Miguel Vidal was one of the first people I met when I decided to take my BBQ journey. I got out to @valentinastexmexbbq very early on a Friday morning and it was freezing outside. Nonetheless I got in a chair at the front of where I thought a line would start. When Miguel saw me he came right over and I told him what I was up to and he was very hospitable. He gave me a fresh made chorizo and egg taco made from scratch. I wasn't expecting this at a BBQ joint but I welcomed the gesture and we talked for a few moments about BBQ and about his origins and how he did things the way that his family had when he was growing up. It was a familiar story to me because I'd grown up similarly and understood. In a land of post oak smoked BBQ Miguel has chosen to smoke meats over mesquite. This is the style of the vaqueros and ranchers from south and west Texas and a flavor that had memories gushing from the deepest crevices in my brain. On top of all that, fresh tortillas were being rolled out as my order was being made. Freshness and familia = an amazing BBQ experience. Valentinas is a spot that anyone coming to Texas should go out and try simply because you're going to get the Vidal family's best. Most of us here already know that when you go there you're going to be treated like a member of the familia. It's the way things should be. Miguel has made sure of it. I was there 3 times in 2019 and had tacos, brisket, beef ribs, pork ribs and so much more. Every bite brought me back to my childhood and the feelings I got when I'd eat fajitas or barbacoa at my Grandma's house. When something does that to you it transcends the food and does something in your mind and spirit.
