about it he said this was Kojima with his most clout and I’m inclined to agree its got a lot of his particular sense of humor ranging from the good end of actually making me think this monkey was about to talk when meeting drebin who rules to the very bad end namely this dude who refuses to stop shitting and farting and somehow still works for Meryl who it was nice to see. This game feels sad aside from the obvious of snake being old as shit it seems that emotionally he’s in a lot worse place than he was in MGS:2 and that pretty sad, last thing to touch on is the opening of the game where they show you a little nature doc of an octopus with some ticker stuff and my ass was enthralled with marine life as usual and didnt notice till towards the end that on all the maps and the ticker were horrible wars and atrocities so yeah the media cycle fuckin fooled my ass and distracted me from the horrors of war as a business full admission

Meta gear Mania Days:9&10
Covering after compleating peace walker so spoilers might occur under the cut
GAMEPLAY- this was a weird one it plays like a weird mush mash of phantom pain and snake eater but not as interesting as it entails. The depth of survival mechanics is unimpresive in relation to MGS3 which is fine but there are some strange holdover like the camo index and bones of the original camo system except instead of being able to swap at any moment its all pre mission since it seemed footstep noise was far more impactful on stealth than actual camo I basically never swapped out of the sneaking suit once I unlocked it. On the subject of missions the whole mission based structure was weird especially when the story is structured much more like a classic metal gear long ass mission the constant breaks actually really got on my nerves untill I remembered that it was originally a psp game and as such was meant to played in bursts on the subway during your commute to your job as a salaryman not as parted of a demented pseudo speed run of an entire franchise. What I experienced as frustrating and jarringly momentum breaking to be continued screen was in fact a gentle blessing to those dedicated office workers who would soon arrive at their stop. Interesting tidbit when you start the game you given three control schemes one of which is basically just monster hunter freedoms control scheme and is even referred to as such in the game I didnt use it although funnily enough i did end up using the old monster hunter claw in segments at the end. Another important thing to mention is that I fucking suck at this game and I think its fair to chalk a few of my annoyances at how the game played up to that fact. What I wont concede being a skill issue is that like half of the boss fights suck all three of the normal vehicles are not fun to battle and the chrysilais gave me an aneurysm. I don’t like to get mad at games and I’m proud to say I dont get mad at games very often, but the chrysalis just pissed me off. Looking back I don’t even know why, like when I think about it its not that bad like the normal vehicles are bad because they’re boring and samey but like chrysalis just hides and blasts you while shooting grabbers at you and also missiles. Maybe its just that I kept getting kind of locked up by the missiles or the small health pool or that I got unlocked and killed a lot just before I i switched back to ration from the sonar thing also i miss the trigger menus. The side ops were fine.
STORY- I don’t Have a ton to say other than its really good its very personal mostly focusing on big bosses grief but the dialog and performances where really strong David hayter goes off and does such a good job of sounding just so weary the gathering of freaks was fun and the “secret” ending was interesting but I was kinda done with the game at that point I do appreciate that strangelove’s whole motivation is being down so tremendous that she brings the boss back as an AI that was fun also I adored the motion comic style believe it was mostly shinkawa doing the art and it was amazing I love his kind of schratchy style that manages to be so utterly full of life Kaz is hilarious, and I hope Huey went to hell before he died
Moving foward- coming close to the end here I really had to beat peace walker today to have a hope of getting this whole challenge complete and grinding like that has kind of burned me out with regards to talking about it like there’s really so much to dig into especially with how Big Boss is jumpstarting the nightmare war economy that the series talks about and is about to focus a lot more on in the next game but I’ve got three hearty days for MGS4 and I’m very excited see you then

Metal Gear Mania Day:7
Spoilers for MGS3 below the cut
I liked The bullet style from day 5 so were gonna use that this
THE SORROW this was a very cool boss fight. in my instance it was terribly mechanically complex or strictly speaking engaging but i was glued to my seat and the screen for the whole thing I wasn’t aware that there’d be a boss fight like this when i decided to try not to kill anyone, to be honest i just wanted to look cool in front of girls, but when i put two and two together that he shows you and makes you fight everyone he kills I kinda wished id killed some people It’s such a cool idea, I was a little peeved that the cobra unit ghosts showed up because I busted my ass to get all the KOs but they did also all explode after that so fair enough. I do love that even though he has a health bar its empty cause hes a ghost and the framing of this boss fight as snake almost dying is cool and helped by the fact that if you call anyone on codec they give you their game over lines
OCELOT this fucking guy every scene in this game makes you realize that the guy we see in MGS 1&2 was the “normal” well adjusted version of this guy who doesn’t go around sniffing random people and keeps his raging desire for Big Boss somewhat in check him being the final encounter was a nice relax from the actual final boss and I like the scene where they fight in the plane
THE BOSS (FIGHT) this one fuckin hurt, It’s a beautifully designed fight, A final duel in field of white flowers nothing but but stealth and CQC I made this harder on myself by using the sneaking suit cause I wanted that contrast against The Boss’ suit but man If you pay attention Snake gets a little better in each cutscene against the boss and that comes to ahead with you having to counter her moves in the fight finally surpassing your mentor add on the timer which i thought would actually come into play cause a timer didnt pop up on screen when the fight started even when The Boss started counting downs herself i was a bit 50/50 but I did actually run out of time so I learned my lesson. You have to play such a mix of patient and aggressive to get through this one
THE EVA ESCORT SECTION Ive heard a lot of flack directed at the Emma section in the last game and honestly i thought this part was worse it wasn’t anything horrible just a bit slow there was a section at the begg=inning where soldiers kept poring out and she wouldn’t go from an attack state to follow state fast enough in the down time between the soldiers showing up so we kept getting detected and entering alert I was mostly annoyed cause she kept shooting people and I thought the game would count it against me like with snake in MGS2 other than that it was just strategic snack acquisition and on to the heart break.
THE ENDING AND THE BOSS while the ending of MGS2 melted my brain this one just made me sad its a much tighter and more personal narrative than the last game and I think thats a smart call if you do something like MGS2 again you’d have to escalate it which I think would be difficult to do so soon after and without getting too convoluted. Don’t get it wrong there’s still some crossing threads in this specifically with regards to EVA, The Boss , Ocelots allegiances EVA being a Chinese spy Ocelot being a triple agent reporting to krushev over gru and The US over even them and of course The Boss remaining loyal to the US despite Kowing the expanded mission out right required her death and disgrace. I dont have a ton i feel i can say about that without straight up beaming the game into your brain its just so fucking heart breaking man her talking about how the ceaseless churn of war turns soilders into these disposable pieces where their lives a relationships are ripped up by the whims of major leaders and bids for power money etc I have players a bit of peace walker at time of writing and the fact that snake didnt fucking get it and interpreted her dream not as a world with out conflict freeing them from the need to be this group beholdent and loyal to the whims of others over themselves or each other and can live in peace but instead as world simply not beholdent to any conflict while still perpetuating it while remaking loyal to themselves just guts me man
MOVING FOWARD i had a bit of trouble deciding to go onto peace walker or MGS4 I started peace walker but got so nervous that i made the wrong choice taht i actually asked a blog I follow who is way more knowledgeable about this kind of stuff than i am about how I should go (you should follow them by the way their @ is cerastes they make good posts and have very enjoyable streams sometimes) in short he told me that while that while I was not making a mistake as both of these games feed into eachother very well meaning it was ultimately a personal choice that personally he would play 4 first sating that its depiction of war as buisness would resonate with a peace walker play through. So I was going to do that then I waffled some more then I decided that MGS4 status as a conclusion to series at lest at the time would vibe better as the final gaem in the context of this deranged two marathon I’ve done. I’m mostly writing this bit so i dont come across as/ feel like an asshole for asking for advice and kind of disregarding it, and if you read this dreamer I really did appreciate the advice and would have played the order you recommended if I was playing this in a more casual way taking my time through them all etc, any way neurosis aside its on to peace walker yippee!!

Metal Gear Mania (belated) Day: 6
Had tabletop yesterday so I didn’t play much from where I’d continued to play after the day five post. Since the last post I’ve gone from groznyj grad to the second boss fight with Volgin I’m enjoying how much this feels like a metal gear version of a classic spy movie we went really long last night and got pretty rowdy so as of now I don’t have the necessary intact neurons to say anything cool or smart but I’m gonna beat 3 today and start peace Walker I don’t know if I’ll post all the thoughts after I beat it or the end of the day like always we’ll see
